Lupita Nyong’o: “The European sense of beauty affects us all”

vocvcvn03370_noupc

On the European standard of beauty and the way people perceive black women:

“The European sense of beauty affects us all. I came home from college in the early two-thousands and saw ads on TV with a girl who can’t get a job. She uses this product. She gets her skin lighter. She gets the job. The lording of lighter skin is a common thing growing up in Nairobi. Being called ‘black mamba.’ The slow burn of recognizing something else is better than you. Alek Wek changed how dark people saw themselves. That I could do the same in a way for somebody somewhere is amazing. There is no point in getting your picture taken if it doesn’t move somebody. Right?”

… says Lupita.

Star: Jennifer Lawrence feels ‘threatened’ by Brie Larson’s awards success

FFN_KM_GoldenGlobes_PR_011016_51943839

There’s a long history with tabloids setting up Jennifer Lawrence to be some kind of massive Mean Girl, looking to take down her actress contemporaries with a single Doritos fart. Maybe I’m a J-Law Apologist, but I don’t think she’s that girl. Is she totally capable of being mean, judgy and rude? Of course she is. But I don’t think she operates like everything is zero-sum gain, like she can be the only successful woman in Hollywood because there can only be ONE. I think back to when J-Law was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for American Hustle, and she was up against Lupita Nyong’o. Just my opinion, but it always seemed like Jennifer actively did NOT want to win that year, and she really wanted Lupita to have her moment to shine.

That’s what I was thinking about when I read this Star Magazine story about how J-Law is Mean Girling Brie Larson. Brie and Jennifer are both nominated for Best Actress this year, and most people believe Brie is the major frontrunner for the award. Again, I suspect that J-Law is fine with that. And to hear Brie tell it, they know each other and they’re friendly. Brie said as much in her recent THR profile, saying: “I met Jen seven years ago at a photo shoot. We bonded over the craft service table; we were the only ones eating the doughnuts.” Still, Star’s source says J-Law is trying to quietly destroy Brie!

Jennifer Lawrence isn’t happy about having to share the It Girl limelight with critical darling Brie Larson.

“Jen’s starting to feel the heat,” says a source close to Brie. “She’s made it clear to friends that she does not want Brie in her crew – she thinks Brie is her biggest competition and she’s probably right.”

Although her reps deny a rift, sources say Jennifer is so threatened that she even ordered BFF Amy Schumer to avoid Brie at the Golden Globes, but her Mean Girl plan backfired.

“Brie was in Amy’s movie ‘Trainwreck’ so they get along well. But Amy spent most of the night trying to keep Brie away from Jen!”

And while Jen knows she can’t be Hollywood’s favorite forever, she refuses to pass the baton gracfully.

“She’s be smarter to make Brie a friend, not an enemy,” says the source.

[From Star Magazine, print edition]

OK Magazine had a similar story about Brie and Jennifer’s “feud,” with sources claiming that “Jen just didn’t hit it off with Brie” and “Brie was a little uptight for her liking and that she couldn’t hang.” And for what it’s worth, Gossip Cop spoke to an unnamed source on Team J-Law and the source claimed that the alleged rift is bulls—t. Sure. Do I believe that Brie and Jennifer are not BFFs? Sure. Do I believe that J-Law is, like, actively trying to shun Brie? Of course not.

Tom Hiddleston beat Benedict Cumberbatch for ‘best-dressed man’ gong

wenn21270886

Glamour UK has released their list of the best-dressed celebrities in the world. As you can imagine, with a British publication, the list is definitely skewed towards the Brits. Before we talk about the ladies, let’s discuss the men. Apparently, Tom Hiddleston – a man who has barely been on any red carpets in 2014 – won “best dressed man.” I know there’s some kind of blood feud between the Cumberbitches and the Dragonflies, but Benedict really has been seen much more this year. Surely Bendy should have won this particular gong? #RememberTheVelvet

The men’s list, in descending order: Tom Hiddleston, Robert Pattinson (RLY?), David Beckham (that’s fine), Benedict Cumberbatch (#Velvet) and Henry Cavill. The only problem I have with that top five is Sparkles, honestly. Robert Pattinson’s suit game has improved, but that boy still has some styling issues.

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt were crowned “best-dressed couple,” which is funny because no one likes Justin Theroux’s skinny jeans and guyliner. The second best dressed couple? Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield, which… eh, okay. Then Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds, then Posh and Becks, then Beyonce and Jay-Z. Sure.

As for the best-dressed women… Jennifer Lawrence is #1. I’m sure Bedhead will have stuff to say about this, but personally… I think J-Law is still finding her style. She’s a young woman with access to any designer she could ever want, but I get the feeling she just wears what she’s told to wear. She’s not a fashionista… yet. She might be at some point. The rest of the top ten:

1) Jennifer Lawrence
2) Lupita Nyong’o
3) Kristen Stewart
4) Emma Watson
5) Blake Lively
6) Angelina Jolie
7) The Duchess of Cambridge
8) Katy Perry
9) Jennifer Aniston
10) Emma Stone

Lupita loves clothes and she delivers noteworthy style every time she walks onto a red carpet. To me, Lupita > J-Law. Kristen Stewart? She’s improving but I tend to find her one of the worst-dressed young starlets. Emma Watson is fine, Blake Lively is meh, Angelina Jolie is single-handedly bringing back the sack dress. Duchess Kate’s style is… eh, it’s not my cup of tea, but I’m thrilled that Kate didn’t get #1 on this list. I probably would have moved Emma Stone up higher on this list. Kate Moss too – Moss didn’t crack the top ten, how weird is that?

The 2015 Oscars will probably be the least diverse in 20 years: is this a big deal?

TIG poster

Now that autumn has arrived, the Oscar season is officially ramping up. We’ve already seen contenders at Sundance, Cannes, Telluride, Venice, Deauville and Toronto, plus we’ve got the New York and London Film Festivals yet to come in the next two months. So, Oscar races are shaping up and most critics already have their short-lists for who will probably get nominated for all of the big awards. There’s some good news and some bad news. The good news? Worthy, talented and consistently underrated actors will probably be big contenders. People like Julianne Moore, Amy Adams, Benedict Cumberbatch, Eddie Redmayne, JK Simmons, Keira Knightley and Patricia Arquette are some of the wonderful early contenders.

The bad news? Well, look at that list. It’s pretty white. Vulture posted a story yesterday headlined: “Will This Be the Whitest Oscars in Almost 2 Decades?” They were analyzing predictions compiled by the Gold Derby – go here to see the data. In every acting category, the potential nominees are profoundly white. The only exception I see is that some people think the film Selma – starring David Oyelowo as Martin Luther King Jr. and produced by Brad Pitt – might get some heat. One other potential contender: Japanese singer/actor Miyavi, playing a villain in Angelina Jolie’s Unbroken. But that’s about it. A lot of critics thought Chadwick Boseman was amazing in Get On Up, but most doubt the performance will earn him an Oscar nomination.

So, does it matter? Of course it matters. Just weeks after Lupita Nyong’o won an Oscar for her first major film role, anonymous film producers were musing about whether her skin was too dark and whether anyone would buy her as a leading lady. And, as Vulture points out, most of the racially diverse Oscar nominees of the past few years are now doing television – think about Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer, Demian Bichir, Chiwetel Ejiofor, etc. There’s less drama about race in TV these days, and it’s easier for minority actors to get a safe, consistent and even professionally challenging gig in TV rather than hustle to play some racist trope in a Hollywood film.

I’m not planting a flag for tokenism, by the way. I’m not saying that every year, a certain number of minority actors needs to be nominated just because. I’m saying that Hollywood’s diversity problem is ridiculous and it will be a shame if only white actors are nominated this year. I mean, Channing Tatum is probably going to be nominated this year!! That’s what we’ve come to. Then again, Channing is a Potato-American. Diversity!

Lupita has been on the best dressed list at most events this year, but her Prada MET Gala look from last night is quite a debatable one: feathers, beads, headband, brown and green all matchy-matchy in an unusual ensemble.

On being called gorgeous:

“Being called gorgeous is not a bad thing! But at the same time, I don’t want to thrive on people’s opinions of me.”

On fashion:

“I wasn’t a follower of fashion. It was a world unknown. Then I met my stylist, Micaela Erlanger [introduced to her by friend and Non-Stop costar Michelle Dockery], and we came to interpret my style: clean lines, strong color. I don’t dress to impress; I don’t feel that pressure.”
