Pres. Obama wasn’t offended when Larry Wilmore called him the n-word

Embed from Getty Images As we discussed on Sunday, President Obama attended his last White House Correspondents’ Dinner Saturday night in Washington. Pres. Obama always brings the house down with his speeches, and this year was no different. As is often the case, Obama ended up being funnier than the actual comedian keynote speaker at the event. This year’s comedian was Larry Wilmore, who took over the 11:30 time slot on Comedy Central following Stephen Colbert’s move to CBS. Wilmore does a lot of racial humor, and his WHCD speech was no different. Considering he was speaking to a largely white audience, there were a lot of uncomfortable moments during Wilmore’s speech, and most critics claimed that Wilmore “bombed.” But the most uncomfortable moment came at the end, when Wilmore was reflecting on how much America has changed in his lifetime. He said: “All jokes aside, let me just say how much it means for me to be here tonight. I’ve always joked that I voted for the president because he’s black. But behind that joke is the humble appreciation for the historical implications for what your presidency means. When I was a kid, I lived in a country where people couldn’t accept a black quarterback. Now think about that. A black man was thought by his mere color not good enough to lead a football team. And now to live in your time, Mr. President, when a black man can lead the entire free world. Words alone do me no justice. So, Mr. President, if I’m going to keep it 100. Yo, Barry, you did it, my n-gga!” I thought it was an uncomfortable moment, but I noted that Obama took it in stride, laughing and embracing Wilmore as Wilmore left the podium. Other people were obviously knee-jerky about it, claiming that Wilmore never should have used any variation of the n-word. Al Sharpton said Wilmore’s use of the word was “in poor taste” and Piers Morgan (eye-roll) devoted some column space to his hot take. The outcry got so bad that the White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest had to answer questions about it at the White House briefing on Monday. According to Earnest: Pres. Obama “appreciated the spirit of the sentiments that Mr. Wilmore expressed…Any reading of his comments made clear that he was not using the president as a butt of a joke. I take Mr. Wilmore at this words that he found that to be a powerful transformation just in his lifetime and something he seemed to be pretty obviously proud of.” [From People] I get that. I don’t 100% agree with it, but I get it. Wilmore gets it too. He spent some time talking about the kerfuffle on his show on Monday, saying: “I completely understand why people would be upset. It’s a very charged word – I get it.” But, Wilmore pointed out the difference between ending the n-word with an “a” versus an “er,” the difference being that one is a term of endearment (according to Wilmore) amongst black folks and the other is denigrating. Also, Pres. Obama used the n-word in an interview last year and people freaked out. The context in which he used the word was important, just as I think the context of Wilmore’s usage of the word is important. Embed from Getty Images Photos courtesy of WENN.

Jay-Z didn’t attend the Met Gala because there was ‘no big reason for him to go’

Yesterday I noted how weird it felt to see Beyonce flying solo at the Met Gala. She seemed oddly vulnerable walking the carpet alone. While her sister was there, they didn’t walk the carpet together and they only spent time together inside the event. On the carpet, Beyonce seemed almost cautious, and like she was making a statement by going it alone. Page Six made a big deal about how Beyonce wasn’t wearing her wedding ring too. Sources claim Bey decided not to wear her ring because she didn’t think it “meshed well” with her Becky-skin Givenchy gown. So why did Jay-Z skip this year’s Met Gala? After the elevator drama post-Met Gala in 2014, Jay and Bey made a point of going to the 2015 Met Gala together as a show of solidarity. But post-Lemonade, Jay couldn’t be bothered? Beyoncé completely nailed her 2016 Met Gala look. There was just one thing missing when she hit the red carpet on Monday, May 2, in New York — her husband, Jay Z. Although fashion’s biggest night comes on the heels of Bey’s much talked-about visual album, Lemonade, sources tell Us Weekly that the rapper’s absence is no biggie — he’s simply just been there, done that. “He’s done it before,” the insider explains to Us. “There’s just no big reason for him to go.” [From Us Weekly] Suspicious? Yeah. Anyway, as I said, Bey and Solange spent a lot of time together inside the event. Solange didn’t bring her husband to the gala, but Alan Ferguson did come out for the post-gala parties. Beyoncé attended the Met Gala and after parties sans husband Jay Z. The singer first posed at Gilded Lily for the Balmain bash, where she hung out with the fashion house’s creative director, Olivier Rousteing, and her little sister Solange, who arrived with her husband, Alan Ferguson. “I don’t know where Jay was and I definitely thought it was interesting he didn’t come,” said one partygoer. “It definitely fuels speculation about the relationship, but I think that’s probably the point. People at the Met were talking about it.” But the chatter didn’t bother Beyoncé one bit. She celebrated with Champagne and “was in high spirits hanging out on the banquette with Olivier. She seemed to be in a very good mood,” a different source said. Bey later headed over to Up & Down, where DJ Jus Ske played Beyoncé’s song “Formation” as she arrived with Solange. [From Page Six] I get the feeling that the message – if there is a message – is that Jay-Z is still on notice to a certain extent. Like, Lemonade was about how he cheated, how Beyonce was mad and wanted to destroy everything, but she forgave him and worked through the drama. But he’s still on notice. And hey, maybe he truly didn’t want to go to the gala this year. Suspicious. PS… I absolutely love her party-pants!! Photos courtesy of Fame/Flynet, WENN.

Alicia Vikander cast as the new, rebooted Lara Croft: great choice or meh?

The last time we heard anything about the reboot of the Lara Croft franchise, it was last month, when we learned that Daisy Ridley was in talks to play Lara. The reboot, we heard, would focus on Lara’s earlier years, her college-student years, before she became the buxom Tomb Raider played by Angelina Jolie. Daisy is 24 years old, and while petite, would have been able to handle the physicality of the role. But producers decided to go with someone else: 27-year-old Alicia Vikander, a Swede. Vikander is fresh off the awards season, and this is the first role she’s landed since winning the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for The Danish Girl. Vikander also landed a supporting role in Jason Bourne, which filmed late last year and early this year, but I don’t think her part was very physical? I’m just saying… Vikander is a veteran of costume dramas, not physical action work. But I guess she impressed producers. Alicia Vikander has been cast today as Lara Croft for MGM, Warner Bros and GK Films in Tomb Raider. The reboot will tell the story of a young and untested Lara Croft fighting to survive her first adventure. Roar Uthaug (The Wave) is directing. MGM and Warner Bros are co-producing the film with MGM overseeing production. They acquired film rights from GK Films, which had previously purchased film rights in 2011 from Square Enix LTD. Graham King is serving as producer. This is the latest plum role for Vikander, and arguably her highest-profile one yet. She next co-stars in Jason Bourne opposite Matt Damon. Her success continues to rise following a successful 2015 that saw her performance in Tom Hooper’s The Danish Girl win an Academy Award for best supporting actress as well as a memorable turn in Ex Machina as possibly the best-looking and ruthless robot in the history of cinema. She also has The Light Between Oceans opposite Michael Fassbender in the pipelines. That film has been generating awards-season buzz even though it will not be released before the end of the year. This was a role that every young actress was after with Daisy Ridley, Cara Delevigne, Emilia Clarke and Saoirse Ronan all rumored at some point. Vikander looks a strong choice for this potential franchise, given she has form with a perfect English accent. She is currently filming Submergence for Wim Wenders opposite James McAvoy. [From Deadline] “…Given she has form with a perfect English accent…” If you say so, Deadline. Given the shortlist, I do think Vikander was probably the strongest choice, side-by-side with Daisy Ridley. I kind of wonder if Daisy would have been a bigger contender for this role if only her schedule for Star Wars was a bit looser. Anyway… this Lara Croft reboot was never going to be for me. It’s for a new generation of fan-boys and fan-girls who want to see a different, less buxom version of Lara Croft. I wish them well and I hope the scripts are better than the Jolie-version scripts. Also… The Light Between Oceans got pushed back for a fall release? I wonder if a lot of people want TLBO to just disappear. Given the absolutely awful source book, the movie was never going to be good. Photos courtesy of WENN, Fame/Flynet.

Pres. Obama’s final WH Correspondents Dinner: hilarious or bittersweet?

Embed from Getty Images President Barack Obama attended his final White House Correspondents Dinner last night, and as is usually the case, he was much funnier than the comedian guest. I enjoyed last year’s comedian, SNL’s Cecily Strong, but I could see how Larry Wilmore would be a good choice for Obama’s final WHCD. While Wilmore had some strong jokes – the childlike glee of the “Zodiac Killer” line was genuinely a favorite – Wilmore’s reception was pretty mixed and he misread the room at times. We’ll have more coverage and photos from the event tomorrow, I just wanted to post the speeches today. As for Obama, he just had so many great one-liners about Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton, Ted Cruz, Michelle, his presidency and more. Around the 24-minute mark of this video is the special video the White House made called “Couch Commander” about what he’s going to do in DC post-presidency. Yeah… I’m going to miss Obama so much when he leaves office. No matter who wins the presidency, I’m really just going to miss him. We had a “cool” president, a funny president, but even more than that: we had a smart, compassionate, even-tempered president. And here’s Larry Wilmore’s bit. He made a lot of “black jokes” and he even used the n-word at the end of his speech. It made me uncomfortable, but Obama rolled with it. Michelle Obama looked amazing in this golden, glittery Givenchy! The president is right, she hasn’t aged a day in eight years. Prince Harry got the Queen involved with trash-talking America ahead of Invictus

Many of you already discussed this in Friday’s KING HARRY post, but it’s worth dedicating a full post to this. The Invictus Games are almost here, and this year’s games are being held in Florida. Considering First Lady Michelle Obama’s dedicated work with military families and veterans, she’s been all over the Invictus Games and she and Prince Harry have gotten quite close in the past few years in particular. Even when the Obamas came for dinner at Kensington Palace, Michelle and Harry were the only ones who greeted each other as intimate friends (Harry couldn’t help but go in for a kiss, right in front of the PRESIDENT!). The point is that Michelle and Harry enjoy each other. Michelle is one of us, I suspect: she sees Harry as the dirty-sexy, roguish ginger snap that we see too. So, on Friday, the First Lady and Pres. Obama issued a video challenge to Harry and Team Britain ahead of the Invictus Games: Hey, @KensingtonRoyal! Are you ready for @InvictusOrlando? Game on. pic.twitter.com/S34KrEv5Is — The First Lady (@FLOTUS) April 29, 2016 Which is so cute. First the KP Twitter account tweeted out some special messages which came directly from Harry (as denoted by the “-H”). Wow @FLOTUS and @POTUS, some @weareinvictus fighting talk there! You can dish it out, but can you take it? – H. — Kensington Palace (@KensingtonRoyal) April 29, 2016 .@FLOTUS @POTUS How on Earth am I going to top that? ? – H — Kensington Palace (@KensingtonRoyal) April 29, 2016 Then the KP account retweeted this from David Wiseman, the captain of the British team. @FLOTUS @KensingtonRoyal @InvictusOrlando Tell that Paul Revere chap of yours to get his horse warmed up: The British are coming!! — David Wiseman (@wiseshow) April 29, 2016 Ooooh, shots fired!! You know it’s going down when a Brit starts sh-t talking PAUL REVERE. Before the Yanks could set fire to #AllTheTea, Harry decided to drop the coup de grace of sh-t talking though: he involved Her Majesty the Queen. Mic drop. BOOM. Unfortunately for you @FLOTUS and @POTUS I wasn't alone when you sent me that video ? – H.https://t.co/sjfSQvkzb6 — Kensington Palace (@KensingtonRoyal) April 29, 2016 First of all, does Harry just call FLOTUS “Michelle”? O RLY? While this trash-talking was obviously planned out, I still love it. I love that the Queen played along. I love that Harry pulled out the big guns with the Queen. What I don’t love? That Michelle hasn’t responded. Yet. Michelle will make him pay. Probably by making Harry give her a foot rub. Photos courtesy of Fame/Flynet and WENN.

Hot Guy Friday: Prince Harry wore a tux for the BT Sports Industry Awards

Yay, it’s Friday! It’s been a bitch of a week and we needed to end the week with Prince Harry (KING HARRY) in a tuxedo. King Harry with his tongue. YES! Honk for Harry’s Tongue. These photos are from last night’s BT Sports Industry Awards in London. Harry was there with a crew from Team Britain for the Invictus Games, which are coming up very, very soon. Harry was with his blokes, his friends, his mates. So of course he was happy and loose. He was also fussing with his tuxedo, like he couldn’t wait to take it off and… well, I’ll just let your mind wander. At the event, the MC Mark Durden-Smith made some jokes about how Harry needed to marry Cheryl Cole/Cheryl Fernandez-Versini. Durden-Smith said: “I know you take your royal duties very seriously Harry and I think one of the duties that the nation would like you to perform is to marry Cheryl Fernandez-Versini. It’s what the nation wants Harry so give it some thought.” Apparently, Harry “raised an eyebrow as he mused on the suggestion.” I know Britain is obsessed with Cheryl, but honestly… Harry could do better. Plus, she’s brunette and I just don’t think he’ll end up married to a brunette. He is just so g—damn cute, you guys. I could stare at this photo of Harry staring down the camera lens for a really long time. Photos courtesy of WENN.

Diane Kruger slams ‘drunk’ Peter O’Toole: ‘He wasn’t the most pleasant person’

Embed from Getty Images Remember the movie Troy? Brad Pitt starred as Achilles, Orlando Bloom was Paris, Eric Bana was Hector (ROWR), Peter O’Toole was Priam and Diane Kruger was Helen of Troy. It actually did have a great cast and it did well at the box office, but the film was not all that great. Apparently, it wasn’t a great experience for Diane Kruger either. Diane and Norman Reedus interviewed each other for Buzzfeed to promote their new movie, and Diane ended up throwing some major shade on the late Peter O’Toole. Keep in mind… O’Toole was 71 years old around the time that they were filming Troy, and he had been a life-long hellraiser and drunk. And Kruger was somewhat surprised to find him drunk and exhausted. Diane on her worst costar: “You know who wasn’t very pleasant, was Peter O’Toole…It kind of sucked. He’s dead, so I can say that. But he wasn’t the most pleasant person. He was just a drunk, and Peter O’Toole. You know, he had a two-day part, and I played Helen of Troy and he was Peter O’Toole, and he just wanted to make sure that everybody knew that he was Peter O’Toole. And he could barely make it up the stairs. We were on a set that was – you know, you have to climb, like, I don’t know, 100 steps to go up. He was just – first of all, everybody thought he was gonna die right there and then. Because it was, you know, 120 degrees, and he had to walk up 100 stairs. And he was very old, and very drunk.” Reedus on her story: “It’s kind of like the story of Elvis on the toilet with a peanut butter sandwich, like, I don’t wanna hear it.” Diane: “You just asked me!…He was great. You would’ve loved him! You guys would’ve, like, been drinking together and it would’ve been great.” [From The Daily Mail] I think less of Kruger for talking this way about A) someone who is dead and B) an acting legend. First of all, when someone dies, that’s not when you should slam them! O’Toole was a notorious drunk/alcoholic, as he discussed at length in his memoirs and interviews. My guess is that he didn’t really take the Troy gig seriously (very few people did, judging from the acting) and decided to just phone it in, half-drunk. Was it unprofessional? Sure. But still, I feel like complaining about it after the man is dead is sort of uncool too. O’Toole was acting poorly on a two-day job, in 120-degree heat, while half-in-the-bag. A lot of people would have dined out on that story for years! Photos courtesy of Getty, WENN.
