Claire Danes’ Met gown was ‘custom fiber optic organza with battery packs’

My favorite gown at the Met Gala, and the one that I thought best captured the theme, was Claire Danes’ Cinderella style Zac Posen, an impressive gown in its own right which went to the next level by glowing and sparkleingwith the lights off. Many of you said that the theme Manus x Machina (hand and machine) was more than just technology meets design, that it was meant to incorporate both traditional hand design methods, like the intricate feathering on Zoe Saldana’s Dolce & Gabbana, and more modern technology, like the perfectly circular machine-cut grommets on Kate Mara’s dress. I think that’s accurate now that I’ve read through the whole theme description. Although I find that theme too all-encompassing I can now appreciate how more traditional dresses did fit the theme. Some of them still seemed phoned in to me, and I would have liked to see more designs with tech features built in, but I see your point. Entertainment Weekly has an interview with Posen, who described the technology behind the dress that had everyone talking. It was made with a fibric optic material which transmitted light and had 30 battery packs built in to run it. Next year, I want to see recycled gowns (like Emma Watson’s) with solar-paneled lights. I kid but that would be fun. Plus imagine owning clothes that glow without batteries. As long as it didn’t attract bugs outside I would want that. Here’s more, from EW: Posen set out to create a gown that highlighted “the place where technology and fantasy meet.” Made of custom fiber optic woven organza with 30 mini battery packs sewn into a thin organza lining, the result was a haute couture design that reflects his experimental approach to fashion. “We custom developed the fabrication, because I wanted to create something that had a transparency to it, but an illumination to it.” And though the major glam factor came from the light bright factor, even the smallest details — like its raw-edged hem — were considered ahead of the gown’s red carpet debut. “I think fashion has become something called fashiontainment,” reflects Posen. “And it’s our job as dreamers and creators to push that.” That said, the pale blue, princess-style dress required 600 hours of work from Posen and his six-person team, and paid off when social media declared the dress a Cinderella moment. “It’s always great when something resonates and creates a visceral reaction,” says Posen, who has incorporated tech-inspired designs in previous collections and worked with Google’s Made with Code program. [From Entertainment Weekly] Here’s the video again: Magic moments!! Zacposen #metgala #clairedanes A video posted by @zacposen on May 2, 2016 at 7:11pm PDT Some of you didn’t like this gown and I know that Lainey called it “gimmicky.” I usually agree with her, but I thought this was a beautiful fantasy, like something you would see on film created with CGI only achieved in real life. Posen designed with light, and this gown was incredible. EW also reports that Claire had to return the dress by midnight and that she changed for the after party. It’s not specified in the story, but if this gown goes on display at the MET I’m going to visit it. I’m getting goosebumps imagining seeing it lit up. Plus it’s been a while since I’ve been to New York. Embed from Getty Images Embed from Getty Images photos credit: WENN, FameFlynet and Getty

Ingrid Seward: Duchess Kate ‘is absolutely terrified of not doing it right’

Ingrid Seward is a prominent editor, writer and royal biographer in the UK. She’s the editor for Majesty Magazine, but she writes for other publications and provides quotes and explanatory interviews for American publications. The last time we mentioned Seward, it was last month. She wrote a SCATHING piece for the Daily Mail following several high-profile misfires and PR bungles from the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. Seward attacked them openly, calling them “a rich, increasingly spoiled couple growing surprisingly distant.” She attacked their privilege, their tone-deaf PR strategies, their entitlement. It was pretty amazing. But now Will and Kate’s fifth anniversary is coming up (tomorrow) and Seward has been called in to offer analysis of how Kate has fared in her first five years within The Firm. How Kate has done in five years: “I think she’s integrated extremely well. It’s not easy – not a lot of guidance – but of course she has the best teacher in William. I think that’s made a massive difference – having his hand on her hand. She hasn’t made any mistakes which is extraordinary when you think of how difficult it is for her. I suppose the only mistake she’s made is that she’s probably seen not always as particularly interesting but I think she’s absolutely terrified of not doing it right. I think she feels a great responsibility on her slender shoulders to do the right thing and be seen to be doing the right thing.” Whether Kate needs to step up & have a larger voice: “She’s got so long to be there that I don’t think there’s any need for her to be passing her own opinions yet because she’s got years to do it. If she wanted to do, she would, but she obviously doesn’t want to.” Will & Kate are BFFs: “I think she’s probably his best friend and vice versa. You get pretty isolated up there in that ivory tower of royalty.” The “workshy” and “dolittle” criticisms: “The timing was right for a couple of blips to happen. They were so much on top of the pedestal there was only one way and that was down.” [From The Daily Mirror] Well, somebody is back in the good graces of Poor Jason. Even though other outlets are running with the “Kate is terrified” quote like it’s some kind of shade, that quote actually reads as a compliment. As in, Seward thinks Kate has barely made any mistakes in the past five years. Which… really? And here’s the thing: last month, I thought the workshy/dolittle thing was going to blow over too. But the British-media reaction to Will and Kate’s India-Bhutan tour made it clear that the gloves are off with the Cambridges and that (to mix metaphors) a page has been turned. So it will be interesting to see if Poor Jason can work his magic and create some positive headlines around this anniversary… which I assume Will and Kate will be spending “privately.” Probably with Carole. Last thing… Kate added something to her schedule for next week. She’ll be unveiling The Magic Garden at Hampton Court Palace next Wednesday. Go here to read more. Photos courtesy of PCN, WENN.

Star: LeAnn Rimes’ friends think Eddie Cibrian will leave when she’s broke

For many, many years now, the tabloids have been obsessed with the idea that LeAnn Rimes is running out of money, or that she’s bad with money, or that she spends too much money supporting her perpetually underemployed husband, Eddie Cibrian. I honestly believe a lot of those stories. While LeAnn was at one time pretty well off, she doesn’t have a lot of income coming in, and she has likely spent a good chunk of her savings since marrying Eddie. But still, we wait for the money to really dry up, and it hasn’t… yet. Which is my way of saying that this Star story could have been published at any point in the past six years: Turns out you can’t live a jet-set lifestyle on zero dollars a year – just ask LeAnn Rimes, who’s hoping a comeback tour will get her finances back in the black. And if it doesn’t, insiders believe it won’t just break the bank, but also her marriage to actor Eddie Cibrian! “LeAnn knows she’s neglected her career for too long,” admits a friend. “At this point she’s known more for her affair with Eddie than for being a singer.” LeAnn’s last album, 2013’s Spitfire, was a flop, and Eddie’s last major job was a three-episode stint on Baby Daddy. “They’ve coasted off LeAnn’s savings since they got together five years ago, but they live large with a huge mansion and lots of trips,” adds the insider. “Plus, she helps support his two sons.” Now LeAnn is ready to hit the road for a big concert tour… just with only two small shows scheduled this year, friends wonder if her dire financial straits will shatter her marriage to the 42-year-old Cibrian, who has grown accustomed to the A-list lifestyle, fueled by his wife’s nest egg. “Eddie married a rich girl on purpose,” says the pal. “So what happens when that’s no longer the case?” [From Star Magazine, print edition] The problem isn’t just that LeAnn is more known for the affair, it’s that she’s known for being a crazy Single White Female and a Twitter-stalker and all of that. And that means no one is really interested in hearing her sing. It’s a weird, LeAnn-specific conundrum, really. There are plenty of C-listers able to find revenue streams through social media, club appearances, random promotional work and guest appearances. But I get the feeling that A) LeAnn thinks a lot of that stuff is beneath her and B) no one is offering those deals to LeAnn anyway. What makes this story extra-funny is that Eddie’s rep went to Gossip Cop to deny it! Did you know Eddie still has a rep? He hasn’t worked in a year, and even then (as Star points out), it was just a minor guest spot on basic-cable. How does he still afford to have a publicist, hm? Well, Eddie DOES have a rep and the rep says: “Their marriage is fine… their finances are fine.” CASE CLOSED! Also, LeAnn posted this on her Instagram. I have no words. I was 14, he was 23. We don't remember meeting. He found this in the garage while going through boxes. 14 years later who knew we'd meet again. Crazy, all the life that happened between those two encounters, the lessons that needed to be learned. Fate? Chance? Serendipity? Who knows ? All we do know is, here we are together and tomorrow we are celebrating 5 years of being married and we wouldn't want to be anywhere else. #crazylove #lovers #friends #partners #hubby #anniversary #5years #throwback #throwbackthursday #tbt ❤️ A photo posted by LeAnn Rimes Cibrian (@leannrimes) on Apr 21, 2016 at 8:39am PDT Photos courtesy of WENN, Fame/Flynet, Instagram.

Queen Elizabeth releases three Annie Leibovitz portraits for her 90th b-day

Today is Queen Elizabeth’s 90th birthday, so course Buckingham Palace released more never-before-seen new portraits of Her Majesty. Annie Leibovitz was invited to Windsor Castle to take a series of portraits last month. One involves the Queen with the youngest members of the royal family: her two grandchildren (Louise and James) from Prince Edward and Sophie, plus her great-grandchildren, including Princess Charlotte (on her lap) and Prince George, who looks mischievous as hell. The other children are: Peter Phillips daughters, 5-year-old Savannah and 4-year-old Isla, plus Zara Phillips’ daughter Mia Tindall (the one holding the Queen’s purse!). Zara and Peter’s daughters look SO much alike. My favorite photo? This absolutely amazing and beautiful portrait of the Queen with her only daughter, the Princess Royal (Princess Anne). The way Anne has her arm around the back of the couch and the casual intimacy of this mother-daughter photo is so striking and lovely. Anne is the best! And of course, Annie Leibovitz couldn’t come to Windsor Castle and not take a shot of the Queen and her dogs! The Queen hasn’t gotten any more puppies in years, so these dogs are the last dogs she’ll ever have: Willow, Vulcan, Candy and Holly. I love it that the Queen has a dog named Candy. And Vulcan. I’m also including some photos of the Queen at an event yesterday in Windsor. E! News is running a story about the Queen’s impeccable style throughout the years – go here to read. Personally, I love it when she wears hot pink and diamonds. The Queen has an inner showgirl! Photos courtesy of WENN, Annie Leibovitz/Buckingham Palace.

Who had the best dress & jewels at the Tiffany Blue Book Ball in NYC?

Here are some photos from Friday night’s Tiffany Blue Book Ball in NYC. Four major actresses/celebrities came out for the event, and considering they were all DRIPPING in fabulous jewels, I totally believe that Tiffany’s paid them all to be there, looking fabulous and wearing certain high-end pieces. Those ladies? Jessica Biel, Diane Kruger, Reese Witherspoon and Naomi Watts. I’m trying to include some close-ups of the jewels too. First up, here’s Jessica Biel in The Row. I’m starting with the worst, just FYI. While Mary-Kate and Ashley’s The Row is a well-respected line, I always struggle to understand why anyone thinks this looks good? This dress looks so cheap and basic. Biel doesn’t help the underwhelming dress either, she was aiming for less-is-more and she just looked like she was in desperate need of lipstick and a hairstylist. Diane Kruger knows how to stand out. This Kaufmanfranco look would have looked ridiculous on another woman, but Diane is killing it. Also, Diane got the BEST necklace. Diamonds, emeralds, aquamarines, sapphires, possibly some tourmalines? It’s really gorgeous. The silhouette on Reese Witherspoon’s J. Mendel dress is incredibly flattering, but I still don’t really care for the look as a whole. I think the flower applique/beading sort of morphs into something moldy-looking. And I wish Reese had done something else with her hair. Still, the necklace she got to wear? Perfection. CB loves Naomi Watts while I’m sort of meh on Watts and her style. She never looks hideous, but sometimes I do think Watts is stuck in a style rut. This Prada is a good example – I know why Naomi picked it, it’s because she thinks ice-blue looks good with her coloring, and because she likes these frothy, light dresses. But no one on her styling team realized that the ice blue was very similar to the “Tiffany Blue” of the background, which means Naomi looks like she’s blending into the wall. That’s a rookie mistake, IMO. Photos courtesy of WENN.

Sarah Palin: ‘Bill Nye is as much as scientist as I am… he’s not a scientist’

Sarah Palin attended a Washington, DC premiere for the film (“film”) Climate Hustle this week. Climate Hustle, if you do not know, is a right-wing propaganda “documentary” about how climate change isn’t real and it’s all just a massive conspiracy by Hollywood liberals and fake scientists (and the filmmakers trot out a few fake scientists of their own). Over the past few years, Bill Nye has become one of the regular commentators on how climate change is hella real, and he often makes amazingly efficient arguments to prove his point. Clips of Nye’s interviews appear in Climate Hustle, but as you imagine, the propagandists “disprove” whatever he’s saying. Still, Bill Nye’s scientific qualifications are no match for a cut-and-run ex-governor and malfunctioning fembot, you betcha. At the premiere, Palin told the crowd: “Bill Nye is as much as scientist as I am. He’s a kids’ show actor; he’s not a scientist,” Palin pointed out, before accusing Nye of using his position of authority to harm children by teaching them that climate change is real and man-made. Palin insisted that parents not allow their children to be indoctrinated by fact-based scientific research, urging them to “ask those questions and not just believe what Bill Nye the Science Guy is trying to tell” them. [From Salon] Here are some facts… Bill Nye graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science in mechanical engineering from Cornell in 1977. He worked at Boeing where he developed a hydraulic pressure resonance suppressor. He helped develop the sundial for the Mars Rover expedition. He has held the position of vice president and executive director of The Planetary Society. He holds several patents. I got all of this information from browsing his Wiki page for a few minutes. He IS a scientist and an engineer. And he makes science, math, astronomy and engineering relatable and exciting to kids. And he advocates for good science, for science free of political agenda. All of that can coexist in one person. Just like dangerous stupidity and a basic lack of decency can coexist in Sarah Palin. Photos courtesy of WENN.

Chris Evans isn’t ruling out running for political office: ‘I would never say never’

Captain America fans be damned, I’ve never really been a huge Chris Evans stan. I don’t have a problem with him, it’s just that he sometimes (SOMETIMES) seems like a neurotic whiner. But he’s not like that in his interview with the new issue of Esquire Middle East. He comes across well and almost sort-of Captain America-like. Before now, I had no idea that his uncle is currently serving in the House of Representatives. His uncle is Rep. Mike Capuano. Do they call him “Cap” too?! Anyway, Chris talks about politics and more. Some highlights: Whether he would run for political office: “I would never say never. I’ve always thought it would be nice one day to think about some sort of political pursuit. I’m so proud of my uncle and of anyone who dedicates themselves to helping the progression of society in exacting change for the betterment of mankind. Ultimately, there’s very few things that I consider to be noble and challenging. I know that Washington is a tough place. I have my opinions and maybe later on in life I might try and actually get up on a soap box.” Directing his first movie, Before We Go: “I’d wanted to direct for a long time. It’s just hard to find someone who’s willing to let you direct. I have no training. I’ve never been to any sort of school, so it’s a gamble. It was a situation where we found a script that felt manageable. This was a simple story; it’s two people. It just felt very contained and, not to sound awful, but I aimed a little low, just because I wanted to get my feet wet. I think there’s no shame in that. I didn’t want to bite off more than I could chew the first time out.” What happened as a director: “There were a lot of things I thought I was prepared for that never became a problem, and things I didn’t think would be an issue that ended up being one. So it was very eye opening. But I loved the experience and I want to do it again. I’m trying to aim a little higher in terms of the story and the scope. I feel a little more comfortable behind the camera, and it’s now just about finding the right script. Because the really great scripts are snatched up by the really great directors. So it’s about digging and trying to find the diamond in the rough.” He’ll take more of a break from acting when he has kids: “I would never stop acting completely, because I do love it, but if I was to get married and have kids, I could see myself wanting to be less of a famous actor. The fame thing is the tricky part, especially when you have children, and there is a nice element to the investment in directing. Even the amount of time and passion required for pre- and post-production; you’re with a project intimately for a year. As an actor you’ve got a few months and then you completely forget about it. So I like that connection, and I like that you can be a little more in the shadows but still be part of a profession that you’re in love with.” On ambition: “My big ambition is to not have a big ambition. I know it’s kind of strange but mu goal in life is to practice trying to be present on a daily basis. I think, as people, our consciousness is spread out. We analyze the past, we worry about the future, and it’s all fueled by fear and pain and all these negative things. Even when its good it’s going to be not good in a minute. Then you’re chasing it again. It’s all rooted in time and I think my big ambition is to really practice the ability to quiet my brain a little and just learn how to enjoy the moment.” [From E! News] I didn’t see Before We Go, but I remember that the reviews weren’t bad or anything. He didn’t embarrass himself and he’ll probably be given another opportunity to direct, because Hollywood loves rewarding white guys. I’m just saying… if a black, Asian or Hispanic actor had made the jump to directing and made so little impact with their first film, would they be given another opportunity? As for what he says about possibly running for political office… I actually like that idea. He doesn’t carry around the kind of personal baggage that many “political” actors have – as in, I know less about Chris’s personal life than George Clooney, Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, etc. And I think it’s cute that he’s already planning ahead for when he’s married and has kids. PS… Chris debuted this new clip from Captain America: Civil War at the MTV Movie Awards.
