Mila Kunis: ‘I’m hoping that Wyatt will learn that the word ‘want’ is not necessary’

Mila Kunis is pregnant with her second child, having welcomed daughter Wyatt into the world back in 2014. Even when she was pregnant the first time, Mila often talked about how she didn’t want her children to grow up to be a—holes, meaning that she doesn’t want to raise “Hollywood kids” with access to anything and everything. She wants to raise polite children who get told “no” a lot, because that’s how she was raised. Personally, I think there’s a 50-50 shot at the kids being a—holes anyway, just because of genetics and those kids are half-Kutcher. I also think Mila Kunis might want to check her ‘tude sometimes because she’s come across as an a—hole a few times, and kids learn it from watching their parents. So as Mila was promoting her new film, Bad Moms, Mila talked more about her parenting method. Mila Kunis is determined to keep her children grounded. The Bad Moms star opened up about her fear of raising a child “who is going to be an a-hole” during an AOL Build session in New York City on Wednesday. “I don’t want to be the person who is responsible for putting that into the world,” the 32-year-old confessed. “My one thing that I’ve always said is I just want my children to have empathy in life. I want my kids to be good kids.” And just to be safe, the Ukrainian-born actress — who shares daughter Wyatt Isabelle Kutcher with husband Ashton Kutcher and is expecting their second child — already has a master plan to avoid raising self-entitled kids in Hollywood. “I figured I’m just going to lie. I feel like that is going to be my tactic. Until the kids are old enough to like search on the Internet, which I feel like I can buy myself a couple of years, I’m just going to go, ‘Mommy and daddy are poor,’” she revealed. “They’re just going to have to suck it up because too bad that’s how I grew up, except we were poor, but it worked!” Mila, who plays the fed up mom in the upcoming movie, added, “My kid will never know what it’s like to not have fresh fruit. My kid will never know what it’s like to not have electricity… I learned at a very early age to not say the word ‘want.’ That was out of my vocabulary. It just didn’t exist, and so I’m hoping that Wyatt one day will learn that the word ‘want’ is not necessary.” [From Hello] Thoughts? It reminds me that she really was brought up with a refugee-mentality. It also reminds me a little bit of Malcolm Gladwell’s books, where he tends to argue that the kids brought up with every advantage in life are often the biggest losers. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if Mila has been reading David and Goliath or Outliers, actually. Long-term, of course “telling the kids that we’re poor” won’t last, but hopefully she’ll be able to teach them that “wanting” something is different than needing something. Wanting something is also different than deserving something or earning something. Photos courtesy of Fame/Flynet and WENN.

Christopher Walken’s cats are his kids: ‘I think a lot of people are like that’

We rarely cover Christopher Walken, although the man is a national treasure. He’s just not controversial at all – he seems like a nice guy, everyone loves him, he loves to dance, and as we can see from this Parade cover, he loves cats. He’s promoting a family film called Nine Lives, where he plays a magical pet shop owner. Kevin Spacey and Jennifer Garner are in the movie too. Weird. Anyway, this whole interview is charming, mostly because he talks about CATS! You can read the full Parade piece here, and here are some highlights: On being a teenage lion tamer: [Sheba, his lioness in a one-ring circus on upstate New York] “was very sweet. She’d walk around and bump up against you leg, just like a nice old cat. I’d wave my whip and she would sit up on her back legs and roll over and do stuff. When we weren’t performing, I used to hang out with her and pet her.” But now he’s against zoos & circuses: “As I get older, I’m very much against zoos and, frankly, animals in captivity. Especially big, wild animals. I wish there wasn’t any such thing as ‘animal acts.’ I wish there wasn’t any such thing as zoos.” His kitty, The Cat: Walken adopted his own feral black-and-white “tuxedo cat” after she showed up on his porch one day—with her babies. “Now I have this basically wild cat that likes to be outside, but she’s friendly. When it gets cold, she comes in.” He calls her simply “the Cat.” And he and Georgianne, who have no children, have always considered their cats as their kids. “I think a lot of people are like that with their pets.” He’s the son of a German immigrant & a Scottish immigrant: “I had a wonderful childhood. Everything: food, house. But my parents didn’t. My parents really did have a hard time where they came from, and they came here and they made this great life. That’s what America is, always and still. I believe people should be able to go and make their lives as they wish. America certainly has always been that for a lot of people. As a kid, I grew up with all sorts of people, different kinds of people. To me, that’s the way it ought to be. Of course, we live in a time of dangerous things. There’s got to be a way around that without making it difficult for everybody.” On his longtime love of cats: “My cats are extremely well taken care of. Frankly, if there’s such a thing as reincarnation, it would be wonderful to come back as my cat. I’m not sure you could do better than that.” [From Parade] But what happened to The Cat’s kittens? Did the Walkens give the kittens away? Or did he bring the kittens inside and now The Cat is the only one who prefers being outside? So many questions. I actually love that he calls his cat The Cat. I did that with my dog too – my (late) puppy had a real name, but I mostly just called him “Puppy” or “Black Dog.” I’m thinking about getting another animal – from a shelter – and I do think I’ll get a cat this time. ‘Ghostbusters’ opened at the box office with $46 million: did you love it or hate it?

I was looking forward to seeing the lady-version of Ghostbusters, mostly because I love the combo of Melissa McCarthy + director Paul Feig, and I think Kate McKinnon is one of the funniest people working today. I went to see it on a lazy Sunday afternoon, and about half-way through the film, I realized that it really wasn’t that funny. Ghostbusters has some giggle-worthy lines and some charm and McKinnon in particular was really trying her damnedest to bring some lightness and quirk to the movie, but even the combined talents of these funny women couldn’t save a clunky script. Those were the biggest issues: pacing, and a script that needed a few more rewrites. They spent too much time earnestly building the world of the “modern” Ghostbusters and there were so many opportunities for some tongue-in-cheek cultural references, anything to shorthand the process and move along the action, but it just didn’t happen. Which isn’t to say that I think it’s a bad movie. It’s not, and if you’re in the mood for something light and silly, I would recommend it. It’s harmless and there are some funny lines and good moments. I feel like Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy’s comedic talents were oddly underutilized as they both tried to play the straight-man to varying degrees. Leslie Jones’ Patty was brought into the story too late (pacing issues, I’m telling you). Chris Hemsworth’s character was the victim of messy writing too, and it felt like they couldn’t decide how stupid they wanted him to be, so his level of intelligence kept changing scene-to-scene. I’m well aware that there is a Battle of the Sexes happening around this film and around the reviews of the film. I was prepared to go to war and rip apart the misogynistic criticism of the film. But after seeing it, the most feminist thing I can say is that the leading ladies were trying and the film’s flaws are not their fault. The fault lies with Paul Feig and Katie Dippold, the co-writers of the clunky script. As for the box office, Sony predicted that it would make between $40-50 million opening weekend, and it performed as expected. Early reports on Sunday put the figure at something like $46 million. It came in second behind The Secret Life of Pets, which… let’s face it, is a massive, crowd-pleasing family film. The problem was that Ghostbusters was TOO scary for really little kids and not funny enough to have box office longevity. It cost $144 million to make Ghostbusters, and I’m sure that the film will break even and likely make the studio some money. But as many analysts pointed out, that might not be good enough. Ghostbusters didn’t need to perform at expectations, it needed to exceed expectations to be considered a “success.” You can read more analysis here. Photos courtesy of ‘Ghostbusters’.

2016 Emmy nominations: who got recognized & who got snubbed?

As previewed yesterday, the 2016 Emmy nominations were finally announced this morning in LA. It feels like people were especially excited about this year’s nominations, likely because there’s always the hope that the Emmy voters might begin to phase in some new shows and new people. And it seems like every year, we’re disappointed with the same old people and same old shows. Is it the same this year? Here are the major nominations, and you can see the full list here at the Emmys main site. This year’s Emmys telecast will be on September 18th on ABC. Outstanding Comedy Series: Black-ish, Master of None, Modern Family, Silicon Valley, Transparent, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Veep Outstanding Drama Series: The Americans, Better Call Saul, Downton Abbey, Game of Thrones, Homeland, House of Cards, Mr. Robot. Outstanding TV Movie: Confirmation, A Very Murray Christmas, All the Way, Luther, Sherlock: The Abominable Bride Outstanding Limited Series: American Crime, Fargo, The Night Manager, Roots, The People Vs. OJ Simpson Lead Actor in Drama Series: Bob Odenkirk, Matthew Rhys, Liev Schreiber, Kevin Spacey, Kyle Chandler, Rami Malek Lead Actress in a Drama Series: Claire Danes, Viola Davis, Taraji P. Henson, Tatiana Maslany, Keri Russell, Robin Wright Actor in a Limited Series or TV Movie: Bryan Cranston, Benedict Cumberbatch, Idris Elba, Cuba Gooding Jr., Tom Hiddleston, Courtney B. Vance Actress in a Limited Series or TV Movie: Kirsten Dunst, Felicity Huffman, Audra McDonald, Sarah Paulson, Lili Taylor, Kerry Washington Lead Actor in a Comedy Series: Anthony Anderson, Aziz Ansari, Will Forte, William H. Supporting Actress in a Drama: Maggie Smith, Lena Headey, Maisie Williams, Constance Zimmer, Maura Tierney, Emilia Clarke [From Emmys.com] Those are the big ones, but you can see the supporting actor noms in Comedy here. I was really worried that Game of Thrones got snubbed in all of the acting categories, but NO! GoT actors flooded the supporting categories which… I agree with that. Dinklage didn’t need another nomination, but he is one of the best actors on the series, so be it. I LOVE that Kit Harington got nominated (SadFace might even win!), and I love that Maisie Williams, Lena Headey and yes, even Emilia Clarke got recognized. I know many of you will love that The Americans finally got some major love, as did Mr. Robot and Master of None. I’m not shocked that Downton Abbey got some noms (even though the last season was all over the place), and I’m not shocked that The Night Manager got some love too – it was a really well-done miniseries. And look, Tom Hiddleston got his first Emmy nomination! The Tiddlesbanging was all worth it, people! Photos courtesy of HBO, FX, WENN.

Kristen Stewart in Chanel at NY ‘Cafe Society’ premiere: milkmaid fug or cute?

Last night was the big New York premiere of Café Society, the Woody Allen film which debuted at Cannes this year. It feels like people are pretty excited about the film for some reason, but not because the reviews are stellar or anything. Café Society is currently sitting at 80% at Rotten Tomatoes, but the reviews I’ve seen are mostly “this is an okay movie.” This isn’t Blue Jasmine, where as soon as critics as saw that film, everyone knew that Cate Blanchett was going to win an Oscar. This is mid-range Woody Allen-as-filmmaker, not the best but not the worst. I think most of the excitement about the film is because of Kristen Stewart and Blake Lively, honestly. Two “fashion girls” on the promotional trail, wearing interesting things. And Kristen’s Chanel dress at the premiere was “interesting,” if “interesting” means “she looks like a hipster milkmaid.” We talk a lot about Alicia Vikander and Jennifer Lawrence’s respective Louis Vuitton and Dior contracts and how those contracts have become rather nightmarish for them, but I really think K-Stew’s Chanel contract should be part of that conversation too. Kristen and Chanel don’t really fit together, right? She was better off with her Balenciaga contract years back. You know what I hate the most about this dress? The giant “C” Chanel-branding on the skirt. WTF? Blake Lively “hid” her bump under this Carolina Herrera flouncy minidress. In some dresses, you sort of forget Blake is even pregnant, and this is one of them. She looks great, she looks cute, etc. But it makes me nervous to see a 6-months-pregnant lady in those high heels and such a short dress. Here’s Woody and Soon-Yi. And finally, here’s Parker Posey. Parker is… amazing. Photos courtesy of WENN, Fame/Flynet.

Rami Malek: It’s harder to talk to new people in LA than it is in New York

I really do listen when you guys request more coverage (or to start covering) new or interesting dudes. I’m still looking for an excuse to write more about Matthias Schoenaerts, who is my latest major crush (and who never gets pap’d). I’d also love to write about Aidan Turner or James Norton, but honestly, we rarely get photos of those guys and there are never any stories about them. Seriously! We’ve had requests for MOAR Rami Malek, and more general love for Mr. Robot over the past year. The first season of Mr. Robot was dark and weird and disturbing, and many believe the show is one of the most interesting things on TV these days, and that Rami Malek, the star, is the Next Big Thing. One of Rami’s biggest fans is Robert Downey Jr. RDJ has name-checked Rami in a few interviews, and RDJ also cited Mr. Robot as one of his favorite TV shows. So guess who interviewed Rami for Interview Magazine? RDJ, of course! Mr. Robot Season 2 just started last night, that’s why Rami is chatting. You can read the full piece here. While it’s a nice read, there’s not a lot of noteworthy stuff here. Malek seems like a nice guy, but he also seems to be living the job, or he just plays his personal life very close to the vest. Some highlights: On RDJ visiting the set of Mr. Robot: “That was amazing. You turned me into a hero when you came to set. I’m not kidding. They were like, “You know him?” “How do you know him?” I knew it was very cool to know you, but the world started paying me more attention on that day on set. Maybe I elaborated on our relationship too much and started fantasizing it was more than it actually was. No, I just told them how close we were and that we hang out, we celebrate holidays together, we watch movies together, all of which is true!” He’s an honorary New Yorker now: “I’ve always felt like I belong there. Growing up [in L.A.] and having a family here was something that I, of course, adored because I was surrounded with that unit. But from the first time I went over there, I felt connected to the way things move, the pace, the ability to strike up a conversation with anybody. I know that people often say it’s hard to talk to people in New York. I think it’s harder sometimes in L.A. But I like the neighborhood vibe, I like getting on the train and going anywhere with that type of speed, having everything at my disposal. The culture, the pace, all of it. I like feeling like I’m in that concrete jungle.” Whether he’ll be typecast because of Mr. Robot: “It’s something that I think about daily. I don’t want people to look back and think, “This character was entirely in his wheelhouse, and he’s probably going to end up playing a bunch of paranoid guys who have conspiracy theories.” Which could easily happen! I’ve had my fair share of 1970s conspiracy movies delivered over. I would love to turn around and do something polar opposite, and that might actually be happening soon. If the right people are involved and the script is just as powerful, I’d like to make some even crazier choices.” [From Interview Magazine] True story: I really did try to get into Mr. Robot during the first season but I just couldn’t. It was too dark and I kept losing track of the evil characters. Maybe I’ll give it another shot, because there are some hardcore devotees. As for Rami being typecast… one of my favorite pieces of trivia about him is that he was in both of the Night At the Museum movies. And he was in Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 2. He won’t be typecast! Rami also has a new profile in GQ – go here to read. Photos courtesy of Josh Olins/Interview Magazine.

Variety critic writes about Renee Zellweger’s face & now everybody’s mad

Last week, the second full-length trailer for Bridget Jones’s Baby dropped. I didn’t cover it because A) I didn’t think people would care and B) I found the second trailer even more depressing than the first trailer. While I am excited to see Renee Zellweger return to a celebrated and beloved role, as I see more of the plot, my excitement dies a little bit. I just think baby-daddy hijinks for a woman in her mid-to-late 40s is a bit much, honestly. Out of all the plot lines, they chose that? I understand that they’re basing it off Helen Fielding’s columns, but maybe they shouldn’t have waited so many years to make this one? Here’s the second trailer: So, yes, I have some complaints. At the heart of those complaints is just plain old disappointment though: the first Bridget Jones movie is as close to perfect as possible. It is arguably one of the greatest romantic comedies of all time. Renee was so good in it that she got an Oscar nom! But 15 years later, we’re getting this mess. And when one critic – Variety’s Owen Gleiberman – expressed his disappointment, he got into a world of trouble. Gleiberman wrote a piece called “Renee Zellweger: If She No Longer Looks Like Herself, Has She Become a Different Actress?” You can read the piece here. It’s supposed to be a “think-piece” about how Zellweger has changed her face so drastically that she’s no longer believable as Bridget Jones, and this guy is personally offended by that. He goes on at length about the pressures of society, and how Zellweger used to be pretty in a normal, believable, girl-next-door sort of way but now she doesn’t look like herself because of her very noticeable plastic surgery and he just goes on and on about it. So, obviously, Owen Gleiberman got slammed all over the place for being sexist and ageist. If we’re saying that this dude never would have written a long-winded, body-policing think-piece about how Russell Crowe is no longer believable as a leading man because of how HE looks and how HE is ageing, I can see that point, and I agree with it. That is sexist and ageist if we’re just going to go on and on about only the actresses. But… I also think that Gleiberman had a (albeit minor) point? If actors and actresses want to drastically change their looks through plastic surgery, so be it. Live and let live, and your body, your choice. But of course people are going to comment. And some of us even made similar comments when we first saw the set photos of Renee-as-Bridget, that “she doesn’t even look like Bridget” and “why does she look so different?” Of course none of us wrote long-winded hot-take think-pieces for Variety analyzing all of the many ways in which her face disappoints us personally. Why is it odd for Renée Zellweger to look slightly different than she did 15 years ago, but not odd for Kate Beckinsale to look identical? — Daniel Fienberg (@TheFienPrint) July 2, 2016 @Variety It's called aging, any by the way, everyone is doing it.
