Elle Fanning vs. Dakota Fanning: which sister had the best Golden Globes look?

I know I’m making this a comparison post, but here’s a spoiler: I thought both Fanning sisters looked great at the Golden Globes! Elle Fanning and Dakota Fanning went to the Globes separately to promote different projects – Elle was supporting A Complete Unknown, and Dakota was nominated for her supporting role in the Ripley miniseries. I usually think Elle has better style than her sister, but last night, they both killed it.

Elle wore a Balmain ballgown – I thought at first that this was genuinely vintage, but no, it’s a new Balmain based on a vintage look. I’m a tacky B so I love an animal print, and this animal print was so well done. It saved the gown from looking too precious and princessy.

As for Dakota, I’ve seen three different IDs on this beautiful red dress – it’s Versace, or Tony Ward or Dolce & Gabbana. You choose! It looks more like Versace to me, but I’ve been wrong before (and a lot of designers look like Versace these days). She did a perfect red lip with the dress too.

Fallout was nominated for Best Drama this year, which went to Shogun. Ella Purnell was not nominated in the actress category, which was an oversight. She’s mesmerizing in Fallout, and I love her in Yellowjackets too, although that show does not need another season. I think if Fallout was on Netflix or HBO it would be getting a lot more attention because it’s just that good. Aaron Moten is phenomenal too, I would like to see him get a nomination. Plus it’s got Walton Goggins in it! He’s excellent in everything and was nominated for best actor in a drama, which went to Hiroyuki Sanada for Shogun.

Ella was very much the silent screen star in a silver sequin draped v-neck Rabanne gown. We’re going to be seeing her in a lot more shows and movies. She’s a lead actress with character actress range.

Dakota Fanning was nominated for supporting actress in a limited series for Ripley. Her category went to Jessica Gunning for Baby Reindeer. Dakota was lovely in a pale peach strapless Armani. I’ve just seen her this month in this ridiculous movie called The Watchers and in the soapy excellent series The Perfect Couple. She’s so dislikable on Perfect Couple that it shows her incredible range. Her fashion is almost always amazing.

Kathy Bates was part of the villains presenting trio last night, along with Antony Starr and Giancarlo Esposito. She joked that she couldn’t get a date after Misery. I’m really sad that she’s retiring, but I’m excited to see her in the Matlock reboot. She elevates everything she’s in. (Watch Disjointed on Netflix if you haven’t see it yet, it’s goofy funny. Aaron Moten is in it too.) Kathy was also in Armani, in a lovely deep blue sequin gown.

Sarah Paulson was in a cool colorblocked blue, white and black Prada gown with a boxy silhouette. I kind of love this, it’s very cool looking. Sarah wasn’t nominated this year and was there as a plus one for her partner, Holland Taylor. Holland was nominated for supporting actress in a drama which went to Elizabeth Debicki for The Crown.

Eiza Gonzalez was in a pale pink Tamara Ralph gown with a wide bustline and feather boa wrap. This looks a bit cheap to me. She’s so pretty and could pull off so many different looks, but I don’t think this is right for her. Eiza was there to support her Netflix show 3 Body Problem, which was nominated for best drama. (That went to Shogun.) I regret watching that show.

Dakota Fanning: Tom Cruise sends me shoes every year on my birthday

Dakota Fanning has been making the rounds to hype horror movie The Watchers, out today. Dakota was on The Kelly Clarkson Show this week, and she confirmed that she is in the company of a few good men in Hollywood who receive annual gifts from Tom Cruise. Tom and Dakota worked together 20 years ago (I know, I can’t believe it either) on the War of the Worlds remake, and after initially giving a then-11-year-old Dakota a Motorola Razr cell phone for her birthday (it was what she wanted), he has since stuck with gifting her shoes. Every year. You had me at stiletto.

Dakota Fanning has Tom Cruise to thank for her massive shoe collection.

The “Uptown Girls” actress, who turned 30 in February, revealed that Cruise, 61, has gifted her a new pair of shoes every year for her birthday during Wednesday’s episode of “The Kelly Clarkson Show.”

“I find this amazing that every year on your birthday, Tom Cruise still sends you a present on your birthday and says, ‘Happy Birthday.’ That’s so nice,” Clarkson said, adding that they worked together “so long ago.”

Fanning said that she had just turned 11 years old when she first worked with Cruise on their 2005 film, “War of the Worlds,” and to celebrate he had gifted her her “first cell phone.”

“It was a Motorola Razr,” Fanning recalled. “I didn’t have anyone to call but I just wanted a Razr so bad. And I must have been talking about it a lot because that’s what he got me. It was such a great memory.”

However, since then, Cruise has honored her birthday every year by sending a new pair of shoes.

“He always sends me the same thing every year, after the cellphone,” Fanning said, adding that she always “loved shoes” when she was little.

She continued, “I started to be able to fit into really small adult shoes when I was on the ‘War of the Worlds’ press tour so I was very excited about them.

And so, from that birthday on, he always sends me shoes.”

Clarkson called the gift choice “so nice” but “so random.”

“You must have a massive shoe collection brought to you by Tom Cruise,” Clarkson joked, to which Fanning responded with a belly laugh.

Cruise is known for gifting his friends and co-stars with lavish presents constantly; he famously sends more than 300 people a special coconut cake at Christmas time and paid for “Top Gun: Maverick” co-star Glen Powell to get his pilot’s license.

What is the deal with this coconut cake?! Granted, it’s not my personal favorite flavor; I do not like it in my soda, I do not like it in my cake, I do like it in my Thai curry. But somehow coconut seems like a wildly exotic choice for Tom Cruise. For some reason I would’ve pegged him for a yellow cake with chocolate frosting man, instead. Who knows, maybe he doesn’t even eat the cake himself. It’s still very impressive that he’s amassed such a big list of acquaintances and colleagues, and that he consistently sends salutations via thoughtful, substantial gifts. I realize the grunt work is probably relegated to someone on his staff, but he’s still ensuring that a huge number of people get attention from him on holidays and birthdays. The whole thing is very professional, generous, and gracious. Just please help me reconcile how this is the same man who hasn’t seen or acknowledged his daughter in over 10 years.

Dakota Fanning: ‘Having kids is probably more important to me than anything’

Dakota Fanning is the female lead in Netflix’s Ripley, a miniseries adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s The Talented Mr. Ripley. Of course, that was already adapted in a 1999 film starring Matt Damon, Jude Law, Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Gwyneth Paltrow. Dakota plays the Gwyneth role, Marge, and Andrew Scott plays Tom Ripley in what appears to be a captivating performance. If I’m being honest, it sometimes feels like Dakota’s little sister Elle sort of eclipsed her at some point and nowadays, Elle is getting all of the big scripts and important roles. But Dakota works consistently and I’m interested in seeing what she does in this series. Dakota covers the latest issue of Porter, and here are some highlights:

Her big, blowout 30th-birthday party. “I’ve never had a party like it. I’ve had dinners, but this was… a party,” laughs Fanning, who took over the whole of hip Beverly Hills restaurant La Dolce Vita, hired an ice sculpture of legs “for fun”, and wore a red satin corseted Dolce&Gabbana dress. “I was destroyed on Saturday – from the biggest hangover I’ve had in years. But I was icing my head with a huge smile. The past few days, I have felt so light.”

Her 20s were not great: “I wouldn’t say I’m not a happy person, but I do think the late twenties f–k with you. I feel happier and more conscious of what I have, rather than what I don’t have. I know who I am, and the people who know me know who I am, and that’s really all that matters. But there is something about saying that at 30 that feels different to saying it at 28.”

Her 20-year-plus career: “I still have these check-ins with myself to make sure I’m enjoying it. If you can still find the light in moments that are tough, then you’re still enjoying it!”

Filming in Italy for nearly a year at the tailend of the pandemic: “I like being alone and I don’t mind getting acclimated to a place, but I felt really lonely in a specific way. I felt like I was trapped. I’m sure other people can relate… It wasn’t a unique experience, but I definitely went through a rollercoaster on this.” Having seen the results – the finished eight-part, black-and-white series – she has no regrets now. “I feel very rewarded and satisfied having seen the show; it all feels worth it. It’s so different to anything I’ve ever been in.”

On Andrew Scott: “I always hoped our paths would cross. He is so wickedly funny, warm and kind. He’s just a good person. And stunning, obviously. I worship him after working with him.”

She avoided the book & avoided talking to the 1999 film actors: Fanning deliberately steered clear of the 1955 book (“what you’re trying to achieve is what you’ve been given, which is, ultimately, the script”), and she, Scott and Johnny Flynn (who plays her partner Dickie) made a pact to have no contact with anyone who had played versions of their characters. “I was blissfully trying to not think about Gwyneth and her extraordinary beauty and grace!” laughs Fanning of the original, which became known as a stylish cinematic moment. “I’m a huge fan of the film, but it’s so different, I hesitate to even talk about it.”

On wanting children: “Being an actor is a huge part of my identity. I don’t really know who I would be without it. But I also have a desire to set up my life and career so that I always have a choice. Having kids is probably more important to me than anything, even being an actor. If somebody said I had to choose, I would choose having kids. I’m one of those people who has always felt that pull. I don’t know how I’ll feel when that time in my life comes – and how much I’ll want to work. But, because I don’t have that at the moment, I’m trying to take advantage of the adventures now. I’m trying to push myself to keep saying yes to things that make me uncomfortable, to keep going to places for long periods of time that maybe I’m scared to do because – God willing – one day, it won’t be as easy.”

[From Porter]

I love that she threw herself a huge birthday party and really got ripped and started her 30s with a bang. Good for her. Over the years, I’ve noticed that trend among Millennial and older Gen Z women – their 20s always f–king suck. Like, they’re just weighed down with emotional baggage, sh-tty relationships, self-doubt and neuroses, and then they enter their 30s and it’s like they leave all of it behind. It’s a weird little sub-phenomenon, and I’m not saying it’s universal, but a lot of women (famous and unfamous) have described it that way.

As for the film versus the series… my first thought, months ago, was “why does this need another adaptation?” But Andrew Scott is the reason why it needed to be adapted again, because we need to see him as Tom Ripley. But I can’t imagine trying to “redo” one of Gwyneth’s most iconic roles, frankly. Like, I think Gwyneth is an a–hole, but she killed it in Ripley, it was one of her best roles.

Kate Upton surfaces in Emilio Pucci for the FMAs: basic or beautiful?

Kate Upton

Kate Upton attended the Fashion Media Awards on Friday night. She wore a white Emilio Pucci minidress that was pretty basic. Kate rarely brings it on the red carpet even though she’s stunning. I like the skirt’s subtle draping, but the top half looks uncomfortable. The dress needs some tailoring for sure. Those are Bulgari jewels. Kate won the Social Media award for being so active on Twitter and Instagram. The title is bittersweet because Kate probably wants little to do with the internet right now.

This was Kate’s first real outing since her iPhone photos were stolen in the massive celeb hacking ring. Kate has said she’s pursuing legal action. These photos weren’t actually on Kate’s phone (they were on Justin Verlander’s phone), which complicates matters. Kate was definitely the target. Justin sort of (not really) issued a comment on the situation: “I keep my personal life personal. The focus for me is on the Detroit Tigers. I don’t want to take any focus away from this team and what we’re trying to accomplish. We’re in the middle of a pennant race.” Dude is not happy, and I don’t blame him.

Kendall Jenner was at the FCAs to present. She wore Marc Jacobs. These pants remind me of a wicker lawn chair. Kendall recently dropped “Jenner” from her professional name, which means she’s a real model.

Kendall Jenner

This wasn’t a huge fashion event even though it’s part of NYFW. Alessandra Ambrosio wore a sequinned nightie that looks like crushed velvet from a distance. Laverne Cox showed up in a cute skirt that had a cheerleader effect. Coco Rocha looked fabulous in a white top and slit skirt. Dakota Fanning and Christy Turlington had some sort of tent-dress competition. Both of them can do better, but Dakota’s sandals elevate her ensemble to passable.
