Are the Cambridges allegedly considering a permanent move to London?

When I wrote about Ingrid Seward’s Mail-on-Sunday takedown of the Cambridges last week, I began to develop a theory about Prince William’s EAAA job. Sources have insisted that William barely even shows up to his part-time air-ambulance-pilot job, and when he does show up, he seems pretty bored. This is not a surprise – as soon as William began training for the job, I wondered if he would even make it a year in the position, and that was before we knew that he was really stretching the boundaries of what it means to work “part-time.” Anyway, I theorized that after William’s terrible month of sh-tty press, he would soon be announcing his retirement from the EAAA, and that he would be on to a new scheme to avoid royal work. Well, here’s something that adds to my theory – apparently, Will and Kate are looking to send George to a pre-prep school… in London! The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have put Prince George’s name down for his father’s old pre-prep school, Wetherby, I hear. It could be the clearest sign yet that the couple plan to relocate from Anmer Hall in Norfolk and take up permanent residence at Kensington Palace, which is half a mile from the all-boys’ school. There had been speculation that George, right, who currently attends a Montessori nursery, would go to Beeston Hall in Cromer. That would have allowed Kate, 34, to remain at secluded Anmer Hall, the home she retreated to when she abandoned the 115-year-old tradition of a female Royal presenting the Irish Guards with shamrocks on St Patrick’s Day. Although she relishes raising George, two, and his sister Charlotte in the privacy and tranquility of the countryside, it now seems that the Duchess may feel duty-bound to return to London and become full-time working Royal. It would also explain why Kate undertook a taxpayer-funded £4.5 million refurbishment of Kensington Palace in 2014. If George takes up his place, he will start at Wetherby next year. The move will put Kate and William in the capital at a time when the Queen, by then 91, will be reducing her workload. William and his brother Harry attended Wetherby, which charges £6,500 a term, before they left for Eton feeder Ludgrove prep. Wetherby pupils wear a distinctive red tie, grey cap and scarlet-trimmed blazer – I’m sure George will look adorable. [From The Daily Mail] Is this a signal that someone – either the Queen or Charles – has put their foot down about this increasingly farcical Gentleman Country Farmer/Norfolk Scheme? Or is this much to do about nothing? It’s possible William and Kate are still focused on doing the bare minimum from Norfolk, but they want to make it look like they’re considering moving to London. I guess I have problems believing that Will and Kate would relocate from Norfolk to London without months of more drama and tantrums. Speaking of, did you guys read the epic takedown of Kate in the Daily Mail on Friday? It was the best of British shade – they acted like they were complimenting her when really they were picking apart everything she has done as a duchess. They even call her the Duchess of Do-Little!! Yikes. The Mail points out that Kate “has become even more regal than her Royal in-laws” by half-mocking the fake-poshness of her accent, the changes she’s made to the way she walks and has her photograph taken, how she sits and how she’s all but abandoned High Street for customized pieces at an “astronomical cost.” What’s weird is that I disagree with a large part of this famed “transformation” Kate has made to make herself more regal. She spends a lot of her father-in-law’s money, for sure, but it wasn’t so long ago that we were getting regular Marilyn Moments, sausage curls, jeggings-as-formalwear, etc. While I know that’s not the point – the point was to roll our eyes at Kate’s nouveau riche ways – I found myself rolling my eyes at the Daily Mail’s overblown way of trying to take her down. Prince Harry’s Nepal trip involved pretending to be a tiger & being adorable

In between his work with wounded veterans and his advance work for the Invictus Games in May, Prince Harry found time to make a trip to Nepal. These are some lovely photos of Harry over the weekend and today in Nepal. So far, he’s visited some of the sites destroyed by 2015 earthquake and he’s visited some Red Cross sites as they are still on the ground dealing with the humanitarian disaster. Like Prince William, Harry cares about conservation efforts. Unlike William, Harry doesn’t deflect to conservation work when he’s being criticized for being work-shy. Harry visited the Bardia National Park in search of tigers, but he didn’t get to see any. He did get to see an elephant though! And he got to play-act at being a tiger for the tiger camera-trap. When Harry signed the guest book, he literally signed it “Capt. Wales!” With an exclamation point, because he’s adorable. Tonight he’s going to be spending the night in the “hamlet” of Leorani, in the mountains. I think he’s going to camp out. Lovely, lovely Harry. The @KensingtonRoyal Twitter has been posting tons of pics – go here to see more. PS… Lately there hasn’t been a lot of love for Harry, so if you want me to continue writing about him when we get new photos, honk if you love Harry!! Photos courtesy of Pacific Coast News.

Ingrid Seward: William & Kate are ‘a rich, increasingly spoiled couple’

Ingrid Seward is a prominent royal writer, biographer and editor in the UK. She’s often called in by American publications to explain royal traditions or provide sugary quotes about the greatness of the Queen, the Prince of Wales or the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. Like, People Magazine interviews her all the time and often throws in some of her quotes in pieces about the Cambridges. She’s known as a more conservative and pro-monarchy royal writer. So this is sort of amazing – Ingrid Seward wrote a column in the Mail on Sunday about the Cambridges’ janky media strategy and just what a boneheaded idea it was for Kate to skip out on the Irish Guards on St. Patrick’s Day. If even Seward feels bold enough to issue a public smackdown, you know there are issues. You can read the full piece here. Some highlights: Missing out on the Irish Guards ceremony on St. Patrick’s Day: “So unthinking were her advisers in Kensington Palace that when a row about her absence erupted they replied that she’d simply gone home to Norfolk to be with her children. For Kate to miss an opportunity to honour the Armed Forces with such a lame excuse shows a distinct lack of understanding. If she wants to be thought of as a modern princess who will go the extra mile for the brave soldiers she represents through her charities, she should have been there at their new barracks at Hounslow, not at home in Anmer Hall. It somehow made the covenant between Royals and the military look as if it didn’t matter.” Seward blames bad advisors: “The Duchess’s advisers should have stopped to think how pitiful an excuse it looked to soldiers who have been divided from their families for months on operational tours since British Forces became engaged in the War on Terror in 2003. But they clearly did not. Sadly, for William and Kate, who could do no wrong at the time of their marriage in April 2011, it’s another unnecessary mistake.” William gets slammed too: “Last month the Duke failed to show up at the Baftas for the second year running. He is the Academy’s president, so it’s as if the cream of British cinema and a clutch of Hollywood A-listers had been stood up by their host. Again….Prince William said recently that the growing criticism of himself and his wife ‘came with the territory’. But it doesn’t have to. If he did not appear to be chafing quite so much at his Royal responsibilities and was more accepting of the affection on offer from the millions who will one day be his subjects, he could be forgiven a lot.” Instead of being friendly to British media, William is courting foreign media: “Prince William seems to be impervious to this idea. Instead he has begun to groom foreign media who give him the same platitudinous message that they give various celebrities. While holding the British press at arm’s length, the younger members of the Royal Family are giving cuddly, banal interviews to favoured publications and American TV networks.” Surrounded by privilege: “When William and Kate first married they insisted they didn’t want to be hidden in the ivory tower of royalty. They wanted to be with the people doing what they did, not surrounded by riches and privilege. Now they are doing just that. Of course they will one day be anointed King and Queen, and they will need their people behind them. Courting favour overseas won’t work and nor will ignoring public opinion at home.” The spoiled couple: “They may have been thrilled by their own cleverness at having a secret four-day ski break in Courchevel earlier this month but where they see an entitlement to privacy, the public see a rich, increasingly spoiled couple growing surprisingly distant.” [From The Daily Mail] The rest of Seward’s piece is a comparison of the Cambridges to the older royals, with Seward even saying that the Duchess of Cornwall understands the royal role so much better than William and Kate. Charles gets compliments as well for always putting duty first, for working so hard, etc. As I said, if someone like Seward is throwing down some heavy criticism of William and Kate, you know it’s bad. You know what I’m starting to wonder? I’m quietly developing a theory that all of this criticism might work in William’s favor in one particular way – he’ll use this as an excuse to quit his part-time EAAA job, which clearly already bores him to tears. He’ll say he has to quit the EAAA because something something criticism and his royal role. Then he’ll be on to a new scheme to avoid royal work. Oh, and the Sunday Express ran an interesting piece about Kate skipping out on the Irish Guards too – go here to read. Apparently, Kensington Palace is now claiming that they informed the Irish Guards “months” ago that Kate would not be handing out shamrocks this year. And somehow she knew months ago that she would need that day to prioritize her children? It’s a weird explanation. Photos courtesy of Fame/Flynet and WENN.

Beatrice Casiraghi wore Giambattista Valli to the Rose Ball: amazing or tragic?

The Grimaldis celebrated one of their biggest annual events over the weekend. Every year, Prince Albert hosts the Rose Ball, a huge fundraiser for the Princess Grace Foundation, one of the Grimaldis’ big charitable organizations. The Rose Ball is a huge deal. So is it weird that Princess Charlene didn’t come out for it? I’ve been saying that Charlene and Albert seem a lot stronger now that they’ve got an heir and a spare (Gabrielle and Jacques), but it also feels like Charlene skips out on a lot of stuff now that she’s got the babies as an excuse to not be around. So, at this year’s Rose Ball, Albert’s sister Princess Caroline acted as hostess, and her children came out. Andrea and his wife Tatiana were there, as were the rest of her kids: Pierre Casiraghi and his new wife Beatrice, Charlotte Casiraghi (who was also missing her partner, Gad), and Princess Alexandra of Hanover, who is Caroline’s youngest child, the only child Caroline had with Ernst August of Hanover. Caroline and Ernst are pretty much separated full time – I don’t think he’s ever in Monaco, and he seems to live with a succession of mistresses all around the world. Just FYI. As for the fashion, Caroline, Charlotte and Alexandra all wore Chanel. Karl Lagerfeld is particularly close to the Grimaldis, and he often dresses the royal women. I personally like that Charlotte went with a caped pantsuit, it looks daring and modern on her, although the silk satin is slightly budget for Chanel. The big show-stopped look came from Beatrice Casiraghi, who married Pierre last summer in a lavish, multi-nation extravaganza. Beatrice is Italian, so she chose to wear an Italian designer: Giambattista Valli. Her gown with big, frothy and red. I actually like the big-ball-gown look, and my only real qualm is that with all of that old-money and glamour, her wispy bangs still look kind of awful. Photos courtesy of Pacific Coast News.

The Cambridges ‘were just like a family on holiday but with loads of help’

Just thought you’d like to see the front page of The Sun! I love how The Sun doesn’t even care, they’re just calling him Work-Shy Will all the time now. The Daily Mail has been doing it too. Anyway, if you’re still reeling from how tone-deaf the Cambridges’ vacation was, you’re not alone. Obviously, a lot of people in the British media feel the same way. Which is why all the papers have been on the hunt for damaging details about the trip, or any unnamed-source willing to go on the record about how out of touch William and Kate are. HuffPo UK ran some coverage about how Piers Morgan claimed William “hates the press and this is a very deliberate and unacceptable attempt to shackle and control them.” To which HuffPo’s “source” said: A source told The Huffington Post UK that this was not the case and the Cambridges’ decision to holiday in relative privacy was borne out of a desire to shield their young children from a stressful exchange with the media. The source said: “The Duke and Duchess feel strongly that small children should not be paraded around the media and inviting a trusted photographer allowed pictures to be shared with the public in an less obtrusive way. There are no deals to be done around the privacy of the children, and they [the Duke and Duchess] are confident in the decisions they are making.” [From HuffPo UK] That’s their habit, whenever anyone questions the way Will and Kate operate, they deflect to their children. It’s all for their kids, and they are raising their kids their way. Except that The Telegraph points out the holiday was mostly a getaway for Will and Kate, and they brought lots of nannies and staff to handle the children. Details have begun to emerge of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s first family holiday as a family in D, which included arriving by private jet and dining in some of the resort’s finest restaurants. They took Prince George, two, and Princess Charlotte, 10 months, on a four-night secret jaunt to the French Alps, with Kensington Palace only releasing photographs following their return to the UK. Conditions were too dangerous on Wednesday to land at Courchevel’s altiport, which has a runway of just 537m and is considered to be one of the most dangerous airports in the world. With no lighting aids, landing in fog and low clouds is impossible. Instead, the royal family are believed to have flown by private jet with their close friend James Meade and his wife Lady Laura Marsham. The jet reportedly owned by the billionaire Duke of Westminster, to Chambery and travelled the remaining 60 miles by a chauffeur-driven private hire car. The royal family and their entourage of nannies and security guards stayed at a luxury chalet in Courchevel 1850, the most expensive district in Les Trois Vallees, hiring an English team of chalet staff from a local company. Lined with designer boutiques including Dior, Chanel and Prada, the resort is the highest in Courchevel and boasts five Michelin star restaurants. It has more expensive hotels than any city in France other than Paris, including three with the top “Palace” rating, 16 with five-star status. The lower resorts – Courchevel Le Praz (1300), Courchevel Moriond (1650) and Courchevel Village (1550) – are more modest and affordable. An employee at Le Pilatus restaurant, at the base of the slopes, said that the royal couple enjoyed a meal at the restaurant during their stay at the exclusive resort….The couple appeared to have just been skiing and were accompanied but two adult friends but no children, he added. The Duke and Duchess were also spotted lunching alone at La Soucoupe, a popular and expensive mountain restaurant above Courchevel that is run by its vivacious owner, Marta Pecchio. The restaurant on the piste, which is only accessible by skiing, has a roaring log fire and serves dishes such as tagliatelle with truffles, squid cooked in its own ink, or grilled lobster. A diner at the restaurant said: “They clearly seemed to be enjoying themselves. They were on their own without even a ski instructor, just like normal people. There was no obvious sign of any security guards.” Emily Taylor, 23, from London, saw William and Kate walking just outside a bar on Thursday lunchtime. “I think George had been in a ski lesson because someone was carrying really baby skis,” she told the Daily Mail. “They looked happy and were just walking and talking. A nanny was looking after Charlotte. They were just like a family on holiday but with loads of help.” [From The Telegraph] Of all the complaints that I have about the Cambridges, I have really never cared about the fact that they have child care. They have nannies… so what? A lot of people have nannies. What I do care about is A) when they lie about how much help they have and B) when they lie about how everything is for the children when clearly, Will and Kate just wanted to go on vacation. They brought along their kids so they could pose for photos with them and then William and Kate enjoyed the rest of their holiday without dealing with the kids. And they honestly believed that everyone would just be so grateful to see the kids that no one would question it further. Prince William attends Welsh rugby game, his third royal-work event of the year

See Prince William belt out the Welsh national anthem at rugby match https://t.co/lEfc1LTSCg pic.twitter.com/hKTKgpwFhn — People Magazine (@people) February 27, 2016 Last night, Prince William completed his third royal-work event of 2016. Yes, we’re at the end of February and William has completed all of three events. Plus, he’s done maybe 12 shifts at the EAAA, about 100 hours or 12 days of work. So… yeah, no one knows what he does with all of his free time. But here we are, at a point where the British press falls over themselves to talk about William being hard at work… by attending a rugby game. William is vice royal patron of the Welsh Rugby Union and patron of the Welsh Rugby Charitable Trust, which is how he gets to go to a rugby game and count it as work. William apparently sang the Welsh national anthem, watched the fame and then attended a reception for injured players and their families. Kate was not there – last year, there was talk of Kate fighting against being a “rugby widow” and trying to learn more about the game to support her husband. I guess she’s given that up. Or, you know, she was just home with the kids or whatever. William went on the record saying many words about rugby, but it’s all in one ear and out the other for me. He also managed to slip in some words about his children, saying: “No broken bones yet, but they’re trying. Running around, pushing things, jumping. Please tell me it gets easier… Charlotte is very easy, very sweet, but all the fathers say, ‘Just you wait, when you get to 9, 10, 11, they go crazy.’ I’m looking forward to it, there will be some drama.” [From People] To be fair, how did you expect Will and Kate to organize a pap stroll with George and Charlotte in tow just to make this month’s work-shy kerfuffle blow over? That kind of effective baby-shilling takes time, so William just had to go with mentioning his daughter by name in public. I’m surprised he didn’t “accidentally” refer to his daughter as “Charlotte Elizabeth DIANA.” Speaking of Diana, if you noticed a significant uptick in Diana-mentions at the tailend of the week, it was because the geniuses in Will and Kate’s press office decided to “confirm” that Will and Kate will be visiting the Taj Mahal during their April trip to India. If this doesn’t sound like news, it’s because it’s not. We already knew/suspected/theorized that they would be going to the Taj Mahal, because it’s their first state visit to India and of course they’ll visit the Taj Mahal. But it was “confirmed” by Will and Kate’s press office on Friday, and so the British papers dutifully trotted out the old photos of Diana sitting alone in front of the Taj Mahal, looking forlorn and lonely. I guess the point of the press office pushing the story is that people are supposed to say “at least Diana’s son ended up in a happy marriage.” But… did he? Prince William travels to Wales; meets injured former rugby players & sings national anthem. https://t.co/KmzD0HUvyl pic.twitter.com/ZFIX8YlHw5 — Duchess News Files (@Duchess_Files) February 26, 2016 Embed from Getty Images Photos courtesy of Getty, Twitter.

Duchess Kate blogs from Kensington Palace about children’s mental health

Today is the day. Right at this very moment, our Duchess Kate has turned into a blogger and blog editor. Like many professional bloggers, she’s working from home. Unlike most professional bloggers, Kate’s home is a palace. Kate invited editors and writers from the Huffington Post UK to Kensington Palace today so they could work together to “guest edit” a day of HuffPo UK devoted to children’s mental health. If you follow @KensingtonRoyal, you’ll see that the younger royal’s Twitter feed has been taken over with at least two dozen tweets about Kate’s work. That Twitter feed also posted some photos of Kate in this Reiss blouse at the palace, hard at work. If only we could ALL look this glamorous whilst blogging. Oh, and to start her day, Kate posted this essay about the importance of mental health. Do you think she wrote this herself? Not to be a hater… but I do not believe she wrote this. It is such a privilege to have this opportunity to be Guest Editor of the Huffington Post today, and to celebrate the amazing work being done to improve and understand the mental health of young children. Young Minds Matter, being launched today, is a new series where issues and work around the mental health of young children will be explored. Shortly after I got married, I started working with charities helping those affected by issues such as addiction, family breakdown and vulnerable children. As was to be expected, I often heard some heart-breaking stories about lives that had been torn apart, with devastating impacts for all involved, particularly children. What I did not expect was to see that time and time again, the issues that led people to addiction and destructive decision making seemed to almost always stem from unresolved childhood challenges. It became clear to me that many children – even those younger than five – have to deal with complex problems without the emotional resilience, language or confidence to ask for help. And it was also clear that with mental health problems still being such a taboo, many adults are often too afraid to ask for help for the children in their care. It is time for this to change. The mental health of our children must be seen as every bit as important as their physical health. For too long we have been embarrassed to admit when our children need emotional or psychiatric help, worried that the stigma associated with these problems would be detrimental to their futures. Research published today by the Huffington Post indicates that around a third of parents still worry that they will look like a bad mother or father if their child has a mental health problem. Parenting is hard enough without letting prejudices stop us from asking for the help we need for ourselves and our children. Like most parents today, William and I would not hesitate to seek help for our children if they needed it. We hope to encourage George and Charlotte to speak about their feelings, and to give them the tools and sensitivity to be supportive peers to their friends as they get older. We know there is no shame in a young child struggling with their emotions or suffering from a mental illness. Of course, for some parents and carers seeking help is not so easy. When families are short of time or money it is not always easy to know where to look for help or advice. That is why we need schools and communities to play their full role to help children who are struggling in ways that are not always easy to see. In the series of articles we have commissioned, you will be introduced to some extraordinary people and organisations. You will hear from a recently bereaved wife, confronting the reality that the depression that led to her husband’s suicide was with him as a 10-year old boy. You will hear from people who have fought back from their own serious illness to lead a change in the way we speak to children about their feelings and challenges. You will meet some of the extraordinary researchers who are asking important questions about the mental health of young people, and are getting answers that will be of real benefit to all parents and teachers. I am so grateful to all those who have participated in this series and to all those who will contribute after today. I am also hugely grateful to all of you who will take the time to read, to watch, and to listen to these stories. Together, we have the chance to make a real difference for an entire generation of young children. [From HuffPo UK] “Like most parents today, William and I would not hesitate to seek help for our children if they needed it.” I sometimes wonder about this. Because from what little we know about how the Windsors reacted following Princess Diana’s death, I really don’t think William or Harry ever, ever got any therapy or grief counseling or anything like that. I believe the Windsors are very anti-counseling, anti-talk-therapy, pro-stiff-upper-lip. And I wonder if Kate sometimes wonders if William needs counseling now to deal with his issues. And if William won’t accept help, what would he do if his children needed help? Photos courtesy of WENN, @KensingtonRoyal Twitter.
