Leo DiCaprio throws shade at politicians who don’t believe in ‘modern science’

Here are some photos of Leonardo DiCaprio in Japan this week to promote the Japanese premiere of The Revenant. Japan usually gets films several months later than America and Europe, so this is no big deal. And Leo has a lot of Japanese fans, and many of them literally dressed up as bears to see him in Tokyo. During the press conference for the film, Leo was asked about one of his signature issues: the environment, or more specifically, the reality and politics of climate change. His answer was pretty pointed, even though he didn’t specifically name names. Fresh from his Oscar-winning role in “The Revenant,” Leonardo DiCaprio suggested Wednesday that his upcoming documentary on climate change could help raise awareness about a phenomenon that some US presidential candidates reject. DiCaprio said one of the collaborators for the film to be released before the November election was Fisher Stevens, a producer of the 2010 Oscar-winning documentary “The Cove” about dolphin-killing in the small Japanese town of Taiji. “We’ve been travelling around the world documenting climate change,” DiCaprio told a press conference in Tokyo, adding they visited China, India and the North Pole and South Pole. Though he did not offer any names, he said some candidates seeking the highest US office are falling short in their environmental attitudes. “We should not have a candidate who doesn’t believe in modern science to be leading our country,” he said. “Climate change is one of the most concerning issues facing all humanity and the United States needs to do its part.” Republican front-runner Donald Trump said last year he did not believe in climate change, while his key rival Ted Cruz has dismissed it as “pseudo-scientific theory”. [From AFP] While it seems like his statement is actually pretty obvious, and that the overwhelmingly majority of people would agree, it actually IS being treated as a controversy in the conservative media. Because they would disagree with the fundamental idea that the president of the United States should believe/know that climate change is real, that all of this is really happening. It is SCIENCE, despite what a handful of oil-and-gas “scientists” want to tell the GOP. That’s what I never understood about the GOP side of this argument – if they want to say that we shouldn’t do anything about climate change, then argue that point. Don’t make it into an argument about whether climate change is real, because yes, then you do sound anti-science. And dumb. Photos courtesy of WENN.

Fox News: Donald Trump has an ‘extreme, sick obsession’ with Megyn Kelly

It’s been said before, but it’s worth repeating: Megyn Kelly is Donald Trump’s “type.” She’s blonde and beautiful, she’s intelligent, she’s got a hard, conservative edge and even she admits that he spent years trying to “woo” her. She told Vanity Fair a few months ago that Trump would send press clippings to her (press clippings about her) and sign them “Donald Trump.” My belief is that Trump’s raging hate-on for Megyn these days is mostly the hate-on some men have for women who have spurned their advances. Like, when he’s trying to woo you, you are the most beautiful, magical creature and as soon as you tell him you’re not interested (or that you’re both married to other people), suddenly he’s calling you a crazy bitch and/or a flighty bimbo, and you’re definitely on the rag. As I mentioned last week, Trump has renewed his attacks on Megyn Kelly. He has been tweeting a lot about how no one should watch “crazy Megyn” and her Fox News show. He tweeted: “Everybody should boycott the @megynkelly show. Never worth watching. Always a hit on Trump! She is sick, & the most overrated person on tv.” And more. At this point, he’s the presumptive GOP presidential nominee, so it does seem… I don’t know? Petty? Misogynistic? Idiotic? All of the above? But I always think he sounds that way. But what was interesting is that Fox News is finally getting serious about defending one of their big talents. They issued a statement about Trump’s tweets, saying: “Donald Trump’s vitriolic attacks against Megan Kelly and his extreme, sick obsession with her is beneath the dignity of a presidential candidate who wants to occupy the highest office in the land,” Fox News said in a statement. “Megan is an exemplary journalist and one of the leading anchors in America — we’re extremely proud of her phenomenal work and continue to fully support her throughout every day of Trump’s endless barrage of crude and sexist verbal assaults.” [From Us Weekly] It feels like we’re through the looking glass, doesn’t it? I mean… I can’t remember a time when a political candidate running for the highest office in the land had to be publicly slammed by a cable news network for the misogynistic crap he was tweeting about a major news show anchor. And yes, I never thought I would write this, but: Fox News is right. Trump has an extreme, sick obsession with Megyn Kelly. And it feels like a creepy dude at a bar is mad at Megyn because she spurned his advances. Crazy @megynkelly says I don't (won't) go on her show and she still gets good ratings. But almost all of her shows are negative hits on me! — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) March 19, 2016 If crazy @megynkelly didn't cover me so much on her terrible show, her ratings would totally tank. She is so average in so many ways! — Donald J. Prince Harry’s Nepal trip involved pretending to be a tiger & being adorable

In between his work with wounded veterans and his advance work for the Invictus Games in May, Prince Harry found time to make a trip to Nepal. These are some lovely photos of Harry over the weekend and today in Nepal. So far, he’s visited some of the sites destroyed by 2015 earthquake and he’s visited some Red Cross sites as they are still on the ground dealing with the humanitarian disaster. Like Prince William, Harry cares about conservation efforts. Unlike William, Harry doesn’t deflect to conservation work when he’s being criticized for being work-shy. Harry visited the Bardia National Park in search of tigers, but he didn’t get to see any. He did get to see an elephant though! And he got to play-act at being a tiger for the tiger camera-trap. When Harry signed the guest book, he literally signed it “Capt. Wales!” With an exclamation point, because he’s adorable. Tonight he’s going to be spending the night in the “hamlet” of Leorani, in the mountains. I think he’s going to camp out. Lovely, lovely Harry. The @KensingtonRoyal Twitter has been posting tons of pics – go here to see more. PS… Lately there hasn’t been a lot of love for Harry, so if you want me to continue writing about him when we get new photos, honk if you love Harry!! Photos courtesy of Pacific Coast News.

Melissa McCarthy on her weight loss: ‘No trick, just super boring life’

Melissa McCarthy is promoting her new movie The Boss, which opens April 8. As I have mentioned, I am a big fan of Melissa since falling in love with her on Gilmore Girls. Of her movies, however, Spy is just about the only one I enjoyed. I am cautiously optimistic about The Boss though. If the trailers are to be believed, her character, Michelle Darnell, is a competent businessperson and the joke has nothing to do with weight. Her character Sookie’s weight on Gilmore Girls was never a joke; it wasn’t until she went mainstream Hollywood that her weight was brought front and center. Now that Melissa has lost 50 pounds (brava to her) her weight is an even bigger focus and everyone wants to know her secret. According to Melissa, the secret isn’t that sexy: Actress Melissa McCarthy channels a foul-mouthed, over-the-top Martha Stewart caricature in her new movie “The Boss,” but it is her personal transformation that has everyone talking. The 45-year-old actress looked incredible at a press junket for the film. She lost a reported 50 pounds, and revealed there is no big secret to her weight loss. She told “Extra’s” Charissa Thompson it is actually her lifestyle that contributed to the change. “No trick, nothing to tell, just super boring life. You bring it real down, you don’t do anything fun and you go to bed at 7:30 — that’s the trick.” She went on to say her husband, Ben Falcone, will ask, “Is it five and are you in jammies?” to which she responds, “I’m gonna call them loungewear.” [From Extra TV] Melissa is accepting compliments graciously but shies away from any real weight-loss discussion. I can appreciate her position as she has often emphasized that weight doesn’t really matter to her. She told Rolling Stone, in 2014, “I could eat healthier, I could drink less. I should be learning another language and working out more, but I’m just always saying, ‘Ah, I could get hit by a bus tomorrow.” I get the sense that she does not want to be another celebrity who loses weight and all of a sudden the only thing that matters is weight loss. Melissa is wearing her Seven7 clothing line during this press junket. I really liked a few pieces from her Holiday Line, but I think she does bottoms better than tops. The line is doing well, however, and Melissa continues to put emphasis on it being an all-inclusive line, joining the voices wishing to dismiss “plus-size” as a descriptor. Beatrice Casiraghi wore Giambattista Valli to the Rose Ball: amazing or tragic?

The Grimaldis celebrated one of their biggest annual events over the weekend. Every year, Prince Albert hosts the Rose Ball, a huge fundraiser for the Princess Grace Foundation, one of the Grimaldis’ big charitable organizations. The Rose Ball is a huge deal. So is it weird that Princess Charlene didn’t come out for it? I’ve been saying that Charlene and Albert seem a lot stronger now that they’ve got an heir and a spare (Gabrielle and Jacques), but it also feels like Charlene skips out on a lot of stuff now that she’s got the babies as an excuse to not be around. So, at this year’s Rose Ball, Albert’s sister Princess Caroline acted as hostess, and her children came out. Andrea and his wife Tatiana were there, as were the rest of her kids: Pierre Casiraghi and his new wife Beatrice, Charlotte Casiraghi (who was also missing her partner, Gad), and Princess Alexandra of Hanover, who is Caroline’s youngest child, the only child Caroline had with Ernst August of Hanover. Caroline and Ernst are pretty much separated full time – I don’t think he’s ever in Monaco, and he seems to live with a succession of mistresses all around the world. Just FYI. As for the fashion, Caroline, Charlotte and Alexandra all wore Chanel. Karl Lagerfeld is particularly close to the Grimaldis, and he often dresses the royal women. I personally like that Charlotte went with a caped pantsuit, it looks daring and modern on her, although the silk satin is slightly budget for Chanel. The big show-stopped look came from Beatrice Casiraghi, who married Pierre last summer in a lavish, multi-nation extravaganza. Beatrice is Italian, so she chose to wear an Italian designer: Giambattista Valli. Her gown with big, frothy and red. I actually like the big-ball-gown look, and my only real qualm is that with all of that old-money and glamour, her wispy bangs still look kind of awful. Photos courtesy of Pacific Coast News.

Serena Williams: Maria Sharapova ‘showed a lot of courage to admit’ to doping

Yesterday, we discussed how Maria Sharapova tested positive for a banned substance. The substance? Meldonium, which Sharapova openly admitted she has been taking for 10 years. Meldonium was just added to the banned-substance list in 2016, a fact which Sharapova claims she was unaware of. The claim that she was unaware has brought mixed reactions, and one of the best pieces I’ve read was this Guardian piece, where they basically say that Sharapova is one of the most heavily managed, structured and well-staffed athletes in the world, so how is it possible that she was unaware of the changes in the banned-substance list? While you ponder that, Serena Williams and Caroline Wozniacki have both chimed in. Just FYI: Caroline and Serena are really close friends and I can totally picture the two of them texting like crazy throughout the Sharapova news conference on Monday. While a Tuesday press conference was supposed to highlight World Tennis Day, the annual celebration didn’t get much airtime. Instead, most questions focused on Maria Sharapova’s Monday announcement that she failed a drug test at this year’s Australian Open. World No.1 Serena Williams and two-time year-end World No.1 Caroline Wozniacki spoke about the revelation. “I think like everyone else said most people were surprised and shocked by Maria,” Williams said. “Most people were happy that she was upfront and very honest and showed a lot of courage to admit to what she had done and what she had neglected to look at in terms of the list at the end of the year.” Wozniacki explained that as a tennis pro, she pays special attention to what she consumes. “Any time we take medication, we double and triple check because sometimes even things like cough drops and nasal sprays can be on the list,” she said. “As athletes, we always make sure to really make sure there’s nothing in it that could put us in a bad situation.” Williams continued, “It’s just taking the responsibility, which she was willing to do and ready to. I hope for the best for everyone in that situation.” During the conference, Williams was also asked Nike’s decision to suspend its endorsement deal with Sharapova. Williams, who is poised to become the world’s highest-paid female athlete after the Russian’s announcement, demurred. “I can’t comment on Nike,” said Williams who is endorsed by the company. “I think they’re a successful, huge billion dollar company and make their own decisions and obviously know how to make great decisions.” [From Fortune] Wozniacki came in with the pointed comment, not Serena, did you notice that? Like, Caroline was the one with the judgy “well, when you’re a professional athlete, you’re supposed to be pay attention to what you’re taking” comment. While there has historically been no love lost between Sharapova and Serena Williams, I feel like Wozniacki might have a beef with Sharapova too. As for the Nike thing, it’s true – Sharapova’s lucrative, $70-million Nike contract has been “suspended.” TAG Heuer and Porsche have also suspended their sponsorship deals with Sharapova. The Independent did a fascinating breakdown of how quickly Sharapova has been losing sponsors, compared to male athletes who have tested positive for banned substances. The theory seems to be that there is sexism at play, that Nike in particular has given male athletes more time and consideration before pulling their contracts. While I think there’s definitely a sexist element to how quickly Sharapova is being thrown under the bus, I also think it’s a little late to complain about it, considering Sharapova has made an incredible fortune for herself just by being lithe and blonde and camera-ready. The Cambridges ‘were just like a family on holiday but with loads of help’

Just thought you’d like to see the front page of The Sun! I love how The Sun doesn’t even care, they’re just calling him Work-Shy Will all the time now. The Daily Mail has been doing it too. Anyway, if you’re still reeling from how tone-deaf the Cambridges’ vacation was, you’re not alone. Obviously, a lot of people in the British media feel the same way. Which is why all the papers have been on the hunt for damaging details about the trip, or any unnamed-source willing to go on the record about how out of touch William and Kate are. HuffPo UK ran some coverage about how Piers Morgan claimed William “hates the press and this is a very deliberate and unacceptable attempt to shackle and control them.” To which HuffPo’s “source” said: A source told The Huffington Post UK that this was not the case and the Cambridges’ decision to holiday in relative privacy was borne out of a desire to shield their young children from a stressful exchange with the media. The source said: “The Duke and Duchess feel strongly that small children should not be paraded around the media and inviting a trusted photographer allowed pictures to be shared with the public in an less obtrusive way. There are no deals to be done around the privacy of the children, and they [the Duke and Duchess] are confident in the decisions they are making.” [From HuffPo UK] That’s their habit, whenever anyone questions the way Will and Kate operate, they deflect to their children. It’s all for their kids, and they are raising their kids their way. Except that The Telegraph points out the holiday was mostly a getaway for Will and Kate, and they brought lots of nannies and staff to handle the children. Details have begun to emerge of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s first family holiday as a family in D, which included arriving by private jet and dining in some of the resort’s finest restaurants. They took Prince George, two, and Princess Charlotte, 10 months, on a four-night secret jaunt to the French Alps, with Kensington Palace only releasing photographs following their return to the UK. Conditions were too dangerous on Wednesday to land at Courchevel’s altiport, which has a runway of just 537m and is considered to be one of the most dangerous airports in the world. With no lighting aids, landing in fog and low clouds is impossible. Instead, the royal family are believed to have flown by private jet with their close friend James Meade and his wife Lady Laura Marsham. The jet reportedly owned by the billionaire Duke of Westminster, to Chambery and travelled the remaining 60 miles by a chauffeur-driven private hire car. The royal family and their entourage of nannies and security guards stayed at a luxury chalet in Courchevel 1850, the most expensive district in Les Trois Vallees, hiring an English team of chalet staff from a local company. Lined with designer boutiques including Dior, Chanel and Prada, the resort is the highest in Courchevel and boasts five Michelin star restaurants. It has more expensive hotels than any city in France other than Paris, including three with the top “Palace” rating, 16 with five-star status. The lower resorts – Courchevel Le Praz (1300), Courchevel Moriond (1650) and Courchevel Village (1550) – are more modest and affordable. An employee at Le Pilatus restaurant, at the base of the slopes, said that the royal couple enjoyed a meal at the restaurant during their stay at the exclusive resort….The couple appeared to have just been skiing and were accompanied but two adult friends but no children, he added. The Duke and Duchess were also spotted lunching alone at La Soucoupe, a popular and expensive mountain restaurant above Courchevel that is run by its vivacious owner, Marta Pecchio. The restaurant on the piste, which is only accessible by skiing, has a roaring log fire and serves dishes such as tagliatelle with truffles, squid cooked in its own ink, or grilled lobster. A diner at the restaurant said: “They clearly seemed to be enjoying themselves. They were on their own without even a ski instructor, just like normal people. There was no obvious sign of any security guards.” Emily Taylor, 23, from London, saw William and Kate walking just outside a bar on Thursday lunchtime. “I think George had been in a ski lesson because someone was carrying really baby skis,” she told the Daily Mail. “They looked happy and were just walking and talking. A nanny was looking after Charlotte. They were just like a family on holiday but with loads of help.” [From The Telegraph] Of all the complaints that I have about the Cambridges, I have really never cared about the fact that they have child care. They have nannies… so what? A lot of people have nannies. What I do care about is A) when they lie about how much help they have and B) when they lie about how everything is for the children when clearly, Will and Kate just wanted to go on vacation. They brought along their kids so they could pose for photos with them and then William and Kate enjoyed the rest of their holiday without dealing with the kids. And they honestly believed that everyone would just be so grateful to see the kids that no one would question it further.
