How much money is Duchess Kate spending on clothes for her 6-day tour?

In this post, I’m using photos of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge from their last big overseas trip, the Australian and New Zealand tour in 2014. I’m doing that because we’re going to talk about clothes, more specifically the clothes Kate will be wearing for the India-Bhutan tour, which doesn’t start until April 10. We still don’t know which designers Kate will be using for the tour, but several outlets are running previews and I guess we should start to get excited about Kate-in-a-sari. Do you think that will even happen? I would love to see her in a sari, but I think it’s far more likely that she would wear a British Indian designer, something with Indian flavor but very much a formal gown. You never know though, maybe Kate will whip out a sari. The Telegraph did a big story on what Kate will wear, but there isn’t much new info here. She’ll take 12-15 outfits for six days, she’ll have “daytime dresses and evening gowns” and hopefully at least one pair of jeggings, I’m assuming. Kate’s team – including her secretary Rebecca Deacon – did a “rehearsal trip” to India to scout locations, take photos and prepare the color story of what Kate will be wearing. Still, a royal source insists: “She is in charge of it herself and takes an interest in paying tribute to the host country with nods to their culture and local style on at least a few of the engagements. The important factor on this tour is the heat, so that’s an issue that plays a big part in the choice of outfits.” She’s likely “commissioned” some special pieces as well as looking for some stuff online. She will be traveling with Natasha Archer – who acts as her stylist (very poorly, I might add) – and Amanda Cook Tucker, who is her hairstylist/wiglet tamer. No one has any idea how much Kate is spending on clothes for this tour, but I think we can assumed that she’s easily spending $40,000 or more. Meanwhile, the Daily Mail’s gossip girl (The Girl About Town) had this interesting piece of news: The Duchess of Cambridge is to cement her title as the Queen of Norfolk by hosting a £10,000-a-head ultra-exclusive party for 80 members of the county’s high society. The lavish gala will be held at Houghton Hall, Palladian stately home of the Marquess and Marchioness of Cholmondeley, and a short drive from Kate and Wills’ Anmer Hall. Kate’s name features on the invitation and the party is in aid of the East Anglia Children’s Hospice, the charity of which Kate became a patron in 2012. Tickets start at £6,000 per head and those who pay £10,000 are invited to stay at Houghton with the Marquess and Marchioness of Cholmondeley after the party on June 22, ten days after the Queen’s 90th birthday celebrations. The ball will include a champagne reception, a lecture by writer Anthony Horowitz, live jazz, a magician, and food by top chefs including Tom Kerridge. The event is another sign that Kate will host more charitable events after Her Majesty turns 90 and will be good practice for Kate the working Royal, with an impressive list of grandees attending the proceedings in Houghton’s marble-clad Stone Hall. [From The Daily Mail] Since I’m an Anglophile, I know that “Cholmondeley” is pronounced “chumly” for British reasons. While I always applaud the very idea of Kate going to work and raising money for charity, of course the only way they’re getting Kate out of the house is by getting her to attend a fancy party full of posh people. I understand that is the definition of modern charitable fundraising, so why is it like pulling teeth to get Kate to attend/co-host charity fundraisers? The Walking Dead finale: who met Lucille and who was safe? (spoilers)

Spoilers from last night’s finale of The Walking Dead Last night’s hour and a half finale of The Walking Dead seemed to epitomize all that was wrong with this season. There was a lot of filler and some genuinely tense moments, but it ended on a cliffhanger that left fans frustrated. At the end we got to see Negan, the big bad from the Saviors, played by the incredible Jeffrey Dean Morgan. He was definitely scary but more of a sympathetic character than I was expecting. Negan’s long speech to the crouching Alexandrites made sense to me. I especially liked how he explained that this was retribution for killing his men. “When I sent my people to kill your people for killing my people, you killed more of my people. Not cool.” He also said that he didn’t want to kill them, he just wanted them to work for him, which again sounded reasonable in context. As Morgan explained on Talking Dead afterwards, Rick’s people had killed over 20 Saviors, so Negan selecting just one person to kill was in no way extreme. The ending looked extreme to viewers though, especially when we were given just a few clues as to whom Negan actually killed. I can’t believe producers used that cheap tactic, yet again, after leaving Glenn’s fate up in the air for several episodes earlier this season. During the final scene at first I thought that Negan had selected Carl to kill, but he was actually instructing his men to cut out Carl’s eye and feed it to Rick if anyone tried to stop him. That means that Carl and Rick are safe. Highlight the text below to see speculative spoilers from the comics: In the comics, Glenn meets his end here, but we know that WD producers don’t follow the comics and Glenn was at the end of the line. It looked like Negan selected someone more in the middle. It may have been Abraham, who died earlier in the comics from a crossbow to the head by the Saviors. Denise died on the show in the same way that Abraham died in the comics, so producers may have subbed Abraham’s death for Glenn’s here. The rest of last night’s episode was just ok. I’m beginning to feel sorry for Morgan (the character, played by Lennie James), because his entire story arc with Carol just felt like filler. Morgan’s otherwise interesting backstory took up an entire episode earlier this season when we were waiting to hear what happened to Glenn. (Incidentally, that episode was also written by Scott M. Gimple, who was responsible for this one. Eff that guy.) Carol looked to be mortally injured when we last saw her, but Morgan and Carol coincidentally then ran into a couple of good looking nice guys in padded costumes. That seemed mildly ridiculous to me, like of course they’re going to fix up Carol and they’re going to be allies. Also ridiculous: father Gabriel being put in charge of Alexandria like he’s some trustworthy badass now when he’s always been a sniveling backstabber. As for the fate of Maggie’s pregnancy, I only hope that she doesn’t die. I’m not too concerned either way. Another baby would only be a liability in this universe. During Talking Dead, producer and this episode’s writer Scott Gimple very meekly explained the non-end. “The end of the story is what people saw and when we reveal who was on the receiving end, that’s going to be the start of another story… the effects from that.” He explained that he wanted viewers to feel suspense and terror like the core characters and that “We’re going to deliver you a story next season that justifies it.” Comic creator Robert Kirkman also said that he loved cliffhangers and defended it by saying “The cliffhanger isn’t the story.” He explained that the story was more about Rick’s transformation from being in charge to being beat down. It’s not like this blockbuster show is going to lose viewership if they wrap up lose ends. They don’t need to bait us to get us to watch next season. photos credit: AMC

I’m pretty sure the Dragonflies knew/suspected this: Tom Hiddleston made an appearance at last night’s Academy of Country Music Awards. He’s still shilling for I Saw the Light, so he went to pay homage to country music and Hank Williams and all of that. I think Tom looked really nice – his hair didn’t look shellacked, and it almost looks like he spent the day doing dirty things in a Las Vegas hotel room (the ACM Awards were held in Vegas). He has a lot to say about music in general, how much he loves Radiohead and Nirvana and Amy Winehouse and more. I’m including some other photos of some of the “hot guys” at the ACM Awards. Mostly because… you guys, I’m developing a thing for Luke Bryan. I used to think he was a boring country douche-bro, but as time goes on… I think I like him. Sort of. At the very least, I find him attractive. Those sexy beanpoles get me every damn time. Luke was the co-host of the ACM Awards along with Dierks Bentley. The reviews of their performance were… mixed. Here’s Scotty McCreery. I’m not into him, but some of you might be. And here’s Sam Hunt, one of the few highlights from this year’s Grammys. Emma Watson needs a better explanation for her Lancome skin-whitening ads

Several years back, Emma Watson got a lucrative beauty contract with Lancome. She became one of their “faces,” and she appeared in print ads for many different Lancome products. Her contract is done at this point, and I have no idea if Lancome simply didn’t renew it or if Emma just didn’t want to be in their advertising anymore. But this week, people started discussing a print ad from 2013. The print ad (seen above) features Emma as the “face” of a skin-whitening Lancome product being sold in Asia. As you can imagine, the reaction was really, really bad. People have been itching to write off Emma as just another non-intersectional white feminist, and this gave them a perfect opportunity. Beauty companies have long sold “skin lightening” products in countries with large (or nearly exclusive) populations of non-white women. Lancome is not the first nor will they be the last. Colorism, racism and the white-dominated hierarchy of beauty standards all come into play when we talk about skin lightening. We’ve talked about it before too, with Freida Pinto talking openly about her disgust for Indian society’s obsession with getting lighter skin. Anyway, the conversation centered around Emma and how she’s basically Peak White Feminism because she has profited from selling this bulls—t. So Emma’s publicist came out and this was literally the only statement made. “I cannot comment on my client’s previous contractual arrangements with Lancôme. However, my client no longer participates in advertising beauty products, which do not always reflect the diverse beauty of all women.” [Via People] If it sounds like Emma’s people are sort of throwing Lancome under the bus, that’s because I think they are. I also think there’s a very real possibility that Emma’s images were used by Lancome for skin-whitening products without her explicit or implicit endorsement. Oh, and a Lancome representative told People: “Blanc Expert was created by Lancôme 20 years ago. It helps brighten, even skin tone, and provides a healthy looking complexion. This kind of product, proposed by every brand, is an essential part of Asian women’s beauty routines.” [Via People] That pisses me off more than Emma’s rep’s statement. Skin-lightening products are not now and never have been an “essential” part of Asian women’s beauty routines and f—k you very much for saying so, Lancome. As for Emma and white feminism… I find Emma less harmful than someone like Lena Dunham, honestly. I think Emma is trying and she’s attempting to educate herself beyond the narrow feminist beliefs she held just a few years ago. Does she deserve some backlash? Sure. Tyler Baltierra & Daughter Visit Catelynn Lowell in Rehab

Last week, Teen Mom star Catelynn Lowell checked into rehab in order to receive treatment for a number of emotional issues. In the days prior to her departure, there were rumors that Catelynn and Tyler Baltierra were headed for divorce, as both newlyweds posted cryptic and troubling social media messages hinting at trouble in the home. Fortunately, Tyler put those fears to rest over the weekend when he tweeted about bringing daughter Nova to visit Catelynn for the Easter holiday. “On a flight to go see Cate & Nova first choked on a cracker, then puked up the cracker all over me & then pooped, all within a half hour!” he tweeted on Saturday. Catelynn has spoken openly about her past struggles with postpartum depression, and though she didn’t go into detail about her latest bout, she has confirmed that she’ll be in treatment for the next several weeks. In the meantime, Tyler seems to be holding things down at home. According to his social media pages, he spent the weekend completing a renovation project and catching Batman v Superman with friends. The location of Catelynn’s treatment facility is unknown, but it seems Tyler and Nova will spend the next few days at a nearby hotel. Renee Zellweger thinks her plastic surgery stories were just on ‘social media’

On Friday, Renee Zellweger appeared on the Today Show to do some advanced promotion for Bridget Jones’ Baby, which isn’t out until September, although the first trailer dropped last week. The trailer was met with mixed reaction… some were iffy about the introduction of Patrick Dempsey’s character, some were iffy about the plot, which features a paternity drama, and some were like, “I’ll see anything with Colin Firth, so this is for me.” Renee addressed the paternity drama stuff quickly, and as it turns out, they shot several different endings so even she doesn’t know who fathered Bridget’s baby. At the end of the interview, Renee gets asked an uncomfortable question though. See… that kind of pisses me off AND I feel somewhat sorry for her. This isn’t a schadenfreude thing where I’m happy to see Renee get slammed by the media, but it’s difficult to feel genuinely sorry for her when she’s still playing this stupid-as-hell games about her very obvious plastic surgery. Renee came out a few years ago with an entirely new face, and everyone and their brother could see that she had gotten some very, very noticeable eye work and more. So when Today asked her, “I remember a couple of years ago people were talking about, ‘Oh, she changed her appearance.’ Does it bother you, does it get to you or is it just par for the course?” “It’s not really part of my life. It’s part of the job, that I don’t really experience except when I step into this arena. In my home I’m not aware of it. I don’t do any kind of social media, so I don’t see it. I like to have – I guess you would call them real experiences.” [Via People] Girl, please. It wasn’t some social media snafu. Every media outlet – gossip and mainstream – ran those photos in 2014 and said something about how different she looked. If she doesn’t want to admit that she had work done, so be it, and I’m sorry that she’s in this uncomfortable position of not feeling like she can be honest about her work. But I hate these stupid games, especially in response to silly backdoor questions. The Today Show didn’t want to be “mean” and ask “So why did you feel the need to come back into the limelight with a new face?” So they ask her “how did it feel when everyone was like ‘She has a new face’?” And Renee’s answer is basically, “What?
