Khloe Kardashian making medical

wenn5744035

There are 20 million new stories about Lamar Odom from the past 24 hours, and every single one of them is really depressing. I won’t be doing full, extensive coverage of every part of this tragedy, just so you know. I find some of it (much of it) to be morbid, victim-blamey and sordid. As of right now, Lamar’s medical condition is still dire and Khloe Kardashian is still by his side. Here are some pieces of information that I could stomach.

Khloe and Lamar are still legally married. I think we already knew this, but it’s interesting to get it confirmed. According to TMZ, Khloe and Lamar did eventually sign the divorce papers but the family court has such a backlog, the divorce hasn’t come through yet. So Khloe is still legally his wife. Now Khloe is making medical decisions on Lamar’s behalf, because he is in a coma. Sources tell TMZ that Khloe has already made several medical decisions for Lamar. Sources tell People that Lamar never made a living will or directed anyone to make medical decisions on his behalf, so everything is falling to Khloe.

The drugs. Initially, people were claiming that Lamar had only been taking “herbal Viagra,” but now multiple media outlets report that Lamar was under the influence of cocaine as well. And probably other drugs, with sources telling People that there were “opiates” in his system too. He likely had track marks on his arms too.

Lamar’s condition. It’s not good. Family sources say Lamar has had “a couple strokes” while in the hospital. A family source also tells People: “They’re pretty sure this is goodbye, but they’re praying for a miracle. They know that God has the power to heal him, but that’s really the last hope at this point. This is really bad.”

Lamar’s ex-wife & kids are at the hospital too. The Daily Mail has more here.

Initially, Khloe and Kris Jenner went to Lamar’s bedside first – Khloe was there within hours, and she apparently asked her mom to come with her for moral support. Kim Kardashian ended up canceling her baby shower so she could go to Vegas later on Wednesday to meet up with her sister and mom – go here to see the photos.

Update: There’s a lot of misinformation out there, but as of 11:15 am EST, Lamar is still alive, on life support, and sources say his condition is no better or worse than it was yesterday

Kelly Rutherford’s ex’s lawyer: he will continue to promote Kelly’s time with kids

Kelly Rutherford arrives to a Manhattan court in New York without her children
These are photos of Kelly Rutherford outside court in New York City yesterday, where she was ordered to surrender her two children to be flown to Monaco with their grandmother, who was waiting for them in court. This was a predictable outcome to a ridiculous situation she created, which caused needless stress and drama in her children’s lives. Kelly will likely do another interview soon where she cries and moans to the media about ‘Murica and how her children were deported. (I’m not going to treat whatever she says as breaking news, just FYI.) Meanwhile her ex, Daniel Giersch, has been nothing but a class act throughout this entire custody battle, despite how frustrating it must be to deal with this woman. (Thanks to Becks for commenting with this interview that Giersch did last year about an app he developed with the help of his kids. I’ve read it before but I wouldn’t have remembered it. He comes across very well.)

It’s worth noting that we only have the details from the first few minutes inside the courtroom because Giersch’s lawyers requested that the media not be present, in order to protect his children’s privacy. We could have heard the judge absolutely owning Kelly, but she surely wanted the press there anyway because narcissists want attention, good or bad. Instead we only know that she was told by the judge not to directly address her, and that the judge was angry that Kelly didn’t bring the children with her as ordered. Kelly’s lawyer claimed that this was to avoid the “media circus,” but really it was just another tactic by Kelly in this game she’s playing. At least it ended well, no one was hurt physically, and the children got to go home with their oma as they should have done several days ago.

In statements to the press following the ruling, Giersch’s lawyers said that the children’s transition went well and that they seemed fine. He also said that Giersch has not changed his stance on Kelly spending time with the children. Think about that for a moment. Kelly just kidnapped her own kids and has done interview after interview smearing her ex. She’s repeatedly tried to cut her children’s father out of their lives and she talks as if their life in Monaco doesn’t count, but he’s still saying that he’s going to let her see the kids. Here are some statements from various lawyers. Pay attention to the mild shade thrown by one of Kelly’s former lawyers.

How the children seemed in the courtroom
“Kelly’s failure to deliver the children on Thursday likely bought them a one-way ticket to Monaco,” Michael Stutman, head of the family group at Mishcon de Reya New York and a lawyer not involved in the case, tells PEOPLE. “Given Kelly’s initial failure to send the children back, showing up without them was probably the nail in her coffin.”

The children were later brought to the courthouse through a side entrance to say goodbye to their mom and head to the airport with Giersch’s mother.

“The kids didn’t seem to look like they missed a beat. They were happy, they kissed their mother goodbye, they were happy to see their grandmother, they had smiles on their face. And by the way, they’re two beautiful little kids,” Giersch’s attorney Ira Garr told reporters. “The only complaint they had is they really wanted to get back to playing; it was boring in the courtroom.”

“They just hugged and said goodbye, and she said she’d see them soon, and they were very, very easily transitioned to their grandmother, who they know very well,” said Robert Michaels, another lawyer on Giersch’s team.

“It was done very civilly,” Garr added. “Ms. Rutherford said, ‘Oh, you’re going to see Papa, and you’re going to go with Oma.’ And the kids seemed fine…”

There will probably be safeguards in place so Kelly doesn’t pull this again
“After this episode, we will be speaking with our client and his attorney in Monaco and maybe considering taking different measures about future visits to the United States, how the passports are held or whether the visits need to be supervised, because we don’t want a reoccurrence of this a year from now,” Garr said.

Kelly’s former lawyer shades her
“It’s really unfortunate that it came to this, and that Hermes and Helena were forced to say goodbye to their mother in a courthouse, rather than having a natural transition,” Robert Wallack, a lawyer who represented Rutherford in federal court last year, tells PEOPLE. “However, today’s proceedings played out exactly as expected, and it now appears the next chapter of this story will be written in Monaco.”

Daniel’s lawyer says he’ll continue to let Kelly see the kids
“We are pleased that the American judicial system has prevailed,” Giersch’s attorney Fahi Takesh Hallin told ABC News in a statement. “Daniel’s request to exclude the press today from the courtroom was granted, to protect the children’s privacy. In addition, his stance of promoting Kelly’s time with the children has not changed.”

[From People and ABC News]

As of now, Rutherford hasn’t issued a statement but she did speak briefly with the paparazzi outside the courtroom. TMZ has video of her leaving court. She was wearing sunglasses and looked like she might have been crying but she was smiling at the paparazzi and seemed to relish the attention. She said “I have no words at this moment” but when asked how she felt, she said “like any parent that lost their kids.

The next hearing for this case is scheduled for September 3rd in Monaco. Daniel is likely to get sole custody and Kelly will be lucky to have supervised visits, I think.

Dan Abrams, ABC chief legal correspondent and Kelly’s close friend, has responded to this latest development with a mini rant about how it doesn’t make sense. You can read that on People.

Death with dignity advocate Brittany Maynard, 29, ended her own life

Brittany Maynard

This is Brittany Maynard’s People cover from a few weeks ago. By now, many of you know that Brittany took her own life on Saturday at her Portland, Oregon home. Brittany publicized her cause for months in the face of certain death. In April, she was given 6 months to live due to stage 4 glioblastoma. This final diagnosis followed surgery to remove the tumor, which returned and grew to twice its previous size. When Brittany learned that chemo wouldn’t save her life (and would make her quality of life worse), she moved from California to Oregon in order to access that state’s Death with Dignity Act. Brittany qualified under the law’s provisions and gained a prescripion to end her life on her own terms.

Brittany publicly decided on a date — Nov. 1 — just weeks before her 30th birthday. She spent her last months travelling with her husband, friends, and mother. Brittany expressed great relief at being able to choose not to die in the manner her disease would dictate. She was not suicidal, and she did not want to die. But Brittany knew she was dying, and she wanted to go out with dignity. She chose to leave the Earth before her quality of life declined too much. According to People, Brittany typed this message before taking her life:

“Goodbye to all my dear friends and family that I love. Today is the day I have chosen to pass away with dignity in the face of my terminal illness, this terrible brain cancer that has taken so much from me .. but would have taken so much more. The world is a beautiful place, travel has been my greatest teacher, my close friends and folks are the greatest givers. I even have a ring of support around my bed as I type … Goodbye world. Spread good energy. Pay it forward!”

[From People]

Brittany carried out her last months on earth with incredible strength. She invited people on her journey and allowed everyone a glimpse into her final days. Oregon is one of just a few states (including Washington and Vermont) that have Death with Dignity statutes in place (although other states are working on it). It’s a shame that every state hasn’t caught up yet; special interest groups work hard to deny people the right to make the ultimate decision on their own.

Here’s Brittany’s video from TheBrittanyFund.org.

Lara Stone: I’ve had lots of ups and downs regarding my body image over the past year | hollywood moms beauty body image

Supermodel Lara Stone, who welcomed her fist child in May last year, recently opened up about pregnancy and body image:

Pregnancy is supposed to be the most amazing time in a woman’s life. We’ve all heard stories of the glowing expectant mum, with toned legs and neat bump and the instant and deep connection with her unborn baby. I’m sure those pregnancies exist, but mine certainly wasn’t like that.

I was in maternity jeans at nine weeks. I was bloated all over, had limp, greasy hair, no energy and I could eat (and waddle) for England. I felt terrible for feeling this way because I actually had an easy pregnancy. I had no morning sickness, no bleeding, no pain and my baby and I were perfectly healthy. Yet I didn’t get that earth mother feeling I’d been hoping for.

There is so much pressure these days to look fantastic during pregnancy and to lose the baby weight within days of leaving hospital. I have nothing against those who do, but it’s not normal.

Your body changes hugely during a pregnancy and it takes time to go back. I’ve had lots of ups and downs regarding my body image over the past year. On every level I know I should just be happy to have a lovely healthy baby, and I do count my blessings every day.

But seeing articles about me that say: “She’s brave to go outside looking like that”, “She’s struggling with her baby weight”, “Is she pregnant again?”, or “She can kiss her career goodbye” is painful. And it sends a bad message to other women reading it, who may be feeling bad about their own baby weight.

… says Lara in the Clean & Lean series, Pregnancy Guide.

Jay Leno says goodbye to ‘The Tonight Show’: will you miss him?

wenn21059752

Jay Leno’s long tenure at The Tonight Show is finally over. He said goodbye last night, signing off in an uncharacteristically emotional way, talking about how he lost his father, mother and brother in quick succession in the early years of The Tonight Show, and how The Tonight Show staffers became his family. At the end, he threw it to Garth Brooks to sing “I’ve Got Friends In Low Places” and that was that. It was actually a pretty graceful exit:

Before that (or after, I’m not sure, whatever), Billy Crystal and a group of celebrities including Kim Kardashian and Oprah sang to Leno. This was a mess.

Are you still mad at him? Eh. I don’t know. I think Conan O’Brien got a raw deal, but I also think that Jimmy Fallon is more suited for The Tonight Show, for whatever reason. Conan often comes across as a bitter guy, where Fallon seems like pure, unmitigated joy, and that’s more suitable for The Tonight Show. I think everyone is where they should be right now.

But that didn’t stop Leno’s “long goodbye” from taking a few detours along the way – a few weeks ago, Leno appeared on 60 Minutes where he basically said he was being pushed out because he was too old to know what’s “hip” these days, and he came really close to saying that NBC was “screwing him over”. So… we know for sure Leno still had some bitterness at the end. Oh well. I hope Jimmy does well. Fallon’s first week of the Tonight Show will air after the Olympics (which start tonight)!
