Four years after he was fired, Matt Lauer is dating a NYC-based PR executive

NBC fires Matt Lauer after complaint about 'inappropriate sexual behavior' **FILE PHOTOS**

It’s only Wednesday and People Magazine had published two different stories about Matt Lauer. While People Mag has always been a go-to outlet for Lauer and his exclusives, I’ve never really understood what People gets out of it. Yes, they’re staying “on the good side” of a credibly accused rapist and serial sexual harasser so that they get those exclusives, but is it worth it? The Lauer story People ran on Monday was about how Lauer’s life has “changed” since he was fired in four years ago (almost exactly) by NBC News:

It has been four years since Matt Lauer was ousted from the Today show. On Nov. 29, 2017, NBC revealed that the former anchor was fired due to a complaint of “inappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace.” Since then, Lauer, 63, has “lost a lot of friends,” a source tells PEOPLE.

“People would check up on him for a while, but that’s stopped to a degree,” the source says. “He just stays to himself, he doesn’t really reach out to people very much anymore or engage them and so he’s been losing touch with a lot of people.”

Lauer’s “lavish lifestyle” also had to change, the source says. “When he left the Today show, he didn’t get paid a penny after he got fired. NBC stuck with that. He’s presumably sitting on mountains of money but then again, he had a lot of money in real estate.”

Lauer was fired one month after sexual abuse allegations against Harvey Weinstein kicked off the #MeToo movement. In the four years since, Lauer has kept a low profile. “He only wants to talk to people who are gonna take his side,” the source says of Lauer. “He still feels like he got railroaded.”

[From People]

He did not get “railroaded” and no one has any sympathy for a man who tied up millions of dollars in Manhattan and Hamptons real estate. It’s like we’re supposed to have pity for a poor rapist who isn’t financially liquid!! Jesus. Of course his old friends aren’t checking in with him, he was credibly accused of rape!! He harassed women for decades! His old friends are disgusted. Meanwhile, People’s second story was also a doozy:

In the years since he was fired by NBC over accusations of sexual harassment, Matt Lauer has found romance with PR executive Shamin Abas, a source tells PEOPLE. On Nov. 29, 2017, NBC revealed that a complaint of “inappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace” had been filed against the former Today anchor.

Four years later, the source says Abas, 52, is “very happy” in her relationship with Lauer, 63. The couple met through work about 20 years ago and remained friends. Following Lauer’s divorce from ex-wife Annette Roque in 2019, he and Abas began dating.

Lauer and Abas both live in New York and spend time with each other between her work travels, according to the source, who adds: “She is a dedicated businesswoman who loves to work. She is independent and has made a nice life for herself.”

The Welsh-born publicist was previously married twice, first to a Detroit-based dentist and then to nightclub entrepreneur Frank Cilione. As for Lauer, the source says Abas supports him “in every way” and that his past does not affect her business.

[From People]

A PR executive you say? Perhaps that solves the mystery of why People Magazine published back-to-back stories this week, both of which seemingly feign sympathy for him. Is the new girlfriend trying to rehabilitate his image? I would say yes, but I doubt a competent PR professional would be this ham-fisted. This seems more like People’s attempt to do a “four years later, people still hate this guy” story.

Katie Couric knew that Matt Lauer was sexually harassing women at ‘Today’

avalon-0313343792

Matt Lauer was fired from NBC News/Today in late November 2017. He was outed as a rapist, a sexual predator, a serial sexual harasser and a completely disgusting man. Savannah Guthrie was his Today Show cohost at the time, and it was widely believed that Lauer hand-picked Guthrie soon after shoving out Ann Curry. But before all of that, Lauer’s most fruitful on-screen partnership was with Katie Couric. They sort of redefined the morning show co-anchor format and for years, they beat everyone in the ratings. As more of Couric’s memoir, Going There, is excerpted, I think I have a better understanding of why Lauer and Couric’s partnership was so successful. They’re birds of a feather, and they both hate women. So, the NY Post has some quotes from Couric’s book about Matt Lauer and they’re just as bad as I expected them to be.

What Lauer told her: Katie Couric wrote in the book that Lauer allegedly said that sometimes women came into his office “crying,” and he worried that if they sat next to him on the sofa, he “can’t even put [his] arm around them.” The former anchor said she tried to “imagine such a scene taking place” and advised Lauer that “he cannot do that — you cannot put your arm around them.”

Couric says one woman told her about Lauer’s sexual harassment: Couric goes on to claim one woman confided in her after she received an inappropriate email from Lauer following a segment with biographer Kitty Kelley for her tell-all book on the Bush family in September 2004. A female producer who retold the story to Couric said she reached out to Lauer to congratulate him on the combative interview. The unnamed producer said that Lauer asked if she was “trying to butter him up” in an email. When she said that was not the case, as Couric wrote, Lauer reportedly responded offering to “show her” how to butter him up and suggested she “spread it on her thighs.” Couric also wrote that the producer told her that he proceeded to invite her into his office, requesting she wears a “skirt that came off easily.”

Couric says that everybody was having sex at the office: This was all part of a culture where sex and affairs were rife in the workplace, Couric said, nothing that she later learned about “a secret office they called ‘the Bunker.’” Couric alleged that only an unnamed “male anchor” had the key to use it for “one-on-one encounters, and I don’t mean interviews,” she wrote.

She quotes Lauer too: “’This MeToo stuff feels like it’s getting kind of out of control,’” Lauer reportedly told her. “’It feels like a witch hunt.’” She added that she thought Lauer was “worried about a lack of due process, people’s livelihoods and reputations being destroyed.”

She heard some rumors: She heard office “scuttlebutt” that Lauer had had a fling at the 2014 Sochi Olympics. In 2018, Brooke Nevils, a former NBC producer in Sochi, accused Lauer of raping her in his Sochi hotel room, prompting his exit from “Today.” Although Couric initially thought it was “gross” that Lauer was cheating on his now ex-wife Annette, and taking advantage of a young staffer, she added: “The general rule at the time was, ‘It’s none of your business. A don’t-ask-don’t-tell culture where anything goes, and everything did.” Couric wrote in her book that she assumed it was a “consensual fling” and didn’t “consider talking to the young employee” for fear of “embarrassing” her.

A rumor about Lauer’s ex-wife: Couric also wrote in the book, out Oct. 26, that she also heard “rumors” that Annette Lauer had called the control room one morning looking for her husband and demanding the phone number of a TV anchor he had been linked with.

She’s not abandoning Lauer: But when Lauer was fired, Couric did reach out to him, calling him a “decent man” whom she felt “heartless to abandon.” After initially texting with him after his NBC exit, she couldn’t bring herself to keep the friendship up, noting she’s “sad” he thinks she “betrayed him.” “But he betrayed me, too, by how he behaved behind closed doors at the show we both cared about so much,” she said.

She spoke to Lauer’s victims: She also claimed in her book that she “connected” with “women Matt damaged” and was able to “hear the shame and humiliation in their voices…I suspect they’ll be dealing with this for the rest of their lives.”

[From The NY Post]

What the actual f–k is all of this??? Matt Lauer harassed, abused and raped women within the NBC News environment. Couric likely did not know the extent of it, but she clearly – and by her own description – had an idea of Lauer’s predatory, indecent and harassing behavior. And she still called him after he was fired (for rape!!) and describes him as a “decent man”? And the way she talks about the women he hurt is disgusting too. It’s like she’s getting off on their degradation.

Donald Trump is fine with letting trans people use whichever bathroom they want

150942PCN_DonaldTrump021

I keep losing track of Donald Trump’s various wars on media outlets, but I guess he’s okay with NBC this week, because he appeared on Thursday morning’s Today Show for an exclusive interview/town hall which is getting wide coverage, mostly because Trump answered some questions about LGBTQ issues and more specifically, the North Carolina “bathroom law.” North Carolina passed their own draconian “religious freedom” law last month, which basically entitles every anti-gay bigot the “right” to discriminate against LGBTQ people, and even more specifically, it says that trans individuals can only use the public bathrooms which correspond to the gender on their birth certificate. The whole thing is a clusterwhoops, and North Carolina is losing millions of dollars as major businesses and artists boycott the state. The GOP platform is basically that these kinds of “religious freedom” laws are great and every state should have them. But Trump disagreed, saying:

“Well look North Carolina did something that was very strong and they’re paying a big price and there’s a lot of problems. And one of the best answers I heard was from a commentator yesterday saying, ‘Leave it the way it is right now, there have been very few problems, leave it the way it is.’ There have been very few complaints the way it is. People go, they use the bathroom that they feel is appropriate, there has been so little trouble.”

Today show co-host Matt Lauer then asked Trump, “Do you have any transgender people working in your organization?”

“I don’t know, I really don’t know,” Trump told Lauer. “I probably do, I really don’t know.”

“So if Caitlyn Jenner were to walk into Trump Tower and want to use the bathroom, you would be fine with her using any bathroom she chooses?” Lauer asked.

“That is correct,” Trump responded.

[From E! News]

Ted Cruz is already bashing Trump for his comments, but I have to think that Trump is already maneuvering into a general-election position, which… I don’t know, is actually pretty smart? I’m not saying I’m suddenly a Trump supporter, I’m just saying A) he’s smart to begin maneuvering his public positions to a more centrist platform and B) Trump’s words about the “bathroom issue” are actually not problematic at all.

Of course, the Trump giveth and the Trump taketh away. No sooner did he say something relatively enlightened about LGBTQ people than he declared that taking Andrew Jackson off of the $20 bill was pure political correctness.” Jackson is being replaced with Harriet Tubman, which is great and it’s what activists wanted. The original plan was to replace Alexander Hamilton on the $10 bill, but Lin-Manuel Miranda saved Hamilton for everybody. So now we’re getting $20 Tubman and Trump is acting as an apologist for Andrew Jackson… who engineered a genocide. Or as Trump said, “he was someone very important to this country.” Trump’s solution? Put Tubman on the $2 bill. Oh, Trump.

Here’s the $20 bill part.

And here’s the LGBTQ part.

Kit Harington is ‘so proud’ of ‘Hardhome’: ‘I never pat myself on the back but…’

wenn22546881

Here are some new photos of Kit Harington out and about in NYC yesterday. He’s adorable, isn’t he? He really, really loves skinny jeans. He’s so tiny too, it’s sort of weird to see him in such tight pants. I kind of wonder if he needs to go up a size? I’m not sure if the skinny jeans are supposed to look like that on his leg and it seems like he might have trouble walking. Also: I’m pretty sure I have a very similar sweater. I bought it at Old Navy. In the women’s section.

Are you still thinking about the latest Game of Thrones episode, “Hardhome”? I am. God, that was so epic. And Kit Harington was a big part of why it was epic. I know we tease poor Kit about his whiney “don’t hate me because I’m beautiful” routine, and I know we tease him about being a wooden, sad-faced bastard on GoT, but I truly think Kit has grown a lot as an actor this season specifically. My theory is that once Jon Snow became the Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch, Kit finally got to play something different, something less sad-faced and more interesting.

Surprisingly, Kit was in NYC to promote Testament of Youth, the film he did with Alicia Vikander. He did several new interviews yesterday, which means it’s time for another episode of “Celebitchy Presents: Kit Harington Says Words.” Huzzah! What’s funny is that even though he was supposed to be talking about the film, people just wanted to talk about GoT and Hardhome. Kit told E! News that he knew when they were making the episode that it was going to be really good. Kit says the “end product of what they produced for ‘Hardhome’ was amazing…I thought it was brilliant. I really, really loved it. I was so proud of it and happy with it. I never pat myself on the back but I thought, why not? It was great!”

http://www.eonline.com/news/661886/game-of-thrones-kit-harington-sounds-off-on-that-epic-battle-scene-it-was-heavy

Kit also said words to Matt Lauer. Kit’s mum doesn’t like to watch GoT because of all the violence, and Kit successfully avoids whining about his beauty and fame again.

And here’s Kit talking Access Hollywood. Billy Bush is super-annoying here but Kit is rather charming.

Kim Kardashian wears Narciso Rodriguez, discusses Bruce Jenner’s transition

wenn22419044

Here’s one of Kim Kardashian’s latest fashion failures. These photos are from the Variety ‘Power of Women’ luncheon on Friday in NYC. Kim’s cream look is Narciso Rodriguez, with Giambattista Valli shoes. Ordinarily, I adore Narciso Rodriguez’s designs. They almost always look clean, fresh and deceptively simple. Thank God we always count on Kim to make high fashion look p0rn-chic.

Kim and her siblings were actually out in force on social media on Friday night to show their support for Bruce Jenner during and after his 20/20 special with Diane Sawyer. Kim posted photos of herself and Bruce with the messages, “Love is the courage to live the truest, best version of yourself. Bruce is love. I love you Bruce. #ProudDaughter” and “It might not always be easy but we support you no matter what! Your honesty has opened the doors for others to be courageous and live an authentic life! #respect #hero #family.”

Kim also discusses Bruce in a pre-taped interview with Matt Lauer, which will air on Monday. You can see a clip of the interview here, but all Kim says that she and the whole family “really support” Bruce and “I think there is still an adjustment and there’s family therapy, and we’re really close.”

wenn22419491

As I said, Kim wasn’t the only one of Bruce’s kids to post something on social media – even The Sock One tweeted something (Rob called Bruce a “role model”). Meanwhile, Khloe tweeted: “Just finished watching the #BruceJennerInterview with the family. Bruzer, I’m soooo proud of you! Dads really are heroes [sic]” and she posted this amazing Instagram too:

Angelina Jolie sat down with Al Roker for her first post-pox TV interview

wenn21962016

It’s consistently funny to me that Angelina Jolie refuses to sit down for interviews with Matt Lauer. She was always close to Ann Curry, and after Lauer pushed Curry out of the morning anchor position, Angelina has never sat down on the couch with Lauer. Maybe she never liked him? I have no idea. But Unbroken was released by Universal, so it’s corporate synergy for the Today Show and NBC to promote the film, so Angelina once again managed to find a way to avoid Lauer altogether. First she did an NBC special with Tom Brokaw, and then this week she sat down for her first TV interview since contracting chicken pox. Who did the interview? Why, Al Roker, of course.

Visit NBCNews.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

“I would love to think of myself of the classic mom at home…” Interesting. She’s always said she’s a terrible cook and I tend to believe her. She’s not the mom in the kitchen, baking cookies. She’s the mom ordering Chinese food or pizzas or whatever. If you watch the interview to the end, Al Roker says that he did ask Angelina about the Sony Hack emails and she didn’t want to say anything on the record. So… Angelina gets to say “no comment” on camera (and they edit it out) and Amy Adams gets kicked off the program for the same thing? Interesting.

A few more Jolie stories…Angelina spoke to the Los Angeles Times about the decision to not include Louis Zamperini’s born-again conversion in the film – go here to read. What she says makes sense, and I agree, the logical conclusion to the film is when (spoiler?) Louis comes home from the war. Angelina also spoke to The Daily Mirror this week and she ended up talking about what it’s like to finally be married to Brad:

“What was lovely about it was that we didn’t feel there was something missing or we needed to get married. We felt so complete, and the commitment to children is one that you cannot walk away from, so we already had that commitment. It was really that we wanted to re-commit and commit in a deeper way, and we wanted to celebrate the union with our children. And it does feel different when you say, ‘my husband’ or ‘my wife’. It warms you in a different way and you look at that person a little differently. As soon as it was all over, we all just changed clothes and hung out. It was just a very happy time. It wasn’t this monumental change – we were just very happy and sure, and it’s quite an extraordinary feeling to be so sure. It gives you peace.”

[From The Daily Mirror]

What’s interesting to me is that in the scope of celebrity/gossip stories of 2014, the Jolie-Pitt wedding was pretty boring. I mean, there were big stories about the wedding (the out-of-nowhere announcement, the wedding photos), but if you ask me what the biggest celebrity wedding of the year was, I would have to say George Clooney and Amal. That wedding was so thirsty, it was crazy.
