Chris Evans isn’t ruling out running for political office: ‘I would never say never’

Captain America fans be damned, I’ve never really been a huge Chris Evans stan. I don’t have a problem with him, it’s just that he sometimes (SOMETIMES) seems like a neurotic whiner. But he’s not like that in his interview with the new issue of Esquire Middle East. He comes across well and almost sort-of Captain America-like. Before now, I had no idea that his uncle is currently serving in the House of Representatives. His uncle is Rep. Mike Capuano. Do they call him “Cap” too?! Anyway, Chris talks about politics and more. Some highlights: Whether he would run for political office: “I would never say never. I’ve always thought it would be nice one day to think about some sort of political pursuit. I’m so proud of my uncle and of anyone who dedicates themselves to helping the progression of society in exacting change for the betterment of mankind. Ultimately, there’s very few things that I consider to be noble and challenging. I know that Washington is a tough place. I have my opinions and maybe later on in life I might try and actually get up on a soap box.” Directing his first movie, Before We Go: “I’d wanted to direct for a long time. It’s just hard to find someone who’s willing to let you direct. I have no training. I’ve never been to any sort of school, so it’s a gamble. It was a situation where we found a script that felt manageable. This was a simple story; it’s two people. It just felt very contained and, not to sound awful, but I aimed a little low, just because I wanted to get my feet wet. I think there’s no shame in that. I didn’t want to bite off more than I could chew the first time out.” What happened as a director: “There were a lot of things I thought I was prepared for that never became a problem, and things I didn’t think would be an issue that ended up being one. So it was very eye opening. But I loved the experience and I want to do it again. I’m trying to aim a little higher in terms of the story and the scope. I feel a little more comfortable behind the camera, and it’s now just about finding the right script. Because the really great scripts are snatched up by the really great directors. So it’s about digging and trying to find the diamond in the rough.” He’ll take more of a break from acting when he has kids: “I would never stop acting completely, because I do love it, but if I was to get married and have kids, I could see myself wanting to be less of a famous actor. The fame thing is the tricky part, especially when you have children, and there is a nice element to the investment in directing. Even the amount of time and passion required for pre- and post-production; you’re with a project intimately for a year. As an actor you’ve got a few months and then you completely forget about it. So I like that connection, and I like that you can be a little more in the shadows but still be part of a profession that you’re in love with.” On ambition: “My big ambition is to not have a big ambition. I know it’s kind of strange but mu goal in life is to practice trying to be present on a daily basis. I think, as people, our consciousness is spread out. We analyze the past, we worry about the future, and it’s all fueled by fear and pain and all these negative things. Even when its good it’s going to be not good in a minute. Then you’re chasing it again. It’s all rooted in time and I think my big ambition is to really practice the ability to quiet my brain a little and just learn how to enjoy the moment.” [From E! News] I didn’t see Before We Go, but I remember that the reviews weren’t bad or anything. He didn’t embarrass himself and he’ll probably be given another opportunity to direct, because Hollywood loves rewarding white guys. I’m just saying… if a black, Asian or Hispanic actor had made the jump to directing and made so little impact with their first film, would they be given another opportunity? As for what he says about possibly running for political office… I actually like that idea. He doesn’t carry around the kind of personal baggage that many “political” actors have – as in, I know less about Chris’s personal life than George Clooney, Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, etc. And I think it’s cute that he’s already planning ahead for when he’s married and has kids. PS… Chris debuted this new clip from Captain America: Civil War at the MTV Movie Awards. Melissa McCarthy Has a Message for Body Shamers

Melissa McCarthy recently showed off a 50-pound weight loss, but truth be told, she doesn’t really want to talk about it. “If that is the most interesting thing about me, I need to go have a lavender farm in Minnesota and give this up,” she told Refinery29. “There are so many more intriguing things about women than their butt or their this or their that. It can’t be the first question every time, or a question at all.” Regrettably, women today are still being scrutinized for their weight, and today, the actress took to Instagram to vent her frustration. She posted an image of a sign stuck to a mirror that reads, “WARNING: Reflections in this mirror may be distorted by socially constructed ideas of ‘beauty.'” Well said.  In the caption, she included her own poignant message: “We have to stop categorizing and judging women based on their bodies. We are teaching young girls to strive for unattainable perfection instead of feeling healthy and happy in their own skin. ‘Imagine we are linked not ranked.’ Gloria Steinem” Looks like she’s ready to start a conversation, or more likely, end the one that’s been going on for far too long.  The star is tired of women being valued solely for their bodies when they have so much more to offer. “We’re always being ranked and when we come together, you know, women are amazing together,” she said in a recent interview. “Women are friends. Women are not really competing with each other. I think everyone wants to make it seem that way with who wore it better, whose butt is better, whose glasses are crazier. I’ve never had any of those conversations in my life.” For the record, we are fans of everything Melissa has to offer, whether she’s cracking us up in film and TV, designing a fashion line or demonstrating her newfound skill: straight up killing it in a lip sync battle. Would we feel differently about the monarchy if Prince Harry was the heir?

Here are some photos of Dirty Ginger Snap Prince Harry unveiling the UK Invictus Team in London on Wednesday. These photos made me sigh deeply and think about his mother. I actually thought, “His mother would be so proud of him in this moment.” To turn his military career into something so positive for veterans… it’s a unique and wonderful thing. At this event, Harry spent a lot of time posing with veterans (and a dog!) – go here to read more. The Invictus Games are in May, and Harry still has more to do to promote the games and work with some of the commonwealth teams. It’s just been announced that he will be traveling to Toronto on May 2 to launch the countdown to the games and meet the Canadian Invictus team. While Harry is in Florida next month, he’ll also be playing a polo match for charity, and he’s bringing his favorite horse. With all of this positivity about Harry (HONKS!), would it be weird if we also discussed the recent comments by Dr Anna Whitelock? She’s a historian – a royal-history historian – and she gave an interview a few days ago about how the British monarchy will likely end in our lifetimes. Whitelock predicted that after the Queen has passed, there will be a larger conversation about ending the monarchy, especially when Charles takes the throne. Whitelock said, in part: “All of those questions about ‘What the hell do we want this kind of unelected family (for)? What does that represent in Britain today?’, all these profound questions have been held in check because of the Queen. I think there’ll be a discussion and a debate in a way that there hasn’t before [after the Queen dies]. As the older generation who are generally more wedded to the monarchy die out, the question of the future of the monarchy will become even more pressing, and then potentially more critical voices will come to the fore. I would say by 2030 there will be definite louder clamours for the eradication of the monarchy. I can’t say that there won’t be a monarchy. I would definitely say that the monarchy – its purpose, what it’s about, will be questioned and challenged in a way that it hasn’t been before. I don’t think it’s out of the question that the monarchy would be potentially be on its last legs.” [From The Express] I do wonder what will happen after the Queen passes. I’ve stopped worrying about what Charles would be like as a king, just because he’s a workhorse and I believe he genuinely cares about public service. Charles has always been prepared to step up to whatever challenges would face him. But yes, when the queen passes and Charles becomes king, there will be these conversations and it will mostly be about what comes after Charles, whose reign will likely be brief. Because people are actually pretty concerned about Workshy Will. If Harry was the heir? If Harry was going to be the Prince of Wales? I think it would be a different story altogether. In Touch: Drew Barrymore & Will have been separated for a year

Embed from Getty Images The tabloids reported last fall that Drew Barrymore and Will Kopelman were having problems and had been living apart for a while. Then of course they announced last Friday that they were formally splitting and planned to divorce soon. In Touch now claims that Drew is the one who decided to separate after she had a personal revelation during her 40th birthday vacation that she was unhappy in her marriage. This is consistent with everything we’ve heard in major celebrity outlets, and it’s not surprising that there’s a specific moment when Drew decided to leave. That seems so much like her. In Touch magazine, on newsstands tomorrow, is reporting that a turning point for Drew came in February 2015, when she turned 40. She took a trip to Hawaii and realized how unhappy she was. “Inside, she was crying,” a family insider tells In Touch. “She felt like she wasn’t in control of her life anymore.” Things got worse quickly. “Drew began contacting her attorneys in the fall of 2015,” the family insider adds. “She tried to keep it together for as long as she could, but their relationship was broken beyond repair.” “Part of the problem is that Drew and Will are total opposites. He’s very organized and used to keeping a schedule, and Drew’s flighty, always late and is truly a wild child at heart,” the family insider tells In Touch. “Because she came from a broken family, Drew tried so hard to play the devoted wife role. She desperately wanted that sense of family and stability, and for a while she thought she found that in Will.” But in 2014, she returned to the big screen with the Adam Sandler dud Blended. “At that point, she wanted to ramp up her career again and Will didn’t want her to,” says the family insider. “They fought bitterly about it.” Adds a source close to Drew, “There was no infidelity, nothing dramatic like that. This has been going on for a long time. They’ve been working on their issues. In the end, they feel like, ‘This is a bummer. We tried.’” The couple remains on good terms. “They are still living together,” says the source close to Drew. “They have places in NYC and in LA. Both are in LA right now, living in the same house.” [From In Touch] That sounds about right, and we’ve heard it several times now – Drew was unhappy, she did some soul searching, they tried for a while and ultimately ended it. It’s sad but it happens to so many couples. They seem to be putting their kids first and focusing on what matters. E! also has an insider story about Drew, and it reinforces the narratives in US Magazine and People this week. Their insider says that “This was a slow burn. It was not a decision that they came to over night. They worked on things for a long time and have had time to adjust.” As I mentioned yesterday, this sounds so much like all the stories around the Garner-Affleck split and I don’t think that’s a coincidence. Drew’s longterm friend, Cameron Diaz, was on Andy Cohen’s XM show promoting her new book recently. Andy asked her if she’d reached out to Drew after hearing about her split and she responded in general terms, but it sounds like she has. She said “Everybody pulls the wagons around, you know, our friends, whoever needs us in whatever point in time. Even if it’s something that the public doesn’t know about. Internally we’re all going, like, ‘OK, who needs us now?’ And that really is, I think, a major part of the connectivity we need. We need to keep those things connected.” So it sounds like Cameron has known for some time that Drew is having relationship trouble. Drew just talked about Cameron in her Marie Claire interview so I don’t doubt that Cameron has been helping her. Plus she recently Instagrammed this: I am so proud of my dearest girlfriend. She is smart! Kind! Fun! And now has her second book available with all her knowledge and passion! #longevitybook @camerondiaz get yours today LINK in my BIO A photo posted by Drew Barrymore (@drewbarrymore) on Apr 5, 2016 at 12:56pm PDT Embed from Getty Images This is Will, Drew and Will’s sister, Jill Kargman. Tom Hiddleston came to Vegas for the ACM Awards: would you hit it?

I’m pretty sure the Dragonflies knew/suspected this: Tom Hiddleston made an appearance at last night’s Academy of Country Music Awards. He’s still shilling for I Saw the Light, so he went to pay homage to country music and Hank Williams and all of that. I think Tom looked really nice – his hair didn’t look shellacked, and it almost looks like he spent the day doing dirty things in a Las Vegas hotel room (the ACM Awards were held in Vegas). In other Hiddles news, his full Daily Beast interview was released over the weekend – you can read the full piece here. He has a lot to say about music in general, how much he loves Radiohead and Nirvana and Amy Winehouse and more. I’m including some other photos of some of the “hot guys” at the ACM Awards. Mostly because… you guys, I’m developing a thing for Luke Bryan. I used to think he was a boring country douche-bro, but as time goes on… I think I like him. Sort of. At the very least, I find him attractive. Those sexy beanpoles get me every damn time. Luke was the co-host of the ACM Awards along with Dierks Bentley. The reviews of their performance were… mixed. Here’s Scotty McCreery. I’m not into him, but some of you might be. And here’s Sam Hunt, one of the few highlights from this year’s Grammys. He needs different hair and some lessons on how to pose on the carpet, but otherwise… he looks good. Final guy: Dierks Bentley, the other co-host. My mom thinks he’s good-looking. I’m not feeling it. Susan Sarandon & Debra Messing are Twitter-beefing about Bernie Sanders

Susan Sarandon and Debra Messing are in a Twitter war. Those are words I never thought I would write. The whole thing started when Sarandon did an interview on Chris Hayes’ MSNBC show, All In. Here’s the exchange that got the controversy-ball rolling: SARANDON: I think Bernie would probably encourage people to [support Hillary if he loses] because he doesn’t have any ego in this thing. But I think a lot of people are, ‘sorry, I just can’t bring myself to [vote for Hillary].’ HAYES: How about you personally? SARANDON: I don’t know. I’m going to see what happens. HAYES: Really? SARANDON: Really. It’s dangerous to think we can continue the way we are with the militarized police force, with the death penalty and the low minimum wage and threats to women’s rights and think you can’t do something huge to turn that around. The country is not in good shape if you’re in the middle class. It’s disappearing. [From Salon] A lot of people took Sarandon’s words in the proper context and assumed that she was coming close to advocating for Democrats, liberals and progressives to stay home if Hillary Clinton gets the nomination. Sarandon was widely criticized for her “blind privilege” and more. She was even criticized by Hollywood actresses like Jamie Lee Curtis and Debra Messing. I respect but disagree with @SusanSarandon. A possible support of Trump over @HillaryClinton is dangerous 2 women, minorities & immigrants. — Jamie Lee Curtis (@jamieleecurtis) March 29, 2016 Of course I would never support Trump for any reason. If you watch the interview you'll see that's not what I said. https://t.co/wQk0cMmeyp — Susan Sarandon (@SusanSarandon) March 29, 2016 Susan Sarandon muses tht Trump prezcy wud b better 4 the country thn Hillary.Wonder if she'd say that if she were poor, gay,Muslim or immgrnt — Debra Messing (@DebraMessing) March 30, 2016 2- the idea that Susan Sarandon wud say that NOT supporting Hillary in a HRC/Trump race is a legitimate choice for Democrats, is insane. — Debra Messing (@DebraMessing) March 30, 2016 Then why didn't you say that? Please make that clear in the future. For women's sake if for no one else. https://t.co/gzB55L43qj — Debra Messing (@DebraMessing) March 30, 2016 After that, there was a flurry of tweets, retweets, replies, etc. For those you not following it, you can see Susan’s Twitter feed here and Debra’s feed here. Be careful of Debra’s Twitter, she’s talking to everybody and there are literally hundreds of tweets and re-tweets from the past few days. The basic gist seems to be that Susan left the door open for either voting for Trump (because he would start a revolution?) or staying home if Hillary Clinton got the nomination. Debra was being sort of pedantic about what Susan actually said and did not say during the interview, but the fact of the matter is that Susan is not advocating voting for anyone other than Bernie Sanders, even if Clinton gets the nomination. And considering the very real possibility of Donald Trump or Ted Cruz getting the GOP nomination, I do think that’s a privileged stance to take. Photos courtesy of WENN.

Bernie Sanders calls George Clooney’s ritzy Clinton fundraisers ‘obscene’

George Clooney spoke about his support for Hillary Clinton several months ago, when he was promoting Hail Caesar. Clooney has always been a big Hollywood Democrat, and he supported John Kerry and Barack Obama in past presidential election cycles. Clooney has made no secret of his support for Clinton this time around, but he also hasn’t said anything negative about Bernie Sanders. The only person Clooney has criticized is Donald Trump. Anyway, George and Amal Clooney are cohosting two major California fundraisers for Clinton’s campaign and the DNC. The fundraiser tickets cost $33,400, and the Clooneys have co-hosts like Jeffrey Katzenberg, Steven Spielberg and more. This usually happens, by the way – the Hollywood Democrats and Silicon Valley Democrats will throw several big (and big-money) fundraisers in LA and San Francisco every presidential election cycle. But Hillary Clinton’s competition, Bernie Sanders, doesn’t like it. He thinks the Clooneys represent “big money people.” “It is obscene that Secretary Clinton keeps going to big-money people to fund her campaign,” Bernie Sanders said in an interview on CNN’s “State of the Union” Sunday. Clinton is asking donors for $353,400 for two seats at the head table with herself, Clooney and his wife, Amal, at the April 15 event in San Francisco. The next night, the Clooneys will host a $33,400 per person fundraiser for Clinton at the couple’s Los Angeles home. “I have a lot of respect for George Clooney. He’s a great actor. I like him,” Sanders said. “But this is the problem with American politics … Big money is dominating our political system. And [my supporters and I] are trying to move as far away from that as we can.” Sanders, whose campaign has been largely funded by small donations, says his events usually cost “$15 or $50” to get into. “So it’s not a criticism of Clooney,” he said. “It’s a criticism of a corrupt campaign finance system, where big money interests — and it’s not Clooney, it’s the people coming to this event — have undue influence on the political process.” Throughout the Democratic primary, the self-described democratic socialist has attacked Clinton’s ties to Wall Street. He did so again Sunday. “It’s not only this Clooney event,” Sanders said. “It is the fact she has now raised well over $15 million from Wall Street for her super-PAC, and millions more from the fossil fuel industry, and from the drug companies.” Clinton’s Clooney swing comes less than two months before the crucial Democratic primary on June 7 in California, where 475 delegates are at stake. [From Yahoo] CB and I were debating this between ourselves – she’s a Bernie fan, and she agrees with what he’s saying. Meanwhile I voted for Clinton in the Virginia primary, and I did so because I honestly think Clinton is a better Democratic candidate for office. I understand Sanders’ point about getting the “big money” out of politics, and I agree with it as a moral and ethical stance. But in practice, I find it difficult to understand why Clinton (or any Democratic candidate) should be held to a different standard than the GOP candidates. Plus, I just have a fundamental disagreement with calling George Clooney a “big money” donor who will use his fundraising skills to push some agenda with Hillary Clinton. If you want to talk about the hedge fund people pushing candidates for tax cuts for billionaires, sure, let’s talk about that. But what’s on Clooney’s political agenda that isn’t already on Clinton’s agenda? Photos courtesy of WENN.
