Joe Biden’s amazing DNC speech: Donald Trump is full of ‘malarkey’

Embed from Getty Images We’re going to do several posts from Day 3 of the DNC last night, because unlike the strange lull of Day 2, Day 3 was full of barn-burner speeches and it was amazing. First, Vice President Joe Biden came out and Ol’ Handsome Joe was in rare form. He was so great, in fact, that people were sort of wondering aloud if this election would have been a lot different if Biden had run this cycle. He said last year that he just couldn’t run again so soon after his son’s passing, and I respect his decision. But it was still bittersweet, because Biden lives to serve his country. Biden’s speech was sad, funny, optimistic and he threw in some old-fashioned “malarkey” just for good measure. He fit a lot into a speech that was less than 20 minutes long. He made a passionate endorsement of Hillary Clinton and a particularly pointed takedown of Donald Trump. Biden actually delivered one of the most cogent assessments of Trump too: “His cynicism is unbounded. His lack of empathy and compassion can be summed up in a phrase I suspect he’s most proud of having made famous: ‘You’re fired.’ I’m not joking; think about that… He is trying to tell us he cares about the middle class. Give me a break. That’s a bunch of malarkey!! I know I’m called middle-class Joe, and in Washington that’s not meant as a compliment. It means you’re not sophisticated. But I know why we’re strong. I know why we have held together. I know why we are united. It’s because we’ve always had a growing middle class. This guy doesn’t have a clue about the middle class — not a clue. He has no clue about what makes America great. Actually, he has no clue… No major-party nominee in the history of this nation has ever known less or has been less prepared to deal with our national security.” [From WaPo] On Morning Joe this morning, they talked about how Day 3 was “appeal to swing voters and disaffected Republicans” Day. Could be. After Biden spoke, Mike Bloomberg came out. Bloomberg used to be a Republican, then an Independent, and now I’m not even sure. He’s Independent-Dem. I usually think Bloomberg is a charisma vacuum, but I ended up enjoying the hell out of Bloomberg’s speech. It was a glance of how actual rich people view Donald Trump: they think he’s stupid, gauche and a terrible businessman. I don’t know who wrote this, but it was a surprisingly great speech. Apparently, Bloomberg ad-libbed the line “let’s elect a SANE, competent person…” That was a huge applause line. Embed from Getty Images Embed from Getty Images Photos courtesy of Getty.

Kim Zolciak tells daughter, 19, to get lip injections ‘if it makes her happy’

Real Housewives of Atlanta’s Kim Zolciak-Biermann and her daughter, Brielle, 19, were spotted at LAX on Tuesday sporting over-inflated lips. Like mother, like daughter, right? The 38-year-old reality star was in Los Angeles to work on the launch of her new skincare line, Kashmere Kollection. While she was there, she paid a visit to her plastic surgeon, Dr. Garo Kassabian. Being the social media monster that she is, Kim documented the trip on Snapchat. Dr. Kassabian is quite the in-demand plastic surgeon in Beverly Hills. Kim could only get in to see him at 9 p.m. on Friday night. As she states numerous times in the video, it’s “only the best, baby” for her. The Daily Mail posted a video of Kim’s L.A. Snapchat adventure and it’s kind of refreshing to see that her videos are just as dull as those from someone not in the public eye. Kim didn’t reveal exactly what happened at the good doctor’s office, but she definitely emerged with noticeably larger lips. Of course, she’s no stranger to going under the knife, telling E! News back in May that she’s had some plastic surgery, including a tummy tuck and breast augmentation. She also thinks it’s okay to not be 100% natural, telling E!: “I will always nip and tuck if I feel the need to do so, but I’m open about it. I don’t care. You only go around one time, and I especially understand that. And life is very short, so there’s no reason for me to lie.” “If I chose a life of reality television, which is an open book, so I share with people what I’ve done. There’s no secrets. I want women to feel as beautiful as I feel, and so, with that said, it’s not all natural. My boobs aren’t natural. I had great boobs until I breastfed Brielle and then they just shriveled up to B raisins. They were horrible. So I must fix them.” LOL!” [From E! News] Kim’s 19-year-old daughter also got a lip tune-up while in L.A., visiting cosmetic dermatologist Simon Ourian. Mama Kim is completely on board with this, telling US Magazine, “She bothered me for five years about her lips. She was like, ‘I hate my lips, I hate my lips.’ So I’m like, then go fix them! You only go around this planet once. If it makes her happy, so be it.” Brielle’s lips are the star of many an Instagram selfie. After she got her first round of injections back in November, she posted her full pout with the caption, “My lips are my biggest insecurity and I’m so happy w my results now!” I thought she looked better before she started getting the injections, but that’s just me. thank you thank you thank you!!! to my favorite, @simonourianmd1 !!! my lips are my biggest insecurity and I'm so happy w my results now! ☺️ you truly are the best! even though I hate needles you made this very easy! thank you again #simonourian #epione A video posted by brielle biermann (@briellebiermann) on Nov 25, 2015 at 11:43am PST At least Brielle has lips that can enhance her duck face selfies and shameless promotional posts for sunglasses and teeth whitening kits. The struggle is real, people. I don’t know about you, but I can’t stand these crazy, puffy fish lips. That’s why God created lip liner. It’s easy to overdraw your lips a little and it’s way cheaper and far less painful. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for a little nip and tuck, and if I hadn’t been so chicken in my 20s, I would have gotten a boob job, but I just can’t with these lips. Pres. Obama makes a full-throated endorsement for Hillary Clinton at the DNC

Embed from Getty Images President Barack Obama is probably the most popular politician in America right now. I don’t even think the residual love for Bill Clinton comes close. Obama’s last year in office has been bittersweet, of course, and we would be in such a different place if only Obama was running for a third term. That’s what I was thinking about last night… I wish this race was Obama vs. Trump. Because Obama would slay. On Day 3 of the DNC, the party brought out their heavy-hitters. It was a really great three-hour block of television, actually. First Biden, then Bloomberg, then Tim Kaine, then Obama. I’m not going to say that Obama gave his best speech ever, but this speech was easily in the Top Five. It was partly a farewell speech (SOB), partly a full-throated endorsement of Hillary Clinton and partly a takedown of Donald Trump. Obama balanced those three subjects brilliantly and, again, kudos to the speechwriters last night. I was genuinely surprised when Hillary Clinton came out at the end too. The biggest moment was when Obama said Hillary Clinton was the most qualified person to ever run for president: “You know, nothing truly prepares you for the demands of the oval office. You can read about it, you can study it, but until you’ve sat at that desk, you don’t know what it’s like to manage a global crisis or send young people to war. But Hillary’s been in the room. She’s been part of those decisions. She knows what’s at stake in the decisions our government makes, what’s at stake for the working family for the senior citizen or the small business owner, for the soldier, for the veteran. And even in the midst of crisis, she listens to people and she keeps her cool and she treats everybody with respect. And no matter how daunting the odds, no matter how much people try to knock her down, she never, ever quits. That is the Hillary I know. That’s the Hillary I’ve come to admire, and that’s why I can say with confidence there has never been a man or a woman, not me, not Bill Clinton, nobody, more qualified than Hillary Clinton to serve as president of the United States… I hope you don’t mind, Bill, but I was just telling the truth, man.” [Via E! News] Because the Republican National Convention last week was so ceaselessly negative and pessimistic, the Democrats were able to take over the optimism franchise. Obama’s speech last night is being called Reagan-esque, because not only did he name-check Reagan, but he honestly borrowed the shiny-eyed Reagan-esque optimism of American pride. Now, all that being said… I still think Michelle Obama’s speech on Day 1 was probably the best speech of the convention! Take about five paragraphs out of that Obama speech and it could have been a Reagan speech. Trust me. I know. — John Podhoretz (@jpodhoretz) July 28, 2016 Embed from Getty Images Photos courtesy of Getty.

Kim Kardashian & Kanye West cover Harper’s Bazaar’s September issue

Ah, it’s that time of year when we get to see the September Issue covers. It seems like they start coming in earlier and earlier. Harper’s Bazaar devoted their September issue to Kim Kardashian and Kanye West. The photoshoot is decent – there are a few random shots, but I love the close-up of Kim and Kanye’s faces. You can see the full editorial and interview here. Surprisingly, I enjoyed the interview. Kanye often comes across as eccentric and mercurial (if not flat-out crazy) in interviews, but doing a joint interview with Kim grounds him. And while neither of them is going to win a genius grant any time soon, I enjoyed this piece and I think people often miss the fact that Kanye has a very dark, sardonic sense of humor. Some highlights: Kim and Kanye on each other’s favorite body parts: KW: Is the face a body part? My favorite body part of Kim’s: heart. KKW: Awww, now I have to say the same. But of my own, I like my upper stomach. I just seem to always have abs. When I’m not really pregnant, I have a great two-pack. And of Kanye’s? I have to say his heart. And I’ve always loved his legs. Favorite Taylor Swift song? KW: For me? I don’t have one. KKW: I was such a fan of hers. Historical figure you identify with? KKW: This one is hard. KW: Us? Muhammad Ali, Marilyn Monroe—all day. Next question. Favorite selfie pose? KKW: I love a selfie in the mirror. KW: I love her nude selfies. Like, I love the ones from the side, the back ones, and the front. I just love seeing her naked; I love nudity. And I love beautiful shapes. I feel like it’s almost a Renaissance thing, a painting, a modern version of a painting. I think it’s important for Kim to have her figure. To not show it would be like Adele not singing. Who’s more vain? KKW: I mean, me. KW: Yeah, I think she has vanity. And with me, I don’t give a f–k, bro; it is what it is. I’m the best—now what? I don’t know if that’s a vain statement. I don’t particularly like photos of myself, though. What makes you both laugh? KKW: Kanye just says the funniest analogies that are so random. I should start keeping a book—in 20 years, I’ll have a big book of analogies. They always make me laugh. KW: Kim’s just a funny person in general. KKW: But I don’t get credit for being funny; it’s, like, not a thing. KW: I think my sense of humor is really dark and super twisted and stuff like that. It’s like, “Is this a funny joke for real? Or am I just rich?” See? That was funny. How would you like to be remembered? KKW: I’d like to be remembered as someone who was smart in business, works hard, and can be sexy and a mom. A powerful but still sexy, nonconforming woman. And I would hope that Kanye would be remembered for being smart and sticking to what he believes. KW: Determined. I would say my determination is way higher than my smartness. KKW: A lot of people have strong beliefs, but they don’t have the confidence to really stick to them. I really respect Kanye for that. Kanye isn’t an overthinker: “The one thing I don’t have an insecurity about is public perception. I’m not going to conform to it, you know? Here’s something that’s contrary to popular belief: I actually don’t like thinking. I think people think I like to think a lot. And I don’t. I do not like to think at all…. I think about things to put them in a place where I don’t have to think about them anymore. Say if I had a child with a really bad mom, I would have to think more than if I had a child with a good mom. I’m just doing my homework early. I told my trainer today, I’m a mix of a 14-year-old high schooler and a 60-year-old guy. It can never fall into the 30s or the 40s. It has to be 100 percent 60 or 100 percent 14, no in between.” [From Harper’s Bazaar] I do think this is funny: “Is this a funny joke for real? Or am I just rich?” Kanye and Kim also openly talk about his debt and how it felt good for him to talk about it openly, but it sounds like he doesn’t have debt issues anymore, probably because his collaboration with Adidas is going really well. What else? I don’t know, I just think they’re funny and they complement each other really well. There were several really sweet moments between them, like Kim saying that she lies to people all the time about how much Kanye loves to sleep, because he’s like a cat, apparently, and he falls asleep anywhere and everywhere. Ha! Anyway, start the flame war. I like Kimye. Photos courtesy of Harper’s Bazaar.

Susan Sarandon is mad that Bernie-or-Bust folks didn’t get a bigger forum

Embed from Getty Images At this point, I really don’t know what to even say to the Bernie-or-Bust people other than what Sarah Silverman said: you’re being ridiculous. Bernie-or-Bust delegates and agitators have been causing problems at the DNC every night, whether it was heckling and booing Elizabeth Warren and Cory Booker on Day 1, or heckling Leon Panetta on Day 3. Bernie Sanders told his Bernie Bros to work to elect Hillary Clinton and they’re just not listening. Not only are they behaving in such rude and juvenile ways, they’re actually shocked when their behavior has consequences! The Democratic committee pulled a senator who was a Sanders-supporter from speaking at the convention, and now Susan Sarandon and other Bernie-or-Bust people are just so mad. Susan Sarandon and fellow actors gathered outside the Democratic National Convention Wednesday to protest the DNC’s alleged efforts to silence Bernie Sanders supporters. Sarandon, Danny Glover, Shailene Woodley and Rosario Dawson rallied to express their frustration after former Ohio Senator Nina Turner, a strong supporter of Sanders, was denied the chance to be one of his nominators at the last minute, according to the Chicago Tribune. Turner was reportedly dismissed from the convention during the first night after her refusal to endorse Hillary Clinton. She was scheduled to introduce the Vermont senator on Monday evening but was stopped from doing so. “There’s been a lot of difficulty in executing the will of Bernie Sanders’ people and surrogates, and this was just a topping for the whole thing because she was ready to go. And she was very, very disappointed,” Sarandon said. “This has not gone by lightly, and … we are upset.” Turner did make an appearance at the media tent to thank her supporters but did not take the stage. [From People] “The will of Bernie Sanders’ people and surrogates”… not the will of Bernie Sanders, mind you. Bernie Sanders has said in no uncertain terms that he’s supporting Hillary Clinton and that he hopes all of his supporters join him in supporting Hillary. It’s the Bernie-or-Bust people who can’t wrap their heads around it. And they can’t wrap their heads around the idea that the DNC might actually change the schedule and “punish” the Bernie-or-Bust people because of their juvenile behavior. Ted Cruz refused to endorse Donald Trump on Day 3 of the RNC: funny?

Embed from Getty Images It’s really cute the way Kimye and Taylor Swift thought they were bringing the drama this week when all of the real insanity has been going down at the Republican National Convention. By all accounts, this year’s RNC has been a complete mess. Few of the big names in the GOP have come to Cleveland, the message keeps getting hijacked because everything is in shambles and the ratings are terrible. And last night’s prime-time line-up was particularly unhinged. Marco Rubio didn’t even come to Cleveland – he just sent a video, which is just what you’d expect from the least-working member of the Senate. The night should have been all about Mike Pence accepting the nomination for vice president, but they made the mistake of putting alleged Zodiac Killer Ted Cruz on around 10 pm, and of course it ended badly. The problem was that Ted Cruz, Donald Trump’s biggest challenger, got a major speaking slot, and Cruz still refused to endorse Trump. Here’s the whole speech: And here’s Cruz refusing to endorse Trump, and everyone booing him. Donald Trump arrived at the end of Cruz’s speech, and on Morning Joe this morning, they compared it to Wrestlemania. Watch the #RNC audience boo @tedcruz for not endorsing @realDonaldTrumphttps://t.co/3VzLWtH0zG — Business Insider (@businessinsider) July 21, 2016 It got so bad that Ted Cruz’s wife had to be escorted out of the RNC by security because audience members and delegates started threatening her. Trump-puppet Chris Christie decried Cruz as “awful” and “selfish.” .@ChrisChristie tells @DanaBashCNN that he thought @tedcruz’s speech was “awful” and “selfish.” #RNCinCLE https://t.co/yVnWqI3y7Y — Abigail Crutchfield (@ACrutchfield14) July 21, 2016 But as many pointed out, this was not a surprise. Trump Org. knew that Cruz would not be endorsing Trump, as they had access to his speech hours beforehand. The press knew too. And Trump let it happen anyway, possibly for political theater reasons, possibly because everyone knows that the best way to turn people against Ted Cruz is to let people see Ted Cruz speak. Wow, Ted Cruz got booed off the stage, didn't honor the pledge! I saw his speech two hours early but let him speak anyway. No big deal! — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 21, 2016 So was this a power-move by Team Trump or Team Cruz? Or was this just another shambolic mess from the RNC? I don’t know. But sources now say that Cruz is definitely going to run again in 2020, even if Trump is president. Melania Trump’s speechwriter falls on her sword for plagiarized RNC speech

Early Tuesday morning, some Trump campaign staffer had a full-fledged meltdown on MSNBC and threw a hissy fit about how Melania Trump’s plagiarized RNC speech was barely a one-day story. Not so much. Like so many scandals these days, the scandal absolutely could have been minimized into a one-day story if someone had simply stepped up in the first hours and said, “You know what, this was a bad move. We apologize, our bad.” It became a week-long story because the Trump campaign and other Republicans (Trump surrogates, mostly) couldn’t get their f—king stories straight. No one could come up with a plausible lie or, failing that, no one could properly sort out the blame for the plagiarism. I hope people are watching, because THIS is how Trump handles a minor crisis. Imagine how he would handle an actual crisis. Anyway, we now know who was responsible for the plagiarized text in Melania’s RNC speech. The first reports came out in the NYT on Wednesday morning, and by Wednesday afternoon, the story was confirmed: THE BALLERINA DID IT. I’m not joking. At first, Melania’s RNC speech was written by two long-time Republican speechwriters, Matthew Scully and John McConnell. It seems that Melania didn’t like the speech they wrote, so she approached one of her husband’s ghostwriters, a former ballerina-turned-ghostwriter named Meredith McIver. McIver largely discarded the first draft and she worked with Melania to make a more tailored speech. McIver came forward with a personal written statement distributed by the Trump campaign: My name is Meredith McIver and I’m an in-house staff writer at the Trump Organization. I am also a longtime friend and admirer of the Trump family. In working with Melania on her recent first lady speech, we discussed many people who inspired her and messages she wanted to share with the American people. A person she has always liked is Michelle Obama. Over the phone, she read me some passages from Mrs. Obama’s speech as examples. I wrote them down and later included some of the phrasing in the draft that ultimately became the final speech. I did not check Mrs. Obama’s speeches. This was my mistake and I feel terrible for the chaos I have caused Melania and the Trumps as well as to Mrs. Obama. No harm was meant.” Yesterday, I offered my resignation to Mr. Trump and the Trump family but they rejected it. Mr. Trump told me that people make innocent mistakes and we learn and grow from these experiences.” I asked to put out the statement because I did not like seeing the way this was distracting from Mr. Trump’s historic campaign for president and Melania’s beautiful message and presentation. I apologize for the confusion and hysteria my mistake has caused. Today, more than ever, I am honored to work for such a great family.” [Via The NYT] Once again, it sort of feels like the campaign is throwing Melania under the bus. The Trump Org. just distributed a statement saying that Melania was the one studying Michelle Obama’s speeches and telling her speechwriter which passages she wanted to copy! I can see how this is an honest mistake between Melania and Meredith, but there’s a larger problem: that no one in Trump’s campaign looked at Melania’s speech before she gave it, and no one thought to double-check it. Disorganized. Chaotic. Shambolic. Unprofessional. These are just some of the words that come to mind when thinking about this Republic National Convention. Photos courtesy of WENN.
