Jesse Eisenberg Vacations

Jesse Eisenberg feels guilty taking vacations: relatable?

I watched A Real Pain on Hulu over the weekend and enjoyed it so much. It’s just a sweet, sentimental, kind of old-fashioned (and I mean that as a compliment!) film with delightful characters. In the opening sequence alone, Jesse Eisenberg had me in hysterics with the way his character was set up. Jesse did the trifecta of being the writer-director-star, and his efforts just merited him a well-earned Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay. The film’s one other nomination, of course, went to Kieran Culkin for Best Supporting Actor, a category Kieran has been sweeping so far. But back to Jesse — he went on Jimmy Kimmel last week, before the Oscar nominations were announced, and the kinship between Jesse’s characters and his own anxious demeanor was on full display. Case in point: Jesse talked about how he feels guilty taking vacations. Keep reading to learn the type of trips he takes to allay some of his guilt.

If there is one type of character Jesse Eisenberg is known for playing, it’s guys with a wee bit of stress. OK, sometimes it’s full-blown anxiety.

Whether it was his Oscar-nominated turn as Mark Zuckerberg in The Social Network or his critically acclaimed role in the FX/Hulu miniseries Fleishman Is in Trouble, Jesse has a knack for personifying jittery characters.

He’s playing another one in his new film A Real Pain, which he also wrote and directed. The film follows Jesse as a disciplined guy and Kieran Culkin as his laissez-faire cousin taking a trip to Poland. It’s earned rave reviews.

Earlier this month, A Real Pain received two Oscar nominations. Jesse is up for Best Original Screenplay, while Kieran is competing for Best Supporting Actor.

Jesse stopped by Jimmy Kimmel Live! last week to talk about the movie, but one anecdote he shared about his vacation habits…or lack thereof…really caught people’s attention.

While discussing travel habits, Jimmy asked Jesse if he goes on vacations, which prompted the actor to say, “I don’t like vacations.”

Of course, he explained why. “I feel too guilty to go on a vacation. I have a very good life,” he said, noting that working as a film actor has him feeling “lucky” since he regularly travels for work.

As a result, he isn’t prone to laid-back vacations. “I can’t do that because I’m riddled with guilt,” he said.

He noted his vacation habits are more in line with that of his and Kieran’s A Real Pain characters who traveled to Poland for a Holocaust tour. “Those are the travels I do,” he said, using his last two vacations as an example. One was to a concentration camp in Austria, and the other was with his family to Timisoara, Romania, which is where the 1989 Communist revolutions began.

“That’s the only time I could go on vacation and not hate myself,” he said of the Romanian trip.

Jesse later admitted he hasn’t told his son about Disney World. “I went to Disneyland during his lifetime without him,” he said. “I was doing something in Shanghai, and they took me to Shanghai Disney. I told him about it and he said, ‘It sounded interesting, but when are we going back to Rwanda?’”

[From BuzzFeed via Yahoo]

It’s hilarious enough reading the quotes, but Holy Nervous Energy, Batman! Watching Jesse in motion as he relays his stories adds a whole other level of anxious vibes. To the point where I felt anxious thinking about just how anxious Jesse is as he bounds along in life, wishing he could relax just a little. And yet between us, I’m not the Oscar-nominated actor-writer! But really, Jesse was funny, genuine, and self-aware about just how extreme most of his behavior sounds. He also casually shared what I thought were really interesting tidbits about what a hands-on producer Emma Stone was on set. Plus, Jesse’s Kieran Culkin anecdotes were everything you’d expect and no less entertaining for it. As for feeling guilty on vacation… I cannot honestly recall ever experiencing that emotion under the circumstance of cherished time away from the usual routine. And I fully accept whatever that says about my character.

PS — I do hope Jesse’s son grows up to make a film about family vacations at the birthplace of communism in Romania, and other historical sites of human strife.

Blake Lively in Emanuel Ungaro in NY: the best look of her ‘Cafe Society’ tour?

FFN_GG_Lively_Blake_071516_52123719

Even though I think some of these straps are unnecessary, this dress might be my favorite from Blake Lively’s promotional fashion show. Blake saved the best for last! Maybe. Blake was spotted out in NYC on Friday wearing this Emanuel Ungaro dress. So much prettier than her premiere minidress, right? This should have been the premiere dress. And if Blake has been trying to start a trend during this pregnancy, it’s with under-boob cutouts on maternity clothes. I don’t really get why that’s a thing, but here we are.

Meanwhile, Blake appeared on the Tonight Show on Friday to promote Café Society. In this clip, Blake tells Jimmy Fallon that baby James calls Jimmy “dada,” and she has the video proof.

In this clip, Blake tells other stories about baby James. James points out when anyone – man or woman – has a belly and says “baby!” James also has a little lisp so for “stand” she says “shtand” and for “sit” she says “sh-t.” Blake also made a joke: “It should be illegal to be pregnant in New York in July. I swear, I’m going to make my water break just so I can cool down.”

And there you go. Incidentally, I read Vogue’s review of Café Society, and I came away pretty disturbed about the film and Woody Allen in general. Vogue says that Blake and Kristen Stewart are set up as woman/girl archetypes, as in Blake is playing the womanly bombshell that Jesse Eisenberg has to “settle” for despite the fact that he’s in love with the girlish, Lolita-esque character played by Kristen Stewart. Jesus, that’s so gross.

Kristen Stewart vs. Blake Lively: who had the better Cannes photocall style?

wenn23845231

Woody Allen’s Café Society is the opening night premiere of the Cannes Film Festival, and these are the photos from the day-time photocall for the film. Woody Allen, Jesse Eisenberg, Corey Stoll, Kristen Stewart and Blake Lively all came out for the photocall. And it was awkward. It was awkward because Blake didn’t wear a bra. And it was awkward because Woody Allen is Woody Allen.

As for the fashion… Kristen wore a Chanel skirt and top, plus she completed the look with some awesome Louboutin heels – the Louboutins are “Pigalle Follies marble pumps” and they are rather fabulous. I actually like K-Stew’s pencil skirt and I think this is a great silhouette for her, but the midriff-baring t-shirt looks like something grungy that’s been in her closet for a while. My biggest qualm about Kristen’s look is that her hair is so NOT CUTE here. I’m fine with the bleach-blonde and I’m fine with the cut. But don’t do a center part. And wash your hair, for Christ’s sake.

Blake Lively wore the first LOOK AT ME ensemble of this year’s Cannes – her red jumpsuit is Juan Carlos Obando and it’s fine. She barely even looks pregnant, although her bust has increased in size, and it wouldn’t hurt Blake to choose some ensembles with some built-in support for her girls, you know?

Comic-Con: Ben Affleck is a ‘burn out’ in new ‘Batfleck v. Superman’ trailer

Your regularly scheduled Gatfleck drama will continue with CB tomorrow, I’m sure. For today, I’m trying to do some of the big highlights from the past three days of Comic-Con, which sounds surprisingly good. I read one preview that made it sound like this year’s Comic-Con was going to be crap because Marvel wasn’t doing anything, but in Marvel’s absence, Warner Brothers and Disney really brought the dramz.

On Saturday, Warner Brothers did a big panel for all of their upcoming properties, like The Man From UNCLE, Pan, Suicide Squad and of course, Batman v. Superman. This was Ben Affleck’s first scheduled/work appearance since he and Jennifer Garner announced their split two weeks ago. Ben made sure to wear his wedding ring, because obviously that kind of BS matters (not really), and he was part of a panel that included Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot, Amy Adams, Jesse Eisenberg and director Zack Snyder. They introduced the newest trailer, which I’ll discuss in a moment. Ben was asked why he decided to become The Batfleck and he told an obviously pre-rehearsed story about meeting Christian Bale and getting his blessing:

“If I thought too hard about the actors who played the part before, I couldn’t take the job. George Clooney did great, Christian Bale … I talked to Zack and I was like are you sure, you know? And he said I have this vision, I have this idea for the guy and you’re perfect for it. What do you mean? [He’s at] the end of his rope, he’s a burn out [laughs] … The truth was that he took me through he process of creating this character that I quite almost didn’t see and at the end of it I was astonished … That was exactly what you pitched me and I wasn’t sure I was doing it. Before I started the movie I was getting my kid’s Halloween costume and my son is really into Batman and we went to a costume store in Los Angeles and it was pretty empty and I was in the aisle and I hear this ‘Oi.’ I turned around, it’s Christian Bale who’s the sweetest guy ever and there he and I are standing in the Batman [aisle]. I said look man you’re the best, what do you think? [He said] ‘Make sure you could piss in that suit.’ Christian Bale was also buying his son the suit. He doesn’t just hang out [in the Batman aisle].”

[From People]

“He’s at the end of his rope, he’s a burn out…” Yep. What is it about directors instinctively knowing the truth of Ben Affleck’s character these days? First David Fincher and now Zack Snyder.

As for the trailer… God, it’s SO DARK. I mean, DC Comics insists on having the darkest, most morose superheroes ever. Everything has to be about Christ-figures and violent anarchy and NO ONE CAN EVER SMILE. I will say this – Ben as Bruce Wayne is actually fine. I believe Ben as Bruce Wayne. But no, I will never really be on board with The Batfleck. And do we really need to see Bruce Wayne’s parents get killed in yet another movie? Also: this is our first real glimpse of Holly Hunter’s senator (YAAYYYY Holly Hunter I love her), Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor with hair and Amy Adams playing Lois-with-great-hair again. We also get a glimpse of Gal Gadot as Diana Prince and Wonder Woman.

Well, That’s An Odd Choice For Lex Luthor…

Jesse+Eisenberg

Bryan Cranston will not be playing Lex Luthor, to the great disappointment of many. Though it was a rumor circulating, one that he personally denied, some people still clung to the hope. I did, and I’m not even a fan of Superman.

It turns out that the role of Lex Luthor is going to Jesse Eisenberg. This is an odd choice, right? I think it’s even weirder than the Ben Affleck as Batman casting. I’m not saying it’s a bad or wrong choice, just an odd one.

From Entertainment Weekly:

“Lex Luthor is often considered the most notorious of Superman’s rivals, his unsavory reputation preceding him since 1940? [Director Zack] Snyder said in a statement announcing the Eisenberg deal. “What’s great about Lex is that he exists beyond the confines of the stereotypical nefarious villain. He’s a complicated and sophisticated character whose intellect, wealth and prominence position him as one of the few mortals able to challenge the incredible might of Superman. Having Jesse in the role allows us to explore that interesting dynamic, and also take the character in some new and unexpected directions.”

I think for Lex Luthor we all picture someone old and menacing and, well, bald. So this comes as a weird choice for me. It will be very interesting to see what they do with it.

Shoulda gotten Tom Hanks though…let him have his chance!
