Jeremy Irons: ‘Abortion harms a woman – it’s a tremendous mental attack’

I went into Jeremy Irons’ Guardian interview only having read one quote, the quote about abortion. I thought I would just read the piece and pull the abortion-quote-block for context. But I can’t. Because this interview is BONKERS. While I definitely think Jeremy Irons is eccentric in a vastly terrible way – think of his comments on incest and gay marriage several years ago, or his thoughts on sexual harassment – I also sort of have to give him credit for putting it all out there. Most celebrities/actors would have some sense of self-awareness that their thoughts are terrible and should never be spoken out loud, especially to the Guardian. Irons does not have that sense of self-awareness, so at least we can openly discuss his on-the-record comments. You can read his full Guardian interview here. Some highlights: On his six homes & a castle: “I have developed a life which seems to need a relatively high income.” Marriage & Christianity: “Our society is based on a Christian structure. If you take those religious tenets away, then anything goes and it will become terrible – and you usually get into trouble. Adultery might be very nice, but finally it f–ks us up. And it f–ks up the structure of society. We don’t steal – well, some people do – because it makes life intolerable for everybody. Yes, you can be in love and raise a family wonderfully by not being married, but actually marriage does give us a strength, because it’s quite hard to get out of, and so it makes us fight more to keep it together. If divorce becomes dead easy – which it sort of has – then we don’t have that backup. Because, for everybody, relationships are hard.” Abortion harms women: “Take abortion. I believe women should be allowed to make the decision, but I also think the church is right to say it’s a sin. Because sin is actions that harm us. Lying harms us. Abortion harms a woman – it’s a tremendous mental attack, and physical, sometimes. But we seem to get that muddled. In a way, thank God the Catholic church does say we won’t allow it, because otherwise nobody’s saying that it’s a sin.” On Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn: “I think he might be the death knell. I love his idealism, but he’s not what I would call a politician. I think the Labour party is no longer fit for purpose. What we very, very, very strongly need is a not a party that represents the labour movement, but everyone who doesn’t like that we are governed, in effect, by global economics. We have to find an intelligent alternative to the Conservative ethos.” He doesn’t believe in interventionism. “It’s like genetic engineering. Everything is held in balance, whether good or not, by diverse internal forces. Syria deals with the opposition with great cruelty, but there are cruel people, as one sees from Isis, and you’re not going to remove that part of nature from those fanatics at that stage of their civilising development. Yet everybody – especially the Americans – seems to think the only way of life is theirs. Democracy? What the f–k does that mean? Freedom? What the f–k does that mean?” The US election: “[It signals] maybe the end of democracy. If democracy has become a gameshow where you vote for the one who makes you laugh most, or whatever, then we’re not worthy to have the vote”. [From The Guardian] There’s a lot to unpack and I’m not going to go beat by beat with Jeremy Irons. Let me just say that while I appreciate that he identifies as pro-choice, I do not appreciate that he uses the language of anti-choice advocates. If a woman feels psychological or even physical pain because of her abortion, the decision is still HER CHOICE. If a woman wants to say abortion is a sin, that is her choice too. But no man or woman gets to decide for all women what is and is not a “sin.” And let me tell you, the psychological and physical pain would be even more profound if the state forced women to carry unwanted pregnancies to term. Garry Shandling has passed away at the age of 66

Garry Shandling passed away on Thursday, March 24, in Los Angeles at just 66 years old. Shandling was one of the most beloved and influential comedians of his generation, with a dry, deadpan wit and a penchant for observational humor. He was well-regarded, respected and adored within the acting and comedic communities. He was most famous for his two popular and Emmy-winning shows, The Larry Sanders Show (where he played a late-night talk show host) and the It’s Garry Shandling’s Show. You can see his IMDB here. I had actually forgotten that he was still getting acting work – he’s been in a handful of Marvel movies over the past few years. Shandling had recently been diagnosed with a hyper parathyroid gland, which he discussed on his last episode of Jerry Seinfeld’s Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee. He apparently collapsed at his LA home on Thursday, then he was rushed to the hospital, which is where he passed away. Many are talking about Shandling’s appearance on that Seinfeld show – it’s an episode called “Isn’t It Great That Garry Shandling Is Still Alive” and you can watch it here. Twitter and the late-night shows were full of tributes to Shandling. Here are just a few along. RIP Garry Shandling and thank you for all the laughs. Ingrid Seward: William & Kate are ‘a rich, increasingly spoiled couple’

Ingrid Seward is a prominent royal writer, biographer and editor in the UK. She’s often called in by American publications to explain royal traditions or provide sugary quotes about the greatness of the Queen, the Prince of Wales or the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. Like, People Magazine interviews her all the time and often throws in some of her quotes in pieces about the Cambridges. She’s known as a more conservative and pro-monarchy royal writer. So this is sort of amazing – Ingrid Seward wrote a column in the Mail on Sunday about the Cambridges’ janky media strategy and just what a boneheaded idea it was for Kate to skip out on the Irish Guards on St. Patrick’s Day. If even Seward feels bold enough to issue a public smackdown, you know there are issues. You can read the full piece here. Some highlights: Missing out on the Irish Guards ceremony on St. Patrick’s Day: “So unthinking were her advisers in Kensington Palace that when a row about her absence erupted they replied that she’d simply gone home to Norfolk to be with her children. For Kate to miss an opportunity to honour the Armed Forces with such a lame excuse shows a distinct lack of understanding. If she wants to be thought of as a modern princess who will go the extra mile for the brave soldiers she represents through her charities, she should have been there at their new barracks at Hounslow, not at home in Anmer Hall. It somehow made the covenant between Royals and the military look as if it didn’t matter.” Seward blames bad advisors: “The Duchess’s advisers should have stopped to think how pitiful an excuse it looked to soldiers who have been divided from their families for months on operational tours since British Forces became engaged in the War on Terror in 2003. But they clearly did not. Sadly, for William and Kate, who could do no wrong at the time of their marriage in April 2011, it’s another unnecessary mistake.” William gets slammed too: “Last month the Duke failed to show up at the Baftas for the second year running. He is the Academy’s president, so it’s as if the cream of British cinema and a clutch of Hollywood A-listers had been stood up by their host. Again….Prince William said recently that the growing criticism of himself and his wife ‘came with the territory’. But it doesn’t have to. If he did not appear to be chafing quite so much at his Royal responsibilities and was more accepting of the affection on offer from the millions who will one day be his subjects, he could be forgiven a lot.” Instead of being friendly to British media, William is courting foreign media: “Prince William seems to be impervious to this idea. Instead he has begun to groom foreign media who give him the same platitudinous message that they give various celebrities. While holding the British press at arm’s length, the younger members of the Royal Family are giving cuddly, banal interviews to favoured publications and American TV networks.” Surrounded by privilege: “When William and Kate first married they insisted they didn’t want to be hidden in the ivory tower of royalty. They wanted to be with the people doing what they did, not surrounded by riches and privilege. Now they are doing just that. Of course they will one day be anointed King and Queen, and they will need their people behind them. Courting favour overseas won’t work and nor will ignoring public opinion at home.” The spoiled couple: “They may have been thrilled by their own cleverness at having a secret four-day ski break in Courchevel earlier this month but where they see an entitlement to privacy, the public see a rich, increasingly spoiled couple growing surprisingly distant.” [From The Daily Mail] The rest of Seward’s piece is a comparison of the Cambridges to the older royals, with Seward even saying that the Duchess of Cornwall understands the royal role so much better than William and Kate. Charles gets compliments as well for always putting duty first, for working so hard, etc. As I said, if someone like Seward is throwing down some heavy criticism of William and Kate, you know it’s bad. You know what I’m starting to wonder? I’m quietly developing a theory that all of this criticism might work in William’s favor in one particular way – he’ll use this as an excuse to quit his part-time EAAA job, which clearly already bores him to tears. He’ll say he has to quit the EAAA because something something criticism and his royal role. Then he’ll be on to a new scheme to avoid royal work. Oh, and the Sunday Express ran an interesting piece about Kate skipping out on the Irish Guards too – go here to read. Apparently, Kensington Palace is now claiming that they informed the Irish Guards “months” ago that Kate would not be handing out shamrocks this year. And somehow she knew months ago that she would need that day to prioritize her children? It’s a weird explanation. Photos courtesy of Fame/Flynet and WENN.

The Cambridges ‘were just like a family on holiday but with loads of help’

Just thought you’d like to see the front page of The Sun! I love how The Sun doesn’t even care, they’re just calling him Work-Shy Will all the time now. The Daily Mail has been doing it too. Anyway, if you’re still reeling from how tone-deaf the Cambridges’ vacation was, you’re not alone. Obviously, a lot of people in the British media feel the same way. Which is why all the papers have been on the hunt for damaging details about the trip, or any unnamed-source willing to go on the record about how out of touch William and Kate are. HuffPo UK ran some coverage about how Piers Morgan claimed William “hates the press and this is a very deliberate and unacceptable attempt to shackle and control them.” To which HuffPo’s “source” said: A source told The Huffington Post UK that this was not the case and the Cambridges’ decision to holiday in relative privacy was borne out of a desire to shield their young children from a stressful exchange with the media. The source said: “The Duke and Duchess feel strongly that small children should not be paraded around the media and inviting a trusted photographer allowed pictures to be shared with the public in an less obtrusive way. There are no deals to be done around the privacy of the children, and they [the Duke and Duchess] are confident in the decisions they are making.” [From HuffPo UK] That’s their habit, whenever anyone questions the way Will and Kate operate, they deflect to their children. It’s all for their kids, and they are raising their kids their way. Except that The Telegraph points out the holiday was mostly a getaway for Will and Kate, and they brought lots of nannies and staff to handle the children. Details have begun to emerge of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s first family holiday as a family in D, which included arriving by private jet and dining in some of the resort’s finest restaurants. They took Prince George, two, and Princess Charlotte, 10 months, on a four-night secret jaunt to the French Alps, with Kensington Palace only releasing photographs following their return to the UK. Conditions were too dangerous on Wednesday to land at Courchevel’s altiport, which has a runway of just 537m and is considered to be one of the most dangerous airports in the world. With no lighting aids, landing in fog and low clouds is impossible. Instead, the royal family are believed to have flown by private jet with their close friend James Meade and his wife Lady Laura Marsham. The jet reportedly owned by the billionaire Duke of Westminster, to Chambery and travelled the remaining 60 miles by a chauffeur-driven private hire car. The royal family and their entourage of nannies and security guards stayed at a luxury chalet in Courchevel 1850, the most expensive district in Les Trois Vallees, hiring an English team of chalet staff from a local company. Lined with designer boutiques including Dior, Chanel and Prada, the resort is the highest in Courchevel and boasts five Michelin star restaurants. It has more expensive hotels than any city in France other than Paris, including three with the top “Palace” rating, 16 with five-star status. The lower resorts – Courchevel Le Praz (1300), Courchevel Moriond (1650) and Courchevel Village (1550) – are more modest and affordable. An employee at Le Pilatus restaurant, at the base of the slopes, said that the royal couple enjoyed a meal at the restaurant during their stay at the exclusive resort….The couple appeared to have just been skiing and were accompanied but two adult friends but no children, he added. The Duke and Duchess were also spotted lunching alone at La Soucoupe, a popular and expensive mountain restaurant above Courchevel that is run by its vivacious owner, Marta Pecchio. The restaurant on the piste, which is only accessible by skiing, has a roaring log fire and serves dishes such as tagliatelle with truffles, squid cooked in its own ink, or grilled lobster. A diner at the restaurant said: “They clearly seemed to be enjoying themselves. They were on their own without even a ski instructor, just like normal people. There was no obvious sign of any security guards.” Emily Taylor, 23, from London, saw William and Kate walking just outside a bar on Thursday lunchtime. “I think George had been in a ski lesson because someone was carrying really baby skis,” she told the Daily Mail. “They looked happy and were just walking and talking. A nanny was looking after Charlotte. They were just like a family on holiday but with loads of help.” [From The Telegraph] Of all the complaints that I have about the Cambridges, I have really never cared about the fact that they have child care. They have nannies… so what? A lot of people have nannies. What I do care about is A) when they lie about how much help they have and B) when they lie about how everything is for the children when clearly, Will and Kate just wanted to go on vacation. They brought along their kids so they could pose for photos with them and then William and Kate enjoyed the rest of their holiday without dealing with the kids. And they honestly believed that everyone would just be so grateful to see the kids that no one would question it further. Chrissy Teigen: “It bothers me [when models say] ‘I love to eat pizza’”

A photo posted by chrissy teigen (@chrissyteigen) on Mar 8, 2016 at 9:40am PST Chrissy Teigen covers Self Magazine. We just saw photos from her royal-themed baby shower, which some of you thought was gauche and others found sweet. Chrissy’s photoshoot theme for Self was motocross, which was clever. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a motocross theme for a women’s magazine, fitness or otherwise, apart from the occasional motorcycle as prop. They seem to have done the shoot when she was early in her pregnancy and hadn’t popped yet, or they Photoshopped her, it’s likely a bit of both. In the piece they say that Chrissy won’t discuss her due date as she’s trying to throw off the paparazzi. (Which is bizarre to me as she seems to enjoy them, but I get that she wants to protect her newborn.) They also talk about her cookbook and cooking blog, her TV hosting gigs, how busy she is and how she seems to get in a lot of twitter fights. I know Chrissy isn’t everyone’s favorite celebrity, she grates a little, but she does know how to hustle I’ll give her that. Plus she and John Legend are genuinely in love and coupled up, you can tell. On her approach to social media If I’m passionate about something, I’ll say it and deal with the consequences later. On her difficulty conceiving and going through IVF The big question was why this wasn’t working for us when I was young and he was healthy. I thought, People get pregnant by accident all the time! How does this happen? Emotionally, it could be really hard. One of the things that saved us is that we never did that real fertility thing, where you’re looking at the ovulation clock and saying, ‘Honey, get home; we have to do it right now.’ John would say, ‘Let’s never be that couple that has to schedule sex, where we put it on the calendar and say, OK, this is our night.’ So before we did IVF, even if we went a few days or a week, our feeling was, it’s cool, who cares? On being photographed at the beach when she was going through IVF I looked horrible, totally not myself. Then to not be able to say what it was, it sucked. On being both a foodie and a model It always bothered me when someone would interview a model and say, ‘What do you do to stay in shape?’ and she would say, ‘I love to eat pizza; I love to indulge.’ I’ve always been the first one to say, ‘Bulls—! No you don’t.’ So I’ve been hyperaware of that, and I waited years to write a cookbook because I wanted people to know I really do love food.” [She eats what she wants but stays active] I like having that balance. She’s worried about their new arrival but John is laid back He’s been wonderful. He has a big family with nieces and nephews, and he actually knows more than I do about kids. It’s going to be very sexy to see this new side of him… I’ve truly never been alone with a kid. I don’t think I’ve changed a diaper! I’m like, how many times a day do they go?… I’m a worrier, and he’s very laid-back. I am the crazier one in the relationship, and he’s more relaxed, for sure. She wants four kids, one after the other I think I’ll probably be pregnant all through my 30s,. I’ve always pictured everyone around the table for the holidays and together once a week. It’ll be heartbreaking if it doesn’t end up happening, but hopefully it will. We’ve got some embryos on hold. Four [kids] is good, I think. And then, maybe a dog after. [From Self] There’s more in the full piece about her commitment to writing her cookbook, which is out now, and how she wanted it to both be in her own voice and as accurate as she could make it. She reads comments on online recipes in her spare time and her love of cooking came from watching her Thai mom improvise recipes. As for her interview, I came away from it with a better understanding of her. Chrissy seems both Type A, which I can respect, and rather open and honest while seeking attention. It’s the last couple of things which make her a bit overexposed. Chrissy is in our face a lot, but she’s somehow just as well known as her pop star husband, and that’s a feat for a model. Oh and I love what she said about models claiming they love to indulge. They may, but their idea of indulging is not the same as the rest of us. Here’s a photo Chrissy recently Instagrammed from the couch with her husband and one of their adorably spoiled French bulldogs. How did they achieve this pic, did they use a tripod or did a friend or staffmember take it? romance A photo posted by chrissy teigen (@chrissyteigen) on Mar 6, 2016 at 9:10pm PST A photo posted by chrissy teigen (@chrissyteigen) on Mar 6, 2016 at 1:09pm PST

Bristol Palin: Read Her Heartbreaking Texts to Ex Dakota Meyer

They called off their wedding in 2015, roughly six months before their daughter, Sailor was born in December. Now, Dakota Meyer is fighting for a custody agreement with Bristol Palin that will allow him to see his daughter more frequently. Daily Mail obtained text messages (published for court records) between Palin and Meyer, who served in the Marines, in which the Alaska native wanted her ex to see Sailor more regularly. “I want you to be a part of her life, from the bottom of my heart I do,” Palin wrote. “There’s nothing on my end holding you back Dakota.  I want you (and your family) to be in her life as much as possible. It’s not about us, and I don’t care if you hate me, put it aside and put her first.” “I don’t hate you Bristol,” Meyer responded.  “I have no reason too [sic] but my hands are tied when I legally have no right to a child that is mine.” Meyer, who had to undergo a paternity test when he filed for joint custody and child support, is trying to move things along so that he can see his daughter. His visitations, however, are limited since Palin is breastfeeding the infant, and the court rules in the mother’s favor since it’s in Sailor’s best interest. “Yea i don’t want to miss anything either and being busy will never be what keeps me from seeing Sailor,” Meyer wrote to her in another exchange.   “Hopefully everything gets worked out soon and I can be in her life.” Meyer will see his daughter for the first time on March 19th, according to court records.

Kim Kardashian & Kanye had a huge fight over Saint West’s first photo

Here are some photos of Kim Kardashian leaving Epione, a cosmetic dermatology place. It seems like the only photos we get of Kim in LA these days are as she’s coming or going from her many dermatologists’ offices. What’s she getting done? Laser treatements? Botox? Lip fillers? Who knows? Anyway, since the Oscar blitz happened, we haven’t checked in with Kim in nearly a week. So here are some stories happening around her: Kim is being sued. Remember that car accident she had in 2014? No, I don’t remember it either. Apparently, she back-ended some guy on Sunset Blvd and now the guy is suing her, claiming that he suffered physical injuries, etc. TMZ says that at the time, the accident was so minor that both Kim and this guy got of their cars and hugged after they exchanged information. Fights with Kanye over Saint West’s first photos. Kim released the first image of Saint West on her subscription app, and sources told Britain’s Heat Magazine that Kim and Kanye had huge fights about it. A source claims: “Kanye considered himself the ‘creative director’ of the shoot, and wanted to get the perfect shot of Saint. He wanted him to wear designer clothes he’d had specially commissioned, but Kim kept saying it was ‘stupid’ and ‘inappropriate’ and that she wanted something uncontroversial and simple, which showed the world that Saint is a gorgeous little baby.” At one point, Mario Testino might have been called in to photograph Saint.
