Leonardo DiCaprio Takes Private Jet to Accept Environmental Award

This week, Leonardo DiCaprio was bestowed with a prestigious award for his environmental activism by New York nonprofit Riverkeeper.

Awesome. Except that he arrived to the city via private jet.

Maybe not so awesome.

The actor was in France for the Cannes Film Festival when he jetted off to NYC, and then returned to the South of France the next day in another private jet.

Needless to say, many fans weren’t thrilled, because that’s a lot of gas for just one dude.

Nevertheless, DiCaprio’s rep explained that the Oscar-winner was due back in Cannes to speak at the amfAR Cinema Against AIDS Gala and had few options for transportation.

“He was asked to speak at both Riverkeeper and amfAR events, but the only way to attend the two fundraisers was to hitch a ride with flights that were already planned,” the rep told Us Weekly.

“Leo helped both events raise millions, donated his own funds, auctioned off his house and had speaking roles in both programs.”

Yeah, but still. The optics.

During the gala, DiCaprio auctioned off a stay at his Palm Springs home for $336,000, which benefitted the charity.

DiCaprio dedicated a good portion of his acceptance speech at the Academy Awards this year to the subject of climate change.

“Climate change is real. It is happening right now,” he told the audience. “It is the most urgent threat affecting our entire species.”

“We need to support leaders around the world… who speak for all of humanity… I thank you all for this amazing award tonight. Let us not take this planet for granted. I do not take this award for granted.”

After the speech, he received a standing ovation and the adoration of environmentalists everywhere.

Is Garner competing with Affleck to see who can get the most publicity?

Screen Shot 2016-03-01 at 7.10.44 PM_edited-1
Jennifer Garner timed her Vanity Fair cover so that it came out on the Friday right before the Oscars. The last time she was at the Academy Awards was in 2014 when she was a presenter, and Affleck was her date. (That was the year following his 2013 win for Best Picture, for Argo.) This year she was a presenter again and she flew solo. So she wanted people to know about it, so she got some publicity ahead of the Oscars.

It’s also interesting to me that Garner’s publicity blitz for her Christian movie, Miracles from Heaven, out March 16th, comes as Affleck is furiously trying to promote Batman v. Superman, out March 25th. Warner Brothers is said to be running scared because Deadpool changed the entire superhero genre with an insanely successful dirty, funny R-Rated movie made on a $58 million budget. Batman v. Superman is an old school dark superhero movie that looks like it takes itself too seriously. It may also end up being the most expensive movie ever made. Just a few months ago we heard that the production budget was up to $410 million.

So there’s a lot riding on Batman v. Superman, including Affleck’s career. He wrote it after all. You get the sense that Garner is trying to steal his thunder, which I don’t blame her for. It’s clever, she’s not being openly disparaging of him despite the digs she got in during her interview and she’s getting her side of the story out there. Radar claims that Affleck’s team is livid about her VF interview because Garner confirmed that Affleck was with the nanny – even though she tried to soften the blow by saying they were separated at the time. They quote a source who claims Affleck and his team are “furious,” but that he “can’t do anything until after his movies come out.” He also has Live by Night slated for release, but Radar is wrong, it’s not out until 2017. So maybe that’s all conjecture, but it’s hard to see how Affleck’s people would sign off on Garner’s VF interview.

In the latest news about these two, Affleck has a contest through Omaze which offers a ride in the Batman to the film’s premiere to a random person who donates to his charity, The Eastern Congo Initiative. He visited Warner Brothers Studio tour and surprised fans with a ride in The Batmobile. You can see that video here, it was actually really cute. Meanwhile Vanity Fair has released a video of Jennifer Garner reading Go The F-k To Sleep in her saccharine sweet way. This book came out in 2011 and yet another celebrity reading it seems hackneyed. I really do get the impression that she’s competing with him now, and that she’s going to show him that she can fight back and come out of it smelling like roses.

Cheryl Boone Isaacs calls for more diversity within the Academy’s voting blocs

wenn23359038

As we discussed earlier, Chris Rock is currently feeling the pressure to possibly pull out of hosting the Academy Awards. Also feeling pressure? Cheryl Boone Isaacs, the president of the Academy and an African-American woman (the first African-American woman to hold that position). Cheryl was openly critical of her organization last year when the #OscarsSoWhite debacle first broke, but now it’s the second year in a row with no actors of color up for any awards and with all of the Best Picture nominees being films about white people. Boone Isaacs released a statement last night about the ongoing controversy:

“I’d like to acknowledge the wonderful work of this year’s nominees. While we celebrate their extraordinary achievements, I am both heartbroken and frustrated about the lack of inclusion. This is a difficult but important conversation, and it’s time for big changes. The Academy is taking dramatic steps to alter the makeup of our membership. In the coming days and weeks we will conduct a review of our membership recruitment in order to bring about much-needed diversity in our 2016 class and beyond. As many of you know, we have implemented changes to diversify our membership in the last four years. But the change is not coming as fast as we would like. We need to do more, and better and more quickly.

“This isn’t unprecedented for the Academy. In the ‘60s and ‘70s it was about recruiting younger members to stay vital and relevant. In 2016, the mandate is inclusion in all of its facets: gender, race, ethnicity and sexual orientation. We recognize the very real concerns of our community, and I so appreciate all of you who have reached out to me in our effort to move forward together.”

Jared Leto on Michael Fassbender’s Oscar shade: ‘It’s kind of ridiculous to complain’

wenn20754151

Many of you have not been paying close enough attention to just how wonderful Jared Leto’s Oscar campaign has been thus far. I really do think he’s the front-runner right now for his dedicated and Method portrayal of a transgender character with AIDS in Dallas Buyers Club. His big competition for the award would probably be Michael Fassbender in 12 Years a Slave, but Fassy has pretty much abandoned any potential Oscar campaign (and no, not just because Fassy is working half-way around the world right now – Fassy could be doing interviews and press for the film, but he doesn’t give a sh-t.). Well, things have just gotten more interesting. We’ve got a “SHOTS FIRED” moment now. Jared Leto sat down for an interview with HuffPo and he’s basically like, “Hey, Fassbender, hey Joaquin Phoenix – you bitches should stop complaining about the Oscar campaigns!”

Thanks to nominations from the Screen Actors Guild and Golden Globes as well as numerous critics’ groups awards, Jared Leto is well on his way to earning an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

“You never know, but it’s nice to hear you say,” Leto told Ricky Camilleri when the HuffPost Live host broached Leto’s possible future designation as an Academy Award nominee. Should things work out as expected, Leto will score his first Oscar nomination for his performance in “Dallas Buyers Club,” where he plays a transgender woman suffering from AIDS. The prospect of playing such a large role during awards season has Leto excited, unlike actors such as Michael Fassbender and Joaquin Phoenix, both of whom have slammed the notion of campaigning for Oscars in interviews over the last year.

“They had done it before, so I guess they have every right to complain about it, but I think it’s kind of ridiculous to complain about celebrating art and creativity and your peers,” Leto said after Camilleri brought up the opinions of Fassbender and Phoenix. “It’s certainly better than not celebrating each other. I’ve been a part of a lot of films where we all had high hopes and things just didn’t turn out the way you had expected or dreamed that they would. When they do turn out in a way that works, and people celebrate, I think it’s a wonderful thing to acknowledge that. This hasn’t been anything but a joy so far.”

After Camilleri joked that Leto should attack the Oscar institution as a whole, Leto said that he didn’t “understand people that thumb their nose at that sh-t.”

“It’s your peers,” the 41-year-old star continued. “If you don’t want to be a part of it, just shut up and go away and don’t be a part of it, I suppose. No one is forcing you to show up at the awards ceremony. Just don’t go.”

For his part, Fassbender, an awards contender for his “12 Years A Slave” performance, never criticized the Oscar ceremony itself, but the dog-and-pony show that precedes the event.

“[Campaigning is] just not going to happen, because I’ll be in New Zealand. I’ll be on the other side of the world,” Fassbender told GQ in November about his year ahead. “You know, I get it. Everybody’s got to do their job. So you try and help and facilitate as best you can. But I won’t put myself through that kind of situation again.”

Fassbender was expected to earn Oscar recognition in 2011 for his performance in Steve McQueen’s “Shame,” but the actor was snubbed by the Academy Awards, one of the most high-profile exclusions in recent memory.

“At the beginning people [say], ‘You’re going to be going to the Oscars,’ and you’re like, ‘Whatever, doesn’t matter, don’t think so,’” Fassbender told GQ in June of 2012. “But after a while it does penetrate. After a while you’re like, ‘Anyway, so I’m going to the Oscars.’ And you start to believe it. And I did. I thought I was going. And then I found out I wasn’t and I was upset. I was very upset by it. The first reaction was ‘What the f–k…?’”

[From HuffPo]

For those of you who will want to nit-pick and claim that Jared is not explicitly calling out Fassbender and Phoenix, I completely disagree. His comments come during a discussion specifically about how Fassbender and Phoenix have complained about the Oscar campaigns and such. And for what it’s worth, I think Jared is right. I think he’s been through some situations where he thought one of his films would get more attention and acclaim, and it hurt when the films were ignored. So, he’s enjoying his position now and he’s grateful. Gratitude is rewarded more often than not.

Stacy Keibler wants us to know she & George Clooney hadn’t had sex in ‘months’

I’m loving all of the angst and hand-wringing coming out the George Clooney and Stacy Keibler breakup. It’s like Clooney’s people think that we haven’t identified his “dating” pattern already, and it’s like Stacy Keibler thinks she was the first Clooney Girl EVER. Dear Stacy: you just got Sarah Larsen’d. Anyway, in yesterday’s post I talked about my assumption that George had given Stacy some “parting gifts” with the breakup, which he did with Elisabetta Canalis and Sarah Larsen too. I think Elisabetta got cash and a nondisclosure agreement. And I believe Stacy got jewelry, a condo, and a job hosting a Lifetime reality show. And probably cash and a nondisclosure agreement too! But before Stacy signs on the dotted line and promises to never, ever speak of Clooney’s proclivities (cough, cough), Stacy must have let it slip that she and The Permanent Sexiest Bachelor hadn’t had sex in MONTHS.

George Clooney’s split from Stacy Keibler after two years of dating didn’t exactly come out of nowhere. The couple had been on the rocks for months and had even been going through a bit of a dry spell, sexually speaking, before the breakup, a source reveals in the new issue of Us Weekly, on stands Friday.

“They hadn’t had sex in months,” the source tells Us. “He’s been in Europe, and she’s in L.A., and they haven’t seen each other in a long time. Some girls would be okay with that and just be happy dating George, but not her.”

“She knew he wasn’t looking to get married,” another insider says. “But there was always that fantasy that he would commit. Sadly, it just ran its course.”

Indeed, as Us Weekly previously reported, the couple had been drifting apart for months. “It’s been slowly falling apart for awhile,” one source told Us of the couple. Added another: “Stacy and George have been having ongoing discussions in the last few weeks. It wasn’t a one-sided decision. No one got dumped. They both discussed it and realized it was better that they split.”

Linked since July 2011, the Gravity actor, 52, and the Supermarket Superstar host, 33, made their official red carpet debut together at the Toronto Film Festival that fall. In the two years after, Keibler was a constant presence at Clooney’s side, accompanying him to high-profile events like the Golden Globes and the Academy Awards. They also spent plenty of quality time at the Golden Globe winner’s famed Lake Como compound in Italy.

In recent months, however, things were strained. “The end is near,” one source predicted in March. “It’s a matter of time.”

[From Us Weekly]

Ouch. I do believe that came from Team Keibler, and that it was aimed at Clooney’s heartthrob, happy-bachelor image. It’s not as hardcore as “letting it slip” to People Mag that your ex is impotent, but it’s still pretty damaging. I also suspect it’s the truth for many reasons. One, I don’t think Stacy and George have been together romantically, physically or whatever since March. I think the past four months have been a negotiation of who would get what and what Stacy needed to sign the nondisclosure agreement and who was going to pay for the decorations in her new condo. Also, the “no sex for months” thing wouldn’t surprise me because George has looked like he’s in a lot of pain for a few years now. I think he’s still dealing with some really serious back problems, which means sex is probably a chore for him. It also wouldn’t surprise me to learn that George is on painkillers. For his back and for whatever injuries he sustained during the “honeymoon” stage of his relationship with Stacy.

Ethan Hawke Hates The Oscars As Much As I do

ethan hawke lol

Ethan Hawke has a little something to say about The Oscars. Spoiler alert: he hates them. Like, a lot. Is he just jealous? Who cares, he has good points. From The Huffington Post,

People want to turn everything in this country into a competition. It’s so asinine … if you look at how many forgettable, stupid movies have won Oscars and how many mediocre performers have Oscars above their fireplace. Making a priority of chasing these fake carrots and money and dubious accolades, I think it’s really destructive.

Unfortunately somewhere his publicist had a heart attack and this backpeddling occured,

I think The Oscars do a very good job in representing much of the great work in a given year. Inevitably though, many great films and performances are not recognized and can be overlooked due to the mass marketing and PR machines that march through the awards season. I don’t mean to take anything away from the genuine and deserved excitement that every nominee should feel.

Dude, stand by your statements! Last year, Joaquin Phoenix said of The Oscars,

I think it’s bullshit. I think it’s total, utter bullshit, and I don’t want to be a part of it. I don’t believe in it. It’s a carrot, but it’s the worst-tasting carrot I’ve ever tasted in my whole life. I don’t want this carrot. It’s totally subjective. Pitting people against each other … It’s the stupidest thing in the whole world.

EFF YEAH! Phoenix is nominated this year for The Master. I hope he doesn’t show up, to really stand by his statement. Or if he does show up, I hope it’s in a t-shirt and jeans and he calls everybody “bro.”

HAPPY OSCAR WEEKEND!
