Snoop Dogg wants people to boycott the History Channel’s ‘Roots’ miniseries

I did not watch the History Channel’s miniseries reboot of Roots. The miniseries began last night, and it continues over four nights. The original miniseries – also based on Alex Haley’s Pulitzer Prize-winning book – was groundbreaking television when it was made in 1977. It was one of the most-watched television events in American history and it became a national talking point in a larger conversation about race and civil rights in America. The History Channel’s reboot (or “reimagining”) of the miniseries with a whole new cast is supposed to be reflective of our current conversation about race in America, about Black Lives Matter, about violence against black bodies and more. But some people are just tired of watching movies and miniseries about slavery. One of those people is Snoop Dogg. Snoop Dogg has no plans to watch the Roots remake, and he’s telling his fans to also boycott the show. The rapper sent out his message over social media on Monday. “I’m sick of this sh-t. How the f— are they going to put Roots on, on Memorial Day?” Snoop said in an Instagram video. “They going to just to keep beating that sh-t into our heads about how they did us, huh?” The History channel’s revival is a four-part, eight-hour series that debuts Monday. Snoop said he has no interest in new shows and movies — specifically mentioning 12 Years a Slave — that “keep showing the abuse we took hundreds and hundreds of years ago.” “I ain’t watching that sh-t, and I advise you motherf-—ers as real n— like myself; f— them television shows,” Snoop said. “Let’s create our own shit based on today, how we live and how we inspire people today. Black is what’s real. F— that old sh-t.” [From THR] Snoop Dogg, social critic. Is it weird that I think he has a completely legitimate point? The most recent example is the 2013-14 awards season, where 12 Years a Slave dominated and Fruitvale Station was ignored. While I thought 12 Years was a powerful piece of filmmaking and a film full of incredible performances, why was it pushed for awards while Fruitvale largely ignored? Fruitvale was a modern story (and a true story, like 12 Years) of brutality on black bodies. Both were important films that said important things. But Hollywood likes to reward films and miniseries about slavery and white saviors and downtrodden historical black folks. They don’t want to reward modern stories about the African-American experience, with multifaceted African-American characters operating in a multiethnic and morally ambiguous context. Remember last week when we reported that Farrah Abraham and Simon Saran are back together? Well, it turns out the reconciliation only lasted about as long as Farrah’s porn career. According to her latest Instagram posts, it seems Farrah and Simon have broken up once again. Or at the very least, Farrah is pretending they’ve called it quits so that she can hawk a new dating app with the implication that she’s looking to get busy with the sad souls who download it. Ms. Abraham posted the above photo yesterday, along with the following caption: “I love this new sexy app for singles who like to go out.” She went on to extol the virtues of Peeq, which from what we can tell is a Tindr-like app for those seeking no-strings-attached sex. In another post, Abraham encouraged users to “find” her on the app. Again, Farrah is the type who would encourage “sexy singles” to hunt her down even if she were involved in a committed relationship, so there’s no guarantee that she’s once again kicked Simon to the curb. But whatever the case, she’s Instagram single once again, and in Farrah Land, isn’t that all that really matters? No, it’s also worth noting that Farrah is looking more like a soulless blow-up doll every day and poppin’ bottles with a six-foot Pikachu for some reason: The best part is that in the caption for this pic, she offers zero explanation for the presence of everyone’s favorite Pokemon. Like so many things in Farrah’s life, it only makes sense to Farrah. Just kidding, there’s no way she devotes the slightest thought to any aspect of her absurd existence. Miranda Simms Calls Leah Messer Out: I’m So Good To Your Girls!

Leah Messer's cousin recorded an interaction between one of her twin daughters and their stepmom, Miranda Simms. Naturally, it disturbed the Teen Mom 2 star. In the recording Ali, 6, complained that “Miranda always gets mad at me cause my backpack is too heavy." Ali was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy, which leads to weakness and muscle mass. “I give her my backpack when it’s too heavy" Ali continued. "She [Miranda] says, ‘Ali, I have to hold the baby.'” Miranda and Leah's ex-husband have a daughter, Remington, whom they welcomed back in November. Leah was furious after watching the video. “I can’t watch it without getting angry or wanting to cry… I don’t know what to do,” she told her sister, Victoria. "There’s nothing wrong with you going down there and saying, ‘I’m tired of my kids hurting,'" Leah told Victoria "Ali has a condition, she can’t help it that she can’t carry the damn backpack. So the lazy b***h needs to pick the backpack up and carry it for her period. "There is no reason that kid should feel that way.” Leah told her sister that Ali says she's "upset" and "hurt" by the way Miranda treats her. “What do I do?” she asked helplessly. “I want to save them. I want to make them feel better, I want to rescue them and I can’t. There’s nothing I can do and they’re my kids.” It is Corey’s fault just as much as it is Miranda’s,” she added. “I would have never, ever thought he would allow this to ever happen to our kids.” In the video below, Leah deals with Miranda's reaction after she told Corey about the video. Angelina Jolie almost played the lead role in the iconic ’90s movie ‘The Craft’

This ^^ is a photo of Angelina Jolie in 1996’s Foxfire, the story about five teenage misfits who gang together to take down the man who has harassed them. Foxfire was the film where Angelina met and fell in love with Jenny Shimizu, incidentally. It was also the film Angelina did instead of The Craft!! For ‘90s girls like me, The Craft is a pretty big deal. Personally speaking, Clueless was always a bigger deal for ME, but I did enjoy The Craft. The Craft is also a story of a gang of misfit girls banding together… but they banded together for witchcraft! The iconic ‘90s film starred Robin Tunney (in the lead role), Fairuza Balk, Neve Campbell and Rachel True. The film turns 20 years old this year, and to celebrate, HuffPo did interviews with original cast members, producers and the director, Andrew Fleming. Fleming said that Angelina was very close to being cast in the lead role, which went to Robin Tunney. That’s what’s shocking to me, that Jolie read for Sarah and not Nancy (played by Fairuza Balk). You may not be able to picture The Craft with a different group of teen witches, but that was almost the case when putting the coven together. During an interview with The Huffington Post to celebrate the cult classic’s 20th anniversary, casting director Pam Dixon and director Andrew Fleming revealed that the famous 1996 flick almost starred some now-huge A-listers, including Angelina Jolie, Alicia Silverstone and Scarlett Johansson. And they all went for the same part—Sarah, the lead role. “We did these tests and we tested a lot of girls, some of whom have become really well-known,” Dixon shared. “We actually had a hold on somebody that we had to let go because she got offered another film, and we didn’t know if the movie was really happening. That girl was Angelina Jolie. She did Foxfire instead.” Oh, whaaaaat? She continued, “Another person who came in was Scarlett Johansson, who was just 12 at the time. The other girl was Alicia Silverstone. This would have been ‘95. She had just shot Clueless, but it had not come out. Alicia also got something between the time that we read them and the time we were really going to make the movie, so we couldn’t pick her up either and she went to do something else. They were all really for Sarah.” The lead role obviously ended up going to Robin Tunney, who actually auditioned for a smaller part in the film. “Robin was originally cast in the part that Neve Campbell played, but we wanted her for the lead. We had to talk her into playing the lead, which was weird. But she did it. She wanted to play Bonnie, and we said, ‘No, we want you to be Sarah.’ It was like a reverse-Hollywood story where she wanted the smaller part.” [From E! News] I could see how Alicia Silverstone would be in contention for the middle-of-the-road Sarah role, and I could also see how Angelina would have been outright offered the lead or any role in the film. But Angelina would have been better as Nancy. Perhaps they already had Fairuza at the time and they just wanted Sarah to be darker, thus Angelina. Because remember how Angelina was back then? Anne Hathaway cried when a trainer made a comment about her ‘baby weight’

Anne Hathaway is currently promoting her role in Alice Through the Looking Glass, which is why she appeared on The Ellen Show on Tuesday. This was actually her first TV interview since giving birth two months ago, and honestly, I already see a difference in Anne. She’s really sleep-deprived, for one. And as I said yesterday, I think the sleep deprivation is making her kind of punch-drunk. Anyway, she told a story about going back to the gym after she gave birth to her son, Jonathan Rosebanks (who she calls Jonny). Is two months too early to go back to the gym? It’s different for every woman, and I’m sure Anne’s doctors gave her the nod. But still, she really did just give birth, so she had a particularly emotional reaction when some dude made a comment about her “baby weight.” Anne Hathaway gave birth only eight weeks ago, so she’s not totally ready to resume some of her normal routines. She did decide, however, that she would go back to the gym, but even that has been tough. “Being a Mom has changed me in a couple ways. I actually, not based on this moment, but other moments feel a lot more confident. Normally you walk into the gym and you see, I work out in West Hollywood, so you see like Thor’s trainer, you know the people who have too many muscles to be in The Avengers that’s who works out at my gym,” she explains, adding that she has returned to the gym only three times. “So I would normally walk in and feel so intimidated, but I walk in I’m like yeah I work out with 5 pound weights, but I pushed a baby out of my body I feel good right now. So I don’t care what I look like, I feel great. I’m on this [row] machine, whatever that does.” All of a sudden, someone started to stare at the Oscar-winning star, so at first she thought she was doing something incorrectly and became a little insecure. “I see this guy who does actually look like Thor’s trainer staring at me and I’m like, ‘Oh God. Am I doing something wrong?’” Hathaway recalls. “In the past I just would have slunk off my machine.” With her new mommy confidence, Hathaway explains that she asked the trainer if everything was OK, and they struck up a short conversation. But it didn’t end there. “He’s like, ‘So you been working out at this gym for a long time.’ And I’m like oh my God he’s hitting on me. Nice! New mom. I feel really good about myself and I’m like, ‘Oh, yeah I’ve been coming here for a little bit.’ He’s like, ‘Cool, I’m a trainer here and just wondering if you want some pointers.’ And I’m like, Oh no he’s not hitting on you he just wants a job.” Spoiler alert: He didn’t get the job because instead of giving her the proper response after she revealed she had recently given birth, he body shamed her. “If somebody says I had a baby 13 years ago you say you look great. That is what you do that is the etiquette,” she explains on the show. “So I say to this guy I had a baby seven weeks ago. And he goes, ‘Oh, trying to lose the baby weight!’” Hathaway explains that she kept her cool in the moment, but afterwards she walked away and cried! [From E! News] To be fair to the dude-face trainer, he didn’t assume that she had just had a baby, he waited until she said it. And he didn’t say, “Oh, that’s why you look that way.” But yeah, it was rude. Really rude. There’s such an epidemic of rude gym trainers, right? I’ve been going to the same gym for years and I have my routine and I know what I’m doing (for the most part) and I stay in my particular comfort zone. But inevitably, a new trainer will show up and try to tell me what I should be doing in a really patronizing way. Like, “Oh, do you understand how the treadmill works?” Yes, trust me, I understand. Now go away. As for Anne’s situation, the guy just wanted work and he probably thought he was being helpful. And she should have told him to just go away. Perhaps because she didn’t and doesn’t seen anything wrong with a Becky quoting a Sir Mix-a-Lot song. The “LA face with an Oakland booty” is a lyric from Sir Mix-a-Lot’s “Baby Got Back,” a song that has an amazing shelf-life, right? Well, someone FINALLY asked Sir Mix-a-Lot what he thought about Blake quoting his song and claiming that she too has an “Oakland booty.” He likes Blake Lively’s butt and he cannot lie. Hip hop star Sir Mix-a-Lot defended the actress a day after she was lampooned on social media for using a lyric from his seminal hit “Baby Got Back” to caption a photo of her derriere in a form-fitting gown. “I don’t think she’d wear that dress if she thought that booty is horrible — and to me, it ain’t horrible,” he told the Daily News on Thursday. Despite his approval, a slew of fans blasted Lively for captioning the Instagram photo “L.A. face with an Oakland booty” — with some accusing the Caucasian starlet of turning the black female body into a punchline. But Mix-a-Lot doesn’t understand the backlash. “I don’t get it at all,” he said. “She’s saying she’s proud of her butt. I’m glad she embraced the look, because that’s what I wanted (with the song).” Mix-a-Lot says he wrote “Baby Got Back” in 1992 to celebrate women in a time where magazines and TV shows were churning out unrealistic beauty standards. He wanted curvaceous ladies to embrace their bodies, and he says his booty-loving anthem applies to women of all colors and ethnicities. Therefore, the rapper says, it’s important for naysayers to figure out what exactly Lively’s intention was with the caption before they immediately assume she was dissing black culture. “All I would say to the critics is let’s better understand the context of what she said,” Mix-a-Lot contended. “If what she’s saying is ‘I have this butt that Mix-a-Lot was talking about in ‘Baby Got Back,’ that’s a good thing. She’s saying I’ve embraced this ideal of beautiful. However, if what she’s saying is ‘I cannot believe I got this fat, this is horrible,’ then I agree with the critics,” he added. But the 52-year-old artist doesn’t believe that’s the case, and he’s glad the 28-year-old Lively hasn’t removed the controversial photo amid the wave of backlash. “I’m glad she didn’t pull it down, he said. “I don’t think she should.” [From The NYDN] I understand what he’s saying about Blake perhaps making a statement of embracing her curves and how it’s all body positive and la de da, but there IS a racial element to it, right? Larry David thinks white people only pretend to like ‘Hamilton’ to be ‘hip’

I’m going back and forth about whether I think these Larry David quotes are offensive. Larry David was doing an interview with the Mike Lupica Show this week, and he was asked about the smash Broadway musical Hamilton. Hamilton has been a phenomenon for more than a year, it’s pulled in tens of millions of dollars in ticket sales, and Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda has won a Pulitzer and a Peabody, plus the musical picked up no fewer than 16 Tony Award nominations. Basically, everyone thinks Hamilton is THE BEST. Full-stop. But no, says Larry David. Hamilton is popular because white people are just pretending to like it so they can be hip. “Hamilton” may be making history on Broadway, but Larry David, for one, is curbing his enthusiasm. The comic actor took to the “Mike Lupica Show” podcast, which debuted Tuesday, to express his theory that a lot of the demand comes from white ticket-buyers trying to “solidify their liberal bona fides.” “Yeah, ‘Hamilton’ — it was pretty amazing,” David told the Daily News columnist. “But I have a feeling there are a lot of white people who are saying they are completely blown away even though they didn’t really understand half of the things the people on stage were saying. They just want to solidify their liberal bona fides and how cool they are: ‘Yea, I love Hamilton. Yea I get it, I’m hip.’” Lupica made a connection to the kind of voters who mislead political pollsters. “I think some of them are. No but, the show is amazing,” said David. “No doubt about it, it’s an incredible show, but I do have this theory on a lot of the people that are seeing it.” [From The NY Daily News] I was going to make a point about how Larry David would never say “Leonardo DiCaprio’s films are so popular because white people just want to pretend that they’re cool.” But I actually do think that happens. By most accounts, The Revenant was a beautiful snoozefest, and I do think some people said they liked the movie because they wanted to look artsy and cool. So, is that happening with Hamilton? Or is Larry David showing off some racial microaggression about Hamilton, like the only reason it’s so successful is because white people are trying to be cool about something they don’t “get”?
