Blake Shelton claims Gwen Stefani ‘saved my life’: sweet or melodramatic?

Well, I hoped for a “Gwake Break,” but it doesn’t seem to be happening anytime soon, as the couple have continued to ride the publicity train for their new duet. Blake taped an interview for CMT’s Hot 20 Countdown. He told the show’s host, Katie Cook, that the staggering number of views on his debut performance of “Go Ahead and Break My Heart” with Gwen Stefani on The View is due to the “media craze around us being together.” I think a lot of it had more to do with people’s curiosity to hear the California-born ska/rocker sing with the country crooner than anything else. Blake also had this to say about his new relationship: “It’s not something anybody could’ve seen coming besides God I guess because it doesn’t look like it would make sense. All I can tell you is that it does. It just makes the most perfect sense for us and where we’re at in our lives. I tell people all the time, ‘Gwen saved my life last year.’ She did. I think she’d tell you something similar about me.” “This thing just happened because of some things we were going through. Even coming into [her] second season [working on] The Voice, I didn’t even really know her that well. All of a sudden this thing just happened because of some things we were going through and it saved my life, period.” [From CMT/E!] Wow. Chart-topping country hits, a successful TV show, adoring fans, but it’s Gwen who “saved his life?” That’s kind of a bold statement. I guess Blake is starting to run out of talking points – which he should by now. Blake continued to talk about his relationship on Thursday’s TODAY, saying out loud what a lot of people were thinking when he got together with Gwen. It’s a little weird. We could not be, on paper, any more different. I mean, I’m a country singer and she’s a ska, rock, pop, whatever it is…and it’s just an odd idea. But man, it’s a lot of fun. I’ve gotta be honest about that. [From TODAY/US] As he mentioned backstage after the song’s debut, Blake again told CMT (and TODAY…sheesh) that he wrote the song mainly to woo Gwen and was relieved that she liked it so much. Gwen admitted on an appearance on Chelsea Handler’s talk show on Wednesday that her biggest fear about the tune was, as she put it, “Whoa what if I don’t like it, huge turn off!” Fortunately for Gwake, that wasn’t the case. But please you two, give it a rest already. We get it, you’re both over the moon about each other and your duet was well-received. I just think when you talk about your relationship this much, something about it just comes off as a touch of “trying too hard-itis.” Or is it just me? Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton debut their new duet: magic or tragic?

Reality TV and music’s current “cute couple,” Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton, used the show that brought them together, The Voice, to debut their first of what I can assume will be many duets. “Go Ahead and Break My Heart” is from Blake’s upcoming album, If I’m Honest, which drops on May 20. If watching couples make goo-goo eyes at each other for 4 minutes makes you nauseous, I’d recommend you don’t watch the clip. If you are a fan of the couple or of love, give it a peek. Gwen’s hair looks amazing and the top of the gown is lovely – she loses me at the sheer part around her legs, as it makes the dress look unfinished. Blake’s looking pretty handsome though. As much of a cynic as I can be about the fleeting romances of celebrities, it really does appear that these two are smitten with each other. Their voices blend together better than I would have thought, but Gwen definitely doesn’t have a voice for country. The version on Blake’s album is better than the live one, because of recording studio wizardry, but Gwake’s chemistry kind of sells the song in the clip. During the taping of the segment, Voice judge Pharrell Williams quipped “Aww, you guys look so cute,” but there didn’t appear to be much enthusiasm coming from the other judges. I do love how you don’t see one iota of excitement from Christina Aguilera and not much more than polite head nodding from Adam Levine. He added, “We were a little nervous at first as to how people would receive it, because it’s not written in a traditional way at all.” He went on to tell Extra: Originally, when I started the song, I was just, I was only trying to impress her, you know, just trying to write her a song to get her excited about me, and I sent her the song half-finished and she wrote the other half of the song, so it’s such a 50/50 emotionally-invested thing. [From Extra] I guess music is the grown-up equivalent to the old “Do you like me? Check ‘yes’ or ‘no’.” notes we used to pass around in school. I do have to admit that watching the clips of Blake, I never realized how downright charming he is. I kind of have a little crush on him now. I can see how Gwen fell for him. Voice showrunner Mark Burnett took some time away from promoting his upcoming remake of Ben Hur (WHY?) he produced to share his thoughts on the couple, telling ET, I was there in those dark moments because we were working together at the time, it was their private lives but it spills over. And then I said to Blake and Gwen, ‘Imagine in your darkest moments if someone showed you a videotape of right now, the love you have, wouldn’t it be great?’ And they’re both smiling. Debuting the song on Monday’s show has already paid off, as the single is already at the top of the charts on iTunes, right behind Justine Timberlake’s obscenely catchy new single “Can’t Stop the Feeling.” The release of the single seemed to be news to Blake, who tweeted “It’s out? Prince Harry is having the time of his life in Florida for the Invictus Games

The Invictus Games officially begin today, but Prince Harry (King Dirty Ginger Snap) has already been in Florida for days. On Friday and Saturday, Harry was participating in the welcoming events, holding babies, kissing puppies, shaking hands with veterans and generally being lovely and adorable. Interestingly enough, I think Poor Jason (the PR guy for the Cambridges and Harry) is with Harry in Florida. Just before Jason released a slew of lovely Harry photos, the KensingtonRoyal Twitter released some information about upcoming events involving Prince William. Because of course Harry can’t just have a moment. Speaking of Harry’s moment, I loved this story from People Magazine: Over breakfast at the Warrior Games in Colorado in 2013, Prince Harry turned to friend David Wiseman and said: “We’re going to bring this idea back to the U.K. and make it massive.” Now, two years on from the first Paralympic-style Invictus Games in London, the excitement is building for second event, which will kick off in Orlando, Florida, on Sunday. “It’s going to be such a fantastic atmosphere which the athletes will draw from,” U.K team captain Wiseman says. While Harry’s hopes for the UK version were big “if he had said there would be the First Lady and former President Bush at a games in Orlando a few years later I would have said ‘wow,’ ” Wiseman adds. “The world is watching this and hopefully lots of people can drawn inspiration from the amazing men and women competing in sport here. There’s going to be a lot of razzmataz.” Wiseman, who qualified for four swimming races in preliminary races on Saturday, was speaking to reporters after Harry had visited the swimming pool. “He has been knocking around for the last couple of days. He has a good, natural affinity with the veterans and service personnel. He belongs to that community and he can just rock up and whoever you are can stand here having a chat with the competitors. It’s natural, it’s genuine.” [From People] What I enjoy is that Harry always gives credit where it’s due: the American Warrior Games were his inspiration, and he wanted to make it bigger and more inclusive to veterans around the world. And Wiseman is right, Harry is natural and genuine. Always, but especially around veterans. And children. And puppies. And everyone else. Prince Harry got the Queen involved with trash-talking America ahead of Invictus

Many of you already discussed this in Friday’s KING HARRY post, but it’s worth dedicating a full post to this. The Invictus Games are almost here, and this year’s games are being held in Florida. Considering First Lady Michelle Obama’s dedicated work with military families and veterans, she’s been all over the Invictus Games and she and Prince Harry have gotten quite close in the past few years in particular. Even when the Obamas came for dinner at Kensington Palace, Michelle and Harry were the only ones who greeted each other as intimate friends (Harry couldn’t help but go in for a kiss, right in front of the PRESIDENT!). The point is that Michelle and Harry enjoy each other. Michelle is one of us, I suspect: she sees Harry as the dirty-sexy, roguish ginger snap that we see too. So, on Friday, the First Lady and Pres. Gwen Stefani: divorce was ‘the worst thing that can happen to me besides death’

Gwen Stefani has a long, extensive interview with LGBT publication Pride Source promoting her new album. She’s asked a lot of questions about her relationship with the gay community, and about being a woman in the male-dominated music industry. To be fair to Stefani, when she talks about her “gay friends” or about one of her sons potentially coming out, she’s asked specifically about that by the journalist, in those words. She’s not bringing it up out without context. The quotes from Stefani which are getting the most press were when she said that she would be “blessed” if one of her sons came out. Again, she was asked what she would do in this instance. Writer Chris Azzopardi knows how to get a good quote. Stefani was extremely chatty too; she said several times that she’s horrible at keeping secrets. She didn’t exactly dish the dirt on her relationship ending, she only described how hurt she was. She did suggest that she was having problems in her relationship around 2013 and frames it around her own personal spiritual journey, which she credits with giving her the tools to survive her divorce. On embarrassing her kids and her divorce I can’t talk about them because they’re gonna be 15 and like, “Mom, why did you say that? You’re embarrassing me!” I have to think a little bit about that now. But I just think… I don’t know how else to be. Everybody knows what happened to me. I got a divorce. It’s the worst thing that can happen to me besides death. Her divorce was devastating My whole life all I wanted to do was be a mother and a wife… In February (2015), my family fell apart. It was devastating. I didn’t know what to do. It was a real big secret, but as I just explained, I’m not good with that. I tried everything to fix it. By June (2015), I went into the studio and started writing. I was praying. I had already started on a spiritual journey when I got pregnant with Apollo (in 2013) that was sort of like, “Wow, really? I’m gonna be blessed with a baby… now?” That was a miracle. It just started me on this spiritual journey and thank God it started then because I was prepared when I had the tragedy. I had that nest of spirituality in me. On criticism of letting her boys paint their nails and dye their hair Of course everyone’s gonna have their perspective and their opinion, and I know what’s real and what’s honest and true, and that’s really all that matters to me and all that’s important. So, it doesn’t really bother me. As long as my boys are protected and happy and I’m spending quality time with them, whether it’s doing sports or doing nails, it really doesn’t matter. Q: “What would you say to one of your boys if they came out to you one day?” I would be blessed with a gay son. You know that I would feel blessed about that. I just want my boys to be happy and healthy, and I just ask God to guide me every day to be a good mother because it is not an easy job. I’ve been lucky enough to have such a blessed life. I’ve been able to travel the world and meet so many different kinds of people. And it doesn’t really matter if you’re gay, straight, whatever. There are good and bad people, and I would be happy. I just want my kids to be happy, and whatever journey God gives them is their journey. On how it’s better now for gay people growing up, she calls “The Danish Girl” “The Dutch Girl” I do know that it’s gotta be difficult to be the alternative, to not be the mainstream, or to be different, if you want to call it that. I feel like it’s less and less (like that) these days, and it’s hard for me to understand because it doesn’t seem different or weird or anything anymore because it just seems so normal to me. I just saw that movie… what was it… “The Dutch Girl”? “The Danish Girl”…? Yeah, “The Danish Girl.” I think what was so incredible about that movie was just – that was so long ago. I mean, can you imagine back then? Whoa. Now it feels like nothing anymore. [From Pride Source] Her heart’s in the right place, even if she comes across as rather ditzy at times. The entire interview is long and well worth reading if you’re interested in her at all. Stefani references God and feeling “blessed” multiple times, as she’s done in past interviews. She peppers so many religious references into the conversation that she sounds like she’s from the south. It makes me wonder if that’s Blake Shelton’s influence, because Stefani was raised Catholic in California. I’m a former Catholic too and in my experience we don’t bring up God that much in everyday conversation. As for the end of her relationship with Gavin Rossdale, she describes it as a tragedy and like a death, which she’s said before. Stefani claims that she has a confessional nature but she seems to be hinting around the details behind her divorce, like she’s trying to keep some things from the public but is just dying to tell us. She may be doing that with the lyrics to her songs. “Red Flag” is about a one-sided relationship imploding “Big mistake, red flags fly… you know how to blow up” while “Naughty” definitely seems to be about Rossdale. Read these lyrics, “You did it, and then you hid it…The naughty, naughty things you do. I think there’s something that you might perhaps forgot to say. Locked in the closet but it never goes away.” That closet line sounds telling right? This is What The Truth Feels Like is currently number one on Billboard’s Hot 200 charts. Ben Higgins WILL pop the question on The Bachelor season finale Monday. That much is clear. But he's IN LOVE with TWO women, so … Will it be Jojo Fletcher or Lauren Bushnell getting asked?! The Bachelor spoilers shed light on that if you care for that insight. If not, man, the preview below is a feast for the overly-edited senses! “I’m sitting here on a bathroom floor," Ben tells one of his two finalists around the halfway point. "And … I love you. I’m in love with you.” “But do you love her too?” she asks. “Yes.” Oh s–t, this is about to get REAL. When Ben says he put his fiancee through hell, we now understand a little bit more about what he means … as she has to watch this. In order to fully invest himself in one of these two AMAZING women, Ben brilliantly observes, he will have to say goodbye to the other. How will he handle that? Not well, it looks like. He is a lost man right now, he assures us, unaware of what comes next or how to react. The fallout could be epic. Not just for the drama of who Ben Higgins will choose, or how the woman whose heart he breaks will respond. It can't be easy to hear that he was falling just as hard for someone else, and some fans have theorized that his engagement is in peril. That's just conjecture, however. The show's track record is so poor, we would not assume any happily-ever-after scenarios, but we wouldn't rule them out. Not yet anyway. What we can tell you is that this is a man fighting back tears when he talks about the woman he DOES plan to propose to, and … wow. Is it dusty in here now too?!
