Dr. Luke refuses to allow Kesha to perform at the Billboard Awards this Sunday

Here are some photos of Kesha at the Humane Society’s Rescue Gala a few weeks ago in LA. It’s good to see Kesha out and about these days, trying to reclaim her career and her life after everything that’s gone down legally and personally with Dr. Luke. The last time we checked in on Kesha’s legal situation, the federal judge had thrown out part of Kesha’s appeal, and Kesha was and is still legally and contractually tied to Dr. Luke and his label, Kemosabe Records. The judge seemed to believe that even if Kesha’s claims of physical and emotional abuse were true, Dr. Luke would still support Kesha’s music and give her free rein to record and perform, because capitalism. Let’s see how that’s working out, shall we? For several days, Kesha and her team were making a big deal about how she would be performing at the Billboard Awards on May 22 (this Sunday). She was going to perform a cover of Bob Dylan’s “It’s Ain’t Me, Babe.” She got written permission from Kemosabe Records, but then Dr. Luke rescinded the permission. So… yeah. FREE KESHA.

Sad news for Kesha and her fans. The “TiK ToK” singer has been barred from taking the stage at the Billboard Music Awards on Sunday, May 22. Dick Clark Productions, which oversees the annual awards show, released a statement on Tuesday, May 17, revealing that the 29-year-old’s scheduled performance has been canceled by her producer, Dr. Luke, and her label Kemosabe Records. The singer has been in a contentious legal battle with Dr. Luke, 42, over allegations that he sexually abused her.

“Kesha accepted an invitation to perform on the show and she received written approval from Dr. Luke’s record label, Kemosabe Records,” Dick Clark Productions said in a statement. “Kemosabe subsequently rescinded its approval following a media report on Wednesday May 11 regarding Kesha’s appearance on the BBMAs. Unfortunately, Kesha and Kemosabe have since been unable to come to an agreement for Kesha to perform on the show. Dick Clark Productions has a long standing relationship with Kesha. We hope that the parties can come to an arrangement such that we can continue that long standing relationship with a performance by Kesha on the Billboard Music Awards stage on May 22nd.”

Not long after, Kesha took to Instagram to respond to the news that her BBMAs set has been canceled.

“I was very excited to perform a tribute to Bob Dylan by singing a cover of ‘It ain’t me, babe’ at the Billboard awards this year. I’m very sad and sorry to say I won’t be allowed to do this,” she wrote. “I just wanted to make very clear that this performance was about me honoring one of my favorite songwriters of all time and has never had anything at all to do with Dr. Luke. I was never going to use a picture of him, speak of him or allude to my legal situation in any way. I simply wanted to sing a song I love to honor an artist I have always looked up to. thank u all for the continued support.”

According to TMZ, Dr. Luke put a halt to Kesha’s performance after catching wind that it was reportedly going to make a “statement” about her legal war with her former collaborator and Sony.

Remember how the judge who threw out Kesha’s case and her appeal thought it would be easy-peasy for Kesha to record and perform without having to break her contract with Dr. Luke? That for Dr. Luke, it was always going to be about profit and money and not exerting control over his (alleged) victim? How’s that working out? It’s mind-boggling that Dr. Luke has the authority and the audacity to shut down Kesha in this way, and to do it so publicly. For the love of God… FREE KESHA.

Adele broke Taylor Swift’s Vevo record: do you think Swifty is pissed?

I also think it’s interesting that Adele’s first music video in more than three years stars an African-American dude as her love interest/former love interest. Taylor has a well-documented blind spot when it comes to race, and it’s doubtful that she would even consider casting a minority actor/model as her fictional love interest. Taylor doesn’t even cast minority actors when she’s filming Out of Africa-themed music videos.

I’m not proud of this, but when Adele dropped the “Hello” single and video last Friday, one of my first thoughts was “I would love to see Taylor Swift’s face this morning.” Yes, one of the first places I went was to pit two enormously successful women against each other. As I said, I’m not proud. But to be fair to myself, there’s a lot of legitimate compare-and-contrasting going on between Adele and Swifty. Also, to be fair: both women are total professionals and their competition (or the media speculation about their competition) is completely at the professional level. Swifty isn’t singing songs about “Bad Blood” with Adele, nor is Taylor telling Vanity Fair that Adele is going to hell for whatever reason. Adele has barely said one word to or about Taylor in public. There is no “feud” in the gossip sense, they are just two professionals with a healthy sense of competition.

As for the comparing and contrasting… if we’re being honest, it’s sort of one-sided. Adele’s last studio album, 21, has sold 30 million copies and is one of the top-five best selling albums of all time. Taylor has sold about 27 million copies of all of her albums combined. Taylor held the record for most-viewed video within a 24-hour period for “Bad Blood” when it was viewed 20.1 million times on Vevo after weeks of hype, Instagrams, tweets and a big debut at the Billboard Awards (plus “Bad Blood” starred Taylor’s squad of A-list friends). With minimal advanced hype, a grand total of three Instagram posts and one Facebook post, Adele smashed Taylor’s record. “Hello” was viewed 25 million times on Vevo in a single day.

Taylor also holds/held a lot of records for downloads, single sales and album sales for 1989. Adele’s “Hello” is already the #1 download in 85 countries and there’s every expectation that when the album drops in November, Adele will smash every record then too. Adele was able to do all of this with such minimal social media effort. The only press she did was on the day she dropped her first single – she did not sit down for an advanced Rolling Stone interview or anything else, although (to be fair) I’m sure those magazine interviews are coming.

As of Sunday, Taylor has made no mention of Adele on her social media. Which is weird, because she’s usually pretty engaged with what’s going on with other artists, right? Lots of celebrities have done shout-outs to Adele on their social media, but not Taylor. Will she say anything? Is Adele – more than anyone else – the one Taylor could never collect as a friend?

Oh, and let’s not forget these two have been up for the same award before: in 2013, Taylor and Adele were up for the Golden Globe for Best Song, which Adele won for “Skyfall.” Adele would go on to win the Oscar while Taylor wasn’t even nominated. Remember Taylor’s face when Adele won at the Globes? That’s why one of my first thoughts was “I would love to see Taylor Swift’s face this morning.”

Lady Gaga Makes An (Almost) Normal Bridesmaid

Lady Gaga is in the news lately for what she’s been wearing, but unlike her usual “I am basically wearing a palm tree” or “I am wearing a giant Pikachu costume as designed by Versace” she’s been photographed in normal attire, like a regular bikini and now, a non-flashy, normal, pink bridesmaid gown. Well, almost non-flashy. The J.Lo deep v-cut is a little attention grabbing. But I’ve seen wedding photos of bridesmaids in more revealing attire.

Ms. Gaga’s longtime friend got married in Mexico over the weekend. Hope her friend didn’t mind the paparazzi helicopter photos, but she had to know what she was getting into.

Gaga looked pretty and lovely in something sweet and girly, and were it not for the giant bright blonde Amy Winehouse-esque beehive, she would have achieved full normal. I think it’s far more interesting to see Gaga in subdued outfits and makeup now that we’ve seen her for years in over-the-top fashion.

And it’s interesting to see her amidst normal people, and not at the center of attention. For once, Lady Gaga was at an event and she wasn’t the star. I bet Gaga was so happy to give that to her friend (not being sarcastic). I wonder if her friend was worried that her wedding would be all about Gaga, but I think they’ve got a good, trustworthy group going on, and everyone gave the bride the proper attention and support. Damn, I’m getting all emotional now. F-cking weddings.

Christina Aguilera Lost All That Weight Because You Guys Are Haters

Christina Aguilera debuted a pretty slimmed down bod at the Billboard Music Awards earlier this month, which got everyone talking, of course. After all, a lady’s body is only good insofar as being good to look at, and we all know it’s more desirable to look at a skinny body than a “fat” (normal sized) one. Blah blah blah.

Anyway, some “insiders” have now claimed that Christina – who has famously been outspoken about how much she loves her curves – decided to drop the weight after pretty much being harassed by the general public about her weight.

From US Weekly (via DS):

“A lot of people were on her about her weight and it depressed her,” a friend said. “She went through a bad time because of the criticism.”

Aguilera is said to have signed up for the 1,600-calorie-a-day Fresh Diet program, which offers users different nutritious food options.

“She did it all on her own,” said the source. “She goes online and picks out her food.”

Here’s one thing I will never, ever understand: why the fuck you would pay someone to bring you fresh food instead of… going shopping for fresh food. I guarantee you that “fresh diet” costs about $300 per week – which she could easily get a month’s worth of healthy food for one on. As someone who’s working on shedding some pounds myself (and more than Xtina’s 20), I still relish my laziness but I can at least bring myself to pick out some healthy food options. Lord.

Anyway, it’s a shame that people still bully women about their bodies (no one harasses James Gandolfini about his massive gut) and that it got to her enough to change. Losing weight and being healthy as great, but it should be for the right reasons – health, YOURSELF – rather than anyone else or it’ll just come right back when the outside world inevitably doesn’t like something else about you. Bullshit.

Justin Bieber is an insufferable neighbor, with all the spitting on people and insane parties, but none of that even compares to his new alleged activity: riding around on Segways, smoking pot. Brilliant. If this is what you do in your spare time, you have too much money. It’s not that this behavior tops anything else — it’s just that it’s f-cking hilarious. From TMZ:

… neighbors tell us they saw him over the long weekend riding a Segway and smoking a joint … smack in front of neighborhood kids. … neighbors say on Sunday Justin was riding side by side with a buddy, who was also smoking a joint on his Segway.

Oh, no! Won’t somebody PLEASE think of the children???

He also sucks because of his Ferrari and motorcycle (why does he have these?) and other annoying car-related incidents.

Multiple neighbors in the exclusive, gated Calabasas community say Bieber and his friends have turned the neighborhood upside down.  We’re told they’ve called cops twice in the last five days over excruciatingly loud noise coming from Bieber’s house where parties were going full-bore at 3 AM.

Neighbors tell us Justin has been a real problem in his Ferrari and on his motorcycle.  Aside from the incident Monday night when he was allegedly roaring through the neighborhood, we’re told Justin frequently drives recklessly.  Residents say Justin almost struck a neighbor pulling out of his driveway Sunday.

Neighbors tell us the homeowner’s board is planning on taking action — for starters, they’ve talked to cops who promise they will begin towing vehicles that are left on the street overnight — a frequent occurrence when Bieber or his friends throw parties.

We’re also told the board believes Bieber is running a business from his house — something prohibited by the association rules.  The way they see it — people living at the house are managing Justin’s life, which is part of his career. They are especially irked that security guards sleep in the garage.

Why the F-CK did he move to Calabasas??? Calabasas is where rich conservative families life. It is not party central. It is not hip. If you want to live somewhere quiet and pleasant and ride horses, then you live in Calabasas. If you want to party like Iggy Pop, you live somewhere else. So in case you’re wondering why neighbors would care so much about this shit, that is why. It’s Calabasas.

Chris Brown and Justin Bieber have more in common every day. They both don’t know how to drive and they suck as neighbors.

Nobody Likes Justin Bieber

Justin Bieber won the Milestone Award at the 2013 Billboard Awards this weekend, but the crowd wasn’t too impressed, they booed him.

As Bieber accepted his award, the cameras panned to a couple females losing their mind over Bieber’s win, but the boos could still be heard. Before speaking, Justin gazed at the crowd for a prolonged period of time. At least I think he was, he was wearing mirrored sunglasses, probably because he was stoned out of his head. When he finally spoke he said this:

“I’m 19 years old, and I think I’m doing a pretty good job. And basically, from my heart, I just really wanna say, it should really be about the music. It should be about the craft. The craft that I’m making. This is not a gimmick. This is not a gimmick, and I’m an artist and I should be taken seriously and all this other bull should not be spoken of.”

Sounds like someone has been hanging out with Anne Hathaway lately. Making crafts.
