Prince Harry covers People Mag: ‘I know I’ve got a lot of my mother in me’

While I always enjoy it when other media outlets join the #HonksForHarry revolution, I don’t think People Magazine did Harry’s hot/dirty ginger-snap sexiness justice with this cover. It’s too much of a close-up! Of course, maybe Harry didn’t want to look like a roguish ginger snap. After all, he’s talking to People about his mother and the Invictus Games. It’s serious! Do not think about dirty ginger snaps while reading this. Some highlights from what appears to be a far-ranging and substantive interview: His mother’s influence: “All I want to do is make my mother incredibly proud. That’s all I’ve ever wanted to do. When she died, there was a gaping hole, not just for us but also for a huge amount of people across the world. If I can try and fill a very small part of that, then job done. I will have to, in a good way, spend the rest of my life trying to fill that void as much as possible. And so will William.” But he’s not his mother: “I enjoy what I do. But I don’t do things because I feel as though my mother would want me to do them. I know I’ve got a lot of my mother in me. I am doing a lot of things that she would probably do.” Creating the Invictus Games: “You turn up and you think you’re invincible in a super-duper aircraft, but you’re helpless. Then I come back and I say, ‘How can I use my name and that spotlight to the best effect?’ ” Creating the Games, he notes, was “almost like a cure for that pain I had back then.” American kids never believe he’s a prince: “Every time I get to meet kids and they have been told a real-life prince is coming, the disappointment on their faces when they see me without a crown or a cape…I’m worried because the American kids, especially next to Disney World, are going to be thinking, ‘You ain’t no prince, you ain’t dressed like a prince, you’re having a laugh!’ So I am going to pack a crown and a cape this time and some funny pointy-toed shoes. I’m going to sign the crown out!” Doing the second Invictus Games in America: “It’s like trying to drop a second album. The second one is always harder! This is what America feels like for a lot of us who planned London. This is the big one.” [From People Magazine] Sweet ginger prince. I find it interesting that he acknowledges that “I know I’ve got a lot of my mother in me.” It’s true. Journalists talk about it all the time. Harry-fans talk about it all the time. People who knew Diana talk about it all the time. He’s the one – not William – who is most like his mother. And I will never stop being fascinated with how differently the brothers access their memories of Diana. Harry speaks about Diana when he’s working, when he’s helping people, when he’s reaching out in empathy. William uses memories of his mother as a cautionary tale, and as cudgel against the press and critics. People also asked Harry if he wants to be settled down with kids and he said yes, he does want that but there’s “no rush.” Sigh… Also: Harry met Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau earlier this week as Harry did advance work for the Invictus Games. Trudeau really looks like a fairy-tale prince to me. Jay-Z didn’t attend the Met Gala because there was ‘no big reason for him to go’

Yesterday I noted how weird it felt to see Beyonce flying solo at the Met Gala. She seemed oddly vulnerable walking the carpet alone. While her sister was there, they didn’t walk the carpet together and they only spent time together inside the event. On the carpet, Beyonce seemed almost cautious, and like she was making a statement by going it alone. Page Six made a big deal about how Beyonce wasn’t wearing her wedding ring too. Sources claim Bey decided not to wear her ring because she didn’t think it “meshed well” with her Becky-skin Givenchy gown. So why did Jay-Z skip this year’s Met Gala? After the elevator drama post-Met Gala in 2014, Jay and Bey made a point of going to the 2015 Met Gala together as a show of solidarity. But post-Lemonade, Jay couldn’t be bothered? Beyoncé completely nailed her 2016 Met Gala look. There was just one thing missing when she hit the red carpet on Monday, May 2, in New York — her husband, Jay Z. Although fashion’s biggest night comes on the heels of Bey’s much talked-about visual album, Lemonade, sources tell Us Weekly that the rapper’s absence is no biggie — he’s simply just been there, done that. “He’s done it before,” the insider explains to Us. “There’s just no big reason for him to go.” [From Us Weekly] Suspicious? Yeah. Anyway, as I said, Bey and Solange spent a lot of time together inside the event. Solange didn’t bring her husband to the gala, but Alan Ferguson did come out for the post-gala parties. Beyoncé attended the Met Gala and after parties sans husband Jay Z. The singer first posed at Gilded Lily for the Balmain bash, where she hung out with the fashion house’s creative director, Olivier Rousteing, and her little sister Solange, who arrived with her husband, Alan Ferguson. “I don’t know where Jay was and I definitely thought it was interesting he didn’t come,” said one partygoer. “It definitely fuels speculation about the relationship, but I think that’s probably the point. People at the Met were talking about it.” But the chatter didn’t bother Beyoncé one bit. She celebrated with Champagne and “was in high spirits hanging out on the banquette with Olivier. She seemed to be in a very good mood,” a different source said. Bey later headed over to Up & Down, where DJ Jus Ske played Beyoncé’s song “Formation” as she arrived with Solange. [From Page Six] I get the feeling that the message – if there is a message – is that Jay-Z is still on notice to a certain extent. Like, Lemonade was about how he cheated, how Beyonce was mad and wanted to destroy everything, but she forgave him and worked through the drama. But he’s still on notice. And hey, maybe he truly didn’t want to go to the gala this year. Suspicious. PS… I absolutely love her party-pants!! Photos courtesy of Fame/Flynet, WENN.

US: Kelly Ripa may quit Live if she doesn’t get one of her friends to co-host

I saw Live with Michael and Kelly yesterday and while I haven’t watched this show enough to have a frame of reference it looked like things were back to normal. They came out holding hands, they were joking around about eyelash extensions and butt padding and they seemed to have a great rapport. At times Kelly looked uncomfortable but you had to be looking for it. If it wasn’t for all the stories you wouldn’t know that they were having issues and that Michael is leaving in just two weeks. They never brought it up. He’s leaving early though, whether that was due to Kelly throwing a fit or just an executive decision it’s hard to tell. Kelly’s issue seems to be more with the ABC executives who kept her out of the loop than with Michael, who was just following orders not to tell her. Kelly is said to still be playing hardball at ABC after staying away for five days. Us is reporting that she’s threatened to quit if she doesn’t get one of her friends, either Anderson Cooper or Andy Cohen, to cohost. A source exclusively reveals in the new issue of Us Weekly that Kelly Ripa “is talking about leaving” Live with Kelly and Michael after Michael Strahan announced his exit from the show for a permanent gig at Good Morning America. (Strahan was originally supposed to make the move in September, but the show announced this week that his last day on air will be May 13.) Although Ripa, 45, returned to the show after a four-episode hiatus Tuesday, April 26, the source says she still feels “blindsided” that producers and Strahan, 44, broke the news to her just moments before the April 19 public announcement: “She considers it a sign of disrespect.” Now, the 15-year Live vet will wait to see who producers seat beside her to help weigh her options for the future. They’re considering actor Jerry O’Connell, says the source, but Ripa “hopes Anderson Cooper or Andy Cohen gets the job.” Unfortunately, it’s not likely that one of Ripa’s pals will come aboard, due to their prior commitments (the CNN journalist is covering the election and the Watch What Happens Live host is under contract with Bravo), so the show may not go on for Ripa. Says the source, “Unless one of them can come on, she doesn’t really want to do it.” [From US Magazine] This is likely a negotiation tactic to make sure that Kelly has a say this time, because if she really means this it’s short-sighted for a couple of reason. One, just because she’s good friends with someone (she has known both Cooper and Cohen for years) does not mean they’re the best choice for a co-host. Working with a friend can bring up all sorts of problems you wouldn’t have with someone you only know in a professional capacity. And two, both of those guys are super busy with their own shows as US points out. This sounds like Kelly is just trying to get her way, but keep in mind that it could also be a planted story meant to make her look like a diva. We know the network is not above that, think of how TMZ got the news that Kelly’s finances are overextended. People reports that both Cooper and Cohen will come on as guest hosts following Strahan’s exit and that additional hosts will include Josh Groban and Seth Meyers. It’s unknown when a permanent host will be chosen and a source tells People “They’re prepared to keep cycling people through even if its not resolved by the fall.” E! Online has a think piece about this while debacle. (I really like their editorials lately, they seem to be going in a new direction.) They have quotes from a media expert who says that the way this has played out so far “it looks like Kelly won” against the network. Their source also gives ABC credit for letting Kelly say her piece at the beginning of her return show and not trying to censor or pre-tape her remarks. Also, Bellamy Young of “Scandal” was a guest on Tuesday’s show and she said that although there was tension backstage it all felt completely professional during her interview. Kathy Lee Gifford, who was replaced by Kelly on Live 15 years ago after she put in 15 years with Regis, has some advice for Kelly which sounds like delicious shade. She said “Be totally professional. I would keep anything that is going on between you private. It’s nobody’s business but yours. But always, always be professional at your job. That’s what you’re hired to do.” You know Kathy does not consider it professional to take a bunch of days off work and then insist that a friend be hired to work with you. Ingrid Seward: Duchess Kate ‘is absolutely terrified of not doing it right’

Ingrid Seward is a prominent editor, writer and royal biographer in the UK. She’s the editor for Majesty Magazine, but she writes for other publications and provides quotes and explanatory interviews for American publications. The last time we mentioned Seward, it was last month. She wrote a SCATHING piece for the Daily Mail following several high-profile misfires and PR bungles from the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. Seward attacked them openly, calling them “a rich, increasingly spoiled couple growing surprisingly distant.” She attacked their privilege, their tone-deaf PR strategies, their entitlement. It was pretty amazing. But now Will and Kate’s fifth anniversary is coming up (tomorrow) and Seward has been called in to offer analysis of how Kate has fared in her first five years within The Firm. How Kate has done in five years: “I think she’s integrated extremely well. It’s not easy – not a lot of guidance – but of course she has the best teacher in William. I think that’s made a massive difference – having his hand on her hand. She hasn’t made any mistakes which is extraordinary when you think of how difficult it is for her. I suppose the only mistake she’s made is that she’s probably seen not always as particularly interesting but I think she’s absolutely terrified of not doing it right. I think she feels a great responsibility on her slender shoulders to do the right thing and be seen to be doing the right thing.” Whether Kate needs to step up & have a larger voice: “She’s got so long to be there that I don’t think there’s any need for her to be passing her own opinions yet because she’s got years to do it. If she wanted to do, she would, but she obviously doesn’t want to.” Will & Kate are BFFs: “I think she’s probably his best friend and vice versa. You get pretty isolated up there in that ivory tower of royalty.” The “workshy” and “dolittle” criticisms: “The timing was right for a couple of blips to happen. They were so much on top of the pedestal there was only one way and that was down.” [From The Daily Mirror] Well, somebody is back in the good graces of Poor Jason. Even though other outlets are running with the “Kate is terrified” quote like it’s some kind of shade, that quote actually reads as a compliment. As in, Seward thinks Kate has barely made any mistakes in the past five years. Which… really? And here’s the thing: last month, I thought the workshy/dolittle thing was going to blow over too. But the British-media reaction to Will and Kate’s India-Bhutan tour made it clear that the gloves are off with the Cambridges and that (to mix metaphors) a page has been turned. So it will be interesting to see if Poor Jason can work his magic and create some positive headlines around this anniversary… which I assume Will and Kate will be spending “privately.” Probably with Carole. Last thing… Kate added something to her schedule for next week. She’ll be unveiling The Magic Garden at Hampton Court Palace next Wednesday. Go here to read more. Photos courtesy of PCN, WENN.

Jennifer Aniston: Gloria Steinem ‘taught me about feminism, it’s just about equality’

Jennifer Aniston has never said anything stupid about feminism. Since questions about feminism have been popular with entertainment journalists for the past few years, Aniston has been asked about her feminism several times, and she always maintains that yes, she is a feminist and no, she has no problem identifying that way. There’s no word-game about “humanism.” There’s no “but I like boys, thus I can’t be a feminist!” Well, as part of her People Magazine “Most Beautiful” cover, Aniston answered a lot of questions about different things, including feminism. And she cites Gloria Steinem as the person who taught her about feminism. She also talks about skinny jeans! Jennifer’s biggest beauty icon is Gloria Steinem. “I’ve always thought Gloria is quite stunning for many, many reasons besides her exterior. She’s taught me about feminism. There was a time when I was like, ‘I’m not quite sure I understand what this is?’ And she’s like, ‘It’s very simple: it’s just about equality. That’s all it is.’ She’s just taught me – have you seen her HBO documentary? I’ve seen it like eight times. She’s just a very beautiful, strong woman.” What Justin Theroux likes to see her wear: “Well, let me tell you. I think I’m pretty much the same but he really enjoys me in a skinny jean, which I loathe. But I think I have more skinny jeans these days than normal.” How she influenced Justin’s wardrobe: “Color! Not just black. It’s quite adorable.” What she’s learned about love: “Oh it comes in all shapes and sizes. It’s something to be taken care of and cherished. And paid attention to. It’s a blessing.” [From People Magazine] First, the skinny jeans… I’m right there with her. This is the most I’ve ever agreed with Jennifer Aniston. I LOATHE skinny jeans. And she’s right to dislike them too: she looks much cuter in a straight-leg or even a boot-cut jean. But of course Justin likes the skinny jeans – he even loves to wear his own skinny jeans. As for the feminism stuff… I think Jennifer could do much better than Gloria Steinem when it comes to feminist role models, but this is fine. She and Steinem are friends in real life, and I appreciate how straight-forward Aniston is being with the feminism questions. Photos courtesy of People Magazine, WENN.

Prince William’s ‘Marie Antoinette-style utterances’ distance him from the public

It’s a big day for the Cambridges! Prince William and Duchess Kate will be hosting the Obamas at Kensington Palace this evening. Prince Harry will be there to save the dinner, because let’s be honest: the Obamas love Harry. This dinner was added to the Cambridges’ schedule shortly after Will and Kate returned from their “whirlwind” and poorly-received India-Bhutan tour, likely in the hopes of making Will and Kate look “busy” and “not workshy.” Because those headlines still exist, especially following William’s prickly interview with the BBC this week. The Daily Mail reported that William’s office specifically left the door open for journalist Nicholas Witchell to ask the “workshy” questions. A source said: “After recent criticism, William’s team took a calculated decision to promote his image. That’s why the ducking royal duties question was allowed. Before, it would have been off limits.” The problem, perhaps, is that if you’re going to open yourself up to that line of questioning, you better have better answers than “pity poor me, I want to spend time with my family!” One of the Guardian’s columnists was openly mocking William, calling him “Darth Workshy” and mocking his “three-hours a week” gig as a pilot. The Daily Mail’s Jan Moir also picked apart William’s interview in a piece called “Wills must work much harder to win our love.” Some highlights: William needed to check his privilege: “For, surely, life is much harder for those with no future? With uncertain prospects, zero-hour contacts, minimum wage jobs and unable to afford the security of a home of their own. There are millions of people who can only dream of having a role in life they could ‘develop into’. Any role at all would do.” William’s deflection about being a new father: “What loving, young father, in the whole of this country, would not love the opportunity to spend more time with their children? Commuting dads who spend hours each day on trains; dads doing double shifts; dads who never have the opportunity to put their children to bed or cook their breakfast pancakes; dads who have to make do with precious hours of family time snatched together at weekends. Giving endless quality time to the kids is a luxury beyond the means of most parents, who must work to support their children and family life. William might mean well, but Marie Antoinette-style utterances such as these only further distance him from the public.” All privilege and no responsibility: “The Duke and Duchess can’t have all the privilege of royal life with scant few of the concomitant responsibilities. Whereas latchkey kids and working parents just have to get on with it, he faffs about in Norfolk, being lord of the manor and putting in the occasional stint with the East Anglian Air Ambulance….Ordinary dads — whose taxes contribute towards the royal lifestyle — must find it a bit insulting that William luxuriates in the home life they can never have themselves. And while he might mean well, if William wants to earn the respect and affection of the British public, he is going to have to work a lot harder. In more ways than one.” [From The Daily Mail] Boom. I mean, Moir’s piece reads like our comment section, but it’s just further proof (in what is becoming a mountain of evidence) that the tide has really turned with William… and perhaps to a lesser degree, Kate. It does feel like William is getting the brunt of it, which is as it should be. He’s the one who is convinced he’s some sort of PR genius. He’s the one scheming away for ways to avoid work. He’s the one who comes across as “arrogant” and “spoiled.” Last thing – Us Weekly had an extremely unfortunate write-up about how William and Kate were able to have an in-hotel “spa day” during their tour of India. They apparently spent several hours getting royally pampered, complete with soothing wraps and massages. I’m so glad they were able to have a little mini-vacation within their taxpayer-funded vacation, you guys. Photos courtesy of WENN, Fame/Flynet, PCN.

Star: LeAnn Rimes’ friends think Eddie Cibrian will leave when she’s broke

For many, many years now, the tabloids have been obsessed with the idea that LeAnn Rimes is running out of money, or that she’s bad with money, or that she spends too much money supporting her perpetually underemployed husband, Eddie Cibrian. I honestly believe a lot of those stories. While LeAnn was at one time pretty well off, she doesn’t have a lot of income coming in, and she has likely spent a good chunk of her savings since marrying Eddie. But still, we wait for the money to really dry up, and it hasn’t… yet. Which is my way of saying that this Star story could have been published at any point in the past six years: Turns out you can’t live a jet-set lifestyle on zero dollars a year – just ask LeAnn Rimes, who’s hoping a comeback tour will get her finances back in the black. And if it doesn’t, insiders believe it won’t just break the bank, but also her marriage to actor Eddie Cibrian! “LeAnn knows she’s neglected her career for too long,” admits a friend. “At this point she’s known more for her affair with Eddie than for being a singer.” LeAnn’s last album, 2013’s Spitfire, was a flop, and Eddie’s last major job was a three-episode stint on Baby Daddy. “They’ve coasted off LeAnn’s savings since they got together five years ago, but they live large with a huge mansion and lots of trips,” adds the insider. “Plus, she helps support his two sons.” Now LeAnn is ready to hit the road for a big concert tour… just with only two small shows scheduled this year, friends wonder if her dire financial straits will shatter her marriage to the 42-year-old Cibrian, who has grown accustomed to the A-list lifestyle, fueled by his wife’s nest egg. “Eddie married a rich girl on purpose,” says the pal. “So what happens when that’s no longer the case?” [From Star Magazine, print edition] The problem isn’t just that LeAnn is more known for the affair, it’s that she’s known for being a crazy Single White Female and a Twitter-stalker and all of that. And that means no one is really interested in hearing her sing. It’s a weird, LeAnn-specific conundrum, really. There are plenty of C-listers able to find revenue streams through social media, club appearances, random promotional work and guest appearances. But I get the feeling that A) LeAnn thinks a lot of that stuff is beneath her and B) no one is offering those deals to LeAnn anyway. What makes this story extra-funny is that Eddie’s rep went to Gossip Cop to deny it! Did you know Eddie still has a rep? He hasn’t worked in a year, and even then (as Star points out), it was just a minor guest spot on basic-cable. How does he still afford to have a publicist, hm? Well, Eddie DOES have a rep and the rep says: “Their marriage is fine… their finances are fine.” CASE CLOSED! Also, LeAnn posted this on her Instagram. I have no words. I was 14, he was 23. We don't remember meeting. He found this in the garage while going through boxes. 14 years later who knew we'd meet again. Crazy, all the life that happened between those two encounters, the lessons that needed to be learned. Fate? Chance? Serendipity? Who knows ? All we do know is, here we are together and tomorrow we are celebrating 5 years of being married and we wouldn't want to be anywhere else. #crazylove #lovers #friends #partners #hubby #anniversary #5years #throwback #throwbackthursday #tbt ❤️ A photo posted by LeAnn Rimes Cibrian (@leannrimes) on Apr 21, 2016 at 8:39am PDT Photos courtesy of WENN, Fame/Flynet, Instagram.
