Nikki Reed’s greatest joy: ‘watching my daughter run through the dirt’ barefoot

Nikki Reed has a new interview with People Magazine talking about her life on a farm somewhere in rural California, it’s unclear exactly where. Nikki talks mostly about being in nature and her daughter with Ian Somerhalder, Bodhi, four, experiencing that lifestyle. Nikki and Ian have been married since April, 2015 and moved to the country sometime in late 2019 I’m assuming, given that they listed their house in Venice Beach in October, 2019. I’m getting weird vibes from this People story, mainly because Nikki talks about her decision to move as a personal one and doesn’t mention Ian much. That could just be what People excerpted and it might not mean much. Here’s some of that interview:

“[Having a child] was a turning point for me,” she says. “I made a conscious choice to give my child the most normal life possible.”

That meant moving to a farm “very far outside the city” where they raise goats, cows, dogs and horses, and grow lavender and rosemary alongside cucumbers and peppers.

“It felt like a relief, moving out of the city,” Reed says. “I promise that if anybody wants a feeling of ease, of peace, of calm, the answer is nature.”

At their farm, the now-4-year-old Bodhi is “learning to grow things, getting your hands dirty in the soil,” Reed says.

“My greatest joy is watching my daughter run through the dirt with her shoes off,” she says.

And it makes a huge impact on Reed’s mental health, who now spends her days cuddling her cows, riding horses and growing tomatoes in the yard.

“Nature is the best form of therapy,” she says. “And it’s instant — you don’t have to spend six months in nature before you feel it. Go on a hike and release endorphins. Look at a tree instead of the blue light on your phone. All of our souls need a dose of that kind of medicine.”

Now busy with life on the farm, Reed has taken a step back from her acting career, but has started a nature-inspired jewelry company, BaYou with Love, and is designing a line of shoes for vegan sneaker company Løci.

“It was a very scary pivot for me to leave the only career I had ever known, that I had worked in since I was 13, to try something new,” she says. “But I learned a lot about what’s important to me. A lot of things that came with a Hollywood lifestyle, there isn’t synergy with the priorities I now have in my life and with the people I want to surround myself with.”

[From People]

You see what I’m saying about her not mentioning Ian at all? At the end she’s quoted as saying “Peace, calm, plants, animals — this is what keeps us healthy” but it’s like the royal “us” and doesn’t necessarily mean her family. (Also I hope she includes doctors and vaccinations in there, but I doubt it.) I checked Nikki and Ian’s Instagrams and Nikki posted a magazine cover photo she took of Ian in March and she wished him happy birthday in December. Ian’s last post for her was in October of last year. I’m getting weird vibes like I said.

Whatever is going on with Nikki and Ian, their life on the farm looks idyllic. I agree that it’s healing to get out in nature and now that I love hiking I wonder why it took so long for me to give it a chance. I don’t agree that it’s the best form of therapy though, it’s just *a* form of therapy. The best forms of therapy are cognitive behavioral or rational emotive, but those are expensive.

Nikki Reed is trying to only produce one garbage bag of trash a year

avalon-0540774726

Nikki Reed is popping up more in the news lately. I can’t quite figure out why, though. She’s obviously promoting some stuff but going off her Instagram and most of her interviews, she’s always promoting stuff. Some of these little fluff pieces and pocket interviews read like reminders that she’s still around. They all note every film and project Nikki’s ever done before getting to anything relevant. This Us interview at least asked Nikki to list 25 things about her we may not know. Some of them are predictable, like that she prefers books to movies and that she’s happiest in nature. But some were surprising, like her grandmother was a jewelry designer like Nikki, and that Nikki’s ultimate goal is to only produce one bag of garbage a year.

1. My first job was cutting hair and doing makeup when I was 12 years old.

2. I write kids songs for my daughter and sing them every night at bedtime.

3. I’m most comfortable living in small spaces.

4. I’m happiest in nature.

5. In my free time, I research medicine.

6. If I could reinvent myself again, I would be a lawyer or a doctor.

7. I haven’t had a car for two years.

8. I prefer books [over] movies.

9. I have a huge passion for sustainability and use the plant-based pest repellent Wondercide on some of my (many!) animals.

10. My goal is to produce only one bag of trash per year.

11. Alcohol gives me huge headaches.

12. I cut my own hair. I am the hairdresser of the household.

13. I started riding horses when I was just 2 years old.

14. I have 12 animals, including my chickens, who are allowed to come in the house.

15. I volunteered as a tutor all through elementary school for a fellow student who had Down syndrome.

16. To this day, I still take courses online because I’m a lifelong student. I’m constantly learning and exploring my areas of passion.

17. I moved to Greece when I was 21 in between filming the Twilight movies and I studied Greek.

18. The first play I did was The Tortoise and the Hare and I played the tortoise. My favorite line was: “Slow and steady wins the race.” I still reference that to this day.

19. I do acroyoga. My brother is my partner.

20. I bake bread once a week.

21. I come from a family of artists. My great grandmother was a jewelry designer.

22. I have nine tattoos.

23. I made beaded bracelets in elementary school that I sold for $3 each for lunch money.

24. I prefer wearing no nail polish.

25. I took college math when I was in 7th grade.

[From Us]

It’s an admirable goal. We should all try to cut down on our trash output. I know Nikki promotes sustainability in many of her posts and the products she supports, but I’m curious how close she is to a single bag. Like, I, too, would love to only produce one bag of trash a year. But I am so far from that goal, I couldn’t even think it possible. I’d love to hear how many bags she’s producing now to think that number is a goal she even could set. And I assume she means her home garbage. I assume her Bayou with Love jewelry line produces more than one bag a year. Or do they not have to count their packaging and shipping supplies once they leave their warehouse?

Some of Nikki’s facts about herself are super impressive. I wasn’t even doing college math in college so kudos for tackling it in seventh grade. And this is just a quibble but remember when Nikki said she didn’t hire professional help to care for her daughter? She also said in that interview that she “load(s) up the recycling into the back of the car and we’re going to drive it to the recycling center” every other day. Yet here, Nikki said she hasn’t had a car in two years. So is she splitting hairs with her words? Is it her assistant’s car? Her husband’s? Obviously, she has access to a car on a daily basis. It’s things like that that make me reread some of her other answers and wonder how much weight I should give them.

Nikki Reed: I work full time, but I don’t have any professional childcare

Nikki_Reed_hammock

Nikki Reed has almost completely dropped out of the acting spotlight to run her farm with husband Ian Somerhalder. In addition to that, she runs her own jewelry line, Bayou with Love. Her stuff is cute. Recently, she partnered with Wondercide who makes essential oil-based pest control products. She’s also a hands-on mom to her four-year-old daughter, Bodhi, and said she enlists no professional childcare at all. Nikki said there’s nothing wrong with having help, she just doesn’t want any. Fortunately, she also said her intuition has never led her astray, so obviously she’s made the right decision.

On being environmental friendly: It’s just a part of our everyday life. She sees that Mommy makes the extra effort… For example, I’m in a place right now where they don’t pick up your recycling. So most people would just combine trash and recycling and say, “I don’t care.” But my daughter knows that every other day Mommy’s gonna load up the recycling into the back of the car and we’re going to drive it to the recycling center because there’s no way I’m not going to do that stuff… I buy water in bulk, in glass, so that’s always a conversation; she knows that we don’t drink out of plastic. She knows that when we go anywhere in the car or travel or do anything, I keep all of our reusable silverware in the center console of the car. If we ever pick up take-out food, she knows that Mommy’s going to bring my own Tupperware to pick it up.

On motherly intuition: I’ve learned a lot about intuition for sure. I’ve always had really solid intuition, but I’ve learned now, since becoming a mom, that I don’t question it at all; I don’t even give it one second of overthinking. If I know something in my gut, I know it and I go with it… You just know in your gut what the right move is for your child, you know?

On finding a life balance: And so I learned to slow down in some ways. Yes, I’m still operating my company and I’m involved in every aspect of the business, from operations to the creative, to web copy, to design photography, all of it. So I’m very involved in my company, and that is totally consuming at times. And then I also sit on the board of a couple of other companies as the strategic marketing adviser and I have a couple of other jobs too. So there’s a lot happening in my world, but … the greatest gift is that I’ve learned that it’s OK to say no to people around me, but also to myself.

On not employing any help: I’m a very hands-on parent. I work full-time, but I also don’t have any professional childcare — not that there’s anything wrong with that at all; I think it’s wonderful if that’s what suits your family. But I really want to be as present as possible with my daughter. I like being there for every bath time and every meal time, so I kind of work around that. I set my alarm and I work really early, from 5 in the morning until 8:30, when she’s up, and then I take a break for her breakfast, and then I go back to work in the in-between times. She has been in preschool and stuff like that, so those are my moments of break and work. And then I work late into the evenings.

[From Yahoo!]

How? How does a person run every aspect of their own company, sit on the board of other companies, and not employ any help with their child? I’m trying to remember preschool hours, do they have full day options? I guess if Nikki’s daughter is out of the house from 9-5 she could run her business during that time. Of course, Nikki specifies she doesn’t have professional childcare, not that she doesn’t employ assistants and housekeepers. If someone else is helping tend to the house and do the shopping and run errands, that would make it doable. I mean, good for her, it just sounds exhausting. But she’s right, she needs to do what she thinks is best. And if sacrificing sleep is what she’s willing to do to forego childcare, then she’s found her system. Can we assume Ian is helping? At one point, Nikki referred to Bodhi as her “first” child. So I guess they’re still planning on more. One thing is clear, Nikki adores being Bodhi’s mom so thank goodness she’s been able to arrange her world around that.

I’m also jealous of her intuition. I don’t know if there was ever a time I didn’t question something I’d decided or done. That must be a wonderful feeling to be so sure of your choices.

This is less important, but I was really curious about Nikki’s Tupperware comments. Will take-out places let you bring your own? It seems like there would be some legalities involved. Maybe it’s places they know the owners or something, farmers tend to be a tight knit community.

Jessica Chastain in Elie Saab at the Spirit Awards: pretty or ill-fitting?

The 2016 Film Independent Spirit Awards in LA
Jessica Chastain presented Best Male Lead at last night’s Spirit Awards (that went to Abraham Attah of Beasts of No Nation!) and she’s actually the “honorary chair of film independent.” I googled it because I do research like that, and I still don’t know what it means exactly. She’s been nominated twice before but hasn’t won, so maybe that’s why they wanted to recognize her. Chastain hasn’t won an Oscar yet either, and I feel like that she’ll get one in the next few years. I really hope so.

You can see a complete list of winners here and YouTube has clips from the ceremony.

Anyway Chastain wore this purple lace Elie Saab gown which highlights the issue she’s had on so many red carpets past – her boobs aren’t supported. You may think I’m joking, but I’m really not. It’s an otherwise very pretty dress and I like the color. Plus her styling is gorgeous. I want to do my hair like that now.

The 2016 Film Independent Spirit Awards in LA

Marisa Tomei was in this twee white and floral embroidered Stella McCartney gown. It’s the Spirit Awards and this could have been a great dress if it was tailored for her properly but it just hangs there like a sack. I do like the idea of the dress though.

Juno Temple (Far from the Madding Crowd, Black Mass) was in Valentino which is SO overworked for the Spirit Awards. Tone it down a notch lady. Something nice: her hair is awesome and her makeup is super cute. I had hair like this in the 90s and I like that it’s making a comeback. Also, the birds on the bodice are cool. With a shorter, plainer skirt this might have worked. This did not need the blue lace on the skirt or down the sleeves.

Nikki Reed was in an Etro gown which I can’t decide if I like. The front looks like a bib or apron. I really like the contemporary detailing around the bust but it looks weird paired with that kind of 70s baroque print. It’s like two different personalities crammed together in one dress. Her styling is gorgeous though.

Lauren Cohan is giving me #abgoals in this Alice & Olivia white wrap crop top paired with high waisted blush colored Eloise pants. I’m just not feeling this look, it’s another case of two things which do not go together. She brightens it up with her expression though. Just try to imagine Rooney Mara in this. This makes me bummed that I have to wait to watch Walking Dead until after we’re done with Oscar coverage Monday. There are worse things than having to wait an extra day to watch a show you get to talk about for your job.

Rachel Weisz, US citizen, supports Bernie Sanders & wants higher taxes

weisz more

I love Rachel Weisz. I know some of you think she’s meh, but I really enjoy her. She’s sassy, funny and interesting, and she’s getting Daniel Craig’s business on the reg. What’s not to love? Rachel covers the new issue of More Magazine and the Englishwoman ends up chatting about American politics. Um, is she an American citizen now? Oooh, I just looked it up – SHE IS!! She talked about it back in 2012, saying: “I did it because I thought I would go back to England for a while and lose my green card. I’m not going back now but being a citizen means I can vote here which is exciting, not just being an outsider. When I come back into the country now and they stamp my passport they say ‘Welcome home, Ma’am.’ I think that’s a lovely formality. No one in England would say that, would they?” That answer is so much better than Emily Blunt’s shenanigans.

Anyway, I did know that Rachel and Daniel have a place in New York (I think they have a Manhattan apartment as well as a country home), which means Rachel is a New York voter. And she’s going to vote for Bernie Sanders! Well, well. Some highlights from More:

On how roles for women in Hollywood differ from roles for men: “Men get the more complex roles. Things have become too glossy for women. We have to be ‘likable,’ which is not very likable at all. It’s hard to like someone who’s just sweet. You want a real person, one who irritates you and mystifies you and frustrates you and makes you cry. You want everything from a character. Not to just stand there and look nice. Likability is code for ‘Shut up and look good.’”

Keeping her marriage private: “He’s just too famous. It would be a betrayal. You have to protect your marriage. When you’re young, you tell your girlfriends everything. One of the great pleasures of not being an adolescent is that you don’t have to share everything. When you’re married, that door closes. The audience goes, and you’re in your own life.”

On her support for Bernie Sanders: “As far as I can tell, Sanders is the only person talking about the poverty divide. And saying mums should have 12 weeks’ maternity leave to bond with their children. I come from Europe—I believe we should pay more taxes and have the state look after those who fall through the net. Isn’t that what Jesus would do?”

On how she feels about this time in her life: “Well, everybody’s aging, and we’re all going to die. Getting older, there’s a reality about mortality, but it’s hard to be young, too. It’s hard to not know who you are. My twenties were painful at times. Now I have wisdom and experience—I know what interests me in a way I didn’t before. I’m much more focused on what matters to me. I waste less time. There’s a huge relief in that.”

On her advice for aging gracefully: “I once did an interview with a friend, and she said, ‘Don’t you think Botox should be banned, like steroids for athletes?’ I said, ‘Yeah, yeah!’ And that became this quote of mine, when in fact I think people should do whatever they like, whatever gets them through the day.”

Kate Hudson and Derek Hough ‘were totally kissing’ at a restaurant

Earlier this week we heard that Kate Hudson and her fiance, Muse frontman Matt Bellamy, were off-again and that they “have been separated for some time now” according to Kate’s rep. This was despite the fact that Kate was seen attending an event with Matt less than three weeks ago. Judging solely from photos, if their relationship was off at that point, Matt didn’t seem to know about it. That’s pure assumption of course, but it’s the impression I guess. At that same event was Dancing With The Stars professional Derek Hough, who was spotted out on a date with Kate over the weekend. US Weekly reported that the two are an item, and now they’re claiming that Kate and Derek were seen kissing on that date.

The longtime (dance-off!) friends quickly got intimate — and didn’t care who was looking — after they arrived at L.A.’s restaurant the Nice Guy at 11 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 5.

They “were totally kissing,” an insider tells Us of Hudson, 35, and the Dancing With the Stars pro, 29. “So scandalous!”

Shocking perhaps, but Hudson and Bellamy, who share 3-year-old son Bingham, had already broken up by then. “Kate and Matt have been separated for some time now,” a rep for Bellamy, 36, told Us on Tuesday, Dec. 9. “Despite this, they remain very close friends and committed co-parents.”

Hudson appears to share the same sentiment. “She says that Matt’s a really great guy, but they’re no longer together,” a pal tells Us. The split “wasn’t anything big and emotional.”

[From US Magazine]

Of course this whole story could be an elaborate ruse. Lainey Gossip reports that Kate and Derek’s sister, Julianne Hough, are close friends and that the two share a publicist. *cough* We’ve heard of several of Derek’s hookups with Julianne’s friends, like Nikki Reed and Nina Dobrev. Then again, both of those women got with Hough right after their high profile relationships ended. The dude has a definite pattern.

Charlize Theron on Sean Penn: ‘I Really Didn’t See It Coming’

Charlize Theron Vogue cover

Charlize Theron covers the June issue of Vogue, where she talks about dating Sean Penn after being friends with him for nearly two decades.

Jimmy Kimmel’s Mean Tweets series will never get old. Up this time are Julia Roberts, Emma Stone, Matthew McConaughey and more – though Gary Oldman‘s reaction is the best.

-Also funny from last night: Hugh Jackman and Jimmy Fallon competed in a cooler scooter race.

Skylar Astin has been confirmed for Pitch Perfect 2. Wait, was that ever in doubt? Because there’s no aca-awseomeness without Jesse!

Emma Thompson talks about cracking penis jokes, hating Twitter and finding rich people’s conversations “exhausting” in a new interview with Vanity Fair. There is no end to my love for her.

-Oh. My. God. There is a very dubious (but very awesome) report about Chris Martin taking his kids to a fast food restaurant. I so want this to be true.

Snooki says she “did every interview drunk” in her Jersey Shore days. How is that different from now?

Will and Jada Pinkett Smith might be under investigation by Child Protective Services for that photo of Willow in bed with a grown ass man. I wonder if she soon be living with her auntie and uncle in Bel Air?

-Jimmy Fallon has a Stanley Cup bet going with the Montreal Canadiens, and it’s pretty great.

Charlie Sheen got all pissy and wrote a Twitter rant against Rihanna because she declined to meet him when they both ended up at the same restaurant recently. Smart girl, that one.

Rihanna and Beyoncé reportedly get $100,000 for attending fashion shows. Worth every penny.

Jennifer Lawrence made a ill-conceived rape joke and now everyone’s freaking.

Jen’s having a rough week: she also told that story on Seth Meyers last night about how she threw up at an Oscars after-party and Miley Cyrus told her to “get it together” – and then Miley said she was lying.

-Everyone in the Firefly cast is still awesome, just in case you were worried.

-Did anyone else cringe a lot while watching Brad Pitt dance at the Bruno Mars concert? I mean, it wasn’t Tom Cruise-levels of horrifying, but it was still kinda wince-y. When Michael Strahan was covering it on this morning’s GMA, he was all “what’s Brad doing with his hands? We need to work on that.”

Lupita Nyong’o appeared on Mexico’s version of Sesame Street. It’s in Spanish, but I can only assume she’s being adorable.

Kirsten Dunst and Isla Fisher are buddies. Who knew?

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler roasted Don Rickles and it was glorious.

-Holy mother, the Lizzie Bennet Diaries just posted a new video even though the series ended a year ago. And it’s called “Bonus 1″. Does that mean Bonus 2, 3, 4, and 5 are coming?! This is giving me all the squees.

Jude Law’s deep v is beyond disturbing.

Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy were banned from using golf carts on the X-Men set because they kept getting into bloody accidents — but that didn’t stop them from roping Hugh Jackman and Nicholas Hoult into their shenanigans.

Nikki Reed has filed for divorce from Paul McDonald two months after they announced their split.

Jason Segel wrote a children’s book. Between this and his puppet obsession, he really is just an overgrown kid, huh?

-A burglar scaled the walls of George Clooney’s Lake Como villa and stole some wine from his cellar. Seems about right.

Justin Bieber was spotted getting close with supermodels Barbara Palvin and Adriana Lima at Cannes because there is no justice in this world.

-I understand why AMC decided to break Mad Men season seven into two halves, but I still hate it.

-Sad: The Shield’s Michael Jace has been formally charged with murdering his wife.

-Who knew that Ron Weasley could sing?

-People were tweeting from the Blended premiere last night, saying that Andy Dick was stuck behind barricade yelling “get me the f in bro” to Adam Sandler.

-The Kimye wedding is this weekend, and her clan has already invaded Paris. Oh, and Kim has Jennifer Aniston’s hairstylist on call for the entire weekend.

-Meanwhile, Beyonce still hasn’t confirmed her attendance. heheheh

-I don’t watch American Idol but I tuned in for a bit of last night’s finale and was amazed how much I liked Jennifer Lopez (I think her interactions with Keith and Harry humanize her). The judges all performed together – as did Ryan Seacrest tried to sing, too.

-The trailer for the Roger Ebert documentary Life Itself looks beautiful.

Yasiin Bey, aka Mos Def, canceled his US tour amid rumours that he was forbidden from entering the country.

-Why has everyone started posting bath selfies? From Miley Cyrus to Kelly Rutherford, I clearly have to start weeding out my following list on Instagram.

-If you don’t watch The Americans, you should really catch up over the summer. Last night’s finale was devastatingly good.

-The first teaser for season two of Masters of Sex is all about the love triangle.

-Here’s Kristen Stewart and Juliette Binoche in the trailer for Clouds of Sils Maria, which will debut at Cannes.

-Canadian wunderkind Xavier Dolan’s Mommy is killing it in Cannes. Critics are raving about it and it might even win the Palme d’Or.

-I love and adore Emma Stone and Colin Firth, but watching them get romantic in Woody Allen’s Magic in the Moonlight? I’m just not sure I can get on board with this.
