Tony Robbins Fans Walk on Hot Coals, Unsurprisingly Get Burned

For years, motivational speaker Tony Robbins has made a killing by telling followers to "Unleash the Power Within," but they're really burned up over his teachings now. Like, literally. The author and self-help guru reportedly had fans walk over a blanket of hot coals during a seminar in Dallas, encouraging them to, ya know, conquer their fears. To the surprise of no sane individual, more than 30 participants were treated for burns to their feet and legs, with five requiring hospitalization. I'm certain there are far safer fear-conquering activities that could've worked just as well, but nothing brings out your inner carnie like hot coal-stepping. Amazingly, Robbins' people have defended the coal walk, claiming that more than 7,000 people performed the feat but only five had to be rushed to the hospital. Call me crazy, but I think that's five too many. "I know it might not look that way, but this was actually another successful fire walk," Robbins' head trainer Chad Schinke told reporters. "We had over 7,000 people that walked across the hot coals and we always have a few people that have some discomfort afterwards," he added. "Discomfort" he calls it. Dude. "We do our best to take care of them and ensure that they get whatever help that they feel like they need." "Help that they feel like they need?" This guy's a tool. Funnily enough, with every cult there are always folks drunk on Kool-Aid who refuse to fault the ringleader. "I'm just shocked, I'm out of words," said one participant. "I've never seen this in all of my events and I have to just say it has nothing to do with the training." "It has absolutely nothing to do with Tony Robbins," she added. YES IT DOES, LADY. Do we have to point out the obvious? It was his event, he suggested the ridiculous exercise and he surely knew of the dangers because even my frigging cat knows better than to do something so asinine. The god complex, people. It's a scary, scary thing.

Bella Thorne: ‘Girls are just mean and so competitive — it’s so crazy’

For my money, Bella Thorne is the new Lindsay Lohan. I don’t mean that Bella is a cracked-out trainwreck. I mean that Bella, who turned 18 years old last October, reminds me strongly of Lindsay when Lindsay was that age. And yes, Bella is gingery and thirsty and she loves it when she’s photographed in various stages of undress, so there is that Lohan vibe to her too. Bella also has a knack for talking sh-t and giving pretty good interviews, so there’s that too. Bella covers the new issue of Galore Magazine, and she talks about real-life mean girls, #AskHerMore and beyond. Some highlights: Girls are so mean: “I don’t get offended because girls are really mean. I will say — no matter where you go in life, it’s high school everywhere. I’m sure in the work office, for you, there’s high school [drama], and there’s one girl who’s bitchier than everybody. Girls are just mean and so competitive — it’s so crazy.” She prefers hanging out with guys: “I’m very chill in that way. Other girls sometimes get really, really like, competitive and catty and ‘Who likes who? You like him? Too bad. I like him. We’re going to have a problem now.’” She is friendly with Mae Whitman & Chloë Grace Moretz though: “They’re all just such homeys. When somebody has a lower vocal range, it’s great because then I’m not the only one that sounds like a man. It’s the girls that are tomboys that I’m so down, any time of day, because I like to get my hands dirty. Germs don’t freak me out, and so I’m really just down to chill, you know, and watch movies. Anybody that can do that, any girls who can do that, you’d be surprised that like, everybody just wants to chill. But it’s not all the time. Girls ask me, ‘Let’s go out? Let’s go to this party? My friend’s famous and we should totally go there.’ And I’m always just like, ‘No! I’m tired, dude. I’m so tired. I just want to go home, watch a movie, sit on Netflix, and eat Top Ramen or order food.’” She works out all the time: “I work out every single day, sometimes multiple times a day. I only really work out my core, abs, and legs, and butt is included in that. I don’t really work out my chest or shoulders all that often because I personally don’t love that look. But what’s really good is jumping squats—really good.” She doesn’t diet: “I eat whatever I want all day long. I eat anything spicy, greasy, fried, with carbs, literally, everything. My skin doctor told me, ‘You need to cut out this, this, this, this.’ I’m like, ‘Shut up! No, I don’t. You just want to make me miserable and dependent on you, and I’m not going to because I’ll eat whatever I want.” She doesn’t believe in #AskHerMore: “When I watch The Oscars, my boyfriend and I have an Oscar party, and they’re like, ‘Okay, we need to record the first part since everyone won’t be here till later.’ And he’s like, ‘Why do you need to see the carpet? You do that all the time.’ And I’m like, ‘OMG bitch, I’m not on the Oscars carpet!’” [From The Daily Mail & Page Six] Of course I was rolling my eyes throughout this piece, but I’d like to say… I think there are many teenagers just like this. This self-absorbed and self-aware, this obsessed with telling you what they’re like and how cool and how chill they are and who’s in their clique and what they think about gender politics because OMG that girl was so bitchy to me. Maybe many of you know some great, amazing, inspiring 18-year-olds, but from what I’ve seen, a lot of them are like this. All I’ll say is that I’m really “over” young women telling people that they’re more of a hang-with-the-guys kind of girl, that all girls are so mean and catty, etc. You don’t sound cool. You sound like the mean, catty person. Photos courtesy of Galore.

Maria Sharapova gets to keep her sponsorships with Nike, Evian & Head

As we discussed yesterday, Maria Sharapova received a two-year ban on professional tennis after she admitted (after she tested positive) to using a banned substance. Sharapova’s version of the verdict is that the ITF found that she did not intentionally use banned substances, that it was all some big misunderstanding. But if you read the full decision – you can see the PDF file of the decision here – you might realize that the ITF investigated Sharapova thoroughly and they had many good reasons for implementing the two-year ban. Still, most people aren’t going to delve that deeply into it, especially because Sharapova is going to appeal the decision and she’s still fronting like she really didn’t do anything wrong. What’s surprising is that so many of Sharapova’s sponsors aren’t delving too deeply into the ITF’s decision either. Many of the sponsors are sticking with her. Shock of shocks. Maria Sharapova has found support from sponsors after being given a two-year suspension for failing a drugs test at the Australian Open. Sharapova has vowed to fight the ban, announced by the International Tennis Federation on Wednesday, after she tested positive for prohibited substance meldonium and high-profile sponsors Nike, Head and Evian are standing by the Russian, with Nike lifting the suspension they imposed on their contract when news of her failed drugs test emerged in March. At the time of the failed test, the sportswear company said it was putting its eight-year, $70m deal on hold. But in a statement on Wednesday night, it said that it had decided to continue working with Sharapova. “The ITF Tribunal has found that Maria did not intentionally break its rules. Maria has always made her position clear, has apologised for her mistake and is now appealing the length of the ban,” read Nike’s statement. “Based on the decision of the ITF and their factual findings, we hope to see Maria back on court and will continue to partner with her.” Sharapova’s racket provider Head never wavered in its support of her, citing her as a “role model and woman of integrity” at the time of her failed test and proceeding to extend her deal. On Thursday, Evian said in a statement: “The ITF tribunal concluded that Maria Sharapova’s contravention was not intentional. Following this announcement, Evian has decided to maintain its long-lasting relationship with the champion.” Two of Sharapova’s other sponsors, watchmaker Tag Heuer and luxury car brand Porsche, have been less supportive. Porsche suspended activities with Sharapova following her failed test, and will now wait for the verdict to her appeal to the Court of Arbitration to Sport. The company said in a statement: “We have taken note of the recent International Tennis Federation ruling in the case of Maria Sharapova and are especially aware that it was decided that she was not accused of intentionally violating the World Anti-Doping Code. As Maria will appeal the decision, we will continue to keep all activities with her on hold until the final judgement has been reached.” Tag Heuer announced in March it had decided not to renew Sharapova’s contract, but has not ruled out working with her again in the future. Cosmetics brand Avon are also severing ties with Sharapova but insist that is not because of her doping ban. A spokesperson said: “Avon’s relationship with Maria Sharapova was a limited engagement that focused on one of our fragrances. The engagement is set to expire and we had not planned to extend this relationship regardless of the current situation.” [From The Guardian] The biggest deal was Nike, because that’s her most lucrative contract, and I’m absolutely shocked that they’re sticking with her. While Sharapova has always been more of a model than a professional tennis player, surely it’s bad business for an athleticswear company to continue spending tens of millions of dollars on an athlete banned from her sport following a thorough investigation? Surely it would just be easier for Nike to sever ties with Sharapova – for good cause, mind you – and start over with another player? And of course there’s a larger conversation to be had about privilege and what the reaction would have been if one of the Williams sisters had tested positive. Can anyone say that this would have the reaction if Serena was in this situation? Photos courtesy of WENN.

J.K. Rowling on reaction to new Hermione: ‘I thought that idiots were going to idiot’

Character portraits for the play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child were released over the weekend and they are all lovely; take a look on Pottermore. As we reported in December of last year, Olivier-Award winning actor, Noma Dumezweni, was cast as Hermione in this production. After the announcement, people with nothing better to do complained to the Twitterverse about her casting. The issue was not her credentials but the fact that she is not white and that somehow flies in the face of the characterization of Hermione. At the time, J.K. Rowling gave the following statement in support of the casting choice: Canon: brown eyes, frizzy hair and very clever. White skin was never specified. Rowling loves black Hermione ? https://t.co/5fKX4InjTH — J.K. Rowling (@jk_rowling) December 21, 2015 JK wrote the story upon which Jack Thorne’s play is based. HPatCC takes place 19 years after the gang has graduated Hogwarts. Harry is married with three children and the youngest, Albus, is reluctant to carry on the family legacy. The story is a continuation from the books, not the movies so it really doesn’t matter who played the part in the movie, even if they did a wonderful job in that role. Now that the dust up on social media has died down, JK expressed her annoyance about the controversy and did so in classic JK fashion. JK Rowling has revealed her frustration at online reaction by “a bunch of racists” to news that the role of Hermione will be played by a black actress in the eagerly awaited new play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. The production, which has broken records by selling 175,000 tickets in 24 hours, is tipped to be the theatrical event of the year. But the Harry Potter creator criticised those who have suggested that Hogwarts’ studious heroine could not be played by the Olivier-award-winning actress Noma Dumezweni. “With my experience of social media, I thought that idiots were going to idiot,” she said in an interview with the Observer. “But what can you say? That’s the way the world is. Noma was chosen because she was the best actress for the job.” While the vast majority of people responded positively to the casting decision, Rowling said: “I had a bunch of racists telling me that because Hermione ‘turned white’ – that is, lost colour from her face after a shock – that she must be a white woman, which I have a great deal of difficulty with. But I decided not to get too agitated about it and simply state quite firmly that Hermione can be a black woman with my absolute blessing and enthusiasm.” Dumezweni was cast by the play’s director, John Tiffany – known for the productions Black Watch and the musical Once – who has collaborated with Rowling and the playwright Jack Thorne, writer of This Is England and The Last Panthers. Tiffany said he was surprised by the opinions expressed online, but had stopped reading the comments. “I am not as Twitter-familiar as Jo and Jack, so I hadn’t encountered its dark side, which is just awful. But what shocked me was the way people couldn’t visualise a non-white person as the hero of a story. It’s therefore brilliant that this has happened.” [From The Guardian] I always cast books in my head and producers never go with my picks when they are made into movies. Shockingly, I am able to get over it and see the film without bias. I remain at a loss over the criticism of Noma; I would be thrilled to see someone of her caliber perform. Elphaba in Wicked needed to be green, it was a huge point in the story but Hermione’s skin color has no affect on her. I think I’ll save my outrage for the fact that I will never get tickets to this show and not the fact that Hermione is not alabaster or Ron not-ginger enough. Cincinnati Zoo Parents May Be Charged in Connection to Gorilla Shooting

The fallout from this weekend’s tragic shooting at the Cincinnati Zoo continues. As previously documented, and as depicted in the video below, a four-year old boy fell into the gorilla enclosure at this famous facility on Saturday, May 28. After the gigantic animals grabbed hold of the boy and started thrashing him about, officials were left with no choice but to have an employee fatally shoot the gorilla, who was 17 years old and named Harambe. Was the animal protecting the toddler? Hurting him? About to cause him real harm? Watch the surveillance footage and try to decipher for yourself: Cincinnati Zoo Gorilla Killed to Save Toddler’s Life: Who’s to Blame? Debate has raged all over the Internet in regard to the incident, with critics wondering why the zoo could not simply use a tranquilizer on the gorilla. The zoo has responded by saying the tranquilizer would have taken too long to go into effect. Others have placed the blame squarely at the feet of the boy’s parents, specifically his mother, Michelle Gregg. In response to the criticism she has received online, Gregg posted (and then deleted) a Facebook message that referred to the situation as an “accident” and which thanked God for keeping her son safe. Celebrities from all walks of entertainment life have also weighed in on the death of Harambe: View Slideshow: Harambe Mourned, Celebrated by Celebrities Everywhere Now, sources have confirmed that Cincinnati police are looking into Gregg and Deonne Dickerson, the boy’s father, even though the latter was not at the zoo when his son fell into the gorilla pit.  Authorities are reportedly reviewing “the actions of the parents/family that led up to the incident,” according to TMZ, implying they may be charged with the crime of negligence. Do you think they ought to be? Or was this just a very unfortunate accident that has taken on a life of its own due to the Internet? An insider also says the Zoo is NOT under investigation of any kind. It falls under the jurisdiction of the United States Department of Agriculture.

Amber Heard’s restraining order request has details of Depp’s alleged attacks

Amber Heard looks somber, bruised leaving court after accusing Johnny Depp of domestic violence: https://t.co/w97XhAfGbo — Us Weekly (@usweekly) May 27, 2016 Various outlets have obtained the text of Amber Heard’s restraining order request against Johnny Depp, which was granted. The details of Johnny’s alleged attacks, and of his behavior in general, are chilling. The court documents detail two incidents of abuse (update: another incident is referenced, see this article), each a month apart and the most recent one this Saturday. Johnny allegedly pulled Amber’s hair, threw things at her, and abused her. She states that he threw a cell phone at her this Saturday, hitting her in the eye. Photos of her bruises, including photos taken at her court appearance earlier today, support this. Amber maintains that Johnny has a substance abuse problem and has been abusive to her throughout their relationship: Johnny has been abusive for their entire relationship, has a drug and alcohol problem “During the entirety of our relationship, Johnny has been verbally and physically abusive to me “I endured excessive emotional, verbal, and physical abuse from Johnny, which has included angry, hostile, humiliating and threatening assaults to me whenever I questioned his authority or disagreed with him. “I live in fear that Johnny will return to (our house) unannounced to terrorize me, physically and emotionally, “Johnny has a long-held and widely-acknowledged public and private history of drug and alcohol abuse. “He has a short fuse. He is often paranoid and his temper is exceptionally scary for me, as it has many times proven to be physically dangerous and/or life-threatening to me. Johnny [sic] relationship with reality oscillates, depending on his interaction with alcohol and drugs. “As Johnny’s paranoia, delusions and aggression increase throughout our relationship, so has my awareness of his continued substance abuse. Because of this, I am extremely afraid of Johnny and for my safety… I am petrified…” Amber states that Johnny abused her on April 21 Heard claims that on April 21, he showed up to a birthday party at their home “inebriated and high.” As a “bad argument” developed, she claims he threw a magnum bottle of champagne at the wall, and a wine glass on her. “He then grabbed me by the hair and violently shoved me to the floor.” – From Radar and The AP Amber had not seen Johnny for a month until this Saturday On Saturday, May 21, Heard claims that she was having a conversation with two friends when Depp, 52, entered their downtown Los Angeles apartment. As the group of friends began to talk about the recent passing of Depp’s mom, the actor “began obsessing about something that was untrue” and became “extremely angry,” she states in the documents. In attempt to help relieve the situation, Heard began calling a friend who Depp was requesting to speak to, she states. “Johnny ripped the cell phone from my hand and began screaming profanities and insults at iO [the friend],” she said. “I heard iO yell at me to get out of the house. Johnny then grabbed the cellphone, wound up his arm like a baseball pitcher and threw the cellphone at me striking my cheek and eye with great force.” Heard submitted photos appearing to show a bruised eye as evidence. Heard says she covered her face and began to cry, then actor “charged” at her and “taunted” her, questioning if the phone actually hit her. “He then forcibly pulled back my hair as I attempted to stand up from the sofa,” she said. “I then yelled ‘Call 911′ – hoping it would be heard by iO who was still on the phone.” “Johnny continued screaming at me, pulling my hair, striking me and violently grabbing my face,” she continued. After a friend from next door entered the apartment with a key previously provided by Heard, Depp ran out of the apartment “smashing everything he could” with a wine bottle, Heard claims. She also submitted photos of damaged possessions. – From People [From People and Radar] Amber’s friend also submitted a declaration on her behalf stating that “Many times over the past few years, Amber has confided and complained to me about Johnny’s abusing her, both physically and verbally.” Some people are saying they don’t believe Amber based on the fact that the police found no evidence of a crime. Bruises take some time to appear, and Amber chose not press charges or provide a statement to police. She’s married to an incredibly famous man and she’s an actress, she probably weighed her options at a time when she was under extreme stress and decided not to bring attention to the situation. People Magazine has more photos of the scene and of Amber’s injuries which were submitted to the court. After seeing the photos of Amber’s injuries, and of how distraught she was outside of court, I absolutely believe her. Star: Joaquin Phoenix is almost broke, but still spending $5 million a year

Joaquin Phoenix has been getting photographed every few months in LA this year. He’s not working, but he seems to be keeping busy, taking martial arts classes and picking up cigarettes and energy drinks. Whenever I see pap photos of him, he seems to be doing well enough. But he hasn’t worked in more than a year. His last film was Woody Allen’s Irrational Man, which filmed in the summer of 2014. While Joaquin has flirted with signing on to some big projects – like Doctor Strange, which Marvel really wanted – nothing has really happened. And now Star Magazine says that Joaquin’s finances are in shambles and he needs to stop being so picky and/or shady. Joaquin Phoenix is in talks to play Jesus in a new movie, but he needs divine intervention to turn around his finances! “Joaquin needs to make $5 million a year to support his lifestyle, and so far this year he’s made zero,” an insider says, explaining that his attitude has so far cost him Jared Leto’s role in Suicide Squad, Lex Luthor in Batman v Superman and even the lead in the Doctor Strange flick out this November. “Getting him to sign on the dotted line is a nightmare,” says an industry insider. “He’ll drag out the salary negotiations for months, which holds up production and costs the studios more money in the end.” Not he’s hoping to get back in the black by playing the son of God in a Mary Magdalene flick costarring Rooney Mara. “Joaquin is confident he’ll get the part, but it’s not a done deal,” tattles the friend. “If he starts insisting on things like a feng-shui’d trailer and an on-call vegan chef plus an insane $15 million paycheck, he’s going to lose this role too. And that could mean he’ll be completely out of money by the end of the year.” [From Star Magazine, print edition] I never really think of Joaquin as a demanding diva or a money-strapped spendthrift. Is he temperamental? Sure. Does he believe his indie street cred would be damaged by taking roles in comic book movies? Probably. But is he the guy who blows through $5 million a year? Eh. Is he the guy who spends months arguing for bigger and bigger paychecks? Eh. My guess is that Joaquin argues for more money on films he really doesn’t want to do. Also: while the Doctor Strange thing has been verified, I didn’t know Joaquin was up for the Joker and Lex Luthor. Did he really say no to all three parts? Yikes. He would have been a much better and creepier Joker than Jared Leto. Photos courtesy of Fame/Flynet.
