Mad Men‘s Betty Draper Francis made a rape joke on the Season 6 premiere, and it wasn’t funny, it was weird.
We already know what a twisted bitch she is, but is she really so demented, jealous and evil to suggest her husband raped a 15-year-old girl?
In the Mad Men season opener, we meet Sandy, Sally’s teenaged friend, a very gifted violinist. She performs for Henry, Betty, Sally and Bobby at their home, and stays over to spend the night with Sally.
As Betty piles into bed with Henry, she says sweetly, “You’re so calm from all that violin.”
“She plays beautifully,” Henry replies, not looking up from his newspaper.
“You and Bobby had the same look on your face when she was playing. She’s a year older than Sally, shame on you,” Betty says with a grin.
Henry, who thinks Betty is still being playful, fully unaware of where she’s going with this, says: “No one would blame me for leaving you for a teenaged musician!”
“She’s just in the next room,” Betty mentions. “Why don’t you go in there and rape her? I’ll hold her arms down.”
And just like that, our jaws HIT. THE. GROUND.
“Betty, what the hell?” Henry can’t believe what his wife is suggesting.
“Well, you said you wanted to spice things up. Will it ruin it if I’m there? You know, if you want to be alone with her, I’ll put on my housecoat and take Sally for a ride. You can stick a rag in her mouth and you won’t wake the boys.”
“Alright, alright, Betty,” warns Henry.
Betty flashes a beautiful smile and adds, “My goodness, you’re blushing.”
What the hell? Like I said, we knew Betty was a project, but why on earth would she suggest something so heinous, sick and disturbing? There MUST be something about Betty that we don’t know. This just isn’t a normal way of thinking. Why do you think Betty made the rape joke? Did she suffer some horrific trauma in her past? Is she just THAT jealous that even a 15-year old girl is considered a threat to her? Or does she know something we don’t know?
Betty also dyed her hair black in the Mad Men Season 6 premiere, could it be a sign of an even darker side of Betty to come?
Creator Matt Weiner has suggested this season will have a lot of mind warping moments, and this bizarre scene was surely one of them.
