J.K. Rowling on reaction to new Hermione: ‘I thought that idiots were going to idiot’

Character portraits for the play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child were released over the weekend and they are all lovely; take a look on Pottermore. As we reported in December of last year, Olivier-Award winning actor, Noma Dumezweni, was cast as Hermione in this production. After the announcement, people with nothing better to do complained to the Twitterverse about her casting. The issue was not her credentials but the fact that she is not white and that somehow flies in the face of the characterization of Hermione. At the time, J.K. Rowling gave the following statement in support of the casting choice: Canon: brown eyes, frizzy hair and very clever. White skin was never specified. HPatCC takes place 19 years after the gang has graduated Hogwarts. Harry is married with three children and the youngest, Albus, is reluctant to carry on the family legacy. The story is a continuation from the books, not the movies so it really doesn’t matter who played the part in the movie, even if they did a wonderful job in that role. Now that the dust up on social media has died down, JK expressed her annoyance about the controversy and did so in classic JK fashion. JK Rowling has revealed her frustration at online reaction by “a bunch of racists” to news that the role of Hermione will be played by a black actress in the eagerly awaited new play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. The production, which has broken records by selling 175,000 tickets in 24 hours, is tipped to be the theatrical event of the year. But the Harry Potter creator criticised those who have suggested that Hogwarts’ studious heroine could not be played by the Olivier-award-winning actress Noma Dumezweni. “With my experience of social media, I thought that idiots were going to idiot,” she said in an interview with the Observer. “But what can you say? That’s the way the world is. Noma was chosen because she was the best actress for the job.” While the vast majority of people responded positively to the casting decision, Rowling said: “I had a bunch of racists telling me that because Hermione ‘turned white’ – that is, lost colour from her face after a shock – that she must be a white woman, which I have a great deal of difficulty with. But I decided not to get too agitated about it and simply state quite firmly that Hermione can be a black woman with my absolute blessing and enthusiasm.” Dumezweni was cast by the play’s director, John Tiffany – known for the productions Black Watch and the musical Once – who has collaborated with Rowling and the playwright Jack Thorne, writer of This Is England and The Last Panthers. Tiffany said he was surprised by the opinions expressed online, but had stopped reading the comments. “I am not as Twitter-familiar as Jo and Jack, so I hadn’t encountered its dark side, which is just awful. But what shocked me was the way people couldn’t visualise a non-white person as the hero of a story. It’s therefore brilliant that this has happened.” [From The Guardian] I always cast books in my head and producers never go with my picks when they are made into movies. Shockingly, I am able to get over it and see the film without bias. I remain at a loss over the criticism of Noma; I would be thrilled to see someone of her caliber perform. Elphaba in Wicked needed to be green, it was a huge point in the story but Hermione’s skin color has no affect on her. I think I’ll save my outrage for the fact that I will never get tickets to this show and not the fact that Hermione is not alabaster or Ron not-ginger enough. Keira Knightley’s directors take to Twitter to defend her talent, professionalism

As we discussed yesterday, director John Carney gave an interview to The Independent a few days ago and the interview has gotten a crazy amount of attention. Carney directed Keira Knightley in Begin Again, a film released a few years back. Carney claims – repeatedly, and with some blatantly sexist language – that Keira is a diva constantly surrounded by an entourage, that she made it difficult to get “real work done,” that she doesn’t have the requisite “honesty and self-analysis” to be a proper actor, and that she is a “supermodel” (which is apparently the worst pejorative ever). The whole interview made me feel sick to my stomach. He dragged Keira so hard, you would have thought she had hurt his family or something. Thankfully, it seemed like most people saw through John Carney’s sexist bulls—t. Keira still hasn’t said a word and I hope she doesn’t say anything about it, because why would she? But her friends in the industry are tweeting about Carney’s interview and defending her. Liam Hemsworth FINALLY Opens Up About Relationship With Miley Cyrus

Liam Hemsworth has been impressively silent when it comes to his relationship with Miley Cyrus. The two rekindled their relationship around the new year, but neither party has spoken publicly about it. Now, in an interview with GQ Australia, Liam opens up a little and confirms he and Miley are very much back on, confessing that she makes him happy. “I guess when I feel something, then I just feel it and I go for it,” Hemsworth said, speaking about their relationship. “I make my decisions about what’s going to make me happy, what I think is right and what I want to do — and I don’t worry too much outside of that,” he continued. While the Hunger Games actor does not specifically reveal their exact relationship status, he hinted that fans already knew. “People will figure it out, they already have,” he said. “They’re not dumb.” What the WHAT?! What does he mean we’ve figured it out? In the past few months, we’ve heard rumors of an engagement, a pregnancy, cheating by both parties, breakups and even a secret, unofficial beach wedding in which they exchanged palm fronds for rings. Is he saying it’s all true? You’re killing us, Liam. The most prevalent rumor as of now is that the two are engaged to be married and are preparing to wed sometime this year in Liam’s native Australia. We’ve also received reports that Miley is pregnant and planning a shotgun wedding, but we’re going to go out on a limb and say that’s probably false. But you never know, and Liam hasn’t denied it. The Daily Mail has a new interview with Real Housewives of New York’s Ramona Singer, 59. Her quotes reads like a drunken bragging session about how gorgeous she is. I don’t watch RHONY and my opinion of this woman is based on the handful of times I’ve paid attention to her, but she sounds just about as sheltered and clueless as most of the real housewives. They become sort-of interchangeable at times. Ramona, 59, had breast augmentation two years ago and she’ll tell you about it. The Daily Mail has a comparison photo of Singer in a bikini before and after her new boobs and she looked better “before” to me, but I’m smaller on top and I like it that way. I hear so many horror stories from my friends with big boobs (like Kaiser) about how it’s hard to exercise or find clothing that fits right. At least that’s what I tell myself because bigger boobs are not in my future. Singer has surely had a ton of Botox and fillers in her face, but she’s proud of the fact that she hasn’t had invasive plastic surgery, which sounds just like what her co-star Bethenny Frankel said recently, although Frankel was probably lying. Here’s what Ramona told the Daily Mail: says she looks better at 59 thanks to carefree new outlook, strict fitness routine, hair extensions and a boob job. ‘I’m feeling really good. A weight has been lifted off me and that’s reflected in my face and my spirit and my body,’ she tells DailyMail.com. The Bravo star said she had her breasts enhanced because she wanted to ‘feel sexier,’ but she has no intention of going under the knife again. ‘Why would I have anything planned? I look the best I’ve ever looked,’ she said. ‘I think I look great, I’m very happy.’ The star revealed that her plastic surgeon was reluctant to perform the boob job on her and tried to talk her out of it. ‘I’ve always had great breasts,’ she revealed. ‘My legs and my breasts have always been great features.’ ‘In fact my doctor, she thought I was nuts, she didn’t even want to touch my breasts. ‘She was like, ‘Are you kidding? You have gorgeous breasts and your breasts are better than most 25-year-olds. What are you doing?…’ ‘I did it for me… I wanted to feel sexier,’ she said. ‘I wanted to be able to look just as good with a brassiere as without one. ‘And before, because I am over 50, let’s face it gravity hits. It wasn’t hitting that badly, but I wanted to look perkier. I wanted to be perky the way I was in my 30s.’ ‘And it made me feel good,’ she added. The reality star said she saw no issue with getting plastic surgery over 50. ‘Most women have had their breasts done two or three times already,’ said Ramona. ‘There are girls getting their breasts done at 17,18,20 – it’s crazy. So for me to wait until after 50, so be it. Why not?’ Ramona denied having invasive work done on her face. ‘Most girls my age over 50 have had the complete facelift, the neck lift and I don’t really need that,’ she said. ‘I’m into working out and staying fit.’ [From The Daily Mail] No, most “girls” her age have not had a complete facelift or multiple boob jobs. Maybe most of the women she knows have. Maybe in their group of moneyed women and reality stars they’re so used to looking at frozen faces that they become normal, but they’re still noticeably different to the rest of us. I know maybe 3-5 people who have had work done to their faces, and maybe 10 people who have had Botox. It’s still rare in my part of the country. It’s kind of scary to think that there are places where teens are getting new boobs in high school and are stopping by strip malls to get their lips plumped but I know those places exist and it happens. When you put it in that context, it’s easy to say “Oh this boob job is no biggie, this Restylane and Botox is nothing, you should see what Sharon had done. Angelina Jolie almost played the lead role in the iconic ’90s movie ‘The Craft’

This ^^ is a photo of Angelina Jolie in 1996’s Foxfire, the story about five teenage misfits who gang together to take down the man who has harassed them. Foxfire was the film where Angelina met and fell in love with Jenny Shimizu, incidentally. It was also the film Angelina did instead of The Craft!! For ‘90s girls like me, The Craft is a pretty big deal. Personally speaking, Clueless was always a bigger deal for ME, but I did enjoy The Craft. The Craft is also a story of a gang of misfit girls banding together… but they banded together for witchcraft! The iconic ‘90s film starred Robin Tunney (in the lead role), Fairuza Balk, Neve Campbell and Rachel True. The film turns 20 years old this year, and to celebrate, HuffPo did interviews with original cast members, producers and the director, Andrew Fleming. Fleming said that Angelina was very close to being cast in the lead role, which went to Robin Tunney. That’s what’s shocking to me, that Jolie read for Sarah and not Nancy (played by Fairuza Balk). You may not be able to picture The Craft with a different group of teen witches, but that was almost the case when putting the coven together. During an interview with The Huffington Post to celebrate the cult classic’s 20th anniversary, casting director Pam Dixon and director Andrew Fleming revealed that the famous 1996 flick almost starred some now-huge A-listers, including Angelina Jolie, Alicia Silverstone and Scarlett Johansson. And they all went for the same part—Sarah, the lead role. “We did these tests and we tested a lot of girls, some of whom have become really well-known,” Dixon shared. “We actually had a hold on somebody that we had to let go because she got offered another film, and we didn’t know if the movie was really happening. That girl was Angelina Jolie. She did Foxfire instead.” Oh, whaaaaat? She continued, “Another person who came in was Scarlett Johansson, who was just 12 at the time. The other girl was Alicia Silverstone. This would have been ‘95. She had just shot Clueless, but it had not come out. Alicia also got something between the time that we read them and the time we were really going to make the movie, so we couldn’t pick her up either and she went to do something else. They were all really for Sarah.” The lead role obviously ended up going to Robin Tunney, who actually auditioned for a smaller part in the film. “Robin was originally cast in the part that Neve Campbell played, but we wanted her for the lead. We had to talk her into playing the lead, which was weird. But she did it. She wanted to play Bonnie, and we said, ‘No, we want you to be Sarah.’ It was like a reverse-Hollywood story where she wanted the smaller part.” [From E! News] I could see how Alicia Silverstone would be in contention for the middle-of-the-road Sarah role, and I could also see how Angelina would have been outright offered the lead or any role in the film. But Angelina would have been better as Nancy. Perhaps they already had Fairuza at the time and they just wanted Sarah to be darker, thus Angelina. Because remember how Angelina was back then? Anne Hathaway cried when a trainer made a comment about her ‘baby weight’

Anne Hathaway is currently promoting her role in Alice Through the Looking Glass, which is why she appeared on The Ellen Show on Tuesday. This was actually her first TV interview since giving birth two months ago, and honestly, I already see a difference in Anne. She’s really sleep-deprived, for one. And as I said yesterday, I think the sleep deprivation is making her kind of punch-drunk. Anyway, she told a story about going back to the gym after she gave birth to her son, Jonathan Rosebanks (who she calls Jonny). Is two months too early to go back to the gym? It’s different for every woman, and I’m sure Anne’s doctors gave her the nod. But still, she really did just give birth, so she had a particularly emotional reaction when some dude made a comment about her “baby weight.” Anne Hathaway gave birth only eight weeks ago, so she’s not totally ready to resume some of her normal routines. She did decide, however, that she would go back to the gym, but even that has been tough. “Being a Mom has changed me in a couple ways. I actually, not based on this moment, but other moments feel a lot more confident. Normally you walk into the gym and you see, I work out in West Hollywood, so you see like Thor’s trainer, you know the people who have too many muscles to be in The Avengers that’s who works out at my gym,” she explains, adding that she has returned to the gym only three times. “So I would normally walk in and feel so intimidated, but I walk in I’m like yeah I work out with 5 pound weights, but I pushed a baby out of my body I feel good right now. So I don’t care what I look like, I feel great. I’m on this [row] machine, whatever that does.” All of a sudden, someone started to stare at the Oscar-winning star, so at first she thought she was doing something incorrectly and became a little insecure. “I see this guy who does actually look like Thor’s trainer staring at me and I’m like, ‘Oh God. Am I doing something wrong?’” Hathaway recalls. “In the past I just would have slunk off my machine.” With her new mommy confidence, Hathaway explains that she asked the trainer if everything was OK, and they struck up a short conversation. But it didn’t end there. “He’s like, ‘So you been working out at this gym for a long time.’ And I’m like oh my God he’s hitting on me. Nice! New mom. I feel really good about myself and I’m like, ‘Oh, yeah I’ve been coming here for a little bit.’ He’s like, ‘Cool, I’m a trainer here and just wondering if you want some pointers.’ And I’m like, Oh no he’s not hitting on you he just wants a job.” Spoiler alert: He didn’t get the job because instead of giving her the proper response after she revealed she had recently given birth, he body shamed her. “If somebody says I had a baby 13 years ago you say you look great. That is what you do that is the etiquette,” she explains on the show. “So I say to this guy I had a baby seven weeks ago. And he goes, ‘Oh, trying to lose the baby weight!’” Hathaway explains that she kept her cool in the moment, but afterwards she walked away and cried! [From E! News] To be fair to the dude-face trainer, he didn’t assume that she had just had a baby, he waited until she said it. And he didn’t say, “Oh, that’s why you look that way.” But yeah, it was rude. Really rude. There’s such an epidemic of rude gym trainers, right? I’ve been going to the same gym for years and I have my routine and I know what I’m doing (for the most part) and I stay in my particular comfort zone. But inevitably, a new trainer will show up and try to tell me what I should be doing in a really patronizing way. Like, “Oh, do you understand how the treadmill works?” Yes, trust me, I understand. Now go away. As for Anne’s situation, the guy just wanted work and he probably thought he was being helpful. And she should have told him to just go away. Blake Shelton claims Gwen Stefani ‘saved my life’: sweet or melodramatic?

Well, I hoped for a “Gwake Break,” but it doesn’t seem to be happening anytime soon, as the couple have continued to ride the publicity train for their new duet. Blake taped an interview for CMT’s Hot 20 Countdown. He told the show’s host, Katie Cook, that the staggering number of views on his debut performance of “Go Ahead and Break My Heart” with Gwen Stefani on The View is due to the “media craze around us being together.” I think a lot of it had more to do with people’s curiosity to hear the California-born ska/rocker sing with the country crooner than anything else. Blake also had this to say about his new relationship: “It’s not something anybody could’ve seen coming besides God I guess because it doesn’t look like it would make sense. All I can tell you is that it does. It just makes the most perfect sense for us and where we’re at in our lives. I tell people all the time, ‘Gwen saved my life last year.’ She did. I think she’d tell you something similar about me.” “This thing just happened because of some things we were going through. Even coming into [her] second season [working on] The Voice, I didn’t even really know her that well. All of a sudden this thing just happened because of some things we were going through and it saved my life, period.” [From CMT/E!] Wow. Chart-topping country hits, a successful TV show, adoring fans, but it’s Gwen who “saved his life?” That’s kind of a bold statement. I guess Blake is starting to run out of talking points – which he should by now. Blake continued to talk about his relationship on Thursday’s TODAY, saying out loud what a lot of people were thinking when he got together with Gwen. It’s a little weird. We could not be, on paper, any more different. I mean, I’m a country singer and she’s a ska, rock, pop, whatever it is…and it’s just an odd idea. But man, it’s a lot of fun. I’ve gotta be honest about that. [From TODAY/US] As he mentioned backstage after the song’s debut, Blake again told CMT (and TODAY…sheesh) that he wrote the song mainly to woo Gwen and was relieved that she liked it so much. Gwen admitted on an appearance on Chelsea Handler’s talk show on Wednesday that her biggest fear about the tune was, as she put it, “Whoa what if I don’t like it, huge turn off!” Fortunately for Gwake, that wasn’t the case.
