Octavia Spencer offers poop pies from ‘The Help’ to all DOGE employees

President Musk and Sideshow Don have enacted the most eventful first month of a term, in all the worst ways possible. Thankfully, the American people are finding a myriad of ways to fight back. Some are suing. Some are publicly selling off their Teslas. And of course, some are dancing. Octavia Spencer is getting ready to bake. (Fair warning: from here on out you may want to ensure you’re at least one hour away from beginning or having finished a meal.) In 2012, Octavia won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her scene-stealing performance as Minny Jackson in The Help. In arguably the most volatile depiction of dessert-as-revenge ever put on screen, Octavia’s character, a maid, bakes a pie for her racist former employer, with a special secret ingredient… poop. Well, 13 years later and Octavia recognizes a new cast of villains who deserve the pie treatment: all DOGE employees. She announced the impromptu bake sale Tuesday on Instagram. D’ya hear that, Nazi Youths? Free food!

“Bake sale for Washington to ALL DOGE employees and supporters,” she wrote. “I need good vanilla from MEXICO and some CANADIAN maple syrup. #limitedEdition pies: Corn and chocolate. Need lots of donations for the ‘special ingredient.’”

“Eat looooooooots of corn,” Spencer continued. “one time sale.”

The actor, who won an Oscar for her performance in the film, thus confirmed being among those who are outraged at Musk, whose government advisory group has been dismantling federal agencies in a purported effort to slash public spending and root out corruption.

DOGE is reportedly also seeking access to sensitive taxpayer information under the tech mogul’s dubious watch, while President Donald Trump is eyeing steep import tariffs on Mexico and Canada — all of which Spencer seemed to protest in Monday’s caption.

The post has already garnered 70,000 likes and supportive comments from fellow actors, including Taraji P. Henson, “Help” co-star Viola Davis and “Little House on the Prairie” actor Melissa Gilbert — who recently had her own tiff with a well-known Republican figure.

“Lmaooooooooooo. Make sure not to forget THEE most expensive ingredient,” wrote Henson before leaving several poop emojis, while Davis contributed laughing emojis and one heart after commenting “Waaaaaahhhh!!!!!! Lol!!!! PERFECT!!!!”

“The Help” was based on a 2009 book of the same name by Kathryn Stockett. Set against the backdrop of the Civil Rights Movement in Jackson, Mississippi, the period piece centers on African American maids who’ve spent their entire lives working for white families.

Spencer’s character delivers the pie to her former boss after being unjustly fired, making her post all the more apt in targeting an administration responsible for mass layoffs. On Monday, Trump began firing hundreds of Federal Aviation Administration employees.

The president has also moved to eradicate federal diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives and make Musk a “special government employee” — who has since hired numerous 20-something DOGE staffers — after the tech billionaire spent $250 million to help reelect him.

“So many pies to send,” wrote actor Reno Wilson in the comments of Spencer’s post.

[From HuffPost]

So many pies, indeed! We’re gonna need a bigger oven. Now I’m actually hoping that bigoted kid who resigned did get his job back, cause he’s sure earned himself a slice of sh-t pie. Well done, Octavia. She was the only one who could play this particular card, and she served it up with aplomb. What really upped the decadence factor, in my opinion, was the effortless way she folded in the Mexican vanilla and Canadian maple syrup barbs. (If only those countries had an irreplaceable ingredient needed to make Diet Coke, then Trump would drop all the tariff nonsense faster than you can say “aspartame.”) A big pastry chef’s kiss to Octavia. I hope her #MinnyJacksonCallToAction tag takes off! And this isn’t a one off, half-baked idea from Octavia, either. Her Instagram is chock full of calls to action and valuable info on what Democrats and Republicans are doing for and against us each day. Plus a necessary helping of humor posts sprinkled in as well. My favorite? One that reads, “I just turned off the news and put on a serial killer documentary to relax.” But enough venting; time to start preheating.

Octavia Spencer has a ghost in her house that scares away bad people

avalon-0563656677

Octavia Spencer was on Ellen DeGeneres’ show seemingly to promote her film Encounter, but she also admitted that she likes to show up during Ellen’s Giveaway Days. Octavia is a fellow early decorator like Casey Wilson. She has an artificial tree that she buys the tree scent for too. And because every holiday needs some ghosts inserted into them, Octavia talked about hers. In fairness, Ellen is the one who asked. And I’m glad she did because I had no idea Octavia had a ghost in her home. Apparently, she has the ghost of a former Westerner star who owned the home before her who drives off the cruddy people. But they have an understanding. They have “boundaries” to maintain an amicable living situation.

Octavia Spencer is revealing the unexpected guest she shares her house with: the ghost of a Western film star.

Spencer, 51, opened up about her supernatural roommate during a Friday appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. In a sneak peek for her episode, The Hidden Figures star told host Ellen DeGeneres that her home is haunted, but she welcomes the spirit’s presence.

“I need to know about your house being haunted, because I really love stories like this,” DeGeneres, 63, told Spencer, admitting to her guest that she truly believes in ghosts.

“I do too,” Spencer replied, before explaining, “I grew up watching Westerns, and I bought this house, and it was owned by a guy who did Westerns, so I must have been a fan of his.”

“I love him, because he kind of sorts out the bad people that shouldn’t be there,” Spencer explained. “He runs them out.”

“If they stay at my place, they don’t wanna come back. And that’s how I know that they don’t belong here,” she continued. “If you’re a person that belongs there, everybody is like, ‘Oh, your place is so welcoming. It’s so great.’ And that’s how I feel about it.”

When DeGeneres asked if she’s experienced any spooky moments at home, like doors closing on their own, Spencer said, “Well, when I leave for a long time he’s a little shady.”

“The doors close, the lights go off when I turn them on,” she said. “The only problem — I love my ghost, I just don’t want you bringing your ghost to my house. I don’t want anybody’s ghost thinking they can be friends with my ghost.”

Spencer added, “My ghost can haunt me, but he doesn’t haunt me. We have boundaries.”

[From Yahoo News]

I love every part of this story, but my favorite is the ghost getting his nose out of joint when she goes away for a while. That’s so Hollywood– pay attention to meee! I think it’s true, like the show Ghosts* suggests, once a human pays attention to a spirit, they don’t want to be ignored. It must be boring spending all that time unnoticed. But it’s paying off for Octavia because Dusty McGhost is filtering out the riffraff for her. I don’t know the ghost rules. A lot of people say they are bound by where they died. But I purchased a pair of pants for my son’s Halloween costume and in it was a linen handkerchief. It was soiled, which I know is gross and we washed it, but I think the owner was still connected to it. We included it in our Samhain ritual and invited its owner to come live with us. I swear to God I’ve smelled aftershave in various parts of the house since. Plus, he has a lot to say with our record player. He loves Jazz but not some of our 80s artists. Strangely, he enjoys Panic at the Disco. And a hand towel that was very much on the floor when I left a bathroom was on the counter when I turned around. I have a stocking for him but I’m not sure what you get a ghost for Christmas.

Hopefully Octavia’s ghost will like her take on A Christmas Carol with Ryan Reynolds and Will Ferrell. They star in a musical called Spirited on Apple . Unfortunately, it won’t be out until next year. However, Octavia also produced an important documentary called Right to Try about trying to find a cure for HIV, although it also speaks to the larger problems with Big Pharma in general. That’s currently streaming on Peacock. No wonder Dusty McGhost is looking out for Octavia, she’s worth protecting.

*the CBS version of Ghosts has gotten better. The D&D episode was great. But the original BBC version is really good, if you haven’t seen it.

Apologies Britney Spears Octavia Spencer

Octavia Spencer apologized to Britney privately for telling her to get a prenup

Octavia_S

Last weekend, Britney Spears got engaged to Sam Asghari. So many people were genuinely happy for her, and social media exploded with felicitations and well-wishes. As Kaiser reported, on Britney’s post, Octavia Spencer left a comment that stood out, “Make him sign a prenup.” I thought it was a riot. It was such a timely and referential joke with the conservatorship and Britney taking back control of her life. When I read Sam’s tongue-in-cheek response about there being a prenup to protect his “jeep and shoe collection,” I figured the couple got the joke and we were all enjoying the moment together. As usual, I was wrong. There must have been some form of backlash towards Octavia. She issued an apology both privately and publicly to the couple. Octavia posted a beautiful photo of Britney and Sam to her IG and a caption letting everyone know she’d never intended to do anything other than make them laugh. This was her full caption:

Y’all, a few days ago Sam and Britney announced their engagement and me being me I made a joke. My intention was to make them laugh not cause pain. I’ve reached out to this lovely couple privately to apologize and now want to restore just a smidge of happiness they were robbed of. Britney’s fans have seen her through a lot of pain and she’s found happiness. We’re thrilled for her. So let’s show them love. 👇🏽 #nonegativity

[From Octavia Spencer’s Instagram via Hollywood Life]

It’s possible Octavia simply had her own second thoughts about the joke. I think I remember a few comments here that speculated Britney’s social media break was because of the prenup talk. Maybe Octavia saw the comments from fans and wanted to make sure Britney knew it was a joke. I don’t think this was motivated from Britney’s team. In addition to Sam’s joke at the time, he responded to Octavia’s apology with, “You are very kind to clarify but i have no hard feelings whatsoever. Jokes and misconceptions come with the territory.” If Octavia felt she needed to do this, then I’m glad she did. I’m constantly making jokes that land wrong and I feel horrible. I think my twitter deletes are longer than my actual tweets. I felt really bad for both women when Octavia wrote “and now want to restore just a smidge of happiness they were robbed.” I would be crushed if I thought/knew I’d robbed Britney of any happiness in this moment.

The important part is someone felt the joke crossed a line and Octavia made her apologies. She made them quickly, not years from now when they were dug up. She made it when she felt her words had done damage, even if unintentional. She also did not blame someone else for her miscalculation. And, she actually did apologize, not just suggest she was going to do it someday like some other celebrities. I’m happy that Britney is engaged and living her life. I’m happy that Octavia made the amends she felt she needs to make. And I’m happy that Sam’s shoe collection will be protected with a prenup.

The 2015 Oscars will probably be the least diverse in 20 years: is this a big deal?

TIG poster

Now that autumn has arrived, the Oscar season is officially ramping up. We’ve already seen contenders at Sundance, Cannes, Telluride, Venice, Deauville and Toronto, plus we’ve got the New York and London Film Festivals yet to come in the next two months. So, Oscar races are shaping up and most critics already have their short-lists for who will probably get nominated for all of the big awards. There’s some good news and some bad news. The good news? Worthy, talented and consistently underrated actors will probably be big contenders. People like Julianne Moore, Amy Adams, Benedict Cumberbatch, Eddie Redmayne, JK Simmons, Keira Knightley and Patricia Arquette are some of the wonderful early contenders.

The bad news? Well, look at that list. It’s pretty white. Vulture posted a story yesterday headlined: “Will This Be the Whitest Oscars in Almost 2 Decades?” They were analyzing predictions compiled by the Gold Derby – go here to see the data. In every acting category, the potential nominees are profoundly white. The only exception I see is that some people think the film Selma – starring David Oyelowo as Martin Luther King Jr. and produced by Brad Pitt – might get some heat. One other potential contender: Japanese singer/actor Miyavi, playing a villain in Angelina Jolie’s Unbroken. But that’s about it. A lot of critics thought Chadwick Boseman was amazing in Get On Up, but most doubt the performance will earn him an Oscar nomination.

So, does it matter? Of course it matters. Just weeks after Lupita Nyong’o won an Oscar for her first major film role, anonymous film producers were musing about whether her skin was too dark and whether anyone would buy her as a leading lady. And, as Vulture points out, most of the racially diverse Oscar nominees of the past few years are now doing television – think about Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer, Demian Bichir, Chiwetel Ejiofor, etc. There’s less drama about race in TV these days, and it’s easier for minority actors to get a safe, consistent and even professionally challenging gig in TV rather than hustle to play some racist trope in a Hollywood film.

I’m not planting a flag for tokenism, by the way. I’m not saying that every year, a certain number of minority actors needs to be nominated just because. I’m saying that Hollywood’s diversity problem is ridiculous and it will be a shame if only white actors are nominated this year. I mean, Channing Tatum is probably going to be nominated this year!! That’s what we’ve come to. Then again, Channing is a Potato-American. Diversity!

Solange and Jay Z Fight In Elevator As Beyonce Looks On

Beyonce Solange elevator

Beyonce posted this photo with Solange, Luptia Nyong’o and Sarah Paulson at the MET Gala, which is the night the alleged fight took place. (instagram.com/beyonce)

-The Jay Z/Solange elevator fight video is burning up the interwebs right now. If you haven’t watched TMZ’s extended version, it’s worth it. Clearly, the security guard pressed the emergency stop button until he could get things under control (either that, or they’re on the longest elevator ride ever.) The prevailing theory is that Solange was either super drunk the night of the MET Gala (though the way she got her shit together as soon as she exited the elevator makes me wonder), or that she was defending Beyonce over something Jay did (which lends credence to some blind items and rumours). The most surprising thing is how Bey appears super stoic during the whole thing — and then turns on the smiles for the paparazzi immediately after. For someone who’s always controlled her image so fiercely, today must suck for her.

-Whatever happened, Solange reportedly deleted all of her pics of Beyonce from her Instagram.

-Speaking of blind items, Jennifer Esposito nearly confirmed some rumours about Bradley Cooper.

George Clooney and Amal Alamuddin had a star-studded engagement party in Malibu that included a serenade by Bono. So basically, they continue to win at life.

-Meanwhile, Stacy Keibler wants to remind you that she’s alive with a “hey! hey! look over here!” post.

-There’s lots of news coming out of the network upfronts this week. NBC confirmed that they’re bringing back Parenthood and Parks and Rec for shortened, final seasons. They also released trailers for some of their new shows. Marry Me (which feels like a sequel to Happy Endings) and Constantine may have promise. Katherine Heigl‘s State of Affairs looks predictably awful.

-Fox also announced some big moves, including pairing Gotham with Sleepy Hollow, reducing Glee’s final season, and promising that Graceland will have a different ending than Broadchurch.

-Speaking of Broadchurch, David Tennant might be the first guy to jump from an original series to the American remake and back.

Jane Krakowski is getting back in bed with Tina Fey.

Dan Harmon currently feels “eh” on whether Community should come back somewhere else. Netflix has already bowed out.

Scarlett Johansson and her fiancé attended an English wedding — and she didn’t bother to wear a fascinator. #missedopportunity.

Eminem‘s Mother’s Day message to his estranged mom was all kinds of sweet.

-I like this article about all the politics involved with appearing on the Cannes red carpet.

Jon Hamm hammed it up while taking selfies with his Don Draper wax figure.

Jennifer Lawrence almost fell down (again!) while walking the red carpet in a truly terrible dress. (Seriously, is that thing velvet?!)

-Meanwhile, Jennifer says boyfriend Nicholas Hoult is a great roommate.

-Whatever you do, don’t put Anna Wintour and Tim Gunn in a room together.

-Breathe easy, everyone. Chris Brown was sentenced to another 131 days in jail.

-How are they still adding cast members to the 50 Shades movie, which is well into production? Aaron Taylor-Johnson just joined the cast, which seems like a terrible career move.

Justin Timberlake appeared on last night’s episode of Oprah’s Master Class, where he dropped such bon mots as “When you look at me, you should understand that I am America.”

-Speaking of douche-tastic sound bites, Shia LaBeouf said: “At this point, I have enough money to live 25 lifetimes,” before telling a totally made up story about Jaden Smith. Go home, Shia. You’re drunk.

-THR has started posting Emmy roundtables. First up: showrunners Matthew Weiner, Vince Gilligan and Aaron Sorkin.

-Nice get: Octavia Spencer is joining the cast of Insurgent, the  sequel to Divergent.

Sherri Shepherd and her estranged husband are expecting a baby via surrogate … and he wants the kid.

-I’m guessing Beyonce was wishing we were still all talking about her weekend photo bomb right now.

Lea Michele posted a heartbreaking pic of Cory Monteith in honour of his birthday.

-I kind of wish Melissa McCarthy could break free from these types of roles, especially since her hubby wrote this movie.
