Johnny Depp wants Amber Heard silenced with a confidentiality agreement

Remember when we thought this summer was going to be full of drama and tragedy from Johnny Depp and Amber Heard? While there was a solid month of drama, by the time their hearing was postponed back on June 17th, the craziness had started to die down. They’re scheduled to appear in court on August 15th to give testimony about the abuse, the restraining order and more. Since mid-June, there’s been relative quiet, which I suspect has been the goal of the lawyers and the court anyway. I’ve been hoping that Depp’s lawyers and Heard’s lawyers have been quietly negotiating some kind of comprehensive settlement. But now I don’t know. Depp’s team has filed new documents aiming to keep Amber and her team silent. Depp’s lawyers are asking the court to put a confidentiality agreement in place so that they can turn over Depp’s financial records without it leaking. Here’s part of the filing: “Johnny does not dispute that Amber is entitled to the majority of the information sought in her discovery requests and subpoenas. He willing to produce the documents necessary for Amber’s evaluation,” the docs read. “He has asked, however, that a confidentiality agreement be executed prior to the production of documents in order to protect the parties’ privacy. This case has been extraordinarily public since its inception. There have been daily articles in the domestic and foreign press about this proceeding and the parties’ lives. Every detail of this action has been chronicled by the media and it has become one of the most heavily publicized celebrity divorces in recent memory.” Thus, Depp’s team argues, “Amber’s need for financial information to resolve this case is distinct from the public’s appetite for information about celebrity divorces. Yet Amber has inexplicably refused to sign any agreement to maintain confidentiality in this action. Johnny has proposed two different versions of a confidentially agreement and has expressed his willingness to consider revisions and/or an alternate agreement drafted by Amber’s counsel.” The documents reveal that Depp—to no avail—asked Heard to sign a confidentiality agreement on May 27, 2016, noting that many media outlets have sited “sources close to Amber” in their coverage of the divorce. In fact, Depp’s lawyer, Laura Wasser, pointed out one TMZ article in which she believes Heard’s attorney, Samantha Spector, leaked information to TMZ “We agree to your proposal that ‘both sides would do everything in their power to prevent any further publicity and/or media disclosures about this matter, the case and the parties’ without exception,” Wasser states. “On 6/10 TMZ posted a story which contained specific provisions of the verbal settlement offer made to you…Not only did you not comply with your proposed agreement, you violated provisions.” The documents also indicate that the two teams tried to settle in mid-June into order to “avoid media exposure” and “resolve the matter amicably,” and that Depp was willing to use the mediator Heard proposed. However, they failed to schedule a meeting. Now, as Heard proceeds to request more information, Depp continues to press for confidentiality. “Johnny is merely trying to protect the documents and information Amber seeks from unwarranted disclosure to the media and other individuals not involved,” the docs read. [From E! News] Does anyone else think it’s a bit rich for Depp’s lawyer to cry foul about Amber’s team leaking to TMZ? Throughout May and June, Team Depp was leaking to TMZ on a daily basis. TMZ was running pro-Depp stories consistently, full of information that only people deep in Depp’s camp would know. While I don’t doubt that Amber’s team has leaked information to E!, People and TMZ as well, turnabout is fair play. I also think it’s interesting that Depp wants such a tight rein on his financial information specifically. In the past month, Depp has been making some strange financial moves, like selling his Basquiat paintings and putting his French chateau up for sale. Hm… Photos courtesy of Fame/Flynet.

Donald Trump’s VP announcement for Mike Pence went exactly as expected

The gossip around Donald Trump’s VP announcement is probably the funniest and/or most terrifying thing you’ve heard this week. Donald Trump has had months to put together a shortlist of VP candidates, but I get the feeling that he and his people half-assed it until the last minute, threw together a list a few weeks ago, and then Trump just went with the guy he despised the least, which was Mike Pence, the governor of Indiana. Pence is a hardline conservative Republican with an appallingly terrible record – go here to see more about that. First, Trump told media outlets that he would announce his VP on Friday. Then he postponed the announcement just hours after the tragedy in Nice, France. Trump announced Pence with a tweet on Friday anyway. On Saturday morning, Trump and Pence made their big, formal joint event and announcement. More on that in a moment. Completely legit media outlets are reporting that Trump had buyer’s remorse almost as soon as he called Pence to tell him that he was the guy on Thursday night. Sources claim Trump was trying to get out of it almost immediately. Which led to this tweet: Look forward to introducing Governor Mike Pence (who has done a spectacular job in the great State of Indiana). My first choice from start! — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 16, 2016 As many have pointed out, “My first choice from the start” is not something presidential candidates feel the need to say out loud if their VP choice really was the first choice. As in, don’t run if no one is chasing. As in, why bother lying about something like that? The Trump campaign also launched their new logo, which is absolutely obscene (and hilarious). the Trump-Pence logo looks like a forbidden sex act that Pence would definitely not be OK with pic.twitter.com/sZxVv3E32h — Matt Negrin (@MattNegrin) July 15, 2016 This logo accurately represents what Trump Pence will do to America. pic.twitter.com/HQisP8QVzb — Rep. Alan Grayson (@AlanGrayson) July 15, 2016 Breaking the mattress of America. pic.twitter.com/M4Cq62YS2c — Full Frontal (@FullFrontalSamB) July 15, 2016 About 24 hours after launching the Trump-penetration logo, the Trump campaign was already abandoning it. Amazing. And then we finally get to the big press conference on Saturday in New York. Mike Pence flew in to New York and it was going to be his big debut on the national stage. If only Donald Trump could have just stopped talking about himself long enough to properly introduce Pence. If only the introduction song playing before Trump came out wasn’t the Rolling Stones’ “You Can’t Always Get What You Want.” I’m not even joking. Trump came out and talked about himself for a while, even saying at one point, “One of the big reasons I chose Mike is party unity, I have to be honest.” He didn’t choose Pence for the good of the country, or because Pence a strong leader who would be ready to take on the presidency on Day 1. Trump chose Pence for petty political-party reasons. Here’s the speech: Ezra Klein at Vox wrote one of the most scathing articles about this announcement – go here to read. Suddenly, it does feel like some in the media are starting to wake up from their dream-like state, realizing that this whole thing has become an utter nightmare. This whole VP-selection moment feels a lot like John McCain choosing Sarah Palin back in 2008. Not that Pence is Palin-esque (time will tell), but that Trump and his team half-assed one of the most important functions of a presidential campaign: to choose a competent, reasonable and thoroughly vetted vice presidential candidate. This is exactly what Trump will be like as president. When someone shows you who they are, believe them. Photos courtesy of WENN.

Bastille Day Attack: Truck Crashes Into Crowd in France, 75 Killed

Horrifying news out of France today: At least 75 people were killed late when a man driving a large truck drove into a large crowd in Nice that had gathered to celebrate Bastille Day. According to The Associated Press, via a witness who was on hand for the heinous act, a driver plowed directly into a throng of citizens prior to getting out of the vehicle with a gun, firing away in all directions. The culprit was shot to death, authorities have confirmed.  At least 100 people were injured in the slaughter, the same authorities have also said. “There was carnage on the road,” Wassim Bouhlel, a Nice native, told The Associated Press. “Bodies everywhere.”  Another individual who was present told Fox News that cops did, indeed, shoot and kill the gunman; his name has not yet been released. Various photos, meanwhile, depict police trucks riddled with bullets, a result of a gunfight between the suspect and police. CNN reports that the tractor-trailer drove for two kilometers along the pavement of the Boulevard des Anglais, the main street in Nice, taking out pedestrians along the way. Regional President Christian Estrosi says police discovered firearms, explosives and grenades in the truck after the shooter was taken out. “This is the worst tragedy in the history of Nice with more than 70 victims already reported,” Estrosi Tweeted this evening. Another person on the scene told the Telegraph that the area was “absolute chaos” and that there were cops “flooding the streets, including anti-terrorism officers.” And then there was a local reporter who also spoke to The Telegraph, stating the following: “People ran, there was panic. He drove onto the promenade and plowed into the crowd. There is a huge amount of blood and without doubt a lot of people have been hurt.” Awful, scary, incomprehensible stuff. Bastille Day marks the storming of the Bastille in 1789. It is a bank holiday in France, with restaurants and hotels especially crowded with revelers. Soon after news of the tragedy went public, President Barack Obama issued a statement condemning the attack, saying: “We stand in solidarity and partnership with France, our oldest ally, as they respond to and recover from this attack.” We’ll update this sad story as more news breaks. Our hearts go out to the families and loved ones of the victims.

Jennifer Garner & Ben Affleck ‘making it work,’ not sure if they will divorce

When Ben Affleck gave his kind of slurry arguably drunk sports show interview, many of you noticed that he referred to Jennifer Garner as his “wife.” He was telling the same narrative we’ve heard from him before about how Jennifer Garner made his career possible by holding down the homefront, which is nice because it shows he doesn’t take that part of their relationship for granted. I didn’t put much stock in Affleck calling Garner his wife, but it may have meaning. ET Online has a pretty long story they’re billing as an exclusive, with quotes that they’re “making it work” and the detail that their source does not know if these two will ever file for divorce. It’s carefully worded, but it hints at a reconciliation. Three weeks ago we heard that Garner was “adamant” that she would divorce Affleck. Does this mean that he’s still holding out hope or are they back together? It’s been almost one year since Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner announced their split, and Wednesday marks the 11th anniversary of their wedding. However, while the two are separated, they still remain legally married. “They still have not officially filed paperwork for a divorce,” a source tells ET, adding they “don’t know if that will ever happen…” Affleck also recently referred to Garner as “his wife” in an interview on HBO. They’re “making it work,” the source notes about the pair, and as the months have flown by, the estranged couple has settled into a new normal of co-parenting and “the year of wine,” as Garner put it in a February sit-down with Vanity Fair… Affleck didn’t travel too far following their separation. Reports swirled shortly after they pulled the plug on their longtime romance that the 43-year-old actor was still a presence at their family home. “He still lives on the property in Brentwood, California, but in separate living quarters,” another source tells ET. There are no boundaries between them when it comes to their kids. The proud parents have been seen out and about together as a family on countless occasions. So much so that it has sparked reconciliation rumors, especially after their family trip to Paris and London in May while Affleck filmed Justice League. But will it happen? A source close to Affleck tells ET, “They’re in a good place and co-parenting the best they can.” [From ET Online]] So are these two still telling the press every up and down in their relationship or did ET ask and get this kind of non-committal answer? ET had another story a couple of weeks ago saying that they were “fine.” Whatever is going on, The tipster who sent us this story also pointed to this story in the Daily Mail in which Affleck was seen visiting a “friend’s” place in LA over the weekend. (Those photos are below.) He has wet hair so he may have been going for personal training or a massage or something. People has a competing story that Ben doesn’t want the divorce but Jen is “adamant” about going through with it. It sounds just like their story from earlier in June. It was a year yesterday since they announced the divorce and then dealt with nannygate: A friend of Garner’s says that “Ben still doesn’t want the divorce” but that Garner has denied reconcilation rumors to pals. She “doesn’t seem to mind at all that [the divorce] is not finalized,” but “she seems adamant about going through with it,” the friend says. “She did have the best time in Europe with Ben and the kids,” says her friend. “She seemed to enjoy spending time with Ben again.” “They have a lot of admiration and respect for each other,” adds a source close to the couple. The couple are continuing to stay together at their family home when they’re both in L.A. as Affleck flies back and forth to London for filming. Another source close to the couple told PEOPLE recently that “nothing has changed” in the relationship: “They’re still all about putting the kids first.” [From People] So this seems to be the new normal for them. I mean this kind of tentative relationship along with competing stories in the press about whether they’re getting back together or not. As long as we’re talking about them, right? Radar reported that Jennifer’s mom and dad, who live in Charleston, WV where she grew up, have had their home destroyed by the devastating flooding there and are staying in a hotel. They state that Jen is planning a fundraiser to help, and she has also publicly asked for support for Save The Children, with whom she’s worked in the past and which is doing relief work on the ground. Incidentally, Radar claims to have an exclusive interview with Jen’s dad which “reveals how she won [Ben] back for good.” That’s what they write in the title, but all Mr. Garner says is that he is “awful proud” of Jen and “would prefer not to comment on her plans. Any news will come from her and not from us.” This is Jennifer Garner outside a business meeting. Like Ben, she also has wet hair. Credit: FameFlynet

Anderson Cooper takes down Florida’s Attorney General a second time

After an emotional statement on Monday’s Anderson Copper 360 about the tragedy in Orlando, on Tuesday Cooper grilled Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi over her anti-gay record. Mainly, he questioned her championing herself as a voice for the LGBTQ community by establishing a hotline for spouses when Bondi had actively worked to limit gay rights. Bondi’s administration had used anti-gay rhetoric to fight same sex marriage in court, and Anderson brought it up to her. Bondi grew flustered and the interview, which you can watch here, ended professionally but tersely. After the segment aired, Bondi called in to WOR 710 radio and blamed Cooper for misleading her about the interview’s objective and editing her in a bad light. One problem, Cooper had his receipts and showed them on air that night. Fighting words. Anderson Cooper responded on Wednesday, June 15, to Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi’s claims that their interview in the wake of the Orlando nightclub shooting, which aired live on CNN the previous day, was edited to portray her in a bad light. “She’s either mistaken or she’s not telling the truth,” the CNN host said on his show, Anderson Cooper 360. “Let’s be real here. Ms. Bondi’s big complaint seems to be that I asked in the wake of a massacre of gay and lesbian citizens about her new statements about the gay community and about her old ones.” Bondi claimed during a radio interview with WOR 710 in New York on Wednesday that she was led to believe that the interview with Cooper would focus on donation scams affecting the victims and their families. Instead, “when he posted the clip [online], he cut out the entire first portion that discussed people donating to legitimate funds,” she said, and insisted that all the interview did was “encourage anger and hate.” (CNN.com later posted the interview online in its entirety.) “There’s a time and place for everything, but yesterday wasn’t the time nor the place in front of a hospital when we could have been helping victims,” Bondi added. “For the record, my interview was not filled with any anger,” Cooper responded on air on Wednesday. “My job is to hold people accountable, and if on Sunday a politician is talking about love and about embracing ‘our LGBT community,’ I don’t think it’s unfair to look at their record and see if they have ever actually spoken that way publicly before, which I’ve never heard her say.” “The fact is Attorney General Bondi signed off on a 2014 federal court brief that claimed married gay people would ‘impose significant public harm.’ Harm. She spent hundreds of thousands in taxpayer money, gay and straight taxpayers’ money, trying to keep gays and lesbians from getting the right to marry,” he continued. “Good people can and do disagree on that issue — everyone has the right to their own opinion, thank goodness — but Miss Bondi is championing right now her efforts to help survivors. With the very right which allows gay spouses to bury their dead loved ones — that’s a right that would not exist if Miss Bondi had her way. I think it’s fair to ask her about that. There is an irony in that.” [From Us Magazine] I am so tired of the “time and place” argument to waylay discussions about gun and LGBTQ rights. I think when you can point to the result of these antiquated views and say, “that, right there,” it is the perfect time to hold a dialogue. Bondi did much more damage with her radio response than she did in the initial interview. Even without Cooper countering her every claim, she acted against her own argument that it wasn’t the time or place. She asserted Cooper stirred up anger and hate but she missed the point, Cooper’s questions were borne of the anger from the LGBTQ community. She could have admitted that her stance has changed and discussed what her office would do going forward but instead decided to call in for a proper pout to a radio station. Cooper said he does not like to make himself the story but he felt strongly about addressing her claims. I’m very glad he did. Just like Connecticut’s Rep Chris Murphy’s filibuster to get gun legislation on the floor, we need to keep up the pressure to have a real discourse that brings about a solution to mass shootings. Ruby Rose had just performed at Pulse nightclub: ‘nothing I can do but cry’

As most of you unfortunately know by now, a man whose name I will not dignify by writing walked into the Orlando nightclub Pulse early Sunday morning and committed a heinous act, the worst mass shooting in US history. Among those for whom this hit far too close to home was actor and DJ Ruby Rose. Ruby is a strong voice and advocate for the LGBTQ community and had just recently done a gig at Pulse. Ruby Rose has shared an emotional social media post after the horrific Orlando mass shooting, revealing she performed in the city where 50 people were slain only last week. “Woke up in tears to hear the news about Orlando. Devastated, heartbroken, sick,” the Aussie actor and DJ posted on Facebook and Instagram. “I played there last Friday and last night I performed after Pride in LA. From the DJ booth you see laughter, love, dancing freedom and beautiful people living their lives not harming anyone. It’s one of the beautiful things to see from stage.” “This horrific tragedy has me on my knees at the mercy of a greater power to ask the simple question of ‘When will this end’ … I’m praying for Orlando, I’m crying for Orlando and I am there with you in spirit sending my love and strength.” [From Page Six] I cannot begin to imagine what it would be like for Ruby to have been in that location, celebrating one day and waking up to find out that about a week later 50 lives were taken there. I had a loose connection to the UCLA shooting earlier this month and the chill of having proximity to tragedy is hard to shake. The heartbreak from this tragic event is far reaching. J.K.
