Selita Ebanks on modeling for VS: ‘It’s not natural to maintain that size’

Victoria’s Secret has been on a decline for several years and is in the process of trying to rebrand. Last year the New York Times ran an expose revealing the demeaning culture and widespread sexual harassment behind the scenes at the company. They’ve been rightfully called out for lack of body representation for years. In a new episode of E!’s True Hollywood Story, former VS angel, Selita Ebanks, recounts the unhealthy and unnatural standards pressed upon the models who walked the show. Selita also discusses how cutthroat it was behind the scenes. Many models she thought were friends turned against her when she was hired by Victoria’s Secret. A few highlights from E! Online:

“Modeling for Victoria’s Secret, there’s a code you have to follow,” Ebanks revealed in an exclusive sneak peek at the special. “There is expectation to maintain the size, and unfortunately, we are going against Mother Nature. It is not something that’s natural, it is not something that should happen. It’s tough.”

Psychotherapist Stacy Kaiser noted she heard that some models “back in the day” only ate an apple every 24 hours to maintain their trim physiques; such were just the beauty standards of the brand.

As Ebanks explained, the goal for every model was to become an Angel. “I’ve been on many runways, but, to be a part of the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, for me, was more than just a job. It was the highlight,” Ebanks recalled.

The New York Times reporter Jessica Silver-Greenberg, whose exposé “Angels in Hell” uncovered the dark underbelly of the Victoria’s Secret empire, added that in her opinion, Angels had low self-esteem.

“It’s really hard for a lot of the Victoria’s Secret models to have the kind of self-worth that the rest of us have, because it’s all about their appearance,” she stated. “No one wants to hear what they have to say.”

[From E! Online]

I agree with Jessica Silver-Greenberg when she said that the models suffer from low self-esteem. These women are beat down emotionally, constantly having their worth connected to how they look or how skinny they are. It made me sad when Selita said that she lost friends when she got the Victoria’s Secret contract.

I used to work for Victoria’s Secret at the store level and I saw what they put the managers through. I can only imagine what the models went through. The fact that those women were only eating an apple every twenty-four hours is insanity. I also agree with Selita that the demands on these women’s bodies is unnatural. Women should not be that thin unless it is natural to them. This E! True Hollywood story looks interesting. And since the Victoria’s Secret empire is literally declining right before our eyes despite their attempt of rebranding, it’ll be interesting to learn more.

Heidi Klum on the changes at Victoria’s Secret: it’s about time

avalon-0563488339

Last month we heard about Victoria Secret’s big rebrand. They assembled a group of impressive women who made up the new VS Collective. The Collective is going to, “create revolutionary product collections, compelling and inspiring content, new internal associate programs and rally support for causes vital to women.” Other than a Juneteenth post, I haven’t seen a huge shift in their IG page, but I think they’ve been slowly changing their image over the last year so maybe the rollout slowly began before the announcement. The point is, Victoria’s Secret is trying to change. And one of the original Angels, Heidi Klum, is happy to hear it. While saying she loved her time as a model for the brand, mostly because of the friendships she formed, Heidi said the company has needed to change for a while.

The OG Angel! Heidi Klum, who was a Victoria’s Secret Angel from 1999 to 2010, is speaking out about the lingerie company’s rebrand, VS Collective.

The relaunch, which was announced in June, claims to usher in a “new era” for the brand. It features “an ever-growing group of accomplished women who share a common passion to drive positive change,” including actress Priyanka Chopra and soccer star Megan Rapinoe.

“About time, is all I can say. About time,” the 48-year-old model said to The Sunday Project on July 11. “As a model, you go there, you are happy to have a job. When you are not the company, you do what you are told. But finally, looking at this now, I’m like, about time.”

Victoria’s Secret, which will also be launching The Victoria’s Secret Global Fund for Women’s Cancers to “fund innovative research projects aimed at progressing treatments and cures for women’s cancers,” previously canceled the official fashion show and the Angel title in 2019.

While Klum recognizes that the agency has been taking steps in the right direction, she also acknowledges that the speed at which they’re changing is on the slower side.

“Good. You know, because things do need to change. They have been changing. It’s been taking too long,” she said to the Australian outlet.

The star, who has passed her love for modeling onto daughter 17-year-old daughter Leni, also told Body Soul that she’s “excited that they’re [Victoria’s Secret] understanding there are so many different people out there who want beautiful things to wear.”

She’s thrilled to see the change, but she admits that she “always loved the brand” during her run as an Angel.

[From Us]

I’m with Heidi in that I am happy to see Victoria Secret’s evolve. I grew up with the catalogue supposedly being inspiration for what I wanted to look like. It was, don’t get me wrong, but I knew not to look at it on my bad days or I’d feel worse. I simply couldn’t hold myself to those standards. But I liked the product. I thought it was pretty and bought things for special occasions. There are a lot of companies out there doing it better now, however, so VS has to keep up with the times. As Kaiser pointed out in her write up, VS’s issues went so far below the surface, an image overhaul was their only hope at survival. It would be nice to see people who look like me, but it would also be nice to see some stuff that looks nice on people like me. Like, shake it up a bit for us non-model types, don’t just give us size zero lingerie in larger sizes.

As for Heidi, I think she means it. It’s hard to look at someone who could still model the old VS ideal on the runway and hear her as an advocate, but it’s always better to have a famous voice in our corner than not. I think watching her 17-year-old daughter entering the modeling fray might have Heidi scared. She knows how harsh the industry is and maybe she’d like Leni to be able to live a freer life than she did. And she’s not saying the company is irredeemable, Heidi’s glad they’re adopting change. So, there’s hope for Victoria and her Secret yet. Can’t wait until we see this big overhaul, though, because Heidi’s right about one thing, it’s a little, “on the slower side” for sure.

Megan Rapinoe Priyanka Chopra Victoria's Secret

Megan Rapinoe & Priyanka Chopra are part of Victoria’s Secret’s big rebrand

US President Joe Biden participates in an event to mark Equal Pay Day

Last year, the NY Times had a somewhat epic story about the fall of Victoria’s Secret. Everything was coming to a head for VS and for the company which owned the label, L Brand. L Brand is owned by Leslie “Les” Wexner, who had very close ties to Jeffrey Epstein, ties which still have not been examined thoroughly. But the Epstein connection to VS was just one part of the horror show – a culture of sexual harassment, sexism and objectification was pervasive at every level of the company for many years. The big-name models and celebrities attached to the brand were leaving in droves. So now, roughly sixteen months after that NYT piece, Victoria’s Secret announced that they have made a huge re-brand for their image. They still, improbably, own a large (but declining) share of the lingerie market. So instead of just throwing more thongs on size-0 models, VS has put together a line-up of new “real woman” brand ambassadors.

The Victoria’s Secret Angels, those avatars of Barbie bodies and playboy reverie, are gone. Their wings, fluttery confections of rhinestones and feathers that could weigh almost 30 pounds, are gathering dust in storage. The “Fantasy Bra,” dangling real diamonds and other gems, is no more.

In their place are seven women famous for their achievements and not their proportions. They include Megan Rapinoe, the 35-year-old pink-haired soccer star and gender equity campaigner; Eileen Gu, a 17-year-old Chinese American freestyle skier and soon-to-be Olympian; the 29-year-old biracial model and inclusivity advocate Paloma Elsesser, who was the rare size 14 woman on the cover of Vogue; and Priyanka Chopra Jonas, a 38-year-old Indian actor and tech investor.

They will be spearheading what may be the most extreme and unabashed attempt at a brand turnaround in recent memory: an effort to redefine the version of “sexy” that Victoria’s Secret represents (and sells) to the masses. For decades, Victoria’s Secret’s scantily clad supermodels with Jessica Rabbit curves epitomized a certain widely accepted stereotype of femininity. Now, with that kind of imagery out of step with the broader culture and Victoria’s Secret facing increased competition and internal turmoil, the company wants to become, its chief executive said, a leading global “advocate” for female empowerment.

Will women buy it? An upcoming spinoff, more than $5 billion in annual sales, and 32,000 jobs in a global retail network that includes roughly 1,400 stores are riding on the answer.

The seven women, who form a group called the VS Collective, will alternately advise the brand, appear in ads and promote Victoria’s Secret on Instagram. They are joining a company that has an entirely new executive team and is forming a board of directors in which all but one seat will be occupied by women.

Rarely has a company so dominant in its sector been exposed as trailing so far behind the culture as Victoria’s Secret was in the wake of the #MeToo movement. It was, Ms. Rapinoe said bluntly, “patriarchal, sexist, viewing not just what it meant to be sexy but what the clothes were trying to accomplish through a male lens and through what men desired. And it was very much marketed toward younger women.” That message, she said, was “really harmful.”

[From The NY Times]

People on social media are, like, mad about Rapinoe specifically. Dudes are mad because Rapinoe isn’t the VS model of their fantasies. Personally, I think there must have been huge changes at an executive and advertising level to even get Rapinoe in the room. She’s not going to “yes” if there’s only a superficial change in the label. She won’t lend her name or her authentic, personal brand to Victoria’s Secret if they’re just going to try to make her “sexy” to straight men. (Rapinoe is already sexy to everyone though, so joke’s on her.)

As for the rest of it… we’ll see. I mean, this change is better than no change at all. Maybe it will work out, maybe it won’t. I wonder if there will be big changes in the product though – less itchy lace, more support? Will they expand their bra sizes? Will they offer more shapewear? I do have to say this as well: Savage X Fenty and Skims has got ‘em shook. What Rihanna and Kim Kardashian have done with their entrances into the lingerie/shapewear/underwear market is really big.

Gigi Hadid Lost Weight Because of Thyroid Disease

gigi-hadid-weight-loss-7 - Gigi Hadid Lost Weight Because of Thyroid Disease

While the topic of Gigi Hadid weight loss is still hot, here’s a new twist – the model’s significant weight loss was not intentional, but caused by a thyroid disease.

On the fact that she never wanted to lose weight and her skinnier figure is the result of a thyroid disease:

“My metabolism actually changed like crazy this year. I have Hashimoto’s disease. It’s a thyroid disease, and it’s now been two years since taking the medication for it, so for the VS show I didn’t want to lose any more weight, I just want to have muscles in the right place, and if my butt can get a little perkier, then that’s good.”

… says Gigi.

After Gigi made the revelation about her illness, various media sources started to do a little research and pointed out that Hashimoto’s disease causes weight gain, not weight loss – in addition, others said that patients do not experience symptoms major once they get the right treatment, like Gigi has for the past 2 years.

Victoria’s Secret Model Jasmine Tookes Will Wear the Fantasy Bra This Year

fantasy-bra-3

25 year-old Victoria’s Secret beauty Jasmine Tookes will be the very happy wearer of the brand’s $3 million Fantasy Bra at their runway show in December.

Her thoughts on being selected to wear the Fantasy Bra:

I had no idea that I was going to be chosen to wear the Bright Night Fantasy Bra. It was such a surprise to me. I don’t know how they chose, but I am so honored to have this opportunity, and be able to walk down the runway with this beautiful thing.

I have known for five months, and I literally had to keep my mouth taped shut. I mean the only girls that knew were Taylor [Hill], Romee [Strijd], and Josephine Skriver because they were there the day of the surprise. I think it was the hardest for Taylor to keep her mouth shut because she is like a wild child.

… says Jasmine.

Check out her reaction at finding the news!
