How much money is Duchess Kate spending on clothes for her 6-day tour?

In this post, I’m using photos of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge from their last big overseas trip, the Australian and New Zealand tour in 2014. I’m doing that because we’re going to talk about clothes, more specifically the clothes Kate will be wearing for the India-Bhutan tour, which doesn’t start until April 10. We still don’t know which designers Kate will be using for the tour, but several outlets are running previews and I guess we should start to get excited about Kate-in-a-sari. Do you think that will even happen? I would love to see her in a sari, but I think it’s far more likely that she would wear a British Indian designer, something with Indian flavor but very much a formal gown. You never know though, maybe Kate will whip out a sari. The Telegraph did a big story on what Kate will wear, but there isn’t much new info here. She’ll take 12-15 outfits for six days, she’ll have “daytime dresses and evening gowns” and hopefully at least one pair of jeggings, I’m assuming. Kate’s team – including her secretary Rebecca Deacon – did a “rehearsal trip” to India to scout locations, take photos and prepare the color story of what Kate will be wearing. Still, a royal source insists: “She is in charge of it herself and takes an interest in paying tribute to the host country with nods to their culture and local style on at least a few of the engagements. The important factor on this tour is the heat, so that’s an issue that plays a big part in the choice of outfits.” She’s likely “commissioned” some special pieces as well as looking for some stuff online. She will be traveling with Natasha Archer – who acts as her stylist (very poorly, I might add) – and Amanda Cook Tucker, who is her hairstylist/wiglet tamer. No one has any idea how much Kate is spending on clothes for this tour, but I think we can assumed that she’s easily spending $40,000 or more. Meanwhile, the Daily Mail’s gossip girl (The Girl About Town) had this interesting piece of news: The Duchess of Cambridge is to cement her title as the Queen of Norfolk by hosting a £10,000-a-head ultra-exclusive party for 80 members of the county’s high society. The lavish gala will be held at Houghton Hall, Palladian stately home of the Marquess and Marchioness of Cholmondeley, and a short drive from Kate and Wills’ Anmer Hall. Kate’s name features on the invitation and the party is in aid of the East Anglia Children’s Hospice, the charity of which Kate became a patron in 2012. Tickets start at £6,000 per head and those who pay £10,000 are invited to stay at Houghton with the Marquess and Marchioness of Cholmondeley after the party on June 22, ten days after the Queen’s 90th birthday celebrations. The ball will include a champagne reception, a lecture by writer Anthony Horowitz, live jazz, a magician, and food by top chefs including Tom Kerridge. The event is another sign that Kate will host more charitable events after Her Majesty turns 90 and will be good practice for Kate the working Royal, with an impressive list of grandees attending the proceedings in Houghton’s marble-clad Stone Hall. [From The Daily Mail] Since I’m an Anglophile, I know that “Cholmondeley” is pronounced “chumly” for British reasons. While I always applaud the very idea of Kate going to work and raising money for charity, of course the only way they’re getting Kate out of the house is by getting her to attend a fancy party full of posh people. I understand that is the definition of modern charitable fundraising, so why is it like pulling teeth to get Kate to attend/co-host charity fundraisers? Also – will Kate and William ever open up Anmer Hall for a fundraiser? Why must the Marchioness of Cholmondeley open her home for Kate’s fundraiser? Photos courtesy of WENN, Fame/Flynet.

Rihanna wears shorts, Miu Miu fur to Black Girls Rock: ridiculous or amazing?

For six years now, BET has been doing an event called Black Girls Rock! It’s about promoting positivity with African-American women and black women and showing young women of color that there are some amazing role models in their community. Considering the consistent underrepresentation of women of color in the media, I think the event is pretty great. In years past, Michelle Obama has even come out for it. And this year, Rihanna and Hillary Clinton came out. Clinton gave a speech about her African-American female role models – you can read her speech here. Rihanna was there because she picked up the Rock Star Award. In the past month, we’ve gotten more red carpet and paparazzi photos of Rihanna than we’ve had in the previous year. When she amps up her promotion, she really brings it. While I’m happy about all of the new Rihanna photos, I do wonder the interest level? Like, do you guys want more Rih-Rih? Do you want more fashion posts and street-style posts about Rihanna? I’m really asking – honk if you want more Rihanna! For the Black Girls Rock event, Rihanna wore this… unusual ensemble. With that face and that body, she can pull off nearly anything, but this outfit did leave me with a “???” thought bubble. She wore an oversized gingham blouse, shorts and a giant fur coat by Miu Miu. While I knew that Rihanna doesn’t have a problem with wearing fur, the choice of wearing fur to this event – and wearing fur over shorts and a blouse – is really strange. Rihanna also made a nice, tearful speech for her Rock Star Award: “Thank you so much for celebrating us in a world that doesn’t celebrate us enough. The minute you learn to love yourself, you will not want to be anybody else. Role model is not the title they like to give me…but I think I can inspire a lot of young women to be themselves and that is half the battle. Hopefully one day I’ll be raising my own little black girl who rocks.” [From E! News] Aw. Rihanna has been talking about babies more and more lately. It does feel like her biological clock has started ticking and she’s thinking more and more about settling down and starting a family. I genuinely believe she will be a kickass mom. Last things… Rihanna dropped her video for “Kiss It Better” last week, and you can see the NSFW video here. That single has a real ‘80s vibe and I don’t know how to feel about it. Also, Chris Hemsworth did a dramatic reading of the lyrics for “Work.” Photos courtesy of WENN.

Star: Evan Spiegel wants Miranda Kerr to sign a Draconian prenup

This might be the feel-good story of the week. Not all golddiggers are equal! For every Jerry Hall – who managed to get her billionaire down the aisle in less than seven months – there is a Miranda Kerr, who toiling away for something like 10 months… and still no ring! I personally think this is Miranda’s second Golddigger Fail – she was trying to land James Packer back in the day, but it fell apart. And now Mariah Carey has landed Packer, and Miranda is trying to play it like she’ll just wait out her young billionaire boyfriend for however long it takes. Star Magazine says that Evan Spiegel is thinking marriage. But he’s also thinking “ironclad prenup.” After months of marriage talk, Miranda Kerr was expecting a ring from her boyfriend, Evan Spiegel, but the world’s youngest billionaire, 25, gave her an early draft of an ironclad prenup to read over instead. “Evan’s lawyers are advising that Miranda walk away with nothing if they get divorced,” dishes a source, noting that the Snapchat CEO is worth a staggering $2 billion compared with the model’s $38 million fortune. “Miranda started laughing when she heard what Evan was proposing. Then she realized that he was dead-serious. I can only imagine the look on her face!” And no matter how persuasive Miranda might be, her future fiancé isn’t budging. Explains the source: “The way Evan sees it, if they’re really going to spend the rest of their lives together, she’ll always be taken care of.” [From Star Magazine, print edition] Hey, at least she’s got him on the hook! He wants to marry her, he just wants to make sure that she doesn’t get her hands on all of that Snapchat money in a few years. Personally, I think that if Evan is making such a big deal about the prenup, she just needs to give in a little bit. I’m not saying she should sign something Draconian, but she needs to play up the idea of wanting to have his babies and doesn’t he want his children taken care of no matter what? Of course, maybe that wouldn’t work on a 25-year-old bro like Evan Spiegel. Which is why I do kind of wonder if this whole relationship hasn’t been a waste of Miranda’s time, if her ultimate goal was “marrying a billionaire and getting that cash money.” Photos courtesy of WENN, Fame/Flynet.

Kate Moss covers Vogue UK for the 37th time: enough already or fine?

It’s difficult to even describe, as an outsider to British culture and celebrity, what Kate Moss means to Great Britain. Like, she’s one of the most iconic British people in the world right now. She’s arguably the most famous British model of all time. She’s been well-known, beloved and gossiped about for more than two decades. There has barely been a month in 20 years when Kate isn’t somewhere, doing something or covering some magazine or walking some runway or part of some scandal or being discussed in some way. And throughout it all, she barely ever speaks in public. Finding a quote from Kate Moss is like finding the Holy Grail. So, she covers the May issue of Vogue UK. Guess how many times she’s covered British Vogue? 37 TIMES. Seriously. That’s practically twice a year for 20 years. Kate got the cover this time to… like, pay homage to fifty years of the Rolling Stones. That’s what the Union Jack-flag photo is all about, it’s an homage to the famous photos of Mick Jagger draped in a Union Jack. Still, why not put Mick Jagger on the cover? No, they had to use Moss. Again. For the 37th time. Meanwhile, did you hear that Kate is leaving her long-time modeling agency? She was discovered by Sarah Doukas of Storm Models when she was 14 and she’s been with Storm ever since. Kate is 42. So… nearly 30 years. And she’s done. Kate Moss has left Storm Models, the agency to which she has been signed since she was first discovered by its founder Sarah Doukas in JFK airport aged 14, the company confirmed to us this morning. “After a successful 28 year relationship, Kate is moving her business in house, and we will continue to maintain an active involvement in our on-going deals for her,” read a statement from the agency, which is responsible for the fashion careers of hundreds of major fashion models including Cindy Crawford, Jourdan Dunn, Liu Wen, Behati Prinsloo and, until recently, Cara Delevingne. The agency does, however, still have one Moss on its books in the form of Kate’s little sister, Lottie. Moss – who has established herself as a shrewd businesswoman in recent years with many collaborations and additional ventures to her modelling – will, moving forward, manage the majority of her modelling commitments herself, collaborating with the agency on an ad-hoc basis. The move, however, is said to be amicable. [From Vogue UK] If this was anyone else, I might think that the model was pissed that she wasn’t getting consistent work in her 40s. But this is Kate Moss and she still works all the time. I’ve heard that she still has plenty of offers for advertising and magazine work and she can pick and choose what she does. So what’s this about? Her divorce? A new phase in her career? I have no idea. Photos courtesy of Craig McDean/Vogue UK.

Emma Watson needs a better explanation for her Lancome skin-whitening ads

Several years back, Emma Watson got a lucrative beauty contract with Lancome. She became one of their “faces,” and she appeared in print ads for many different Lancome products. Her contract is done at this point, and I have no idea if Lancome simply didn’t renew it or if Emma just didn’t want to be in their advertising anymore. But this week, people started discussing a print ad from 2013. The print ad (seen above) features Emma as the “face” of a skin-whitening Lancome product being sold in Asia. As you can imagine, the reaction was really, really bad. People have been itching to write off Emma as just another non-intersectional white feminist, and this gave them a perfect opportunity. Beauty companies have long sold “skin lightening” products in countries with large (or nearly exclusive) populations of non-white women. Lancome is not the first nor will they be the last. Colorism, racism and the white-dominated hierarchy of beauty standards all come into play when we talk about skin lightening. We’ve talked about it before too, with Freida Pinto talking openly about her disgust for Indian society’s obsession with getting lighter skin. Anyway, the conversation centered around Emma and how she’s basically Peak White Feminism because she has profited from selling this bulls—t. So Emma’s publicist came out and this was literally the only statement made. “I cannot comment on my client’s previous contractual arrangements with Lancôme. However, my client no longer participates in advertising beauty products, which do not always reflect the diverse beauty of all women.” [Via People] If it sounds like Emma’s people are sort of throwing Lancome under the bus, that’s because I think they are. I also think there’s a very real possibility that Emma’s images were used by Lancome for skin-whitening products without her explicit or implicit endorsement. Oh, and a Lancome representative told People: “Blanc Expert was created by Lancôme 20 years ago. It helps brighten, even skin tone, and provides a healthy looking complexion. This kind of product, proposed by every brand, is an essential part of Asian women’s beauty routines.” [Via People] That pisses me off more than Emma’s rep’s statement. Skin-lightening products are not now and never have been an “essential” part of Asian women’s beauty routines and f—k you very much for saying so, Lancome. As for Emma and white feminism… I find Emma less harmful than someone like Lena Dunham, honestly. I think Emma is trying and she’s attempting to educate herself beyond the narrow feminist beliefs she held just a few years ago. Does she deserve some backlash? Sure. Does she owe her fans a better explanation of why her image ended up on skin-whitening ads? Yes. But Lancome is the villain here, make no mistake. Photos courtesy of Lancome, WENN.

The Guardian brilliantly trolled the British royal family for April Fool’s Day

The Guardian got me. The British paper pulled an April Fool’s Day prank and they got me. I really, really thought their “exclusive” royal report was for real, and I was even in the midst of writing it up before it occurred to me that this was an April Fool’s Day prank. You can read their hilariously trolling piece here. The gist? For more than a month, the British papers have been going HAM on the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. For the most part, the royal stories have been a sideshow to the larger political conversation in the UK, which is about “Brexit.” Brexit = the British exit from the European Union. The vote isn’t until June, and it’s one of the big political stories in Britain. So… the Guardian suggested that there was a conspiratorial connection between the political Brexit story and the gossip stories about “Work-Shy Will” and the “Duchess of Do-Little.” According to the Guardian’s prank, the royals believe there’s a connection. I should note that they’re actually basing this in reality: one of turning points for William was his vague speech back in February which many interpreted as “William speaks out against Brexit.” There were also stories last month in which real “sources” claimed the Queen is pro-Brexit. So, the Guardian slyly claims that the royal family thinks there’s a conspiracy afoot, and they plan on saying something about it. The royal family is seriously considering making a dramatic intervention in the referendum debate with an announcement that it supports Britain remaining inside the European Union. That the royals are prepared to risk provoking a potential constitutional crisis shows just how deep their anger is at parts of the British press and senior politicians. According to a senior source close to official figures, there was particular resentment at the Sun’s newspaper’s depiction of the Queen as a Brexit supporter. But the anger runs through the generations at Buckingham Palace: there was fury at the claims about “workshy” Prince William, a campaign mounted by two papers with an anti-EU stance, the Daily Mail and the Sun. And there was a feeling last week that rock bottom had been hit with a story in the Mail that Kate was now posher than the other royals. Another well-connected source explained that the royals now see a tightening conspiracy between the pro-exit papers, notably the Sun, Telegraph and Mail, and certain politicians. “The leader of Vote Leave is Michael Gove – that awful little leaker who put it about that the Queen wanted out. They can’t stand him. And as for Boris, the other main outer – he’s a cycling maniac from Islington. All he has done for the royal family is make it difficult to get around London in a decent-sized Daimler. And the third of the trio – Farage – what another awful little man.” Part of the reason for stepping into the debate in such an unprecedented way is huge disappointment in the prime minister, David Cameron. “The feeling is that we can’t leave it to him. Look what happened at the last referendum we had, on Scotland. We nearly lost Balmoral and the shoots. Nicola Sturgeon could be sat in that castle now – we know she had her eye on it – it was a damn close-run thing.” Royal circles found particularly offensive Cameron’s portrayal of the Queen as having “purred down the line” when he telephoned her to tell her Scotland had voted against independence. “The cheek of the man. There was real fury about that comment. And the irony of it – coming from a fat cat,” said a source. [From The Guardian] The whole piece is rich with irony, and they claim that the Palace is going to send Prince Philip out on his 95th birthday in June, possibly to tell Ant & Dec that Britain should stay in the EU. So… yeah, I’m dumb. I honestly thought this was real for a solid hour this morning. While my glee soured to disappointment with the realization that it was a prank, I still have to tip my hat to the Guardian. This is a brilliantly written piece of satire. Well done! Wendi Deng, 47, is apparently getting ‘serious’ with Pres. Vladimir Putin

When Rupert Murdoch married Wendi Deng in 1999, it was controversial. Murdoch was then a spry 68-year-old and Wendi was 31. At the time, it was his third marriage and her second. Deng has always been accused of trading in lovers and husbands for more money and power, and many side-eyed the fact that Deng had been the “homewrecker” two times in a row, breaking up her first husband’s marriage and then being the “other woman” in Murdoch’s second marriage. When the Deng-Murdoch marriage fell apart back in 2014, there were once again widespread rumors that Deng had already moved on to another more powerful lover, this time the very married Tony Blair. I don’t know what happened between Deng and Blair, but if it was ever something, it’s probably over now. Because Wendi Deng is reportedly dating… Vladimir Putin. How’s this for a new couple alert? The rumor circulating around the corridors of power — from Washington, D.C., to Europe and Asia — is that Vladimir Putin and Wendi Deng, Rupert Murdoch’s ex-wife, are dating. Reports of the pair have been floating around for years, ever since their respective divorces in 2014 and 2013. One insider close to the powerful leader tells Us Weekly the relationship is “serious.” The controversial Russian president, 63, was previously married to Lyudmila Putina for 30 years, with whom he shares daughters Maria, 30, and Yekaterina, 29. The Kremlin confirmed their divorce in April 2014. The politician rarely discusses his children, but during an annual news conference in December 2015, he boasted about his daughters to thousands of reporters, before shutting down more personal questions. “They studied only at Russian universities. I am proud of them. They continue to study and work. My daughters speak three European languages fluently. One of them can even speak one or two Oriental languages. They are making their first steps and are successful,” he told the crowd during the rare moment, before stating: “I never discuss questions related to my family. They are not involved in business or politics. They are not pushing for this.” Following Lyudmila and Putin’s split, the president was rumored to be dating Russian gymnast Alina Kabaeva. Putin was often featured in European gossip sites after Kabaeva stepped out in early 2015 looking “fuller,” igniting pregnancy rumors. Swiss newspaper Bild then reported that Putin had missed appearances because he had traveled to Switzerland to be by Kabaeva’s side, where she allegedly gave birth to their child at a Swiss hospital in March 2015. The Kremlin has repeatedly denied the rumors. Deng has yet to be spotted looking romantic with the Russian leader, but was seen boarding her pal Roman Abramovich’s yacht in St. Bart’s on Monday, March 28. Abramovich also happens to be friends with Putin. (According to the Daily Mail, the billionaire Chelsea Football Club owner reportedly gifted the president with a $35 million yacht in January.) [From Us Weekly] There’s no shadiness like Russian shadiness, my God. Putin received a “gift” of a $35 million yacht from Roman Abramovich? Yikes. And I still believe that Putin was dealing with that gymnast, Alina Kabaeva. In fact, that’s why the news surprised me so much – I was sure that if we ever heard anything else about Putin’s personal life, it was going to be that he married his young gymnast. As for the Deng-Putin power couple… I suspect they’ve both met their match. And it will either be perfect or it will be an utter disaster, nothing in between. I also suspect the timing of this confirmation is more about Wendi trying to stick it to her ex, Rupert Murdoch, for marrying Jerry Hall so quickly. Photos courtesy of WENN.
