Olivia Wilde: ‘Girls don’t get dressed up for guys; we get dressed up for girls’

2016 CFDA Fashion Awards

Olivia Wilde recently shared some of her beauty secrets with People magazine and I can only hope if I follow them I will look as radiant as she does. Olivia used the interview to do a little shilling for Revlon, for which she is a spokesperson, but she does offer some pretty helpful tips. She says that Jason “doesn’t love it” when she wears red lipstick to channel her inner Sophia Loren, but I’m sure he can look past that. It’s like a tiny scratch on a Bentley. Here are some highlights from the interview:

On men and makeup: “All men are terrified of lipstick. But girls don’t get dressed up for guys; we get dressed up for girls. So I wear whatever I think looks best.”

On her beauty inspiration: “I like to be bold on the red carpet, and the benefit of working with so many brilliant makeup artists is that I get to ask a lot of questions and say, ‘okay so when I go out next week to that birthday party I am going to try my own version of this with my own tools.’”

On her day-to-day look: “I don’t leave the house without a little foundation, concealer and mascara [on]. I think that for a lot of women it’s not about disguising yourself, it’s just about giving yourself a little bump in confidence.”

On the power of makeup: “The older I get, the more I get to know what works best for me. Makeup is not about changing who you are, it’s about understanding your face and highlighting your best features.”

[From People]

I love Olivia, but I have to disagree on a few things. I did an informal poll of my Facebook friends and random Tinder connections and not one man told me he was “terrified” of lipstick. Maybe Jason had some sort of traumatic experience with lipstick as a child. Also, the only woman I get dressed up for is myself. I have also been known to get dolled up to woo the opposite sex, so I think she may be barking up the wrong tree. She is right about using makeup to highlight your best features. She’s obviously a pro at that.

Sadly, it was announced on Wednesday that Olivia’s HBO series, Vinyl, was cancelled after only one season. The show, which followed the ups and (mostly) downs of a rock ’n’ roll record label in the 1970s was produced by Martin Scorcese and Mick Jagger, and I thought it was pretty good. And, of course, there’s all kinds of unresolved storylines, damn it. I hope Mick’s son, James, who played a punk singer, shows up somewhere soon. He’s a hottie. I hope Olivia’s merkin stylist can get another gig somewhere as well.

Olivia took the news in stride, using Twitter to thank fans for their support. She tweeted, “Thanks for all the kind words about Vinyl, my friends. We had a BLAST, and made something special. Party on.”

Don’t worry about Olivia though, she’s keeping busy. She recently made her directorial debut, helming the video for the Red Hot Chili Pepper’s new song Dark Necessities. Too bad she couldn’t talk Anthony Kiedis out of rocking his “Sonny Bono 2016” look. That boy needs a makeover.

Jessica Chastain in Elie Saab at the Spirit Awards: pretty or ill-fitting?

The 2016 Film Independent Spirit Awards in LA
Jessica Chastain presented Best Male Lead at last night’s Spirit Awards (that went to Abraham Attah of Beasts of No Nation!) and she’s actually the “honorary chair of film independent.” I googled it because I do research like that, and I still don’t know what it means exactly. She’s been nominated twice before but hasn’t won, so maybe that’s why they wanted to recognize her. Chastain hasn’t won an Oscar yet either, and I feel like that she’ll get one in the next few years. I really hope so.

You can see a complete list of winners here and YouTube has clips from the ceremony.

Anyway Chastain wore this purple lace Elie Saab gown which highlights the issue she’s had on so many red carpets past – her boobs aren’t supported. You may think I’m joking, but I’m really not. It’s an otherwise very pretty dress and I like the color. Plus her styling is gorgeous. I want to do my hair like that now.

The 2016 Film Independent Spirit Awards in LA

Marisa Tomei was in this twee white and floral embroidered Stella McCartney gown. It’s the Spirit Awards and this could have been a great dress if it was tailored for her properly but it just hangs there like a sack. I do like the idea of the dress though.

Juno Temple (Far from the Madding Crowd, Black Mass) was in Valentino which is SO overworked for the Spirit Awards. Tone it down a notch lady. Something nice: her hair is awesome and her makeup is super cute. I had hair like this in the 90s and I like that it’s making a comeback. Also, the birds on the bodice are cool. With a shorter, plainer skirt this might have worked. This did not need the blue lace on the skirt or down the sleeves.

Nikki Reed was in an Etro gown which I can’t decide if I like. The front looks like a bib or apron. I really like the contemporary detailing around the bust but it looks weird paired with that kind of 70s baroque print. It’s like two different personalities crammed together in one dress. Her styling is gorgeous though.

Lauren Cohan is giving me #abgoals in this Alice & Olivia white wrap crop top paired with high waisted blush colored Eloise pants. I’m just not feeling this look, it’s another case of two things which do not go together. She brightens it up with her expression though. Just try to imagine Rooney Mara in this. This makes me bummed that I have to wait to watch Walking Dead until after we’re done with Oscar coverage Monday. There are worse things than having to wait an extra day to watch a show you get to talk about for your job.

Gigi Hadid in gold Michael Kors at the CFDAs: 1970s glam or dated fug?

FFN_GG_CFDA_Awards_060115_51761194

The CFDA Awards were held last night. It’s sort of like the Met Gala only it’s a pretty traditional red carpet and it really is about the designers and their work and their muses. So, obviously, a lot of fashion girls came out to celebrate their favorite designers. I’m breaking these photos up into two posts! First, let’s start with Gigi Hadid, who got a lot of attention for being one of the few women in the world with the ability to rock the hell out of a jumpsuit/onesie. This is by Michael Kors, who has been doing sort of an ode of 1970s Halston lately. It works here. It works really well. How in the world is Leonardo DiCaprio not all over Gigi?

FFN_GG_CFDA_Awards_060115_51761192

Victoria Beckham in her own label – Posh is sort of like Liz Hurley to me at this point, like I don’t even pay attention to what she’s wearing because it all looks the same. That being said, this dress is decent.

FFN_GG_CFDA_Awards_060115_51761177

Ashley Judd in Badgley Mischka. This seems like a very “beauty queen” look for this event.

FFN_GG_CFDA_Awards_060115_51761260

Karlie Kloss in Diane Von Furstenberg polka dots. She wore flats! I’m not big into polka dots but this is okay. My only problem is that the plunging neckline doesn’t suit her.

FFN_GG_CFDA_Awards_060115_51761263

Jemima Kirke was one of my worst-dressed! She wore this completely unflattering Rosie Assoulin two-piece gown. Bad, bad, bad. The lipstick shade is terrible too.

FFN_GG_CFDA_Awards_060115_51761269

Vanessa Hudgens wore a boring Sachin & Babi NOIR mullet dress.

FFN_GG_CFDA_Awards_060115_51761292

Taraji P. Henson in custom Vera Wang. This is a great look! Great color for her and a very flattering design.

FFN_GG_CFDA_Awards_060115_51761294

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. OMG. They look like they’re in their 60s. They also look like they’re trying to ape Cara Delevingne’s Angry Baby eyebrows.

Shia LaBeouf blames his arrest on ‘performance art’: funny or offensive?

Shia LaBeouf

This is a photo of Shia from last week. He arrived to Jimmy Kimmel’s show in shiny, pink spandex pants. The pants were officially a gift from Ellen DeGeneres (as part of pink month), but we know Shia loves his neon workout ensembles. I have been slacking on Shia coverage, so this will be a lengthy roundup.

Shia embarked upon a grand redemption tour for Fury. He’s behaved badly for several years, but he always catches a break and lands prestigious roles. Brad Pitt talked up Shia’s skills to GQ by saying, “He’s full-on commitment, man.” But Shia is always one step away from popping off. He’s holding it together at the moment, but you never know when he’ll start punching holes in doors again. Oh, and speaking of that bitchfight that made Alec Baldwin look sane: Shia covers the new issue of Interview magazine. He says (via Page Six) that everything — including the Alec incident and the Cabaret meltdown — was a result of method acting:

Hollywood bad boy Shia LaBeouf blames method acting for the wacky antics that got him fired from a Broadway play and tossed in the slammer.

The drama-prone actor was simply role-playing when he clashed with Alec Baldwin on the set of Orphans and also when he smacked actor Alan Cumming’s butt at a performance of Cabaret, he claimed in Interview Magazine’s November issue.

“Alec and I butted heads hard. I was sleeping in the park … At the time, I was out of my mind,” he revealed about preparing for the brutal, street-smart character, Treat.

“My whole goal was to intimidate the f— out of Baldwin. That was the role. And it wasn’t going to be fake. I wanted him to be scared … So I went about doing that for three weeks of rehearsal,” he said.

The 28-year-old actor was arrested in June after drunkenly slapping Cumming and later spitting at a cop.

“I was reading about performance art of the ’60s and ’70s and so I thought … we’re all involved here. It’s not just your stage. We’re all in here and we’re all part of this,” he said. “I was wrong.”

[From Page Six]

According to this logic, method acting is to blame for everything. For slashing one’s own face on set, for repeated plagiarism, and for chasing homeless men. Sigh. I should have sympathy for Shia. He is clearly very ill, but he’s making a mockery out of mental illness. Daniel Day Lewis is one of the most notorious method actors, and he’s admitted that he’s tough to live with during filming. But DDL’s not spitting on cops and urinating in public, you now? It’s also hard to buy that Shia is serious abot his recovery when there’s nothing anonymous about his AA visits. He prominently displays the Blue Book for the paps.

Shia’s story also keeps changing. He’s appeared on two recent talk shows to discuss his arrest. Shia told Ellen the Broadway meltdown was “an existential crisis.” He said, “jail was quite scary. I was there for, it felt like forever, I think 24 hours, 25 hours.” Shia laughed the whole time he talked about jail. He thinks this is funny. He claims to be keeping himself together with daily 12-mile runs. He’s full of it. Shia is not running that much. This is a guy who sustained stress fractures after jumping rope. No way is he running 12 miles a day and staying uninjured.

Shia also chuckled his way through his Kimmel interview. He gave a “humorous” account of “drinking a lot of whiskey” for “the World Cup,” which caused him to buy ladies drunks after they turned down his offer. Then he talked about sexually assaulting Alan Cumming: “I slap and grabbed him. Like, I grabbed a whole cheek because I wanted the party right here in my pants.” Everybody laughs. Kimmel. The audience. One person who didn’t think it was funny: Alan Cumming. Alan recently told the NYT that Shia is “a dangerous menace. I guess similar to dealing with my [abusive] father.” But you know, Shia tells a cool story, bro.

Here are clips of Shia’s Kimmel and Ellen appearances.

Vintage Scandal: Marianne Faithfull’s boyfriend probably killed Jim Morrison

wenn1631143

IT WAS MICK JAGGER THE WHOLE TIME.

No, not really. Mick Jagger was only Marianne Faithfull’s first major boyfriend, back in the 1960s. After they broke up, she dated other people (obviously), and one of the boyfriends was some shady heroin dealer named Jean de Breteuil. Apparently, Jean dealt heroin to all of the rock stars in Europe those days (the late ‘60s and early ‘70s). And Jean probably dealt to Jim Morrison. So… did Jean de Breteuil sell Jim Morrison the fatal dose, the dose that Jim overdosed on in 1971? Marianne Faithfull thinks so. Vintage rock n’ roll scandal!

Jim Morrison’s lonely death in a Paris bathtub in 1971 is one of rock’s greatest obsessed-over mysteries. Multiple conspiracy theories abound, mostly surrounding the actual location of The Doors frontman’s fatal overdose, but someone close to the source – as it were – has emerged with new details about the Lizard King’s demise.

Singer/songwriter and famous ex of Mick Jagger, Marianne Faithfull, recently gave an interview to Mojo in which she confessed to apparent knowledge of the circumstances surrounding Morrison’s death.

Faithfull said that she was dating a heroin dealer named Jean de Breteuil at the time, and told the magazine, “I could intuitively feel trouble,” when de Breteuil told her he was going to visit Morrison. “I thought, I’ll take a few Tuinal [barbiturates] and I won’t be there.”

“And [de Breteuil] went to see Jim Morrison and killed him,” Faithfull continued. “I mean, I’m sure it was an accident. Poor bastard. The smack was too strong. Yeah, and he died. I didn’t know anything about this. Anyway, everybody connected to the death of this poor guy is dead now, except me.”

Faithfull has a new record, Give My Love to London, coming out in September. The record features collaborations with Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters, Nick Cave and Steve Earle, among others. A book of photos from her life, Marianne Faithfull: A Life on Record, will follow in October.

[From People]

I was never one of those Doors-obsessed people or Jim Morrison-obsessives, but from what I remember of Morrison’s life, he over-consumed everything. He was a terrible alcohol and drug abuser (and he loved food too). I’ve always believed that Morrison mostly drank himself to an early death, but I’m not sure that’s ever been verified by physical evidence. If he was a heroin user (which probably isn’t a big IF), surely they found track marks? According to The Daily Mail, Jean died a few months later in 1971, also of a drug overdose.

I know it’s gruesome to admit this, but I love these kinds of vintage scandal stories, like “Oh, Marianne Faithfull’s drug dealer boyfriend gave this famous rock star a fatal dose of smack in 1971!” It’s amazing how these people were interconnected back then.
