Leo DiCaprio throws shade at politicians who don’t believe in ‘modern science’

Here are some photos of Leonardo DiCaprio in Japan this week to promote the Japanese premiere of The Revenant. Japan usually gets films several months later than America and Europe, so this is no big deal. And Leo has a lot of Japanese fans, and many of them literally dressed up as bears to see him in Tokyo. During the press conference for the film, Leo was asked about one of his signature issues: the environment, or more specifically, the reality and politics of climate change. His answer was pretty pointed, even though he didn’t specifically name names. Fresh from his Oscar-winning role in “The Revenant,” Leonardo DiCaprio suggested Wednesday that his upcoming documentary on climate change could help raise awareness about a phenomenon that some US presidential candidates reject. DiCaprio said one of the collaborators for the film to be released before the November election was Fisher Stevens, a producer of the 2010 Oscar-winning documentary “The Cove” about dolphin-killing in the small Japanese town of Taiji. “We’ve been travelling around the world documenting climate change,” DiCaprio told a press conference in Tokyo, adding they visited China, India and the North Pole and South Pole. Though he did not offer any names, he said some candidates seeking the highest US office are falling short in their environmental attitudes. “We should not have a candidate who doesn’t believe in modern science to be leading our country,” he said. “Climate change is one of the most concerning issues facing all humanity and the United States needs to do its part.” Republican front-runner Donald Trump said last year he did not believe in climate change, while his key rival Ted Cruz has dismissed it as “pseudo-scientific theory”. [From AFP] While it seems like his statement is actually pretty obvious, and that the overwhelmingly majority of people would agree, it actually IS being treated as a controversy in the conservative media. Because they would disagree with the fundamental idea that the president of the United States should believe/know that climate change is real, that all of this is really happening. It is SCIENCE, despite what a handful of oil-and-gas “scientists” want to tell the GOP. That’s what I never understood about the GOP side of this argument – if they want to say that we shouldn’t do anything about climate change, then argue that point. Don’t make it into an argument about whether climate change is real, because yes, then you do sound anti-science. And dumb. Photos courtesy of WENN.

Irina Shayk goes blonde for a Mert & Marcus shoot: divine or disaster?

I genuinely find Irina Shayk to be one of the most beautiful models around. My favorite is still Doutzen Kroes, but I really like Irina’s “look.” But not here. This just goes to show you: you can be arguably one of the most beautiful women in the world, and there are still looks and hair colors that you can’t pull off. Irina Shayk can’t pull off blonde. Now we know. Irina posted the above photo to her social media, writing: “Who said I can’t be blonde?” I DO. I say you shouldn’t be blonde, not that you can’t. Irina tagged the photo with Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott’s names, so I’m assuming this is for a magazine editorial, or possibly an ad campaign. In other words, it’s likely temporary and she’ll be brunette again in no time. I’m sure some of you will even theorize that it’s a wig, but I really don’t think so? I’ve been fooled before though, so who knows? Meanwhile, Irina is still going strong with Bradley Cooper, despite the now monthly tabloid reports of an impending split. They were out in NYC just a few days ago, holding hands – go here to see the photos. Meanwhile, did anyone else read Lainey’s blind item last week and immediately think of B-Coop and Irina? You can read the full blind item here, but I thought the second guy was B-Coop, the part about a guy paying his girlfriend a million dollars a month to be his official. PS… Her brows are really throwing me off too. Right? Photos courtesy of Irina’s Instagram, WENN.

Serena Williams: Maria Sharapova ‘showed a lot of courage to admit’ to doping

Yesterday, we discussed how Maria Sharapova tested positive for a banned substance. The substance? Meldonium, which Sharapova openly admitted she has been taking for 10 years. Meldonium was just added to the banned-substance list in 2016, a fact which Sharapova claims she was unaware of. The claim that she was unaware has brought mixed reactions, and one of the best pieces I’ve read was this Guardian piece, where they basically say that Sharapova is one of the most heavily managed, structured and well-staffed athletes in the world, so how is it possible that she was unaware of the changes in the banned-substance list? While you ponder that, Serena Williams and Caroline Wozniacki have both chimed in. Just FYI: Caroline and Serena are really close friends and I can totally picture the two of them texting like crazy throughout the Sharapova news conference on Monday. While a Tuesday press conference was supposed to highlight World Tennis Day, the annual celebration didn’t get much airtime. Instead, most questions focused on Maria Sharapova’s Monday announcement that she failed a drug test at this year’s Australian Open. World No.1 Serena Williams and two-time year-end World No.1 Caroline Wozniacki spoke about the revelation. “I think like everyone else said most people were surprised and shocked by Maria,” Williams said. “Most people were happy that she was upfront and very honest and showed a lot of courage to admit to what she had done and what she had neglected to look at in terms of the list at the end of the year.” Wozniacki explained that as a tennis pro, she pays special attention to what she consumes. “Any time we take medication, we double and triple check because sometimes even things like cough drops and nasal sprays can be on the list,” she said. “As athletes, we always make sure to really make sure there’s nothing in it that could put us in a bad situation.” Williams continued, “It’s just taking the responsibility, which she was willing to do and ready to. I hope for the best for everyone in that situation.” During the conference, Williams was also asked Nike’s decision to suspend its endorsement deal with Sharapova. Williams, who is poised to become the world’s highest-paid female athlete after the Russian’s announcement, demurred. “I can’t comment on Nike,” said Williams who is endorsed by the company. “I think they’re a successful, huge billion dollar company and make their own decisions and obviously know how to make great decisions.” [From Fortune] Wozniacki came in with the pointed comment, not Serena, did you notice that? Like, Caroline was the one with the judgy “well, when you’re a professional athlete, you’re supposed to be pay attention to what you’re taking” comment. While there has historically been no love lost between Sharapova and Serena Williams, I feel like Wozniacki might have a beef with Sharapova too. As for the Nike thing, it’s true – Sharapova’s lucrative, $70-million Nike contract has been “suspended.” TAG Heuer and Porsche have also suspended their sponsorship deals with Sharapova. The Independent did a fascinating breakdown of how quickly Sharapova has been losing sponsors, compared to male athletes who have tested positive for banned substances. The theory seems to be that there is sexism at play, that Nike in particular has given male athletes more time and consideration before pulling their contracts. While I think there’s definitely a sexist element to how quickly Sharapova is being thrown under the bus, I also think it’s a little late to complain about it, considering Sharapova has made an incredible fortune for herself just by being lithe and blonde and camera-ready. The Bachelor Finale Sneak Preview: Ben Proposes to …

Ben Higgins WILL pop the question on The Bachelor season finale Monday. That much is clear. But he's IN LOVE with TWO women, so … Will it be Jojo Fletcher or Lauren Bushnell getting asked?! The Bachelor spoilers shed light on that if you care for that insight. If not, man, the preview below is a feast for the overly-edited senses! “I’m sitting here on a bathroom floor," Ben tells one of his two finalists around the halfway point. "And … I love you. I’m in love with you.” “But do you love her too?” she asks. “Yes.” Oh s–t, this is about to get REAL. When Ben says he put his fiancee through hell, we now understand a little bit more about what he means … as she has to watch this. In order to fully invest himself in one of these two AMAZING women, Ben brilliantly observes, he will have to say goodbye to the other. How will he handle that? Not well, it looks like. He is a lost man right now, he assures us, unaware of what comes next or how to react. The fallout could be epic. Not just for the drama of who Ben Higgins will choose, or how the woman whose heart he breaks will respond. It can't be easy to hear that he was falling just as hard for someone else, and some fans have theorized that his engagement is in peril. That's just conjecture, however. The show's track record is so poor, we would not assume any happily-ever-after scenarios, but we wouldn't rule them out. Not yet anyway. What we can tell you is that this is a man fighting back tears when he talks about the woman he DOES plan to propose to, and … wow. Is it dusty in here now too?! Check out the preview for Monday's season-ender below and tell us: Team Lauren or Team Jojo? And will Ben and the winner last?

Prince William attends Welsh rugby game, his third royal-work event of the year

See Prince William belt out the Welsh national anthem at rugby match https://t.co/lEfc1LTSCg pic.twitter.com/hKTKgpwFhn — People Magazine (@people) February 27, 2016 Last night, Prince William completed his third royal-work event of 2016. Yes, we’re at the end of February and William has completed all of three events. Plus, he’s done maybe 12 shifts at the EAAA, about 100 hours or 12 days of work. So… yeah, no one knows what he does with all of his free time. But here we are, at a point where the British press falls over themselves to talk about William being hard at work… by attending a rugby game. William is vice royal patron of the Welsh Rugby Union and patron of the Welsh Rugby Charitable Trust, which is how he gets to go to a rugby game and count it as work. William apparently sang the Welsh national anthem, watched the fame and then attended a reception for injured players and their families. Kate was not there – last year, there was talk of Kate fighting against being a “rugby widow” and trying to learn more about the game to support her husband. I guess she’s given that up. Or, you know, she was just home with the kids or whatever. William went on the record saying many words about rugby, but it’s all in one ear and out the other for me. He also managed to slip in some words about his children, saying: “No broken bones yet, but they’re trying. Running around, pushing things, jumping. Please tell me it gets easier… Charlotte is very easy, very sweet, but all the fathers say, ‘Just you wait, when you get to 9, 10, 11, they go crazy.’ I’m looking forward to it, there will be some drama.” [From People] To be fair, how did you expect Will and Kate to organize a pap stroll with George and Charlotte in tow just to make this month’s work-shy kerfuffle blow over? That kind of effective baby-shilling takes time, so William just had to go with mentioning his daughter by name in public. I’m surprised he didn’t “accidentally” refer to his daughter as “Charlotte Elizabeth DIANA.” Speaking of Diana, if you noticed a significant uptick in Diana-mentions at the tailend of the week, it was because the geniuses in Will and Kate’s press office decided to “confirm” that Will and Kate will be visiting the Taj Mahal during their April trip to India. If this doesn’t sound like news, it’s because it’s not. We already knew/suspected/theorized that they would be going to the Taj Mahal, because it’s their first state visit to India and of course they’ll visit the Taj Mahal. But it was “confirmed” by Will and Kate’s press office on Friday, and so the British papers dutifully trotted out the old photos of Diana sitting alone in front of the Taj Mahal, looking forlorn and lonely. I guess the point of the press office pushing the story is that people are supposed to say “at least Diana’s son ended up in a happy marriage.” But… did he? Alicia Vikander in Erdem at the WIF, Film is GREAT events: cute or cloying?

There were several big pre-Oscar events in LA last night, and I really hope the low-turnout at these events is indicative of the turnout for the Oscars. The two biggest events were The Film is GREAT reception (which is for British films and British actors nominated this year) and the annual Women In Film pre-Oscar cocktail party. Alicia Vikander wore the same Erdem dress to the WIF event and The Film is GREAT reception. I was set to side-eye Alicia’s presence at a British-film gathering, but then I remembered that The Danish Girl is a British-financed film with a British director and British costars. So… okay. It’s worth noting that her hokey “posh British” accent is really, really distracting in The Danish Girl. Here’s Idris Elba at the Film is GREAT reception, then he went out partying in Hollywood. Idris will be attending the Spirit Awards later today, and…? He’s not on the Oscar presenter list, but maybe he’ll come out for some of the Oscar parties. If he does come out for the parties, he should rethink the hat. Here’s Jennifer Jason Leigh at the Women in Film event. I feel a little bit sad about JJL – in another year, with a different campaign, this might have been her moment to win. I don’t like her ensemble here, it looks cheap. Maria Bello at the WIF event – this ensemble is absolutely tragic. Michelle Monaghan in Erdem at the WIF event… the “sheer dickie” part of this needs to GO. And finally, here’s Cate Blanchett at her own separate event for SK-II #ChangeDestiny Forum. She’s the face of SK-II (a skincare company), so I assume this was just a pre-Oscar event the company set up to promote their product AND Cate. The Antonio Berardi dress is very sexy – I love the little cap sleeve, and the design reminds me a lot of Roland Mouret. Photos courtesy of Fame/Flynet and WENN.

Ginnifer Goodwin: people roll their eyes when I get on a plane with a baby

Ginnifer Goodwin of Once Upon a Time is pregnant with her second baby, with her husband and co-star, Josh Dallas. I would assume that she’s due around May, since the announcement was made last November. Goodwin voices one of the lead characters in the upcoming animated movie, Zootopia. She talked to US Magazine at the premiere about the challenges of being pregnant and raising a two year-old. It sounds like she considers air travel to be difficult, but not because her son is unruly on the plane, but because she feels judged by other passengers: Once Upon a Time actress Ginnifer Goodwin and her costar husband, Josh Dallas, aren’t exempt from toddler-shaming when they travel with their 20-month-old, Oliver. “People will look at us and they’ll roll their eyes when we go on an airplane,” the actress told Us Weekly on Wednesday, February 17, at the L.A. premiere of her new animated Disney film, Zootopia. “We’re like, just wait. We’ve got a pretty cool kid.” [Goodwin] admitted she was thinking of her son while she walked the red carpet with Kristen Bell, Katie Lowes and Shakira. “He’s amazing,” she gushed. “I miss him right this second.” Goodwin, who is having a baby boy, also said she’s been feeling tired. “Someone just told me that being pregnant is like, you put your body through what it is to run a marathon every day,” she told Us. “That made me feel a little better about being winded while chasing a 2-year-old around!” “He does at least 50 percent of all the parenting, and I really don’t know how people do it when they don’t have a partner who’s not supportive,” she revealed. “It’s so hard. It’s beautiful. But it’s hard!” [From US Magazine] Honestly I don’t get annoyed at babies crying on planes, I get annoyed at parents who think the rules don’t apply to them. I travel frequently, and I had an eight hour plane ride last month next to a couple with one baby. Almost the entire flight either the mom or the dad was in the aisle so that the baby could have a seat to herself. The baby was about five months old and could have been on someone’s lap, but they took up the aisle and were constantly getting stuff in and out of the overhead bin. No amount of side-eyeing or telling the woman I could wait to get out until she sat down would actually get her to sit down. So people don’t just side eye babies because they cry and fuss on the plane, which is completely understandable. I traveled all the time when my son was an infant, I get it that it’s hard, but it’s hard for everyone else too. Plus, I would assume Goodwin flies business class. People pay thousands of dollars for that, they don’t want to deal with parents messing around. I’m not saying Goodwin does this, she’s probably a respectful traveler, especially if she notices people judging her. No amount of judging could get that mom to sit down for five minutes. I should have told the flight attendant. photo credit: WENN.com
