Are you buying The Poor, Bullied Anne Hathaway Campaign of 2014?

FFN_Hathaway_Anne_EXC_TERO_110414_51576329

I covered most of the nonsense that went down with Anne Hathaway back in late 2012 and early 2013, the height of her Oscar campaign for Les Miserables. I remember how harsh people were about all things Annie, and I remember defending her… sometimes. To be fair to Annie, she’s not the first person to oversee an overzealous Oscar campaign and she’s not the first person to oversaturate the media with too many interviews, too many magazine covers, too many photo-ops, too much twee-ness (coughNataliePortmancough). To be fair to the media, Anne WAS overzealous, annoying and much, much too cloying and needy. It was like everyone forgot that, oh right, she’s actually an A-list actress with a great deal of talent. Even Annie forgot. Was the coverage of her at times overblown, rude and “bullying”? Yes, it was. But I do think there’s a difference in “bullying” coverage and coverage that was basically like “please settle down, girl, you’re embarrassing yourself.”

I bring this all up because Annie is promoting Interstellar, and she keeps speaking of that moment in her life. To hear Annie tells it, the Hathahate was like being punched and slapped. When Anne sat down with Ellen DeGeneres this week, Ellen was really nice to her and Ellen referred to what happened as “cyberbullying.” Agree or disagree? Eh. You can see the video here. Here’s what went down:

Through hate, Anne Hathaway learned to love. The actress, 31, appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show Thursday, where she opened up about the backlash she suffered after winning Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in Les Misérables.

“For whatever reason—and it’s a small group, trust me—[cyber bullies are] loud because I went through this,” host Ellen DeGeneres told her guest sympathetically. “And voices that don’t like you and say mean things really stick with you for some reason, more than voices that say, ‘You’re great!’ So, when that was going on after the Oscars, which you should have been celebrating—you won an Oscar!—and then all the sudden…Explain how you accidentally Googled something and this is what you found.”

Hathaway, a Hollywood veteran, said she “had gotten out of the habit of Googling myself because that’s just a bad idea to ever do that.” But in a rare instance, she said, “My friends and I had an idea for Funny or Die and we wanted to do something on celebrity pregnancy rumors, so we just Googled pregnancy rumors and the story came up. The title of it was ‘Why Does Everyone Hate Anne Hathaway?’”

The audience gasped, to which she said, “It’s really OK. It has a happy ending. Life continues.”

“Yes, but I know what that feels like and I think when people write things like that or say things like that it is cyber bullying,” DeGeneres told Hathaway. “How did you deal with all that?”

“Well, I listened at first. I couldn’t help it, you know? And you try to shut it off and I couldn’t, and then I realized why I couldn’t was I hadn’t learned to love myself yet. I hadn’t gotten there. And if you don’t love yourself when someone else says horrible thing to you part of you is always going to believe them,” she said. “So, then I was like, ‘OK, I don’t want to believe these people. I don’t want to agree with them on any level. And I want to figure out who I am. I want to learn who I am. I don’t want to feel like I’m fragile every time I leave the house because I’m so dependent on what other people think about me. So, I just took a step back, and as Matthew McConaughey, my co-star in Interstellar, would say, ‘I just kept living.’ And, it’s been a really cool journey,” Hathaway said. “I feel like I arrived in a place where maybe not every minute of every day, but way more than I used to, I have a tremendous amount of love and compassion for everyone else—and best of all I have it for myself, which I never enjoyed before.”

DeGeneres then offered the actress more support, saying, “There’s a great phrase: ‘What you think of me is none of my business.’ And there’s nothing wrong with being fragile. I think it’s a beautiful thing.”

[From E! News]

I too think it’s okay to be fragile and for a person to acknowledge that they’ve been hurt by certain comments. But I don’t care for the way Anne is allowing herself to be infantilized by this – she wasn’t some little girl done in by dastardly bullies, nor was she physically assaulted or damaged in any profound way. She was a grown woman flashing her Oscar Biscuit at the premiere of Les Mis and throwing hissy fits when she didn’t get her perfect Oscar dress and some people on the Internet said mean things about her. That’s it. I do agree that Annie probably didn’t “love herself” enough to ignore the haters, but… I don’t know. I’m not really feeling this whole Poor Bullied Annie Hathaway Campaign of 2014.

Anne Hathaway practiced her Oscar speech because she’s ‘aware’ of the backlash

GAH! I want this sweater coat. I’m not into the (admittedly) pretty maxi dress or the snakeskin purse (?), but I really want the coat. These are photos of Anne at a breakfast business meeting in Brentwood yesterday – perhaps she’s lining up her next project…? So far, Oscar-winner Anne Hathaway’s next films are going to be a hodge-podge of non-Oscar-bait fare, like the sequel to Rio (the animated film) and a part in her friend Joseph Gordon Levitt’s Don Jon’s Addiction (which looks rough). She’s also rumored to be attached to some Steven Spielberg Robo-something movie with Chris Hemsworth. So… no prestige pictures yet.

Meanwhile, everyone is still dealing with the Hathaway Backlash. As in, there was a backlash against her little girl voice and her cloying and her LOOK AT ME-ness. What’s horrible is that some of you accused me of being part of the backlash! Have you not been following my coverage of poor Annie? I actually like her, and I’m a full-on Hathaway apologist. Yes, she’s annoyed me at times but I was still rooting for her (mostly because she makes news and she’s fun to cover). So please don’t confuse me with all of the people with a Hathaway Hate-On. That’s not me! Although I will throw a side-eye at her for playing the victim in the wake of her Oscar win:

Practice makes perfect! After facing some backlash over her emotional Golden Globe, SAG and BAFTA acceptance speeches, Anne Hathaway worked very hard on preparing her thank-you for the Oscars.

After winning the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award on Sunday, Feb. 24, the Les Miserables actress admitted that her feelings were hurt by criticism. “It does get to me,” Hathaway, 30, said. “But you have to remember in life that there’s a positive to every negative and a negative to every positive.”

Though the actress tries to brush off the negative comments, a source tells Us Weekly that Hathaway did practice her Oscar speech a lot to try and be more likable. “She was very aware that she had been the butt of everyone’s jokes,” the source says.

Hathaway also worried about picking the perfect gown for her big night. “My dress is Prada and I didn’t know what I was wearing until about 3 hours ago,” she told Ryan Seacrest on the red carpet.

“Procrastination?” the E! host asked.

“No, I think I was just working too hard,” she explained.

Indeed, the source tells Us that Hathaway had four dresses in the running including a dress by Valentino, who designed the gown she wore to her September 2012 wedding to Adam Shulman. But the actress ultimately settled on the revealing Prada dress, telling Seacrest, “It was the one that spoke to me.”

The pale pink design featured pointy darts on the bustline that inspired a HathawayNipple Twitter account. Spoofing Hathaway’s acceptance speech, one tweet said, “Here’s hoping that someday — in the not too distant future — my wardrobe misfortunes will only be found in stories and never more in real life.”

[From Us Weekly]

Sure, there’s a “damned if she does, damned if she doesn’t” vibe about this. Some people are going to be critical of Anne no matter what. I don’t care that she worked on her acceptance speech – she came into the Oscars as a “sure thing” and she’d won every award up until that point. What bugs me is that she practiced her Oscar speech… and her speech was super-annoying. The baby voice has to go – people aren’t expecting Anne to be a breathy little girl with a “sexy baby” voice. That’s totally Kardashian/Paris Hilton. Just talk like a normal adult woman and everyone will like it so much better.

Anne Hathaway in pink Prada at Paris ‘Les Mis’ premiere: so pretty in pink?

Yeah, I’ve been trying to come up with something to hate on here – the dress isn’t fitted perfectly and it’s kind of wrinkled! – but at the end of the day, I just can’t. Anne Hathaway looks especially beautiful here, I think. These are pics from last night’s Paris premiere of Les Miserables. This Prada gown is gorgeous, and it looks stunning on her, regardless of the minor wrinkles. It could have been really cheap-looking, like a prom dress from the mall, but I think those rhinestones on the top save it. They make the whole look pop, and I’m glad that Anne didn’t do a lot of jewelry too. She kept it simple with the accessories, knowing that the dress would do the work. And hand to God, this is the best her hair has looked in MONTHS. Perfect amount of “fluffy”.

I’m assuming that Anne will be staying in or around Paris for the next few days before she heads to London for the BAFTAs on Sunday night. Crap… I just realized how busy we’re going to be with BAFTA AND Grammy coverage on Monday. Prepare yourselves, Celebitchy and Bedhead! Anyway, I’m sure that Annie will win a BAFTA for Les Mis, and I’m excited to see what she’s going to wear. Everyone keeps saying that she’s definitely going to go with Valentino for her Oscar dress, which is fine… I guess. I have a worst-case-scenario I keep running through for Annie – that Mr. Valentino is all, “You can my precious girl, I will make you something fabulous and unique and you will be the star of the Oscars!” And then Anne gets the dress at the last minute and it sucks. So… I hope she has a backup! I’m mentioning all of this because this beautiful Prada gown might have been in contention for one of the big red carpets – it’s just so pretty! It gives me hope that Annie will deliver at the BAFTAs and the Oscars.

Bonus Eddie Redmayne, because he’s so lovely.
