Prince’s cause of death ruled to be accidental opiate overdose by fentanyl

It’s been six weeks since Prince passed tragically at his home just before he was scheduled to see an addiction specialist to seek treatment. The report on his cause of death has now been released. Prince’s death has been ruled an accidental opiate overdose. While Prince was said to be addicted to Percocet, the medical examiner found that the drug which killed him was fentanyl, another far more powerful opiate. Toxicology tests for Prince concluded that the entertainer died from an accidental overdose of the opioid fentanyl, according to a report on his death by the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office. Fentanyl, prescribed by doctors for cancer treatment, can be made illicitly and is blamed for a spike in overdose deaths in the United States. It’s 25 to 50 times more potent than heroin and 50 to 100 times more potent than morphine, according to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. Prince, whose full name was Prince Rogers Nelson, died April 21 at age 57, after being found unresponsive in an elevator at Paisley Park, his home and recording studio in Chanhassen, Minnesota. The report from the medical examiner’s office, which was released on Twitter, didn’t provide many details. “How injury occurred: The decedent self-administered fentanyl,” the report said. For manner of death, a box was marked for “accident.” The report didn’t specify how the drug was taken and if the fentanyl was prescribed or illegally made. The music superstar weighed 112 pounds and was 63 inches tall when he died, the report said. He was wearing a black cap, shirt, pants, boxer briefs and socks and a gray undershirt, the report said. His occupation was listed as “artist” and his business as “music.” The full autopsy and toxicology reports will not be released, the office told CNN. [From CNN] At 5’3″ and 112 pounds Prince was in the normal range with a BMI of 19.8 and was not technically underweight. NBC reports that he was being “being treated for opioid withdrawal, as well as anemia and a fatigue” at the time of his death. I’ve only heard of fentanyl in passing and was not aware that it had so much potential for abuse and for overdose. Many outlets are reporting how potent it is, it’s the most powerful opiate available and is 25 to 50 times stronger than heroin, along with the fact that it’s caused thousands of accidental deaths. According to experts quoted by People Magazine, the drug was originally meant to be used for pallative, or end of life care, but is now routinely given to patients who have become habituated to other opiates and aren’t getting the same pain relief. It’s unknown if Prince had a prescription or how he obtained the drug, but a criminal investigation is underway. This also brings attention to the street use of the drug, which can be highly deadly as users may not realize how much stronger fentanyl is than heroin. Just touching or inhaling the drug can be fatal. NBC News quotes the chief pathologist at Tufts University, Barbarajean Magnani, who says that Prince’s case is sadly all too common. “This was a man in his 50s who may have been struggling with pain and took a very potent opioid analgesic and died accidentally from an overdose. Vogue named Kanye West & Kim the ‘best dressed couple’ of the Met Gala

I felt guilty about admitting this yesterday, but I really enjoyed Kim Kardashian’s Balmain at the Met Gala. Like, out of all the Balmain gowns, I thought Kim’s was the best and most interesting. Does that mean that I thought Kim looked amazing? Eh. She looked better this year than in years past, but that’s not even the point. The point is that in 2016, Kim is one of those people we’re really excited to see, because everyone will have a really strong reaction to whatever she’s wearing. In just a few short years, Kim went from persona-non-grata in elite fashion communities to one of the most-discussed women at the biggest fashion events of the year. Page Six even had a piece about how Kim and her family “ruled” the Met Gala this year, and, according to one source, “they really work that room now…they really take it over. It’s like their party. Kim Kardashian went over really well. I gotta say, they worked the room the best. If you had to pick one group who ruled it, it was the Kardashians.” And that’s not all – Vogue Magazine (Vogue.com) named Kim and Kanye “the Met Gala’s Best-Dressed Couple.” I wouldn’t go that far, Vogue! I thought Gigi Hadid and Zayn Malik were more interesting, although it was mostly Zayn, not Gigi. You can read Vogue’s write-up about Kimye here. Since questions about feminism have been popular with entertainment journalists for the past few years, Aniston has been asked about her feminism several times, and she always maintains that yes, she is a feminist and no, she has no problem identifying that way. There’s no word-game about “humanism.” There’s no “but I like boys, thus I can’t be a feminist!” Well, as part of her People Magazine “Most Beautiful” cover, Aniston answered a lot of questions about different things, including feminism. And she cites Gloria Steinem as the person who taught her about feminism. She also talks about skinny jeans! Jennifer’s biggest beauty icon is Gloria Steinem. “I’ve always thought Gloria is quite stunning for many, many reasons besides her exterior. She’s taught me about feminism. There was a time when I was like, ‘I’m not quite sure I understand what this is?’ And she’s like, ‘It’s very simple: it’s just about equality. That’s all it is.’ She’s just taught me – have you seen her HBO documentary? I’ve seen it like eight times. She’s just a very beautiful, strong woman.” What Justin Theroux likes to see her wear: “Well, let me tell you. As for the feminism stuff… I think Jennifer could do much better than Gloria Steinem when it comes to feminist role models, but this is fine. Duchess Kate wears decade-old boots, skinny jeans for Bhutan hike: cute?

Embed from Getty Images It’s been said before, but it’s worth repeating: the Duchess of Cambridge is at her best when she gets to do something athletic. When the photo-op involves running, hiking or being sporty, she does well. So these photos are totally fine with me – William and Kate took a three-hour hike today in Bhutan. It was an uphill climb/hike to the Tiger’s Nest monastery built into a clifftop. It’s one of the biggest tourist sites in Bhutan, which brings me to another point that a lot of the royal reporters have been making… just like Will and Kate’s Australia/New Zealand tour two years ago, this tour has seemingly involved a lot of tourist activities, almost like this is a government-sponsored vacation. Of course Will and Kate wanted to see the Tiger’s Nest and of course they enjoyed themselves. But don’t call it a royal tour, you know? Call it what it is: a vacation. For the hours-long hike, Kate chose a decent ensemble. Meaning, at least she didn’t attempt a lengthy hike in wedges or heels. She actually pulled out some brown Penelope Chilvers boots which she’s had in her closet for more than a decade. Kate was actually wearing these boots in one of her most famous college-era photos (go here to see). The boots cost £475. She paired her old boots with skinny jeans (that likely have some stretch), a simple white blouse and the £495 Nubuck vest/waistcoat. I don’t understand why a three-hour hike wouldn’t have been a perfect moment for a ponytail, but then again, I’m not a duchess. Apparently, as they were hiking, Kate joked that they were “burning off the curry.” The Daily Mail also points out that William was working up a sweat but that Kate is so sporty that she was breezing through the hike. I love that the @KensingtonRoyal Twitter manager posted the butt shot like that was the big take-away image from the hike.
