Benedict Cumberbatch: My wife should ‘always’ draw the eye of photographs

Benedict Cumberbatch is currently promoting The Hollow Crown in Britain. We still don’t have an air date here in America, but it will probably air next fall on PBS, that’s my guess. But the British premiere is upon us, and as such, Benedict covers some of the local British magazines. I can’t say I took this Radio Times cover very seriously though. The mud around Benedict’s face just looks… wrong. Very wrong. Benedict spoke about playing Richard III to the mag: Learning he was related to Richard III: “I was literally dressed as Shakespeare’s version of Richard III when I received an email from Leicester University saying that I was a not-altogether-ridiculously-distant descendant of Richard. I’m a third cousin 16 times removed, which is still distant, but puts me ahead of an awful lot of other people.” Attending the reinternment of Richard III in Leicester Cathedral. “To have been present when Richard III found his resting place was moving. I was at the burial of a king.” Why Richard III’s story is important in the modern world: “These films stretch way beyond the remit of historical or period drama. They are about everything we’re facing – all the debates about who we should ally ourselves with, whether we should be part of Europe, and how deep these divides go within a society. And the violence of medieval warfare has a resonance with what’s going on with extremism in the world…To see the headlines, and then read the day’s shooting script, realizing we are enacting a beheading, literally taking someone’s head off their shoulders – sad to say, these are things which are still part of our world.” [From The Telegraph] I’m sure there are some in Britain who feel that Benedict might be stretching to find a modern context for the Richard III story, but I think he’s right – there’s a tunnel vision when it comes to modern struggles, like Donald Trump is the first fascist to ever run for office, or that a nation’s isolationist tendencies ebb and flow. But there are far-ranging histories with all of these issues. Benedict also chatted with Culture Mag about how vanity and how he hated that he was photographed at Pres. Obama’s speech: He doesn’t have any vanity as an actor: “I’ve had a career that’s not dependent on the way I look – but that is a great liberation for an actor, so I’m not really that vain about it. As myself, of course, I get a bit of, like ‘Oh God, I look like s**t’, but as an actor I’ve never, ever cared.” Being photographed at Obama’s speech in London: “We were right beside the press pack, and there were people there with telephoto lenses. When they realised that Barack was going to be another five minutes, the whole lot just went wumph, onto me, onto the side of my face… I was just like, ‘How many times can you take a photo of a not particularly attractive profile – again and again.’ I mean, thank God Sophie was there, so that kind of drew the eye of the photographs, as it always should. But it was just embarrassing.” [From The Belfast Telegraph] Whoa, first of all… I kind of think it’s wrong for Benedict to refer to Pres. Obama as “Barack” right off the bat. I mean, do they know each other? Are they friends? Did Obama say “call me Barry, Benedict”? No. Also, “thank God Sophie was there, so that kind of drew the eye of the photographs, as it always should…” I get that he’s trying to be self-deprecating, but he makes Sophie sound like she’s there to be the eye-candy. Soko wears lace Chloe doily to Cannes photocall: interesting or terrible?

Here are some photos from the Cannes photocall for The Dancer, also being called La Danseuse (French for “the dancer”). The film is being called Lily-Rose Depp’s big entrance into acting, and she stars as Isadora Duncan. Soko – best known around here as Kristen Stewart’s melodramatic ex-girlfriend – plays Loie Fuller. I was expecting the fashion-story around this film to be centered around Lily-Rose, honestly. I wasn’t expecting Soko to bring it at all. But Soko brought it! And Lily-Rose just didn’t. Lily-Rose is wearing Chanel shorts and insouciance. Soko wore this lace Chloe dress which just looks like a gigantic doily to me. I was going to shade the sh-t out of this choice, but then I looked up Loie Fuller and I saw this amazing photo of her. My point? I think Soko is homage-ing the real Fuller with this look, and for that, I can’t shade her. I’ll also say this as gently as possible but… I didn’t realize that Soko is actually quite pretty? In paparazzi photos with K-Stew and on other red carpets, she’s looked sort of grungy and like she thought our notions of beauty were petty bourgeoisie nonsense. But she took a shower and applied some makeup and she looks nice. Also: there’s already some drama on the Kristen Stewart thing. Following their split a few weeks ago, Soko slammed Kristen (maybe) as a “f—king cheater.” Now they’re both in Cannes and attending the same Chanel party. They arrived separately and things were probably “tense.” Last thing: I didn’t realize that Gaspard Ulliel is in this film. Gaspard is MY FRENCH BAE. He’s mine! Matt Damon endorses Hillary for President: she understands the issue of water

Matt Damon is covering Town and Country’s June/July philanthropist issue. He talks about his work with Water.org, a charity he co-founded which brings clean water to the third world, and he endorses Hillary Clinton for President. I pegged Damon for a Bernie guy, but it sounds like he’s personally met with Hillary and knows that she’s committed to this issue. Plus it’s possible that he’s endorsing Hillary because it was thought that she had already statistically won the primary, although Bernie is giving her a good fight. (No disrespect to Hillary supporters and I swear I will vote for her!) Damon also discusses how he got involved with this charity. On the impact of being a celebrity and the influence that comes with it: “I became famous. It’s surreal to suddenly wake up to one day and have a larger sphere of influence than you ever anticipated. You genuinely want to do good in the world, but you’re going to make a lot of missteps. People started asking me to come to this gala or that. And then I would find my name associated with things that I didn’t know anything about. I didn’t want to be somebody at whom people rolled their eyes, thinking, ‘What is he doing, getting into the middle of this kind of stuff?’ And that’s why, once my life stabilized a little—my career was going pretty well, my wife was pregnant—I decided to get very serious about one thing.” On lack of access to uncontaminated water in areas where water is ubiquitous: “We don’t know anyone who goes thirsty. We have faucets everywhere. Our toilet water is cleaner than what 663 million people drink. The crisis in Flint, Michigan, ironically, is one of the first times, at least in my memory, that Americans have become aware of just how necessary clean water is, and the dire consequences of not having it.” On his endorsement of Hillary Clinton for President—because of water: “She understands it from a number of different angles—as a national security issue, as a human rights issue, and, obviously, its impact on women and girls. This is not a partisan issue, which is one really good thing about it. We’ve talked in equal parts to Republican and Democratic senators and congressmen.” On children missing school due to lack of clean water “One child dies every 90 seconds because of water-borne illnesses. It’s completely insane. But beyond just senseless death, this is robbing people of their humanity, of their hopes and dreams. And also of simple day-to-day things, like a kid having time to play.” [From Town and Country, received via email] Read the first paragraph above. Doesn’t it sound like his decision to go into charity work was image-driven rather than issue-driven? He’s serious and committed to this cause, I’m not questioning his involvement, I’m just saying that he describes his initial interest as a desire to control the narrative around him. Damon is calculated and careful with his public image and you can see that in how he reuses talking points, although he rarely talks about it. That said, he also focused on one thing so well that he brought worldwide awareness and money to an important cause. Water.org is an extremely effective and high-regarded charity and Damon has absolutely made a difference in the world. The full interview includes a nice story from Damon about how he talked to a 13 year-old girl in Haiti who had just received clean water in her village for the first time. The girl, who was top of her class, told Damon that she would use her extra free time to play. People: Ben Affleck wants Jennifer Garner back, but she’s not ready

We just saw photos and video of Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck with their kids in Paris, near where Ben is filming (and now executive producing) Justice League. They’re now in London I believe. Instead of leaving us to draw our own conclusions about the state of their relationship and whether they’re back together or just trying to show a united front for their kids, Jen’s pr team is spelling it out: he wants her back and she’s supposedly reticent. Yeah right. Nearly a year after Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner announced their split, the two have continued to maintain a close relationship: living together, going on weekend outings with their kids and even vacationing as a family – including a trip to Paris last week. Is a reconciliation in their future? “Ben wants Jen back,” a source close to Garner tells PEOPLE in this week’s issue, with a second source adding, “Ben wants to get back together. He wants her back.” But while the two have yet to file for divorce and have remained friendly, the source close to Garner says they haven’t rekindled their romance. “Jen is not ready to take Ben back,” says the source. “Ben has never been good alone and isn’t now either. But he is constantly working on himself. He has made big changes.” [From People] This story is from Garner, obviously, and it’s even sourced to her. She’s claiming that he’s changed and she’s preparing to announce that they’re back together. It’s all very predictable, as is her status as a doormat. Maybe that’s unfair to her, a lot of women take their husbands back after various Beckys, but Ben cheated with their damn nanny! Even if they were separated at the time, that’s the lowest. I do think the fame-hungry nanny forced Garner’s hand by going public and that Garner’s type A personality made her try to control the narrative through every up and down in their relationship. That’s still playing out, and it seems she hasn’t realized when to just keep things to herself. We didn’t need to know this. She could have just taken him back and then given an interview sometime in the fall confirming it. By that time they’ll probably be separated again anyway. Was Johnny Depp drunk at the ‘Alice Through the Looking Glass’ premiere?

Here are some photos of Johnny Depp and Mia Wasikowska at last night’s London premiere of Alice Through the Looking Glass, the sequel to the wildly popular Alice in Wonderland adaptation by Tim Burton. Depp returns as the Mad Hatter, Mia returns as Alice, and Sacha Baron Cohen (also pictured) stars as Time. This film also features Alan Rickman’s last voice performance as the Blue Caterpillar. Personally, I’m a little bit surprised that Amber Heard didn’t join her husband at this premiere – Amber loves a red carpet, and she loves the attention she gets from being on Johnny’s arm. I guess she’s working on Aquaman (she plays Aquaman’s wife) and maybe she couldn’t get away? Perhaps. Or maybe she didn’t want to prop up a totally sauced Johnny Depp one more time. Although I will say that Depp doesn’t look completely sh-t faced in these photos. I’d say he had a buzz, but wasn’t fall-down drunk. Speaking of Johnny slurring his words uncomfortably, most of you have already seen this video, but it’s worth posting. Following Depp and Heard’s hilariously awkward video apology in Australia, Johnny declared this week that wherever he goes now, he’s going to awkwardly apologize. How drunk does he seem in this video? More photos… allegedly, Mia is wearing Prada. It’s so blah, but then again… I’ve never thought Mia had any red-carpet “presence.” She’s a wonderful actress, but a failure as a fashionista. Isla Fisher looks pretty though. Alden Enrenreich, 26, cast as the ‘young Han Solo’: great choice or meh?

Last year, we learned that a huge slate of Star Wars-themed sequels, prequels and spin-offs were in the pipeline at Disney. One of the biggest projects was a combo prequel/spinoff, featuring the story of a pre-New Hope Han Solo. This is not going to be a straight up origin story with Han Solo’s childhood! The focus was always going to be on Han Solo as a 20-something dude, what he was up to before he met Luke Skywalker. The casting call went far and wide, and eventually Disney had the list culled to a who’s who of “really?” The shortlist featured names like Miles Teller, Scott Eastwood, Alden Ehrenreich, Logan Lerman, Emory Cohen and Ansel Elgort. The list was culled even further back in March, and now industry sources say that Disney has finally found their Young Solo: 26-year-old Alden Ehrenreich. After thousands of actors were considered to portray a younger Han Solo for a “Star Wars” spinoff, Alden Ehrenreich has landed the coveted role. Hollywood sources tell us Ehrenreich has signed on to play the iconic role, made famous by Harrison Ford, in the new movie, slated for 2018, which will focus on Solo before he joined the Rebel Alliance. One insider told us of Ehrenreich, 26, who most recently appeared in “Hail, Caesar!”: “Alden really impressed Disney and Lucasfilm execs with his screen tests. The deal is basically done.” Relatively little-known Ehrenreich — who’s also the lead in Warren Beatty’s upcoming, untitled Howard Hughes project with Fox — beat out candidates including “Divergent” stars Miles Teller and Ansel Elgort, Scott Eastwood, “Kingsman” and “Eddie the Eagle” star Taron Egerton, and “Sing Street” star Jack Reynor. The casting of the Han Solo character has been so shrouded in secrecy it was named “Project Red Cup,” in reference to the ubiquitous red plastic Solo cups. The film won’t start shooting until January, but reports are that the early casting is because the new Solo will have a cameo in “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” which is now shooting. That film is said to be set between “Episode III” and “Episode IV.” Reps for Ehrenreich didn’t get back to us. [From Page Six] I thought Rogue One was already in the can, but maybe not if they’re giving themselves time to film a quickie cameo with the new Solo. As for this choice… I don’t hate it. Alden is probably one of the best choices from the shortlist they had. He’s attractive (very much so), boyish, but with a slight bad-boy vibe that is desperately needed for Han Solo. Julia Roberts on staying in shape: ‘Remain calm, drink your water & be joyful’

The Cannes Film Festival starts next week, and Team USA is going to be pretty well-represented on the red carpet. In addition to the premiere of Woody Allen’s new movie, Café Society, Jodie Foster will be premiering her new film, Money Monster. Which means we’ll see Julia Roberts, George Clooney and probably Amal Clooney on the carpet. I’m genuinely excited about that. Julia tells InStyle – she’s the cover girl for June – that she might be wearing Givenchy, in which case it’s going to be HUGE… a huge disaster, that is, because Riccardo Tisci can’t design to save his life. But it will be great to see what Amal wears. Anyway, here are some highlights from Julia’s InStyle interview. On Jodie Foster: “Well, in my mind, she’s so scary, but really she’s so sweet… she’s so talented, notoriously brilliant. And she’s such a great actor. And really, she is very no-nonsense. She doesn’t think that there has to be some incredible, painful struggle to accomplish your goals. I thought she was crazy to be helming me and George—it’s like trying to keep puppies in a box.” Whether she’ll ever be on social media: “I think it’s like—what’s a good analogy? Listen, I don’t have my head in the sand. I’m aware of the different outlets, however you label them. It’s like people talking about a TV show: I can be perfectly aware of the TV show and the story, but it doesn’t mean I watch it. I have other friends who watch it, and they tell me about it. I mean, we were talking about Instagram. Everyone has Instagram on their phone. And I just, yeah, [if I had it] I would be looking at it all the time.” What she learned from her mom: “One of the greatest things she ever did for me … I remember asking her—when I had three kids under 3 years old and just felt like I was running in a thousand directions at once—“How on earth did you raise all of us? You worked full-time, and you did all these things.” She could have said, “Well, you know, you just do your best.” But she said, “Darling, it’s called day care. I dropped you and your sisters off at 7:30 in the morning, and I would pick you up at 4 in the afternoon.” But it didn’t feel like that to me. I didn’t feel like I was a dropped-off person who didn’t see her mom all day. I just felt completely part of her life, and she was part of mine. And that’s the magic trick: to make people feel that they’re with you when they’re not.” Whether she ever just goes shopping: “I do from time to time. It just kind of strikes at moments. The thing I never understood about fashion is that you put something on and you look and feel great, and then you put it on again 10 days later and it’s terrible.” How she stays in shape: “I feel like if I knew all the things to do [in terms of exercise], I would probably look like I was put together with tape. I would just go crazy. So I think, better just to remain calm, drink your water, get your sleep and be joyful. We definitely try to eat mindfully. As I always say to my kids, ‘You have to eat the good stuff to get the good stuff.’” Her first time at Cannes: “I’ve kind of avoided it. I mean, the first time I ever went to Asia was for a movie, Eat, Pray, Love. I’m a late bloomer.” [From InStyle, People] I always think Julia Roberts and Jennifer Aniston have the same kind of reaction to the rise of social media: social media came after their heydays, and they don’t really want to bother engaging in it. Surprisingly, Gwyneth Paltrow was in the same kind of boat, but she embraced her online presence and now she’s built an entirely new career out of it. Now, unlike other social-media-shy celebrities, I don’t get the feeling that Julia looks down on it at all. Like, she’s not judging it. She’s just not engaging with it at all.
