Prince Harry admits he didn’t talk about his mother’s death until he was 28

It does feel like I’ve been ignoring Prince Harry, right? I didn’t mean to. It’s just that he’s so consistently awesome these days, and I feel like sometimes you guys might be tired of Honking For Harry. So, what has Harry been up to recently? He’s doing consistent events every week, but he’s not always getting attention and coverage for the events. Over the weekend, he hosted a barbecue for Heads Together, the mental health umbrella organization he started with William and Kate. William and Kate did not attend the BBQ, even though it went down at Kensington Palace. Harry spent a lot of time with mental health care providers and people struggling with mental health issues. Harry even spoke about how he wish he had started talking about his mother’s death much sooner. Prince Harry has revealed that he regrets ‘not talking’ about the death of his mother Princess Diana for much of his life. Speaking with former football star Rio Ferdinand, who lost his wife to cancer last year, Harry, 31, discussed bereavement at a Kensington Palace barbecue for mental health campaign group Heads Together. The young royal discussed the impact the Princess of Wales’ death in 1997, when Harry was 12, has had on him when asked by Ferdinand how he coped with the loss. The prince admitted that it was only three years ago that he began to open up about how he felt about losing his mother, saying he didn’t speak about Diana’s death ‘for the first 28 years of my life.’ He said he’d come to realise that talking was the key: ‘It is OK to suffer, but as long as you talk about it. It is not a weakness. Weakness is having a problem and not recognising it and not solving that problem. A lot of people think if you’ve got a job, if you’ve got financial security, if you’ve got a family, you’ve got a house, all that sort of stuff, everyone seems to think that is all you need and you are absolutely fine to deal with stuff.’ ‘It is very easy for someone to look at someone like Rio Ferdinand and say, “You get paid all the money in the world, you are a successful footballer, you have fast cars.” But at the end of the day his wife was snatched from him at an early stage of his life with her. So of course he is going to suffer, it doesn’t matter if he has an amazing job.’ The prince said the ‘key message’ is that ‘anyone can suffer from mental health problems, whether you’re a member of the Royal Family, whether you’re a soldier, whether you’re a sports star, whether you’re a team sport, individual sport, whether you’re a white van driver, whether you’re a mother, father, a child, it doesn’t really matter. What you’ve had to go through in your day, week, year, (the) experience you’ve had – whether it’s losing a parent, whether it’s depression, whether it’s anxiety, whatever it is – you are actually unbelievably similar to each other in the way you have to deal with it.’ [From The Daily Mail] I just love him. And notice that his message seems contrary to the often-bungled message from the Duchess of Cambridge, who often seems to indicate that mental health issues mostly occur when children don’t have two parents and a home. Harry’s message is universal. And I like how personal he is, talking about his mother and how he closed up and didn’t talk about her death for sixteen years. While talking (and talk therapy) doesn’t solve every mental health problem, it’s the first step and just talking about it and de-stigmatizing mental health issues is a great thing. It’s a shame that Will and Kate wanted to go sailing instead. Photos courtesy of WENN.

Joe Biden’s amazing DNC speech: Donald Trump is full of ‘malarkey’

Embed from Getty Images We’re going to do several posts from Day 3 of the DNC last night, because unlike the strange lull of Day 2, Day 3 was full of barn-burner speeches and it was amazing. First, Vice President Joe Biden came out and Ol’ Handsome Joe was in rare form. He was so great, in fact, that people were sort of wondering aloud if this election would have been a lot different if Biden had run this cycle. He said last year that he just couldn’t run again so soon after his son’s passing, and I respect his decision. But it was still bittersweet, because Biden lives to serve his country. Biden’s speech was sad, funny, optimistic and he threw in some old-fashioned “malarkey” just for good measure. He fit a lot into a speech that was less than 20 minutes long. He made a passionate endorsement of Hillary Clinton and a particularly pointed takedown of Donald Trump. Biden actually delivered one of the most cogent assessments of Trump too: “His cynicism is unbounded. His lack of empathy and compassion can be summed up in a phrase I suspect he’s most proud of having made famous: ‘You’re fired.’ I’m not joking; think about that… He is trying to tell us he cares about the middle class. Give me a break. That’s a bunch of malarkey!! I know I’m called middle-class Joe, and in Washington that’s not meant as a compliment. It means you’re not sophisticated. But I know why we’re strong. I know why we have held together. I know why we are united. It’s because we’ve always had a growing middle class. This guy doesn’t have a clue about the middle class — not a clue. He has no clue about what makes America great. Actually, he has no clue… No major-party nominee in the history of this nation has ever known less or has been less prepared to deal with our national security.” [From WaPo] On Morning Joe this morning, they talked about how Day 3 was “appeal to swing voters and disaffected Republicans” Day. Could be. After Biden spoke, Mike Bloomberg came out. Bloomberg used to be a Republican, then an Independent, and now I’m not even sure. He’s Independent-Dem. I usually think Bloomberg is a charisma vacuum, but I ended up enjoying the hell out of Bloomberg’s speech. It was a glance of how actual rich people view Donald Trump: they think he’s stupid, gauche and a terrible businessman. I don’t know who wrote this, but it was a surprisingly great speech. Apparently, Bloomberg ad-libbed the line “let’s elect a SANE, competent person…” That was a huge applause line. Embed from Getty Images Embed from Getty Images Photos courtesy of Getty.

Susan Sarandon is mad that Bernie-or-Bust folks didn’t get a bigger forum

Embed from Getty Images At this point, I really don’t know what to even say to the Bernie-or-Bust people other than what Sarah Silverman said: you’re being ridiculous. Bernie-or-Bust delegates and agitators have been causing problems at the DNC every night, whether it was heckling and booing Elizabeth Warren and Cory Booker on Day 1, or heckling Leon Panetta on Day 3. Bernie Sanders told his Bernie Bros to work to elect Hillary Clinton and they’re just not listening. Not only are they behaving in such rude and juvenile ways, they’re actually shocked when their behavior has consequences! The Democratic committee pulled a senator who was a Sanders-supporter from speaking at the convention, and now Susan Sarandon and other Bernie-or-Bust people are just so mad. Susan Sarandon and fellow actors gathered outside the Democratic National Convention Wednesday to protest the DNC’s alleged efforts to silence Bernie Sanders supporters. Sarandon, Danny Glover, Shailene Woodley and Rosario Dawson rallied to express their frustration after former Ohio Senator Nina Turner, a strong supporter of Sanders, was denied the chance to be one of his nominators at the last minute, according to the Chicago Tribune. Turner was reportedly dismissed from the convention during the first night after her refusal to endorse Hillary Clinton. She was scheduled to introduce the Vermont senator on Monday evening but was stopped from doing so. “There’s been a lot of difficulty in executing the will of Bernie Sanders’ people and surrogates, and this was just a topping for the whole thing because she was ready to go. And she was very, very disappointed,” Sarandon said. “This has not gone by lightly, and … we are upset.” Turner did make an appearance at the media tent to thank her supporters but did not take the stage. [From People] “The will of Bernie Sanders’ people and surrogates”… not the will of Bernie Sanders, mind you. Bernie Sanders has said in no uncertain terms that he’s supporting Hillary Clinton and that he hopes all of his supporters join him in supporting Hillary. It’s the Bernie-or-Bust people who can’t wrap their heads around it. And they can’t wrap their heads around the idea that the DNC might actually change the schedule and “punish” the Bernie-or-Bust people because of their juvenile behavior. Ted Cruz refused to endorse Donald Trump on Day 3 of the RNC: funny?

Embed from Getty Images It’s really cute the way Kimye and Taylor Swift thought they were bringing the drama this week when all of the real insanity has been going down at the Republican National Convention. By all accounts, this year’s RNC has been a complete mess. Few of the big names in the GOP have come to Cleveland, the message keeps getting hijacked because everything is in shambles and the ratings are terrible. And last night’s prime-time line-up was particularly unhinged. Marco Rubio didn’t even come to Cleveland – he just sent a video, which is just what you’d expect from the least-working member of the Senate. The night should have been all about Mike Pence accepting the nomination for vice president, but they made the mistake of putting alleged Zodiac Killer Ted Cruz on around 10 pm, and of course it ended badly. The problem was that Ted Cruz, Donald Trump’s biggest challenger, got a major speaking slot, and Cruz still refused to endorse Trump. Here’s the whole speech: And here’s Cruz refusing to endorse Trump, and everyone booing him. Donald Trump arrived at the end of Cruz’s speech, and on Morning Joe this morning, they compared it to Wrestlemania. Watch the #RNC audience boo @tedcruz for not endorsing @realDonaldTrumphttps://t.co/3VzLWtH0zG — Business Insider (@businessinsider) July 21, 2016 It got so bad that Ted Cruz’s wife had to be escorted out of the RNC by security because audience members and delegates started threatening her. Trump-puppet Chris Christie decried Cruz as “awful” and “selfish.” .@ChrisChristie tells @DanaBashCNN that he thought @tedcruz’s speech was “awful” and “selfish.” #RNCinCLE https://t.co/yVnWqI3y7Y — Abigail Crutchfield (@ACrutchfield14) July 21, 2016 But as many pointed out, this was not a surprise. Trump Org. knew that Cruz would not be endorsing Trump, as they had access to his speech hours beforehand. The press knew too. And Trump let it happen anyway, possibly for political theater reasons, possibly because everyone knows that the best way to turn people against Ted Cruz is to let people see Ted Cruz speak. Wow, Ted Cruz got booed off the stage, didn't honor the pledge! I saw his speech two hours early but let him speak anyway. No big deal! — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 21, 2016 So was this a power-move by Team Trump or Team Cruz? Or was this just another shambolic mess from the RNC? I don’t know. But sources now say that Cruz is definitely going to run again in 2020, even if Trump is president.
