Coachella: Taylor Swift went ultra-blonde, Miranda Kerr brought her billionaire

Some years, I’m prepared for the wall-to-wall photos of millionaires pretending to be hippies. Some years, Coachella starts and I’m caught unawares. But every year, I’m mystified as to why the same people go every damn year. Weirdly, Taylor Swift is not one of those people. She dropped by Coachella on Day 1. Of course she had to post a photo of her newly ultra-bleached hair. So far, that’s the biggest news that’s come out of Coachella. So, enjoy these photos from the first weekend. This year’s Coachella might be perfectly encapsulated by these photos of Miranda Kerr and Evan Spiegel. Miranda is one of the most famous models in the world, and Spiegel is the billionaire founder of Snapchat. But they too can “hang” with the cool kids at Coachella. Spiegel’s even hiding his face, for reasons, dude. Paris Hilton, man. She’s there every year. Kendall Jenner looks like hippie Barbie. Cindy Crawford and Rande Gerber. You might think, “Hey, why in the world are Rande & Cindy there? Are they conducting a global search for a new pair of couple-friends after George abandoned them?” While that was my first thought, I think Cindy and Rande were just trying to be the “cool parents” who took their kids to Coachella. There are photos of Kaia Gerber floating around, and I feel confident that Cindy was at least acting as the adult supervision. Brooklyn Beckham is still getting a big “nope” from me. Maybe in a few years, he won’t annoy me so much. On a scale of 1-10, how annoying do you find Alessandra Ambrosio? She’s an 8.5 to me. Jared Leto, man. At least his hair looks okay here. Who had the best dress & jewels at the Tiffany Blue Book Ball in NYC?

Here are some photos from Friday night’s Tiffany Blue Book Ball in NYC. Four major actresses/celebrities came out for the event, and considering they were all DRIPPING in fabulous jewels, I totally believe that Tiffany’s paid them all to be there, looking fabulous and wearing certain high-end pieces. Those ladies? Jessica Biel, Diane Kruger, Reese Witherspoon and Naomi Watts. I’m trying to include some close-ups of the jewels too. First up, here’s Jessica Biel in The Row. I’m starting with the worst, just FYI. While Mary-Kate and Ashley’s The Row is a well-respected line, I always struggle to understand why anyone thinks this looks good? This dress looks so cheap and basic. Biel doesn’t help the underwhelming dress either, she was aiming for less-is-more and she just looked like she was in desperate need of lipstick and a hairstylist. Diane Kruger knows how to stand out. This Kaufmanfranco look would have looked ridiculous on another woman, but Diane is killing it. Also, Diane got the BEST necklace. Diamonds, emeralds, aquamarines, sapphires, possibly some tourmalines? It’s really gorgeous. The silhouette on Reese Witherspoon’s J. Mendel dress is incredibly flattering, but I still don’t really care for the look as a whole. I think the flower applique/beading sort of morphs into something moldy-looking. And I wish Reese had done something else with her hair. Still, the necklace she got to wear? Perfection. CB loves Naomi Watts while I’m sort of meh on Watts and her style. She never looks hideous, but sometimes I do think Watts is stuck in a style rut. This Prada is a good example – I know why Naomi picked it, it’s because she thinks ice-blue looks good with her coloring, and because she likes these frothy, light dresses. But no one on her styling team realized that the ice blue was very similar to the “Tiffany Blue” of the background, which means Naomi looks like she’s blending into the wall. Prince William & Kate did their final tour photo-op in front of the Taj Mahal

Embed from Getty Images We’re finally at the end of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s exhaustive India-Bhutan royal tour. The tour did not go off without a hitch, although I have to say… it felt like Will and Kate kept up a tighter, busier schedule than they have for previous tours. They saved “the best for last,” meaning they saved the biggest photo-op for their very last day. They flew out of Bhutan early this morning and went back to India for the Taj Mahal photo-op. Several months ago, I wouldn’t have said this photo-op was any big deal – after all, most tourists moving through India try to see the Taj Mahal. But Will and Kate made such a big deal about Princess Diana’s connection to the Taj and how they were going there to “create new memories,” so it became a big deal, likely the biggest part of their tour. Apparently it was 109 degrees Fahrenheit (aka hot as balls) in Agra today and both Will and Kate were sweating a bit, as we all would be. Still, Kate chose not to pull her hair up, because of course she didn’t. Kate also chose to wear a Indian-American designer, Naeem Khan. This dress has a STRAIGHT SKIRT, people! We’re on high alert! Kate realized that she couldn’t flash everyone at the Taj Mahal, so she consciously chose a straight skirt, not some light, un-weighted full skirt. Princess Diana also wore a straight-ish wrap skirt when she went to the Taj Mahal (alone). But… Kate didn’t attempt a redo/homage of Diana’s look, thankfully. Diana paired purple with red and white. Kate did blue and white. You’ll also notice that the scaffolding still appears on the Taj Mahal, so the Cambridges didn’t get their way in asking for the scaffolding to be taken down for their photo-op. PS… I missed a few outfits in Bhutan, but over the next few days, I’ll be doing some wrap-up stories on the tour and some of the minor controversies, so we’ll have those fashion pics in the coming days, don’t worry! Here are some photos from last night’s LA premiere of Mother’s Day, the latest Garry Marshall-directed holiday monstrosity. In this post, we are going to be discussing Business Shorts/Cocktail Shorts and whether they are ever a good idea. First, let me say – I don’t think Jennifer Aniston and Julia Roberts meant to both do Business Shorts for the premiere. Meaning, I think if Jennifer knew that Julia was going to do shorts, Jen probably would have gone with a cocktail dress. The fact that they both did Business/Cocktail shorts is amusing to me. Also amusing? Julia and Jennifer didn’t pose together on the red carpet at all. That just shows you Julia’s Alpha-Dog tendencies, just my opinion. We’ll start with Jennifer Aniston, who wore this sort of deconstructed Armani suit which, yes, involves shorts. At first, I just saw the top half and I didn’t care for it, but the whole look is much better. The cut-off on the jacket/shorts is very flattering to her figure and her body looks great. I think her face looks less filler’d and Botoxed too. Now if we could just stop with the hair-in-the-face styling. As for Julia, she wore this shorts-suit from Rag and Bone. While Julia looks nice, I feel like this is millionth time she’s tries to make Business Shorts a thing. And I’m just not feeling it. I get that she has crazy-long legs and she wants to show them off. But why not just do a short cocktail dress? I don’t know, I just feel like this wasn’t her best choice out of all the available options. Additional photos… here’s Jack Whitehall. Olivia Wilde on ‘Vinyl’ fashion: ‘People in the ’70s apparently didn’t have hips’

The last time we talked about Olivia Wilde she was discussing the merkin (pubic wig) which she has to wear for nude scenes on her HBO show, Vinyl, set in the 1970s. I was surprised at how many of you had strong feelings about that issue, particularly Olivia’s embarrassment at having a hirsute nether region, even temporarily. I don’t think she was saying that hair down there is hideous, just that she prefers more grooming in that area. To each their own. Some people like their hair long, some like it short. Now Olivia is discussing the fashion on Vinyl, specifically the real vintage clothing they wear. She’s representing H&M’s conscious collection, so that’s part of the reason she’s talking about this issue as well. “I’ll walk around with the wardrobe assistant saying, ‘I want that one, I want that one.’ I really have been so inspired by all the wardrobe across the board,” Wilde told PeopleStyle at the H&M Conscious Exclusive 2016 Collection event in N.Y.C., adding that not all looks work on her: “I can’t fit into any of the pants because people in the ’70s apparently just didn’t have hips. I guess that’s all the hormones in our food, but I don’t understand it. You pick up the jeans and they’re straight — there’s no butt and there’s no hips. They’re for a straight body.” The actress added that there’s also a 2016 pants trend she has trouble pulling off: Boyfriend jeans. “I try to wear the trend, but it always looks terrible, because I have really short legs,” she shared. “Almost everything we wear on the show is real vintage. And that’s a lot of effort on the part of our designer and on the part of the team,” she shared. “We have a whole kind of workshop to take real vintage items and fix them — because when you buy vintage you sometimes have to do a little bit of tailoring and cleaning. We should just be buying things that already exist as oppose to trying to mass produce everything new. Plus, it’s fun to buy things that have a story so that you can say this is a vintage Halston, a piece that has been around.” Wilde has also been going to vintage shops since she was 12, so she’s now a pro at repairing old clothes. “Now I know what to look for and know what to do when I see something that’s messed up. You can buy it, take it to a seamstress and it’s not that expensive fix it, clean it,” she shared. “It’s much cooler to have something that has history than to just buy something new.” Her passion for recycling old clothes makes her the perfect person to partner with H&M on its latest Conscious collection, hitting stores Thursday. Wilde starred in the campaign last year, and this year she’s continuing to spread the brand’s message of eco-friendly fashion. “We think that we’re going to sacrifice style in order to be sustainable, and that’s not true as this collection proves,” Wilde said. “That’s what I love about what H&M’s done this year and last year. They are really good at showing that you can wear a piece that doesn’t necessarily scream sustainability, but just happens to be taking advantage of this new innovation that they’re investing in. I think they’re very smart about the whole process and pioneers within this movement, which I didn’t necessarily know before. I think I connected H&M with my idea of what fast fashion meant to the world. I didn’t realize how much work they were putting in to changing that.” [From People] While it’s true that people in the 70s were smaller than they are now, I think that saying that they didn’t have hips is like saying women in the 50s had pointy boobs. Straight legs were just the style. Plus when you’re talking about vintage fashion, the stuff that’s left is whatever people haven’t bought yet so of course it’s the outlier sizes. I haven’t watched this show yet but I have to say that I love the vintage fashion on The Americans especially. It’s set in the early 80s and their coat p0rn is amazing. I recently read a book by a costume designer for television called How to Get Dressed. The author, Alison Freer, says that fit is key to looking polished, not following trends. She emphasizes tailoring, which is exactly what Wilde is saying here about shopping second hand. You can really see the work that goes into the clothing on television and that book gave me a newfound appreciation for thrift shopping. How much money is Duchess Kate spending on clothes for her 6-day tour?

In this post, I’m using photos of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge from their last big overseas trip, the Australian and New Zealand tour in 2014. I’m doing that because we’re going to talk about clothes, more specifically the clothes Kate will be wearing for the India-Bhutan tour, which doesn’t start until April 10. We still don’t know which designers Kate will be using for the tour, but several outlets are running previews and I guess we should start to get excited about Kate-in-a-sari. Do you think that will even happen? I would love to see her in a sari, but I think it’s far more likely that she would wear a British Indian designer, something with Indian flavor but very much a formal gown. You never know though, maybe Kate will whip out a sari. The Telegraph did a big story on what Kate will wear, but there isn’t much new info here. She’ll take 12-15 outfits for six days, she’ll have “daytime dresses and evening gowns” and hopefully at least one pair of jeggings, I’m assuming. Kate’s team – including her secretary Rebecca Deacon – did a “rehearsal trip” to India to scout locations, take photos and prepare the color story of what Kate will be wearing. Still, a royal source insists: “She is in charge of it herself and takes an interest in paying tribute to the host country with nods to their culture and local style on at least a few of the engagements. The important factor on this tour is the heat, so that’s an issue that plays a big part in the choice of outfits.” She’s likely “commissioned” some special pieces as well as looking for some stuff online. She will be traveling with Natasha Archer – who acts as her stylist (very poorly, I might add) – and Amanda Cook Tucker, who is her hairstylist/wiglet tamer. No one has any idea how much Kate is spending on clothes for this tour, but I think we can assumed that she’s easily spending $40,000 or more. Meanwhile, the Daily Mail’s gossip girl (The Girl About Town) had this interesting piece of news: The Duchess of Cambridge is to cement her title as the Queen of Norfolk by hosting a £10,000-a-head ultra-exclusive party for 80 members of the county’s high society. The lavish gala will be held at Houghton Hall, Palladian stately home of the Marquess and Marchioness of Cholmondeley, and a short drive from Kate and Wills’ Anmer Hall. Kate’s name features on the invitation and the party is in aid of the East Anglia Children’s Hospice, the charity of which Kate became a patron in 2012. Tickets start at £6,000 per head and those who pay £10,000 are invited to stay at Houghton with the Marquess and Marchioness of Cholmondeley after the party on June 22, ten days after the Queen’s 90th birthday celebrations. The ball will include a champagne reception, a lecture by writer Anthony Horowitz, live jazz, a magician, and food by top chefs including Tom Kerridge. The event is another sign that Kate will host more charitable events after Her Majesty turns 90 and will be good practice for Kate the working Royal, with an impressive list of grandees attending the proceedings in Houghton’s marble-clad Stone Hall. [From The Daily Mail] Since I’m an Anglophile, I know that “Cholmondeley” is pronounced “chumly” for British reasons. While I always applaud the very idea of Kate going to work and raising money for charity, of course the only way they’re getting Kate out of the house is by getting her to attend a fancy party full of posh people. I understand that is the definition of modern charitable fundraising, so why is it like pulling teeth to get Kate to attend/co-host charity fundraisers?
