Jay-Z didn’t attend the Met Gala because there was ‘no big reason for him to go’

Yesterday I noted how weird it felt to see Beyonce flying solo at the Met Gala. She seemed oddly vulnerable walking the carpet alone. While her sister was there, they didn’t walk the carpet together and they only spent time together inside the event. On the carpet, Beyonce seemed almost cautious, and like she was making a statement by going it alone. Page Six made a big deal about how Beyonce wasn’t wearing her wedding ring too. Sources claim Bey decided not to wear her ring because she didn’t think it “meshed well” with her Becky-skin Givenchy gown. So why did Jay-Z skip this year’s Met Gala? After the elevator drama post-Met Gala in 2014, Jay and Bey made a point of going to the 2015 Met Gala together as a show of solidarity. But post-Lemonade, Jay couldn’t be bothered? Beyoncé completely nailed her 2016 Met Gala look. There was just one thing missing when she hit the red carpet on Monday, May 2, in New York — her husband, Jay Z. Although fashion’s biggest night comes on the heels of Bey’s much talked-about visual album, Lemonade, sources tell Us Weekly that the rapper’s absence is no biggie — he’s simply just been there, done that. “He’s done it before,” the insider explains to Us. “There’s just no big reason for him to go.” [From Us Weekly] Suspicious? Yeah. Anyway, as I said, Bey and Solange spent a lot of time together inside the event. Solange didn’t bring her husband to the gala, but Alan Ferguson did come out for the post-gala parties. Beyoncé attended the Met Gala and after parties sans husband Jay Z. The singer first posed at Gilded Lily for the Balmain bash, where she hung out with the fashion house’s creative director, Olivier Rousteing, and her little sister Solange, who arrived with her husband, Alan Ferguson. “I don’t know where Jay was and I definitely thought it was interesting he didn’t come,” said one partygoer. “It definitely fuels speculation about the relationship, but I think that’s probably the point. People at the Met were talking about it.” But the chatter didn’t bother Beyoncé one bit. She celebrated with Champagne and “was in high spirits hanging out on the banquette with Olivier. She seemed to be in a very good mood,” a different source said. Bey later headed over to Up & Down, where DJ Jus Ske played Beyoncé’s song “Formation” as she arrived with Solange. [From Page Six] I get the feeling that the message – if there is a message – is that Jay-Z is still on notice to a certain extent. Like, Lemonade was about how he cheated, how Beyonce was mad and wanted to destroy everything, but she forgave him and worked through the drama. But he’s still on notice. And hey, maybe he truly didn’t want to go to the gala this year. Suspicious. PS… I absolutely love her party-pants!! Photos courtesy of Fame/Flynet, WENN.

Star: LeAnn Rimes’ friends think Eddie Cibrian will leave when she’s broke

For many, many years now, the tabloids have been obsessed with the idea that LeAnn Rimes is running out of money, or that she’s bad with money, or that she spends too much money supporting her perpetually underemployed husband, Eddie Cibrian. I honestly believe a lot of those stories. While LeAnn was at one time pretty well off, she doesn’t have a lot of income coming in, and she has likely spent a good chunk of her savings since marrying Eddie. But still, we wait for the money to really dry up, and it hasn’t… yet. Which is my way of saying that this Star story could have been published at any point in the past six years: Turns out you can’t live a jet-set lifestyle on zero dollars a year – just ask LeAnn Rimes, who’s hoping a comeback tour will get her finances back in the black. And if it doesn’t, insiders believe it won’t just break the bank, but also her marriage to actor Eddie Cibrian! “LeAnn knows she’s neglected her career for too long,” admits a friend. “At this point she’s known more for her affair with Eddie than for being a singer.” LeAnn’s last album, 2013’s Spitfire, was a flop, and Eddie’s last major job was a three-episode stint on Baby Daddy. “They’ve coasted off LeAnn’s savings since they got together five years ago, but they live large with a huge mansion and lots of trips,” adds the insider. “Plus, she helps support his two sons.” Now LeAnn is ready to hit the road for a big concert tour… just with only two small shows scheduled this year, friends wonder if her dire financial straits will shatter her marriage to the 42-year-old Cibrian, who has grown accustomed to the A-list lifestyle, fueled by his wife’s nest egg. “Eddie married a rich girl on purpose,” says the pal. “So what happens when that’s no longer the case?” [From Star Magazine, print edition] The problem isn’t just that LeAnn is more known for the affair, it’s that she’s known for being a crazy Single White Female and a Twitter-stalker and all of that. And that means no one is really interested in hearing her sing. It’s a weird, LeAnn-specific conundrum, really. There are plenty of C-listers able to find revenue streams through social media, club appearances, random promotional work and guest appearances. But I get the feeling that A) LeAnn thinks a lot of that stuff is beneath her and B) no one is offering those deals to LeAnn anyway. What makes this story extra-funny is that Eddie’s rep went to Gossip Cop to deny it! Did you know Eddie still has a rep? He hasn’t worked in a year, and even then (as Star points out), it was just a minor guest spot on basic-cable. How does he still afford to have a publicist, hm? Well, Eddie DOES have a rep and the rep says: “Their marriage is fine… their finances are fine.” CASE CLOSED! Also, LeAnn posted this on her Instagram. I have no words. I was 14, he was 23. We don't remember meeting. He found this in the garage while going through boxes. 14 years later who knew we'd meet again. Crazy, all the life that happened between those two encounters, the lessons that needed to be learned. Fate? Chance? Serendipity? Who knows ? All we do know is, here we are together and tomorrow we are celebrating 5 years of being married and we wouldn't want to be anywhere else. #crazylove #lovers #friends #partners #hubby #anniversary #5years #throwback #throwbackthursday #tbt ❤️ A photo posted by LeAnn Rimes Cibrian (@leannrimes) on Apr 21, 2016 at 8:39am PDT Photos courtesy of WENN, Fame/Flynet, Instagram.

Taylor Swift in a YSL jumpsuit at the iHeartRadio Awards: try-hard or cute?

I could post 50 photos of Taylor Swift’s pose-harding at the iHeartRadio Awards last night and each photo would make me laugh. It’s not that her outfit or her styling looked ridiculous, it’s just that she was taking the posing SO seriously. She was posing her ass off on this carpet and it was amazing. She really wanted the photographers to get her Saint Laurent Fall 2016 jumpsuit from every angle, especially the butt shots. As for the Saint Laurent jumpsuit … while Taylor has a great figure, I feel like this is sort of unflattering on her. I would have loved to see her in something else from Saint Laurent, like one of the more menswear-inspired looks. Taylor was joined at the awards show by her BFF Selena Gomez and her (Taylor’s) boyfriend Calvin Harris, also known as Adam Wiles. While Calvin and Tay didn’t walk the carpet together, they did sit together and Taylor did thank him during one of her many trips up to the stage to collect her awards, saying: “For the first time, I had the most amazing person to come home to when the spotlight went out and when the crowds were all gone. So I want to thank my boyfriend Adam for that.” Taylor took home awards for Best Tour, Best Female Artist and Album of the Year. Calvin took home the award for Dance Artist of the Year. Taylor also said something about how this was her last awards show for a while. Sure. She’s probably going to spend the spring and summer planning her wedding!!! Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton: It’s Baby-Making Time!

So, things are moving along nicely for these two. It hasn’t been six months since Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton officially started dating, but let’s assume they want to make a baby together. Thankfully, In Touch has already set the scene.  The tabloid claims that Stefani, 46, “is freezing her eggs because she wants to have a baby with Blake.” Stefani has three boys with ex, Gavin Rossdale – Kingston,9, Zuma, 7, and Apollo, 2. The story goes on to mention what every woman loves to read about: the fact that her biological clock is ticking and the chances of conceiving a child diminish as she gets older. Fun! “She’d love to have a girl — plus Gwen knows her boys would love to have another sibling — and wants to give Blake this opportunity to have a child that biologically his,” a source told the tabloid. “But she doesn’t want her age to prevent this from happening.” Shelton, ever the gentleman, reportedly doesn’t want his lady love to fret. “Even though Blake is insisting he doesn’t need biological children, Gwen isn’t taking any chances.” In the April 2016 issue of Vanity Fair, Stefani didn’t elaborate too much on her relationship, but did confirm that she’s totes in L. “I think my spiritual journey is to have had these weird relationships and write music that people can somehow relate to,” Stefani, who just released her latest album, told the magazine. “I’ve never had a record that is almost all about being happy and in love.”

Gwen Stefani: divorce was ‘the worst thing that can happen to me besides death’

Gwen Stefani has a long, extensive interview with LGBT publication Pride Source promoting her new album. She’s asked a lot of questions about her relationship with the gay community, and about being a woman in the male-dominated music industry. To be fair to Stefani, when she talks about her “gay friends” or about one of her sons potentially coming out, she’s asked specifically about that by the journalist, in those words. She’s not bringing it up out without context. The quotes from Stefani which are getting the most press were when she said that she would be “blessed” if one of her sons came out. Again, she was asked what she would do in this instance. Writer Chris Azzopardi knows how to get a good quote. Stefani was extremely chatty too; she said several times that she’s horrible at keeping secrets. She didn’t exactly dish the dirt on her relationship ending, she only described how hurt she was. She did suggest that she was having problems in her relationship around 2013 and frames it around her own personal spiritual journey, which she credits with giving her the tools to survive her divorce. On embarrassing her kids and her divorce I can’t talk about them because they’re gonna be 15 and like, “Mom, why did you say that? You’re embarrassing me!” I have to think a little bit about that now. But I just think… I don’t know how else to be. Everybody knows what happened to me. I got a divorce. It’s the worst thing that can happen to me besides death. Her divorce was devastating My whole life all I wanted to do was be a mother and a wife… In February (2015), my family fell apart. It was devastating. I didn’t know what to do. It was a real big secret, but as I just explained, I’m not good with that. I tried everything to fix it. By June (2015), I went into the studio and started writing. I was praying. I had already started on a spiritual journey when I got pregnant with Apollo (in 2013) that was sort of like, “Wow, really? I’m gonna be blessed with a baby… now?” That was a miracle. It just started me on this spiritual journey and thank God it started then because I was prepared when I had the tragedy. I had that nest of spirituality in me. On criticism of letting her boys paint their nails and dye their hair Of course everyone’s gonna have their perspective and their opinion, and I know what’s real and what’s honest and true, and that’s really all that matters to me and all that’s important. So, it doesn’t really bother me. As long as my boys are protected and happy and I’m spending quality time with them, whether it’s doing sports or doing nails, it really doesn’t matter. Q: “What would you say to one of your boys if they came out to you one day?” I would be blessed with a gay son. You know that I would feel blessed about that. I just want my boys to be happy and healthy, and I just ask God to guide me every day to be a good mother because it is not an easy job. I’ve been lucky enough to have such a blessed life. I’ve been able to travel the world and meet so many different kinds of people. And it doesn’t really matter if you’re gay, straight, whatever. There are good and bad people, and I would be happy. I just want my kids to be happy, and whatever journey God gives them is their journey. On how it’s better now for gay people growing up, she calls “The Danish Girl” “The Dutch Girl” I do know that it’s gotta be difficult to be the alternative, to not be the mainstream, or to be different, if you want to call it that. I feel like it’s less and less (like that) these days, and it’s hard for me to understand because it doesn’t seem different or weird or anything anymore because it just seems so normal to me. I just saw that movie… what was it… “The Dutch Girl”? “The Danish Girl”…? Yeah, “The Danish Girl.” I think what was so incredible about that movie was just – that was so long ago. I mean, can you imagine back then? Whoa. Now it feels like nothing anymore. [From Pride Source] Her heart’s in the right place, even if she comes across as rather ditzy at times. The entire interview is long and well worth reading if you’re interested in her at all. Stefani references God and feeling “blessed” multiple times, as she’s done in past interviews. She peppers so many religious references into the conversation that she sounds like she’s from the south. It makes me wonder if that’s Blake Shelton’s influence, because Stefani was raised Catholic in California. I’m a former Catholic too and in my experience we don’t bring up God that much in everyday conversation. As for the end of her relationship with Gavin Rossdale, she describes it as a tragedy and like a death, which she’s said before. Stefani claims that she has a confessional nature but she seems to be hinting around the details behind her divorce, like she’s trying to keep some things from the public but is just dying to tell us. She may be doing that with the lyrics to her songs. “Red Flag” is about a one-sided relationship imploding “Big mistake, red flags fly… you know how to blow up” while “Naughty” definitely seems to be about Rossdale. Read these lyrics, “You did it, and then you hid it…The naughty, naughty things you do. I think there’s something that you might perhaps forgot to say. Locked in the closet but it never goes away.” That closet line sounds telling right? This is What The Truth Feels Like is currently number one on Billboard’s Hot 200 charts. Iggy Azalea: ‘I’m not going to suddenly start rapping about political matters’

This is the second five-page, intensive, wordy magazine interview I’ve read in the past 24 hours. Tina Fey was worth it – Iggy Azalea is not. Iggy covers the new issue of Elle Canada and she looks like a sad Barbie doll in the editorial. While she freely admits that she’s had work done – and sure, I’m happy that she admits it – I still don’t understand why she’s messed with her face to this extent. She was pretty before all of this. Anyway, Iggy is about to release her new album, Digital Distortion. And she’s trying to rebrand herself in ways beyond her new face. In this Elle interview, she even comes close to sounding regretful. You can read the full piece here. She’s back on social media after a self-imposed hiatus: “I’m back. But this time I’ve given myself some rules so I don’t get too sucked in again. For me, what happened, not just on social media but with everything in my career, was like a whirlwind. I started to feel like I was losing control over my own life… I even think back to the Papa John’s incident and ask myself ‘Why did that piss you off so much?’ I see now that it spiralled into something so quickly because I felt like I didn’t have any power over my own life. At that point, I needed to take some time, step away and just get that control back.” Her fraught relationship with the hip-hop community: “So many people think that I don’t care about rap music and the community, but I absolutely care about it, to the core of my being. That’s why the Q-Tip incident annoyed me so much: Why do you think I need a history lesson? Because surely if I did know anything about hip hop, I wouldn’t mix pop and rap together? Or I wouldn’t rap in an American accent if I truly understood? I just have a different perspective about rap music. I love learning about hip hop, I love reading about it and I actually love having debates with other people about it.” Whether there are valid criticisms aimed at her: “Do you not like me because I rap with an American accent and I’m not American? Well, that’s valid on some level because that’s your opinion and I can’t change that. But I’m not trying to sound black—I just grew up in a country where on TV and in music and film, everyone was American or any Australian person in them put on an American accent. So I never saw it as strange at all. And I think it’s hard for Americans to understand this because, when you look at the entertainment industry, American culture is the dominating culture across the globe. A lot of people say ‘Imagine if someone rapped with a fake Australian accent.’ Well, okay, but you don’t turn on the TV and hear American people with fake Australian accents, so I don’t think it’s a fair comparison. I grew up watching Nicole Kidman speaking with an American accent in every movie. Even Keith Urban sings with an American country accent. And that’s just what you have to do to make it in this industry and be accepted. It’s what I heard and it’s what I saw, so how can you not understand that that would be influential for me?” The racial part of the conversation: “It’s black culture and black music, so it becomes a racial conversation—versus Keith Urban, who is making country music, which is considered white. It becomes a very muddy area. And it became especially difficult in 2015. The United States has such a fraught history with race, and I don’t think I realized how prevalent racism still is and how hurt people still are until I moved here and saw it for myself. As I was growing up in Australia, it was easy to think ‘Well, that was then and obviously it’s not like that now.’ It’s not something you can understand when you’re on the other side of the world. But many people think I still live in that bubble and that I don’t understand that the United States is set up in a way that doesn’t benefit minorities. I’ve lived here for 10 years now, and I don’t want it to be that way either. I’m marrying a black man, and my children will be half black—of course I care about these things. And I understand if you’re not comfortable that I rap with an American accent, and you are totally entitled to your own opinions, but you don’t have to listen to my music. I’m still going to keep making music.” Her future goals in music: “I think it’s important for music to reflect what is going on socially and for there to be those kinds of voices within the industry. But I want to be that person you can listen to for four minutes and not think about that stuff at all, and it’s important to have that too…. I’m not going to suddenly start rapping about political matters; it’s just not what I do. There are other great people who do that, like Kendrick Lamar and J. Cole. I’m not here to offer that commentary, but that doesn’t mean I don’t care. I don’t think everyone has to be everything—like, does Katy Perry have to start making songs about politics? I think it’s good to still be able to have a little fun.” Her plastic surgery: “I think, in 2016, people should be more accepting of the fact that both famous and non-famous women are having cosmetic procedures. That’s just the reality. And I think more people need to admit that sh-t so it doesn’t have to be so taboo—because we’re all doing it anyway. I wanted to change my nose because I didn’t grow up with a bump on it—that happened when I got smashed in the face with a soccer ball when I was 16. Now I feel like my nose looks the way it’s supposed to look. But for how long do we have to acknowledge that I got a nose job? For the rest of my life?… There’s nothing black and white about beauty or plastic surgery. There are no guarantees that it will fix how you feel about yourself. All of those women [who criticize someone for having surgery]—if they had $10 million in their account tomorrow, I’d dare them not to change one thing about themselves or at least think about it. Yes, there are some women who wouldn’t change a thing, but, for the majority of us, we’d be thinking about that one thing. And there’s nothing wrong with that. I just hope that in 25 years the conversation will shift to where if a woman wants to change her body, all we say is ‘Good for her!’ instead of shaming her for making decisions about her own body.” [From Elle Canada] G—damn it, I found myself agreeing with her at several points in this interview. Do I still think she’s a culturally appropriating douchebag? Sure. But I also see her point – to a certain extent – about how American culture dominates across the world, and how that affected how she raps. Does that explain everything? No, of course not. I also think she should be forgiven for everything involving Azealia Banks, because those moments were not actually about Black Lives Matter or any serious conversation, it was about how Iggy and Azealia absolutely despise each other. Kanye West goes on a Twitter rant about critic Bob Ezrin: justified or nah?

Another day, another Kanye West Twitter rant. What’s consistently interesting to me is that Kanye has no problem with telling the world he’s basically just sitting around Googling himself and obsessively reading the reviews of his album, The Life of Pablo. So there’s this music critic and producer named Bob Ezrin. He’s worked with people like Lou Reed, Pink Floyd, Kiss, Alice Cooper and more. Ezrin is 66 years and he wrote a “scathing” review of The Life of Pablo, claiming in part: “Unlike other creators in his genre like Jay-Z, Tupac, Biggie or even M.C. Hammer for that matter, it’s unlikely that we’ll be quoting too many of Kanye’s songs 20 years from now. He didn’t open up new avenues of public discourse like NWA, or introduce the world to a new art form like Grandmaster Flash, or even meaningfully and memorably address social issues through his music like Marshall, Macklemore and Kendrick. Kanye’s greatest achievements have been in the form of excessive behavior, egomaniacal tantrums and tasteless grandstanding. What he is a true artist at is living his life out loud – and shoving it down the throats of the rest of us whether we give a sh-t or not. He’s like that flasher who interrupts a critical game by running naked across the field. Is that art??? [Via Hip Hop DX] Um… he’s entitled to his opinion, of course, but even I think Ezrin is smoking something if he thinks MC Hammer is a bigger deal to hip-hop than Kanye West. So of course Kanye had to say something. On Twitter. Has anybody ever heard of Bob Ezrin??? What the f-ck does he know about rap…I’m tired of old people that have no connection with anything trying to comment on music! Do something relevant… Please don’t speak on me bro ever again!!! Your kids are ashamed of their dad… Sorry for speaking about kids… but could you imagine if you were Bob Ezrin’s kids…I’m so sorry for them… I will send them free Yeezys to make up for the embarrassment that you have caused your family! Bro you said Macklemore was more important musically than me… no offense to Macklemore, he’s a nice human being! Bob please never speak in public again… you are everything that is wrong with the old guard …it’s guys like you that run companies and don’t invest in Ye even if I’m your kid’s idol!!! Rock and Roll was stolen… Rap was exploited… I made Dark Fantasy and Watch the Throne in one year and wasn’t nominated for either and you know who has 2 albums of the year. Welcome to pop culture!!! Ezrin I truly feel sorry for your friends and family that they have had to suffer an idiot like you for so many years… God bless the fools … all positive vibes! [From Kanye’s Twitter] The statement “I made Dark Fantasy and Watch the Throne in one year and wasn’t nominated for either and you know who has 2 albums of the year” is being called yet another slam at Taylor Swift. Which, sure, she has two albums of the year, which she said at the Grammys this year. But… um, Kanye was just stating a fact? Looking back on it, can you f—king believe that My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy – arguably Kanye’s best album – was genuinely snubbed for Album of the Year? As for the rest of it… it’s what I would expect from Kanye. Photos courtesy of Fame/Flynet.
