Katie Holmes is playing Jackie Kennedy again: does she look authentic?

Back in 2010-11, Katie Holmes signed on to play Jackie Kennedy in The Kennedys, an eight-part cable miniseries. The miniseries was well-liked and award-winning, although Katie was not singled out for any awards or nominations for her Jackie portrayal. But someone thought it would be a good idea to get the gang back together for a sequel miniseries, The Kennedys: After Camelot. These are photos of Katie-as-Jackie filming in Toronto over the past few days. What do you think of her Jackie look? They got the hair right. I don’t know if this is a wig or if Katie’s hair can really do that, but the hair is very authentic-looking. The clothes sort of make me sad though. Post-JFK, Jackie’s style was simplified for the most part, but she always looked pulled together. I don’t think Katie is even wearing a bra in these photos. Hm. So, I looked up this new series, and there’s some other notable casting choices: Matthew Perry is playing Ted Kennedy, probably Ted circa Chappaquiddick. Alexander Siddig is playing Aristotle Onassis!! So now I’m jealous because Katie Holmes gets to have love scenes with Alexander Siddig. And let’s face it, Aristotle Onassis was not that attractive. Kate Moss & her 13-year-old daughter Lila Grace cover Vogue Italia: sweet?

Perhaps the “in” thing for magazines this year is mother-daughter covers? Cindy Crawford and her 14-year-old daughter Kaia covered Vogue Paris several months back, and many people loved and praised the image. And now this – Kate Moss and her 13-year-old daughter Lila Grace cover the new issue of Vogue Italia. Thoughts? I think Lila will look more like her mom as she gets into her mid-to-late teens. Right now, she’s just an interesting blend of both of her parents (her dad is Jefferson Hack). When Cindy and Kaia covered Vogue Paris in March, I sort of assumed that Cindy was trying to gently open some doors for her daughter, who already has representation at a modeling agency. Like, the deal between Kaia and Cindy is that Kaia can model but only if Cindy gets to be hands-on about her career. I wonder about Lila and Kate’s dynamic, whether Lila is even interested in modeling like her famous mum, or if Lila is just a normal kid, untouched by her mother’s career. Jefferson Hack did provide some clues in a recent interview, saying: “I spend a lot of time with Lila Grace. She’s 13 and my relationship with her and her mum, Kate, is the thing I’m most proud of. That is life with a capital L. Everything else is window dressing. I have Lila at least one night in the week and every other weekend. We use FaceTime most evenings. She thinks me and her mum are deeply uncool. I don’t think her music tastes are cool – Capital radio and Justin Bieber. She keeps me real. I’m not on Snapchat. It’s wrong when parents act like their kids. I don’t buy into the ‘my mum’s my best friend’ ethos. Kate’s a great mum and they have a fantastic relationship.” [From The Daily Mirror] Yes, when you’re 13 years old, everything about your parents is deeply and profoundly uncool, even if your mother is literally the coolest person in England. In Kate’s recent Edit cover interview, she even admitted that Lila isn’t even into clothes right now. So now I’m imagining Kate and Lila as Edina Monsoon and Saffy. It would be absolutely amazing if Kate Moss ended up with a tightly-wound conservative daughter who has no interest in clothes or cool parties. Elizabeth Olsen let her sisters dress her up like a goth ghost for the CFDAs

The CFDAs were held last night in New York. I generally find the CFDAs kind of boring, fashion-wise. It’s not the Met Gala and it’s not the Oscars. Some ladies try to do something different, but most people just look vaguely nice and not particularly noteworthy. Take the Olsen sisters – we’ve seen Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen look like Victorian ghosts a million times before. The only difference is that at the CFDAs, they dressed their little sister Elizabeth in The Row and now she looks like a Victorian ghost now too. More photos… Stephanie Sokolinski (Soko!!) looking tired in Gucci. It really is about styling with this woman, and I really, really want to take away her pink-brown eye makeup. The dress is fine (and it suits her) but I think she would look better with different hair and makeup. Adriana Lima in Marc Jacobs. I like that she wore pants. This outfit is nice. Riley Keough in Proenza Schouler. I’m actually not a fan of Proenza Schouler, I think the clothes usually look overworked and fashion-student-y. But this was one of my favorite dresses at the event. Jessica Chastain in Prabal Gurung. Love the dress, hate the styling. Chastain was doing so well, and I really thought she had gotten some better hair and makeup people. But maybe not. Because she should never, ever do her hair like this. Jennifer Hudson in Prabal Gurung. Pretty dress, but it feels too big and heavy for this event. I also don’t like how she matched her lipstick to the dress exactly. Photos courtesy of WENN.

Johnny Depp got into a drunken altercation with his bodyguard in Denmark

Johnny Depp has been on tour with his band (eyeroll) the Hollywood Vampires for the past week. They’ve been touring around Europe, and it’s led to some uncomfortable photo-ops. The Daily Mail got their hands on some exclusive photos of Depp surrounded by people in Denmark, at 2 am outside a bar/club – go here to see. He seems to be in the company of a few ladies and more than a few gentlemen. The DM says that a few of those gentlemen are Depp’s bodyguards, or perhaps the band’s bodyguards/roadies (they look more like roadies than bodyguards, in my opinion). I tend to think the Daily Mail has just made up a narrative to go along with the photos, but they do claim to have eyewitnesses, so maybe this is 100% real. Apparently, while Depp was in Denmark, he was boozing it up quite heavily, plus he was getting blackout-flirty with a mystery blonde. Plus he got into some kind of altercation with one of the bodyguards/roadies. So rock n’ roll. So scarfy. So charming. So youthful. A boozed-up Johnny Depp got into an altercation with one of his own bodyguards — as he cavorted with a mystery blonde in a Denmark bar late Wednesday, according to a report. The 52-year-old actor’s bodyguard was trying to persuade him to return to the Royal Hotel bar about 2:30 a.m., but Depp preferred to continue partying and swigging Champagne at a concert afterparty, the Daily Mail reported. Depp, who is touring Europe with his band The Hollywood Vampires, was celebrating in the wee hours with bandmates and crew members after a gig in the Danish city of Horsens. Depp was intent on “drinking and smoking a lot” with the blonde, witnesses said. “Johnny was in a party mood, that’s for sure,” an observer said. “His bodyguard had his hand on his shoulder and was trying to get him to go back inside, but Johnny refused to go. More and more fans came up to him and he wanted to talk to all of them and take selfies with them,” the witness said, the paper reported. “And the bodyguard got more and more persistent but Johnny didn’t want to go. … And he definitely drank his fair share of alcohol.” Photographs show the tattooed Depp — clad in a brown-and-black vest and white shirt — glaring furiously at the bodyguard as he tried to lead him away from several people. Meanwhile, a brunette seems to be trying to calm the volatile actor, putting his arm around her shoulder. “Johnny was the last one to leave the bar, even after everyone had finished the champagne and gone home, it was Johnny that went back to the bar,” the observer said. “To look at him last night, with his clothes from the show and the mascara and everything, he looked like he was Jack Sparrow one more time.” The actor was outside the hotel bar with the blonde for a couple of hours, the paper reported. “They smoked a lot and drank a lot,” another observer said. “Johnny was sitting at a table behind me at the time, before they went outside together. They were outside together for about two hours and looked very animated when they were talking. It looked like she was really leading the conversation, while he was listening to her. And she was smoking a lot the whole time and drinking from the bottle of bubbly. It’s clear they already knew each other. I stood by her when she was at the bar and she asked a woman for a light, and she was bought a white wine by an older man at the bar,” the person said. [From Page Six] This sounds like “obvious story is obvious.” I’m almost positive that Depp is in the throes of addiction, and I’m almost positive that this is Depp bottoming out. Most addiction-experts believe that you’re just supposed to stand back and let the addict hit rock bottom on their own and then, hopefully, they will acknowledge that they need help. But Depp’s downward spiral seems to be less self-harming and more violent-towards-other-people. Don’t get me wrong, he’s self-destructive too. But he’s so cushioned by yes-men and sycophants that I’m more concerned for the people around him who get caught up – physically and emotionally – in his downward spiral. And if Depp is really taking out sh-t on the people who get paid to look after him? Well, maybe Amber Heard will have even more witnesses. Elizabeth Olsen won’t buy a house in LA because the paparazzi are ‘crippling’

Elizabeth Olsen covers the latest issue of Elle Canada. I’m not loving the editorial, but that’s mostly because I don’t think Olsen was well-served by the magazine’s stylists. In my opinion, she looks better in very clean styles and more natural, barely-there makeup. Elle Canada overloaded her with boho clothes and pink lipstick. As for the interview, she comes across a bit better in this piece than she did in her recent Times Style magazine piece. But there’s still something that bugs me: it’s a feeling of “are you really as famous as you think you are?” The way she complains about the paparazzi and the lengths she goes to in maintaining her “privacy,” you’d think she was Angelina Jolie or, hell, Blake Lively. It just doesn’t seem to match up to Olsen’s actual level of fame. Although, to be fair to her, she’s been dealing with crazy Tom Hiddleston-fans for more than a year, so maybe she does need to be careful. You can read the full interview here. Some highlights: She wants to be low-key: “A lot of the time in my life, I try not to take up space—I just want to disappear into a wall. And then eventually, when I’m around people I feel confident with, I’ll take up more space.” Moving between Marvel films & indies: “The only thing I care about is if the team is great, the script is good and the character is someone I can connect to in my gut. After that, it’s just a fun f–king job. I don’t have any regrets—I was just so happy to be working—but I was forcing myself not to give power to ‘the system.’ But the system does have power, and I’ve learned how to use it. It’s smarter than to ignore it.” She doesn’t want a social media presence: “I just have an old-school mindset. Also, girls I look up to, like Jennifer Lawrence, Rooney Mara and Alicia Vikander, don’t have it, and it hasn’t affected their careers remotely. I’d rather live as private a life as I can. I’m not trying to be a mysterious person, but I’d rather be seen as an actor from job to job. I’ve never lived my life trying to be an influencer; I’m happy keeping my own opinions for fun dinner conversation.” She won’t discuss her love life: Olsen says it’s just something that is “in her bones” and influenced heavily by her notoriously private older sisters. “From an outside point of view, people have an interest in people they’ve seen grow up. But no one in my family has ever cared to feed into that or make it more interesting than it is because, really, it’s not.” She doesn’t like fan mail either: “When I’m filming on location, our production office is listed and people send stuff. It makes me uncomfortable. I don’t want people to know what I’m up to or where I am.” She rents a house in LA & she has a roommate: “The moment I own a house, it becomes public knowledge,” she says, going on to describe the “crippling” nature of paparazzi in L.A., where, after being spotted, she won’t go home for several hours in case they follow her. “It’s pretty violating. At night when you can’t see anything because the flashes blind you, that’s really disconcerting.” [From Elle Canada] I understand just wanting to be a jobbing actress. I understand wanting to withhold part of yourself from the media. I even understand what she says about learning how to play the game and work “the system” to her advantage. But I feel like I’m hallucinating a little bit when she goes on and on about how she can’t own a house because then they know where you live and she’ll get pap’d every day. Maybe she’s really, really good at hiding out already, but there are RARELY candid photos of Olsen in LA or anywhere else. She gets photographed at premieres, media events and fashion events. She got pap’d in London when she went on a date with Tom Hiddleston last year. And beyond that… nothing. So is she really good at hiding out, or is she just not as famous as she thinks she is? Claire Danes’ Met gown was ‘custom fiber optic organza with battery packs’

My favorite gown at the Met Gala, and the one that I thought best captured the theme, was Claire Danes’ Cinderella style Zac Posen, an impressive gown in its own right which went to the next level by glowing and sparkleingwith the lights off. Many of you said that the theme Manus x Machina (hand and machine) was more than just technology meets design, that it was meant to incorporate both traditional hand design methods, like the intricate feathering on Zoe Saldana’s Dolce & Gabbana, and more modern technology, like the perfectly circular machine-cut grommets on Kate Mara’s dress. I think that’s accurate now that I’ve read through the whole theme description. Although I find that theme too all-encompassing I can now appreciate how more traditional dresses did fit the theme. Some of them still seemed phoned in to me, and I would have liked to see more designs with tech features built in, but I see your point. Entertainment Weekly has an interview with Posen, who described the technology behind the dress that had everyone talking. It was made with a fibric optic material which transmitted light and had 30 battery packs built in to run it. Next year, I want to see recycled gowns (like Emma Watson’s) with solar-paneled lights. I kid but that would be fun. Plus imagine owning clothes that glow without batteries. As long as it didn’t attract bugs outside I would want that. Here’s more, from EW: Posen set out to create a gown that highlighted “the place where technology and fantasy meet.” Made of custom fiber optic woven organza with 30 mini battery packs sewn into a thin organza lining, the result was a haute couture design that reflects his experimental approach to fashion. “We custom developed the fabrication, because I wanted to create something that had a transparency to it, but an illumination to it.” And though the major glam factor came from the light bright factor, even the smallest details — like its raw-edged hem — were considered ahead of the gown’s red carpet debut. “I think fashion has become something called fashiontainment,” reflects Posen. “And it’s our job as dreamers and creators to push that.” That said, the pale blue, princess-style dress required 600 hours of work from Posen and his six-person team, and paid off when social media declared the dress a Cinderella moment. “It’s always great when something resonates and creates a visceral reaction,” says Posen, who has incorporated tech-inspired designs in previous collections and worked with Google’s Made with Code program. [From Entertainment Weekly] Here’s the video again: Magic moments!! Zacposen #metgala #clairedanes A video posted by @zacposen on May 2, 2016 at 7:11pm PDT Some of you didn’t like this gown and I know that Lainey called it “gimmicky.” I usually agree with her, but I thought this was a beautiful fantasy, like something you would see on film created with CGI only achieved in real life. Posen designed with light, and this gown was incredible. EW also reports that Claire had to return the dress by midnight and that she changed for the after party. It’s not specified in the story, but if this gown goes on display at the MET I’m going to visit it. I’m getting goosebumps imagining seeing it lit up. Kelly Ripa is on vacation now and is ghosting Michael Strahan

Embed from Getty Images I’m surprised how much interest there’s been in the Kelly Ripa and Michael Strahan drama happening at ABC and I’m also surprised at the sheer number of stories about it. There are a massive amount of details coming out. While I was team Kelly yesterday and am still on her side I am starting to get the impression that she’s somewhat petty too. She came out of her townhouse in New York yesterday carrying a copy of Malcolm Gladwell’s David and Goliath, which seems to be a transparent metaphor for her situation with the big bad network. People is reporting that Kelly “jetted off to the Turks and Caicos islands to celebrate her 20th anniversary right after learning that her co-host Michael Strahan was leaving their show,” but this is not supported by paparazzi photos of her outside her townhouse yesterday. She heard Strahan was leaving on Tuesday, so maybe “right after” means the next day. The Ny Daily News has a very pro-Strahan piece about how he was professional in announcing his exit (remember that he was allegedly under orders not to tell her) and gave her several months’ notice considering that he’s not leaving until the end of the summer. He’s also been trying to contact Kelly, according to a source, but she’s not responding to him at all. He keeps calling, but she won’t pick up the phone. Michael Strahan has repeatedly tried to reach out to co-host Kelly Ripa but has been rebuffed, Confidenti@l has learned. “He’s reached out but there’s been no response,” a source close to the show said. Strahan shocked Ripa and “Live!” executive producer Michael Gelman Tuesday when he revealed to them in a post-show meeting that he was leaving “Live! With Kelly and Michael” to join “Good Morning America” full time. “He did the right thing and gave them a lot of notice that he was leaving at the end of the summer,” a second show source said. “He’s been there all week for the staff, she on the other hand has disappeared.” Ripa — who called out sick Wednesday and then took what a show rep says was a “planned vacation” — looked perfectly healthy as she exited her Upper East Side townhouse clutching a copy of Malcom Gladwell’s “David and Goliath: Underdogs, Misfits and the Art of Battling Giants.” [From NY Daily News] The NY Daily News also points out that Strahan didn’t attend a scheduled charity co-hosting event Tuesday night for the NYC Food Bank. He did send a video message though. Strahan, 44, was also photographed out with his 27 year-old girlfriend in their workout clothes yesterday. They’ve been dating over a year, and she doesn’t pass the “half his age plus seven” rule by a couple of years. Strahan appeared yesterday on both Live, co-hosting with Erin Andrews, and Good Morning America, which he’s set to join full time in September. On GMA he credited Kelly with teaching him the ropes and called her “family.” There were rumors that GMA’s Lara Spencer felt shafted by Strahan’s appointment at the show because she was hoping to get a promotion to the position he’s taking as lead anchor. A source denies to E! that Spencer is upset and states “Lara and Michael are very close friends.” People is reporting that Strahan will double his salary by moving to GMA and will be making $20 million a year. Ripa reportedly makes around $15 million at Live. CNN is reporting that execs plan to test out other co-hosts for Ripa once Strahan leaves this fall and they’re not planning on canceling the show as rumored. I wonder if they’re rethinking that now that Kelly is MIA and her people have talked to just about every outlet. Embed from Getty Images Embed from Getty Images Embed from Getty Images
