Denmark’s Crown Princess Mary covers Vogue Australia: stunning or blah?

I’ll admit it: I’ve never paid much attention to Denmark’s Crown Princess Mary. There are dedicated royal-watchers who enjoy all of the royal houses, but I generally limit myself to the Windsors, Bernadottes and Grimaldis. Crown Princess Mary is the Australian woman who married Crown Prince Frederick in 2004, after a three-year courtship and one-year-long engagement. They met in a pub in Sydney, Australia in 2000 and love blossomed. Mary is actually accomplished, and she worked at real jobs before and during their courtship. She’s often compared to the Duchess of Cambridge because of the whole “commoner marrying a prince” thing, but in side-by-side comparisons, Mary does seem like a better/cooler/more accomplished person. Anyway, Mary and Frederick cover the August issue of Vogue Australia. Mary is sort of a hero (the Duchess Kate of Australia, if you will) in her home country, so it makes sense that they would do an exclusive photoshoot for Australian Vogue. The photoshoot was done by Mario Testino, and Mary and Frederick even included their four kids in one of the photos. They are parents to Prince Christian, Princess Isabella, and twins Vincent and Josephine. Here are some highlights from Mary’s interview: Whether she considers herself a role model: “I always find it difficult to speak of myself as a role model, you know, because I think it is other people and their impression of you that makes a role model. It’s not something I consciously think about but at the same time I am very aware of my role and my responsibility.” Her work with the conditions within the fashion industry: “It will take time to create real and sustainable change. If we are talking about the textile and fashion industry, it is one of the most female-dominated industries in the world and yet many of these working women are voiceless. I do use the platform I have built up over the years as a vocal and passionate voice for the empowerment of women and girls and the protection and respect of their human rights to bring attention to this.” Her foundation deals with issues of domestic violence, bullying and loneliness: “One thing I have always found difficult from as early as I can remember is seeing people who appear to be alone. It has always affected me deeply and I can’t explain why. To see people standing on the outside looking in, who can’t understand why they aren’t part of a community or group. We all have this innate fear of not belonging… We all have a right to belong. The abused woman, the bullied child, and the lonely adolescent feel very, very lonely in the world with their problems and will often never share them.” [From The Daily Mail] I think it’s difficult to make “loneliness” a cause, specifically a royal cause. Lots of people are alone, and lots of people are lonely, but she’s conflating those two things and making it seem like everyone who is alone is pitiable and sad. While “loneliness” is good subject to raise and de-stigmatize, what work is there to be done realistically? As for the rest of it, she sounds absolutely fine. It would be fascinating to see the Duchess of Cambridge do an interview like this at one point, but it won’t happen. Photos courtesy of Mario Testino for Vogue Australia.

Zachary Quinto hopes George Takei changes his mind about Sulu being gay

Embed from Getty Images Australian outlet Pedestrian.TV asked Star Trek: Beyond star and openly gay actor Zachary Quinto (Spock) to respond to George Takei’s negative take on the fact that the character he played in the original TV series, Sulu, was going to be made gay in the upcoming prequel. As you may recall, Takei said that while he was “delighted that there’s a gay character” that he found it to be a “twisting of [creator] Gene [Rodenberry’s] creation, to which he put in so much thought.” and that he thought it was “really unfortunate.” Takei had explained to both John Cho, who plays him in the reboot, and director Justin Lin why he didn’t want Sulu to be gay and how it was unrealistic for the character that he be closeted throughout his life essentially. They went ahead with that direction for the character despite Takei’s objections. So Quinto has a response for Takei and while the headlines make it seem like he’s going hard against Takei’s statement, in the actual video he’s more measured and makes it about the broader point on inclusion. As a member of the LGBT community myself I was disappointed by the fact that George was disappointed. I think any member of the LGBT community that takes issue with the normalized and positive portrayal of members of our community in Hollywood and in mainstream blockbuster cinema… I get it that he has his own personal journey and his own personal relationship with this character but, you know, as we’ve established in the first Star Trek Film in 2009 we’ve created an alternate universe and my hope is that eventually George can be strengthened by the enormously positive response especially from young people who are heartened by and inspired by this really tasteful and beautiful portrayal of something that I think is gaining acceptance and inclusion in our societies across the world and should be. [From Video on Facebook] So Quinto kind of gets why Takei would object to his character having an entirely different backstory but doesn’t think it matters in the long run, which kind of goes to show how Takei got ignored in the first place. Of course it’s nice to have a gay character in Star Trek but I think they should have listened to Takei and respected his wishes instead of assuming they were doing homage to him. Takei made it clear ahead of time that wasn’t the case and it’s like they expected him to come around, that’s basically what Quino is saying. Also, I tried to go to George Takei’s twitter account to see if he’s responded to Quinto and I just got lost in all the excellent links he shares. (I searched on “Zachary” and “Quinto” on his account and there’s nothing recent.) While searching on Twitter I found that Simon Pegg issued a lengthy response to Takei as well. Pegg defended their decision to make Sulu gay and wrote that they never suggest in the film that Sulu was ever closeted, that it’s an “alternate timeline” with “alternate details” and that “We could have introduced a new gay character, but he or she would have been primarily defined by their sexuality, seen as the ‘gay character’, rather than simply for who they are, and isn’t that tokenism?” Ok, so when Takei said he objected to his character being gay because it wasn’t right for Sulu, did they consider making a different core character gay, like Scotty? Jennifer Garner & Ben Affleck ‘making it work,’ not sure if they will divorce

When Ben Affleck gave his kind of slurry arguably drunk sports show interview, many of you noticed that he referred to Jennifer Garner as his “wife.” He was telling the same narrative we’ve heard from him before about how Jennifer Garner made his career possible by holding down the homefront, which is nice because it shows he doesn’t take that part of their relationship for granted. I didn’t put much stock in Affleck calling Garner his wife, but it may have meaning. ET Online has a pretty long story they’re billing as an exclusive, with quotes that they’re “making it work” and the detail that their source does not know if these two will ever file for divorce. It’s carefully worded, but it hints at a reconciliation. Three weeks ago we heard that Garner was “adamant” that she would divorce Affleck. Does this mean that he’s still holding out hope or are they back together? It’s been almost one year since Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner announced their split, and Wednesday marks the 11th anniversary of their wedding. However, while the two are separated, they still remain legally married. “They still have not officially filed paperwork for a divorce,” a source tells ET, adding they “don’t know if that will ever happen…” Affleck also recently referred to Garner as “his wife” in an interview on HBO. They’re “making it work,” the source notes about the pair, and as the months have flown by, the estranged couple has settled into a new normal of co-parenting and “the year of wine,” as Garner put it in a February sit-down with Vanity Fair… Affleck didn’t travel too far following their separation. Reports swirled shortly after they pulled the plug on their longtime romance that the 43-year-old actor was still a presence at their family home. “He still lives on the property in Brentwood, California, but in separate living quarters,” another source tells ET. There are no boundaries between them when it comes to their kids. The proud parents have been seen out and about together as a family on countless occasions. So much so that it has sparked reconciliation rumors, especially after their family trip to Paris and London in May while Affleck filmed Justice League. But will it happen? A source close to Affleck tells ET, “They’re in a good place and co-parenting the best they can.” [From ET Online]] So are these two still telling the press every up and down in their relationship or did ET ask and get this kind of non-committal answer? ET had another story a couple of weeks ago saying that they were “fine.” Whatever is going on, The tipster who sent us this story also pointed to this story in the Daily Mail in which Affleck was seen visiting a “friend’s” place in LA over the weekend. (Those photos are below.) He has wet hair so he may have been going for personal training or a massage or something. People has a competing story that Ben doesn’t want the divorce but Jen is “adamant” about going through with it. It sounds just like their story from earlier in June. It was a year yesterday since they announced the divorce and then dealt with nannygate: A friend of Garner’s says that “Ben still doesn’t want the divorce” but that Garner has denied reconcilation rumors to pals. She “doesn’t seem to mind at all that [the divorce] is not finalized,” but “she seems adamant about going through with it,” the friend says. “She did have the best time in Europe with Ben and the kids,” says her friend. “She seemed to enjoy spending time with Ben again.” “They have a lot of admiration and respect for each other,” adds a source close to the couple. The couple are continuing to stay together at their family home when they’re both in L.A. as Affleck flies back and forth to London for filming. Another source close to the couple told PEOPLE recently that “nothing has changed” in the relationship: “They’re still all about putting the kids first.” [From People] So this seems to be the new normal for them. I mean this kind of tentative relationship along with competing stories in the press about whether they’re getting back together or not. As long as we’re talking about them, right? Radar reported that Jennifer’s mom and dad, who live in Charleston, WV where she grew up, have had their home destroyed by the devastating flooding there and are staying in a hotel. They state that Jen is planning a fundraiser to help, and she has also publicly asked for support for Save The Children, with whom she’s worked in the past and which is doing relief work on the ground. Incidentally, Radar claims to have an exclusive interview with Jen’s dad which “reveals how she won [Ben] back for good.” That’s what they write in the title, but all Mr. Garner says is that he is “awful proud” of Jen and “would prefer not to comment on her plans. Any news will come from her and not from us.” This is Jennifer Garner outside a business meeting. Like Ben, she also has wet hair. Credit: FameFlynet

Bella Thorne: ‘Girls are just mean and so competitive — it’s so crazy’

For my money, Bella Thorne is the new Lindsay Lohan. I don’t mean that Bella is a cracked-out trainwreck. I mean that Bella, who turned 18 years old last October, reminds me strongly of Lindsay when Lindsay was that age. And yes, Bella is gingery and thirsty and she loves it when she’s photographed in various stages of undress, so there is that Lohan vibe to her too. Bella also has a knack for talking sh-t and giving pretty good interviews, so there’s that too. Bella covers the new issue of Galore Magazine, and she talks about real-life mean girls, #AskHerMore and beyond. Some highlights: Girls are so mean: “I don’t get offended because girls are really mean. I will say — no matter where you go in life, it’s high school everywhere. I’m sure in the work office, for you, there’s high school [drama], and there’s one girl who’s bitchier than everybody. Girls are just mean and so competitive — it’s so crazy.” She prefers hanging out with guys: “I’m very chill in that way. Other girls sometimes get really, really like, competitive and catty and ‘Who likes who? You like him? Too bad. I like him. We’re going to have a problem now.’” She is friendly with Mae Whitman & Chloë Grace Moretz though: “They’re all just such homeys. When somebody has a lower vocal range, it’s great because then I’m not the only one that sounds like a man. It’s the girls that are tomboys that I’m so down, any time of day, because I like to get my hands dirty. Germs don’t freak me out, and so I’m really just down to chill, you know, and watch movies. Anybody that can do that, any girls who can do that, you’d be surprised that like, everybody just wants to chill. But it’s not all the time. Girls ask me, ‘Let’s go out? Let’s go to this party? My friend’s famous and we should totally go there.’ And I’m always just like, ‘No! I’m tired, dude. I’m so tired. I just want to go home, watch a movie, sit on Netflix, and eat Top Ramen or order food.’” She works out all the time: “I work out every single day, sometimes multiple times a day. I only really work out my core, abs, and legs, and butt is included in that. I don’t really work out my chest or shoulders all that often because I personally don’t love that look. But what’s really good is jumping squats—really good.” She doesn’t diet: “I eat whatever I want all day long. I eat anything spicy, greasy, fried, with carbs, literally, everything. My skin doctor told me, ‘You need to cut out this, this, this, this.’ I’m like, ‘Shut up! No, I don’t. You just want to make me miserable and dependent on you, and I’m not going to because I’ll eat whatever I want.” She doesn’t believe in #AskHerMore: “When I watch The Oscars, my boyfriend and I have an Oscar party, and they’re like, ‘Okay, we need to record the first part since everyone won’t be here till later.’ And he’s like, ‘Why do you need to see the carpet? You do that all the time.’ And I’m like, ‘OMG bitch, I’m not on the Oscars carpet!’” [From The Daily Mail & Page Six] Of course I was rolling my eyes throughout this piece, but I’d like to say… I think there are many teenagers just like this. This self-absorbed and self-aware, this obsessed with telling you what they’re like and how cool and how chill they are and who’s in their clique and what they think about gender politics because OMG that girl was so bitchy to me. Maybe many of you know some great, amazing, inspiring 18-year-olds, but from what I’ve seen, a lot of them are like this. All I’ll say is that I’m really “over” young women telling people that they’re more of a hang-with-the-guys kind of girl, that all girls are so mean and catty, etc. You don’t sound cool. You sound like the mean, catty person. Photos courtesy of Galore.

Demi Lovato Quits Social Media, Tells Trolls to GTFO

Demi Lovato may be Cool for the Summer. But she isn’t cool with a lot of the stuff being said about her and to her on social media. Following a string of insults and negativity on various platforms, Lovato surprised Twitter followers on Monday afternoon when she announced her departure from nearly all of social media. “Damn I gotta quit sayin s–t. Bye Twitter,” she wrote. “And Insta.” It’s unclear what, exactly, prompted this decision on Demi’s behalf. But she added that she will remain on Snapchat and made it clear that online haters have simply made Twitter and Instagram too unpleasant for her these days. “I like Snapchat cause I don’t have to see what some of y’all say,” she Tweeted. ” “Follow me if you want: theddlovato. But why do people actually give a f–k what I say?? Like if you don’t care the gtfo haha.” Lovato, who recently split from Wimer Valderrama after six years of dating, is one of our favorite celebrity follows. She keeps it real. She speaks her mind. She focuses on important issues. Multiple times in the past, Lovato has spoken out about such personal topics as her former cocaine use, hoping to use her mistakes and life story in order to help others. In early May, Lovato went on somewhat of a Twitter rant, even referencing her bipolar disorder during the diatribe. It wasn’t clear at that time, either, exactly what prompted the rant. Pay more attention to good than bad. It’s not really too hard to figure out what happened here. Lovato wants to assist those with mental illness. She wants to help people overcome their personal insecurities and substance abuse issues. And idiotic trolls likely just want to make fun of her body. Scott Disick Calls Out Kourtney Kardashian on Justin Bieber Fling!

It's been a few months since the rumor mill began churning out notions that Kourtney Kardashian and Justin Bieber were hooking up, but for the most part, that scuttlebutt has since died all the way down. While Kourtney denied the rumors and Justin played coy, the reality star's ex Scott Disick now has something to say about it. In the preview clip below for Keeping Up With the Kardashians, the family plays a few rounds of Cards Against Humanity during a ski vacation in Vail, Colorado. It's Kourt's turn, and she pulls a card that reads, "Why am I sticky?" According to the rules of the game, each player must submit a card from their hand with the funniest – or most appropriate – answer to the question. The submissions included some real zingers, and Kourtney reads them aloud. "A Fleshlight," she reads from the first card. "Your weird brother," reveals a second response. But we think Scott's contribution kinda took the cake. "Justin Bieber," Kourtney reads, to which Kendall releases a toe-curling noise we never knew she was capable of. "I put that one," Scott finally admitted. Oh, SNAP. Kourtney remains pretty cool and collected throughout, as she has during the entire Biebergate phase. But we think the best reaction may have come from Khloe: When reports of Kourtney and Justin's "arrangement" first surfaced, Scott was reportedly super pissed. But it seems now he has a sense of humor about it – and why wouldn't he? It's one of the few things that's keeping him relevant these days.

Kate Moss & her 13-year-old daughter Lila Grace cover Vogue Italia: sweet?

Perhaps the “in” thing for magazines this year is mother-daughter covers? Cindy Crawford and her 14-year-old daughter Kaia covered Vogue Paris several months back, and many people loved and praised the image. And now this – Kate Moss and her 13-year-old daughter Lila Grace cover the new issue of Vogue Italia. Thoughts? I think Lila will look more like her mom as she gets into her mid-to-late teens. Right now, she’s just an interesting blend of both of her parents (her dad is Jefferson Hack). When Cindy and Kaia covered Vogue Paris in March, I sort of assumed that Cindy was trying to gently open some doors for her daughter, who already has representation at a modeling agency. Like, the deal between Kaia and Cindy is that Kaia can model but only if Cindy gets to be hands-on about her career. I wonder about Lila and Kate’s dynamic, whether Lila is even interested in modeling like her famous mum, or if Lila is just a normal kid, untouched by her mother’s career. Jefferson Hack did provide some clues in a recent interview, saying: “I spend a lot of time with Lila Grace. She’s 13 and my relationship with her and her mum, Kate, is the thing I’m most proud of. That is life with a capital L. Everything else is window dressing. I have Lila at least one night in the week and every other weekend. We use FaceTime most evenings. She thinks me and her mum are deeply uncool. I don’t think her music tastes are cool – Capital radio and Justin Bieber. She keeps me real. I’m not on Snapchat. It’s wrong when parents act like their kids. I don’t buy into the ‘my mum’s my best friend’ ethos. Kate’s a great mum and they have a fantastic relationship.” [From The Daily Mirror] Yes, when you’re 13 years old, everything about your parents is deeply and profoundly uncool, even if your mother is literally the coolest person in England. In Kate’s recent Edit cover interview, she even admitted that Lila isn’t even into clothes right now. So now I’m imagining Kate and Lila as Edina Monsoon and Saffy. It would be absolutely amazing if Kate Moss ended up with a tightly-wound conservative daughter who has no interest in clothes or cool parties.
