Matt Damon endorses Hillary for President: she understands the issue of water

Matt Damon is covering Town and Country’s June/July philanthropist issue. He talks about his work with Water.org, a charity he co-founded which brings clean water to the third world, and he endorses Hillary Clinton for President. I pegged Damon for a Bernie guy, but it sounds like he’s personally met with Hillary and knows that she’s committed to this issue. Plus it’s possible that he’s endorsing Hillary because it was thought that she had already statistically won the primary, although Bernie is giving her a good fight. (No disrespect to Hillary supporters and I swear I will vote for her!) Damon also discusses how he got involved with this charity. On the impact of being a celebrity and the influence that comes with it: “I became famous. It’s surreal to suddenly wake up to one day and have a larger sphere of influence than you ever anticipated. You genuinely want to do good in the world, but you’re going to make a lot of missteps. People started asking me to come to this gala or that. And then I would find my name associated with things that I didn’t know anything about. I didn’t want to be somebody at whom people rolled their eyes, thinking, ‘What is he doing, getting into the middle of this kind of stuff?’ And that’s why, once my life stabilized a little—my career was going pretty well, my wife was pregnant—I decided to get very serious about one thing.” On lack of access to uncontaminated water in areas where water is ubiquitous: “We don’t know anyone who goes thirsty. We have faucets everywhere. Our toilet water is cleaner than what 663 million people drink. The crisis in Flint, Michigan, ironically, is one of the first times, at least in my memory, that Americans have become aware of just how necessary clean water is, and the dire consequences of not having it.” On his endorsement of Hillary Clinton for President—because of water: “She understands it from a number of different angles—as a national security issue, as a human rights issue, and, obviously, its impact on women and girls. This is not a partisan issue, which is one really good thing about it. We’ve talked in equal parts to Republican and Democratic senators and congressmen.” On children missing school due to lack of clean water “One child dies every 90 seconds because of water-borne illnesses. It’s completely insane. But beyond just senseless death, this is robbing people of their humanity, of their hopes and dreams. And also of simple day-to-day things, like a kid having time to play.” [From Town and Country, received via email] Read the first paragraph above. Doesn’t it sound like his decision to go into charity work was image-driven rather than issue-driven? He’s serious and committed to this cause, I’m not questioning his involvement, I’m just saying that he describes his initial interest as a desire to control the narrative around him. Damon is calculated and careful with his public image and you can see that in how he reuses talking points, although he rarely talks about it. That said, he also focused on one thing so well that he brought worldwide awareness and money to an important cause. Water.org is an extremely effective and high-regarded charity and Damon has absolutely made a difference in the world. The full interview includes a nice story from Damon about how he talked to a 13 year-old girl in Haiti who had just received clean water in her village for the first time. The girl, who was top of her class, told Damon that she would use her extra free time to play. Damon said her answer “buckled my knees.” He also explained that he has four daughters and that he often hears how a lack of clean water affects girls especially. Embed from Getty Images

Jay Z: The REAL Reason He Skipped the Met Gala

Beyonce and Jay Z have been the talk of the entertainment world ever since she released her controversial “Lemonade” album less than two weeks ago. The great majority of the chatter has centered on the album’s lyrics, through which Bey calls out her husband for cheating and threatens divorce if it ever happens again. But throughout the media melee, the couple have remained suspiciously silent on the subject. A week after the album dropped, Beyonce attended the highly publicized Met Gala, but conspicuously absent was her husband. In fact, Jay Z’s no-show raised eyebrows everywhere. After all, Beyonce just announced to the world that her husband was a cheating sack of sh*t, and now she’s attending one of the most high-profile events of the year solo? However, a source tells E! News that Jay Z skipped the ball so the focus could remain on Bey and her new album. “They thought it was a good move that Beyonce go alone this year to the Met,” reveals the insider. View Slideshow: 2016 MET Gala: Worst-Dressed Stars! “They aren’t fighting but they thought it would be a better look if she came solo for her new album and all the hype that was attached to it.” According to a separate source, Queen Bey was cool with it “She was in a group that included Olivier [Rousteing], her sister and her sister’s husband,” the insider says. “They were hanging in their area having a great time.” While neither one have addressed the cheating allegations, Beyonce assured fans her marriage was on solid ground during a concert kicking off her “Lemonade” tour in Miami. “I want to dedicate this song to my beautiful husband. I love you so much,” she told the audience. Nevertheless, Jay Z was booed in Miami by the Beyhive around the same time. “Everywhere HOV goes, people are looking at him with a stank face,” a source revealed. Our guts are telling us that avoidance of further stank face could be real reason Jay Z chose to ditch the Met. That, and avoidance of further elevator attacks by Solange Knowles. Alicia Vikander cast as the new, rebooted Lara Croft: great choice or meh?

The last time we heard anything about the reboot of the Lara Croft franchise, it was last month, when we learned that Daisy Ridley was in talks to play Lara. The reboot, we heard, would focus on Lara’s earlier years, her college-student years, before she became the buxom Tomb Raider played by Angelina Jolie. Daisy is 24 years old, and while petite, would have been able to handle the physicality of the role. But producers decided to go with someone else: 27-year-old Alicia Vikander, a Swede. Vikander is fresh off the awards season, and this is the first role she’s landed since winning the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for The Danish Girl. Vikander also landed a supporting role in Jason Bourne, which filmed late last year and early this year, but I don’t think her part was very physical? I’m just saying… Vikander is a veteran of costume dramas, not physical action work. But I guess she impressed producers. Alicia Vikander has been cast today as Lara Croft for MGM, Warner Bros and GK Films in Tomb Raider. The reboot will tell the story of a young and untested Lara Croft fighting to survive her first adventure. Roar Uthaug (The Wave) is directing. MGM and Warner Bros are co-producing the film with MGM overseeing production. They acquired film rights from GK Films, which had previously purchased film rights in 2011 from Square Enix LTD. Graham King is serving as producer. This is the latest plum role for Vikander, and arguably her highest-profile one yet. She next co-stars in Jason Bourne opposite Matt Damon. Her success continues to rise following a successful 2015 that saw her performance in Tom Hooper’s The Danish Girl win an Academy Award for best supporting actress as well as a memorable turn in Ex Machina as possibly the best-looking and ruthless robot in the history of cinema. She also has The Light Between Oceans opposite Michael Fassbender in the pipelines. That film has been generating awards-season buzz even though it will not be released before the end of the year. This was a role that every young actress was after with Daisy Ridley, Cara Delevigne, Emilia Clarke and Saoirse Ronan all rumored at some point. Vikander looks a strong choice for this potential franchise, given she has form with a perfect English accent. She is currently filming Submergence for Wim Wenders opposite James McAvoy. [From Deadline] “…Given she has form with a perfect English accent…” If you say so, Deadline. Given the shortlist, I do think Vikander was probably the strongest choice, side-by-side with Daisy Ridley. I kind of wonder if Daisy would have been a bigger contender for this role if only her schedule for Star Wars was a bit looser. Anyway… this Lara Croft reboot was never going to be for me. It’s for a new generation of fan-boys and fan-girls who want to see a different, less buxom version of Lara Croft. I wish them well and I hope the scripts are better than the Jolie-version scripts. Also… The Light Between Oceans got pushed back for a fall release? I wonder if a lot of people want TLBO to just disappear. Given the absolutely awful source book, the movie was never going to be good. Photos courtesy of WENN, Fame/Flynet.

Prince Harry got the Queen involved with trash-talking America ahead of Invictus

Many of you already discussed this in Friday’s KING HARRY post, but it’s worth dedicating a full post to this. The Invictus Games are almost here, and this year’s games are being held in Florida. Considering First Lady Michelle Obama’s dedicated work with military families and veterans, she’s been all over the Invictus Games and she and Prince Harry have gotten quite close in the past few years in particular. Even when the Obamas came for dinner at Kensington Palace, Michelle and Harry were the only ones who greeted each other as intimate friends (Harry couldn’t help but go in for a kiss, right in front of the PRESIDENT!). The point is that Michelle and Harry enjoy each other. Michelle is one of us, I suspect: she sees Harry as the dirty-sexy, roguish ginger snap that we see too. So, on Friday, the First Lady and Pres. Obama issued a video challenge to Harry and Team Britain ahead of the Invictus Games: Hey, @KensingtonRoyal! Are you ready for @InvictusOrlando? Game on. pic.twitter.com/S34KrEv5Is — The First Lady (@FLOTUS) April 29, 2016 Which is so cute. First the KP Twitter account tweeted out some special messages which came directly from Harry (as denoted by the “-H”). Wow @FLOTUS and @POTUS, some @weareinvictus fighting talk there! You can dish it out, but can you take it? – H. — Kensington Palace (@KensingtonRoyal) April 29, 2016 .@FLOTUS @POTUS How on Earth am I going to top that? ? – H — Kensington Palace (@KensingtonRoyal) April 29, 2016 Then the KP account retweeted this from David Wiseman, the captain of the British team. @FLOTUS @KensingtonRoyal @InvictusOrlando Tell that Paul Revere chap of yours to get his horse warmed up: The British are coming!! — David Wiseman (@wiseshow) April 29, 2016 Ooooh, shots fired!! You know it’s going down when a Brit starts sh-t talking PAUL REVERE. Before the Yanks could set fire to #AllTheTea, Harry decided to drop the coup de grace of sh-t talking though: he involved Her Majesty the Queen. Mic drop. BOOM. Unfortunately for you @FLOTUS and @POTUS I wasn't alone when you sent me that video ? – H.https://t.co/sjfSQvkzb6 — Kensington Palace (@KensingtonRoyal) April 29, 2016 First of all, does Harry just call FLOTUS “Michelle”? O RLY? While this trash-talking was obviously planned out, I still love it. I love that the Queen played along. I love that Harry pulled out the big guns with the Queen. What I don’t love? That Michelle hasn’t responded. Yet. Michelle will make him pay. Probably by making Harry give her a foot rub. Photos courtesy of Fame/Flynet and WENN.

Bethenny Frankel: Minority companies should hire white spokesmen (Update)

Embed from Getty Images To be fair to a woman who has established that she’s a racist a-hole, we are relying on secondhand accounts of a talk which Bethenny Frankel gave to a room of women business owners, at a conference called Project Entrepreneur. Jezebel compiled the responses to Bethenny’s speech and several attendees were outraged. Bethenny allegedly (again this is secondhand as there is no video) told minority women that they should hire white male spokespeople for their businesses. Several attendees tweeted about this. Bethenny also reportedly suggested using sex for business purposes. When two women of color got up during the Q&A session to tell Bethenny how wrong she was, they were shut down. An entrepreneur named Mary Pryor blogged about her experience trying to question Bethenny about her offensive speech: I was one of the women who tried to stand up to reality TV star and Skinny Girl Vodka founder, Bethenny Frankel, at a women’s entrepreneurial summit over the weekend. And was silenced. As a participant in Rent The Runway’s and UBS’s Project Entrepreneur, a new initiative to equip women founders with the tools and advice they need to thrive in the marketplace, I was stunned when Frankel implied that women should have sex with men in exchange for capital. I was offended when she expressed some kind of kinship with black women because she’s “loud.” And I was taken aback when she advised those of us in the room to get business advice to hire a white man as the face of our companies. The session was not recorded, but it caused a firestorm both in New York City, where the event took place, and on social media. Another female founder of color, Naomi Hirabayashi of Shine Text, was just as disturbed given this response. Many of the women of color in the audience turned their heads in shock. Some took to the mic, prepared to address the inflammatory remarks. While Frankel’s flawed advice comes with unfortunate truths regarding access to funding- white men do get the lion’s share of venture capital funding while black women founders don’t seem to even register on the radar. This phenomenon was most recently covered in Digital Undivided’s #ProjectDiane report; it’s clear tech has a long way to go when it comes to supporting black women founders. Armed with this knowledge, I weighed the pros and cons of responding to Frankel after I saw eye rolling, dismissive stares, and “Here she goes!” reactions from other women in the room but. Something needed to be said. Not even when the wrong-headedness was called to her attention, Frankel didn’t back down. Nothing. No apology. No acknowledgement of an ignorant reply. Just a comment from a moderator about “breaking up a fight” and removing the mic from our hands. Naomi and I stood there shaking our heads. We stood up to defend female founders of color. She stood up as an ally aware of bias and ignorance in tech. We came together respectfully and left disappointed. [From The Huffington Post via Jezebel] Project Entrepreneur has since apologized while Bethenny has tweeted some nonsense about color not mattering. You know that means she said all these obnoxious things. I don't care if ur woman, man, black, white, hispanic, green or purple. In biz & life be better than everyone else.Don't complain.Don't explain. — Bethenny Frankel (@Bethenny) April 13, 2016 Here are some tweets about this speech: (4) For @Bethenny to insist that a young, Black female founder "Find a white guy" to rep her biz is a racial microaggression #PEIntensive16 — Mary Pryor (@msmarypryor) April 11, 2016 To the brave black woman who asked what to do when ppl tell her to get a white man as the face of her org,Im so sorry for @Bethenny's answer — Marah Lidey (@marahml) April 9, 2016 Convo w/ @bethenny: should u do whatever it takes 2 succeed like hiring a white male spokesperson as a minority entrepreneur? #PEIntensive16 — Ellen Choi (@LNchoi) April 9, 2016 1.Hi @msmarypryor TY for standing up+speaking your mind. The fact that you felt shut down is completely contrary to the goals of the weekend — Project Entrepreneur (@pjtentrepreneur) April 11, 2016 We apologize to you and our guests. — Project Entrepreneur (@pjtentrepreneur) April 11, 2016 Project Entrepreneur went one further and tweeted that Bethenny was wrong, essentially and that “We believe that every founder is enough on her own. We disagree with any sentiments to the contrary.” I hope this means that businesses and organizations will think twice before giving Bethenny a platform, but then I see the orange idiot who’s running for president and realize that there are a lot of racists who are being given platforms lately. Update: Bethenny has denied saying this despite the many eyewitness accounts and she has gone on to block several people on Twitter insisting she said it. Kourtney Kardashian: Fighting With Scott Disick More Fun Than Fighting Boredom

Ah, family.  And television. AND RATINGS! If you’ve been living under a rock for the past three months, then welcome back!  Also, you missed some pretty important things, though none more important than Scott Disick’s re-entry into the Keeping Up With The Kardashians fold! “Scott has been filming for several weeks now,” a source close to the Kardashians told Radar Online. “He is being paid on a per-show basis under the assumption that he is sober. Scott goes through phases where he is a mess and burns it all down, followed by months of playing the role of responsible father. This is just how it is,” the source added. “Kris does not care about what is best for Scott anymore. She is using him for show ratings!” #Family “She knows that people want to watch Scott especially now that he is unstable,” the source went on.  “Also Kourtney gets bored when she’s not fighting with Scott and all of their drama did really well for the show last season.” Is it? A few months ago, GQ did a feature on celebrity club appearances, and accompanied Scott Disick to 1OAK in Las Vegas. One club goer was celebrating her 21st birthday at the club, and when asked why she wanted to spend it with Disick, she explained that he “is a dick, but he’s funny.” And there you have it. Kailyn Lowry & Javi Marroquin Fight Over Racy Photo, Unfollow Each Other on Twitter

After months of rumors that Javi Marroquin’s deployment has been putting their marriage to the test, Kailyn Lowry may have just kicked her husband to the curb in very public fashion. Javi has been overseas with the U.S. Air Force for the past three months, and photos of Marroquin with a mystery woman surfaced online shortly after he left, leading to reports that he and Kailyn had called it quits. At the time, sources close to the couple insisted they were still together, but now a different photo (and a different woman) may have caused Kailyn to pull the plug on her marriage of three years. In a truly bizarre twist, Marroquin seems to have ratted on himself by admitting on Twitter that he recently sent racy photos to a female friend. “The snap I just sent @Kimberlyyy_Rene #onmycalvinkleinshhh,” Marroquin tweeted, implying that he was in his underwear in the pic. Asked how she feels about the strange confession, Kailyn tweeted, “Borderline inappropriate but it is what it is.” She deleted the tweet moments later. Marroquin tagged Lowry in a tweet that read simply, “Don’t,” but he also deleted it. When a fan assured Marroquin that Lowry loves and misses him, the 23-year-old replined, “Haha too late.” At some point in the last 24 hours, both Kailyn and Javi stopped following each other on Twitter and Instagram. A rep for the couple recently issued a statement assuring fans that the couple is “not legally separated.” Not exactly encouraging words.
