Eugenie Bouchard: Taylor Swift ‘portrays herself as the victim a lot’

wenn22812379

Canadian tennis pro Eugenie “Genie” Bouchard is seen by many as one of the future stars of the game. She’s got “the look” of a tennis star – she’s blonde, adorable and bouncy, and she gives off a puppy-ish energy that is definitely endearing. She’s currently ranked 40th in the world, but many expect her to really step up to the plate in the coming years. And like so many youngsters (Genie is just 22 years old), she’s very in tune to pop culture. I mean, so is Serena Williams, but Genie is still so young, she’ll talk on the record about celebrity gossip in the middle of her press conferences. Case in point: Genie was playing the Citi Open this week in DC, and at her press conference on Wednesday, she was asked about the ongoing Kimye-Taylor Swift controversy. Genie has previously professed her love of all things Taylor Swift, and has even met Swift backstage at one of Swift’s concerts last year. But Genie is tired of Swifty’s perpetual-victim shtick. Oh, Genie! I heart you. Start around the 5:55-minute mark.

A tennis star with a HUGE backhand directed at Taylor Swift — says she’s sick of the singer always portraying herself as the victim … just like she’s doing in the Kanye West feud. The tennis star is 22-year-old Eugenie Bouchard — who’s a huge pop culture fan — and was asked about the Taylor vs. Kanye situation after she was knocked out of the Citi Open this week.

“This is probably the hardest question all day,” she said. “I love Taylor Swift and I went to her concert and I love her songs and everything, but I feel like sometimes she portrays herself as the victim a lot and she did this time around, and that she said she wasn’t aware of that specific line. The B.I.T.C.H line. But she heard the other line about having sex so, I’m like really, what’s the huge difference? You approved the thing where Kanye said he’d have sex with you, but you didn’t hear the time he said b****? Come on. It’s all the same thing for me. I think she just way overreacted. I think she just tried to get attention by saying she didn’t approve of that. But it’s the celeb world, and it’s just entertaining. It entertains me when I’m on my own in D.C.”

Dear Taylor Swift: when your core audience – white women in their teens and 20s – turns on you, it’s time to pack it up and go silent for a few months. No more emails to TMZ. No more implicit racism to People Magazine. No more words. Just drop it, take some time off, get a massage, go for a run and regroup. I mean, half of the #Taymerica squad won’t even publicly defend her!! And now her high-profile fans are saying that Tay is just acting like a thirsty liar with the Poor Innocent Blonde Child act.

LA Clippers owner Donald Sterling’s racist remarks cause sponsors to pull out

Celebrities Attend the Associates For Breast And Prostate Cancer Studies Talk Of The Town Benefit Gala
People are waiting for the NBA to take some kind of action following the weekend release of a recording of LA Clippers owner Donald Sterling making horribly racist remarks. Sterling, 80, was caught on tape telling his 38 year-old mistress that she should delete all photos of black people from her Instagram and should not bring African American’s to Clippers games. The story gets more complicated; Sterling’s estranged wife is suing the mistress, V. Stiviano, for the $1.8 million she claims her husband spent on Stiviano over the four years that they were together. Stiviano has denied through her lawyers that she is the one who released the recordings.

The NBA has issued a measured response to this controversy. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has said that “all members of the NBA family should be afforded due process and a fair opportunity to present their side of any controversy, which is why I’m not yet prepared to discuss any potential sanctions against Donald Sterling.” Meanwhile the sponsors aren’t waiting to decide what to do. At least seven companies have ended their relationship with the team and issued strong statements condemning Sterling’s racism. The Hollywood Reporter has a good account of all the sponsors who have pulled out. Also, if you’d like a bullet point breakdown of this scandal, ABC News has an overview. Here’s part of Hollywood Reporter’s coverage, and I’ve added bolding to the relevant companies.

CarMax was the first to pull out Monday morning.

“CarMax finds the statements attributed to the Clippers’ owner completely unacceptable,” said the company in a statement Monday. “These views directly conflict with CarMax’s culture of respect for all individuals. While we have been a proud Clippers sponsor for nine years and support the team, fans and community, these statements necessitate that CarMax end its sponsorship.”

Meanwhile, State Farm interim CEO Steve Stoute said Monday morning on ESPN’s The Herd With Colin Cowherd that he’s putting pressure on fellow sponsors to pull out of their sponsorships as long as the team is associated with Sterling.

“I’m telling the brands, ‘Let’s pull sponsorship,’ starting with State Farm,” he said, as quoted by the Washington Post. “When you have things like this taking place, somebody has to stand up.”

He added that “somebody has to force the sale of this team.” He later clarified: “Sponsoring the athletes is one thing, but not the team.”

The company also issued a statement: “The remarks attributed to the Clippers’ owner are offensive. While those involved sort out the facts, we will be taking a pause in our relationship with the organization. We are monitoring the situation and we’ll continually assess our options. We have a great relationship with Chris Paul and will continue supporting the Born to Assist advertising campaign involving Chris and now other NBA players.”

Red Bull is another big name to decline their support, according to a statement from the energy drink company. “We trust and respect the NBA’s process to formally investigate the matter, and in the interim, are suspending all team-related marketing activities.

“We will continue to support our Red Bull athlete, Blake Griffin, his teammates and coaching staff in their pursuit of an NBA title,” an e-mail to THR concluded.

Another sponsor, Anheuser-Busch, on Monday released a statement to ESPN’s Darren Rovell: “We fully support the NBA’s efforts to investigate quickly and trust that they will take appropriate action.”

Virgin America has also chosen to end its sponsorship of the team, as have Mercedes-Benz and Corona.

“While we continue to support the fans and the players, Virgin America has made the decision to end its sponsorship of the L.A. Clippers,” a spokesperson for the airline told THR.

Another sponsor, Kia Motors, released a statement condemning Sterling’s remarks and explaining that it was suspending sponsorship of the team.

“The comments allegedly made by Clippers owner, Donald Sterling, are offensive and reprehensible, and they are inconsistent with our views and values,” the statement read. “We are suspending our advertising and sponsorship activations with the Clippers. Meanwhile, as fans of the game of basketball, our support of the players and the sport is unwavering.”

AquaHydrate also issued a statement saying it’s suspending its sponsorship.

“In the wake of Donald Sterling’s alleged defamatory and intolerable comments we have decided to suspend our sponsorship with the L.A. Clippers until the NBA completes its investigation,” a rep for the company said Monday. “We fully support the players and fans of the L.A. Clippers and wish them the best in the remainder of the playoffs.”

Yokohama Tire Corporation announced they were also pulling out on Monday, stating: “Yokohama Tire Corporation does not tolerate discrimination in any fashion. The alleged remarks by Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling are completely unacceptable and we find it necessary to immediately suspend our sponsorship of the organization as a result.

“We will continue to assess the situation and weigh our options. Meanwhile, we wish to express our continued support to the Clippers players and fans.”

Other sponsors who have yet to comment include Amtrak, Gatorade, and Taco Bell.

[From The Hollywood Reporter]

So, the sponsors to unequivocally pull out are: CarMax, State Farm, Red Bull, Virgin America, Kia, AquaHydrate and Yokohama Tire Corporation. Anheuser-Busch has issued a statement supporting the NBA and not saying much more, and Amtrak, Gatorade, and Taco Bell have yet to say anything. As an avid consumer of Taco Bell, I will refrain from eating there until they take action. I know that’s not going to do much, but I can live without bean burritos for a while.

The article goes on to report that Clippers players wore their practice jerseys inside out (with the logos not visible) in protest when they took the court on Sunday. The Clippers lost to the Golden State Warriors 97-118 Sunday in the playoffs. They are now tied 2-2 with the Warriors and are due to play them again tonight.

Sterling was caught by the paparazzi out with his supposedly estranged wife at dinner in LA Sunday night. His wife defended him to photographers despite issuing an earlier statement calling him “small minded” and “racist.” The mistress, V. Stiviano, was seen visiting the DA yesterday for some reason. “Sources” aka Stiviano, denied that the visit was related to this case. Stiviano had to be in court to prove that she completed community service stemming from a 2012 DUI arrest, so that may have been why she was seen outside the LA county DA’s office.

TMZ is reporting that the audio of Sterling has been authenticated by NBA lawyers, so the pressure is on for some kind of action against the racist octogenarian.

Joss Whedon Perfectly Explains Feminism

Joss+Whedon+Inside+Make+Equality

Joss Whedon perfectly explained feminism at Equality Now’s “Make Equality Reality” event. A lot of our readers here at Evil Beet call us feminists like it’s a bad thing. I think we all have different definitions of what it is. I can’t explain it better than what Joss Whedon said. I’ll post the video, but here’s the transcript, via E Online. Yeah, it’s long, look for the TL;DR at the bottom:

“Ist” in it’s meaning is also a problem for me. Because you can’t be born an “ist”. It’s not natural… So feminist includes the idea that believing men and women to be equal, believing all people to be people, is not a natural state. That we don’t emerge assuming that everybody in the human race is a human, that the idea of equality is just an idea that’s imposed on us. That we are indoctrinated with it, that it’s an agenda…

…My problem with feminist is not the word. It’s the question. “Are you now, or have you ever been, a feminist?” The great Katy Perry once said—I’m paraphrasing—”I’m not a feminist but I like it when women are strong.”…Don’t know why she feels the need to say the first part, but listening to the word and thinking about it, I realize I do understand. This question that lies before us is one that should lie behind us. The word is problematic for me because there’s another word that we’re missing…
…When you say racist, you are saying that is a negative thing. That is a line that we have crossed. Anything on the side of that line is shameful, is on the wrong side of history. And that is a line that we have crossed in terms of gender but we don’t have the word for it…

…I start thinking about the fact that we have this word when we’re thinking about race that says we have evolved beyond something and we don’t really have this word for gender. Now you could argue sexism, but I’d say that’s a little specific. People feel removed from sexism. ‘I’m not a sexist, but I’m not a feminist.’ They think there’s this fuzzy middle ground. There’s no fuzzy middle ground. You either believe that women are people or you don’t. It’s that simple…

…Genderist. I would like this word to become the new racist. I would like a word that says there was a shameful past before we realized that all people were created equal. And we are past that. And every evolved human being who is intelligent and educated and compassionate and to say I don’t believe that is unacceptable. And Katy Perry won’t say, “I’m not a feminist but I like strong women,” she’ll say, “I’m not a genderist but sometimes I like to dress up pretty.” And that’ll be fine.
This is how we understand society. The word racism didn’t end racism, it contextualized it in a way that we still haven’t done with this issue. Does that mean that this will end the problem? Yes, definitely, we’ve done it.

TL;DR: feminist is not a bad word, calm down.

I wonder if Katy Perry will respond…

Meanwhile I still think Selena Gomez has no idea what the word “feminist” means.

Why Julie Chen Felt Forced To Get Plastic Surgery To Change Her Asian Eyes

julie chen plastic surgery

Julie Chen got plastic surgery when she was around 25. But it wasn’t your typical plastic surgery (read: not boobs). It was to “fix” her “Asian eyes.” And she felt like she had no choice but to undergo the procedure. Here’s what she had to say about it, on The Talk (via Daily News):

[My boss at the time]  said, ‘Let’s face it Julie, how relatable are you to our community? How big of an Asian community do we have in Dayton? On top of that, because of your Asian eyes, I’ve noticed that when you’re on camera, you look disinterested and bored.’ [And my agent] said, ‘I cannot represent you unless you get plastic surgery to make your eyes look bigger.’

Good lord. Wow. This is stuff I’ve never had to think about. That’s terrible. And racism against Asian-americans is still alive and well, as Chen got to see firsthand while hosting the deplorable Big Brother. That Aaryn had simply delightful things to say about Asians.

Chen got the surgery (as shown in the above before/after photo she brought to the show). She mused,

After I had it done, the ball did roll for me. And I wondered, ‘Did I give in to the man?

She goes on to say that she has no regrets.

One question Julie: what’s the reason for the obvious nose job you’re not talking about? Just wondering.

Oprah Weighs In On Paula “Hot Mess” Dean

oprah winfrey paula deen

Oprah hasn’t spoken publicly about Paula Deen’s N-word extravaganza. Considering that she and Oprah were very tight, at least in a business way, I’m a little interested in what she has to say about the whole thing. And Oprah’s also been dealing with her own issues from a former co-star who threw the N-word at her, among other insults.

Oprah sat down with E! News and spoke about Deen. (Via E Online):

I think that Paula Deen represented, you know, millions of people who have used the word. Unfortunately, she is a public figure. And whatever the situation was with the hearing that she had, or had said it and then went on TV and said she had only said it one time, but Paula Deen, I thought, represented a whole lot of people. And I think for the big issue to be made about Paula Deen was what the media does.

E Online also pointed out that in 2012, Oprah visited Deen at her home in Georgia for new show, Oprah’s Next Chapter. At some point, I guess racism came up, as she said to Deen, “You and I both know a lot of people use that word.” Ha. How prophetic. I’m still going to bet that this is the end of their friendship, as Oprah recently said, “You cannot be my friend and use that word around me.”

It’s okay, Paula. You still have O.J.
