Benedict Cumberbatch: My impulsivity is ‘why I do stupid things sometimes’

bendy big issue

Here is Benedict Cumberbatch’s cover of The Big Issue, a UK publication that has been “relaunched” or something. This isn’t the first time Bendy has given a major interview to The Big Issue, and the editor even admitted that they just put him on the cover again because his issues always sell like crazy. I’m also including some photos of our Otter looking surprisingly dapper at the 2nd Annual Breakthrough Prize Awards held at NASA Ames research center on Sunday. These are the first post-haircut, post-Cumbercurl photos that I’ve genuinely liked. Cutting off the Cumbercurls was such a terrible mistake! Thankfully, he seems to be letting the bad haircut grow out. As for The Big Issue… there are some quotes. I’m not going to transcribe the whole thing (the bulk of it is about Alan Turing, much of which we’ve heard before), so here are some meager highlights:

When he was 32, he thought ‘more seismic things of adulthood would have come, including being a father.’

Talking about his private life: ‘It always come back to haunt me in strange ways. I have been judged for my relationships or for not being a father in the weirdest ways. All I’ll say is when it’s right, it’s right.’

Thoughts on life and ageing: “I’m starting to realize you can say no to things and it won’t all fall to pieces. I really want to do more, by which I mean less work and more of other things. I want to be more present for other people. As I get older I increasingly feel the need to step back, ask what I’m neglecting, what do other people need of me. I want to be more impulsive, to be able to suddenly go away for the weekend. Whenever I get the rare chance to be impulsive I grab it with both hands, which is why I do stupid things sometimes. Having said that, I don’t know how long I’ll ride a motorbike for, I’m sure if and when I become a dad I won’t want to do that anymore.”

[From The Big Issue, print edition]

Many of you are already picking apart his thoughts on impulsivity and how he does “stupid things sometimes.” Like, is he talking about proposing to Sophie explicitly? Was his engagement an impulsive, stupid thing? All I can say is that after reading the whole article – conducted a few weeks before his engagement announcement – it sounds more like a man who just learned his life is going to turn upside down by fatherhood. Yes, I think Sophie is pregnant. I thought it was just idle, somewhat insulting gossip last week – as in, “Oh, of course he proposed, she’s obviously pregnant because that’s the only reason he would propose so soon” – but now I’m kind of down with that theory. He’s not talking like a guy who has found the love of his life. He’s talking like a guy who got a girl pregnant and is trying to make the best out of the situation.

PS… MOAR Cumber to come… the LA premiere of TIG was last night, plus lots of new quotes. Stay tuned and no threadjacking.

Jennifer Aniston Talks Hair in Marie Claire

Jennifer Aniston Talks Hair in Marie Claire | jennifer aniston celebrity quotes

On her natural hair:

I have naturally wavy, frizzy Greek hair, and over the years it’s taken a beating from blow-dryers, flatirons, curlers, and extensions, which I think are the most damaging. I couldn’t get it to grow because it just kept breaking. Even when it was longer, it didn’t look long because the ends were so thin. I ended up using clip-in pieces just to fill it out.

On hair envy:

Kate Middleton. Does she do her hair herself? She’s got a hard job, being scrutinized like that. When I have a bad hair day, my hair just goes in a clip.

On whether she has bad hair days:

In elementary school, I would use a curling iron and end up burning my forehead. I was a closeted hairdresser. I did my mom’s highlights with one of those caps with the holes—I even gave her a perm! I may have had another career if the acting thing hadn’t worked out.

… says Jennifer in Marie Claire.

Michelle Williams is growing out her hair, admits ‘the mid-stage is insufferable’

Here are some photos of Michelle Williams going into the Ed Sullivan Theater last night, about to appear on The Late Show with David Letterman to promote Oz the Great and Powerful. Michelle’s suit/dress thing is Dior – it’s cute and conservative, but I think it’s got built-in hip enhancers or something so that size-zero ladies look like they have Kardashian hips. Weird. Anyway, the real story is that Michelle seems to be growing out her beloved pixie cut and that her hair is currently in sort of an awkward stage (IMO).

Unlike Miley Cyrus, Michelle Williams is destined to go long again. After rocking a famously admired blonde pixie for years, the Oscar-nominated actress, 32, is growing out the locks, she told E! News.

“I think I’m ready,” the Oz the Great and Powerful star, whose locks do indeed appear longer, said. “It’s on its way, slowly but surely.” Williams added that the short-to-long process has daunted her for years.

“That’s why I’ve stayed with short hair for so long,” Jason Segel’s love said. “The mid-stage is insufferable. It’s really hard on your self-esteem.”

One person who may cheer William’s longer tresses? Daughter Matilda, 8.

“What Matilda would love is for her mom to grow out the cropped hair, though that’s unlikely to happen any time soon,” Williams told ELLE back in November 2011. Indeed, it seemed that Williams’ Twiggy-like look was a tribute to Matilda’s late father, Heath Ledger.

“Straight men across the board are not into this hair!” Williams told ELLE. “I cut it for the one straight man who has ever liked short hair and I wear it in memorial of somebody who really loved it.” Ledger died of a drug overdose in January 2008 at age 28.

[From Us Weekly]

Whenever I’m bitching about bangs, inevitably some bangs-defender trolls me (on every single post), writing something like “I don’t understand why you hate these bangs so much? Why have you never explained that?” Because I explain it all the time. Because bangs rarely look good on adult women (but there are SOME exceptions). Because too many women get bangs that are too thick, too long or too short. And because of what Michelle is describing so perfectly – it’s insufferable HELL trying to grow out an unflattering short-hair or bangs look once you’ve realized you’ve made a terrible (bangsy) mistake. I’ll admit that I’ve often thought about trying a shorter haircut (not as short as Michelle’s, but still- short). Then I remember the last time my hair was cut above my shoulders (more than a decade ago) and I remember what a terrible time I had growing that crap out. I’m not saying all women should have long hair (definitely not), but I wish more women would be realistic about how long it’s going to take to correct a bad haircut or styling choice made on impulse. Think of how awkward Michelle Obama is going to look as she tries to grow out her midlife-crisis hair.

Anne Hathaway in floral Erdem at the PGAs: a bright spot in a sea of black dresses?

These are some photos from last night’s Producers Guild Awards, which… as awards go, this is a decent indicator of which film is going to win Best Picture. Sometimes. Probably. So does it surprise you that Argo picked up the top award, the Darryl F. Zanuck Award? So I guess Argo is going into the Oscars as the “favorite”. You can read more of who won what here at Deadline. This post is just about fashion!

So let’s start with the one everybody loves to loathe, Anne Hathaway. She wore Erdem. I really dislike this whole look, and yet… I’m kind of glad Annie is mixing it up. Almost all of the ladies at this event were wearing black and styled so “Blah, I don’t care, this isn’t a real awards show.” Yes, Anne is a try-hard. But that’s what makes her so fun to talk about! I’m also glad she’s trying different things with her hair.

Nicole Kidman in L’Wren Scott. Naomi Watts in Victoria Beckham. I love Nicole’s look (but I almost always love L’Wren’s stuff) but Nicole’s hair is rough. Naomi’s look is just blah. This was not a good event for fashion.

Jennifer Garner in Oscar de la Renta. Eh. It’s really boring, especially on her.

Amanda Seyfried in Roland Mouret. Did you know Amanda used to have the same stylist as Jennifer Lawrence? The stylist (Elizabeth Stewart) has a major problem with A) colors and B) boobs. Lawrence fired her (and hired Rachel Zoe) last year, so now Amanda gets all of this woman’s attention.

Jessica Alba in Elie Saab. YIKES. First of all, the dress is just too “I’m a sparkly widow!” And WTF is going on with the styling? Her hair is a hot mess.

Kerry Washington in MARCHESA. For why?!? Oh, right. Harvey Weinstein produced Django. Got it. Also: WTF is with her hair? Was there some kind of hair stylist strike last night and no one told me? This whole post is a bad hair buffet of fugness.
