In Touch: Drew Barrymore & Will have been separated for a year

Embed from Getty Images The tabloids reported last fall that Drew Barrymore and Will Kopelman were having problems and had been living apart for a while. Then of course they announced last Friday that they were formally splitting and planned to divorce soon. In Touch now claims that Drew is the one who decided to separate after she had a personal revelation during her 40th birthday vacation that she was unhappy in her marriage. This is consistent with everything we’ve heard in major celebrity outlets, and it’s not surprising that there’s a specific moment when Drew decided to leave. That seems so much like her. In Touch magazine, on newsstands tomorrow, is reporting that a turning point for Drew came in February 2015, when she turned 40. She took a trip to Hawaii and realized how unhappy she was. “Inside, she was crying,” a family insider tells In Touch. “She felt like she wasn’t in control of her life anymore.” Things got worse quickly. “Drew began contacting her attorneys in the fall of 2015,” the family insider adds. “She tried to keep it together for as long as she could, but their relationship was broken beyond repair.” “Part of the problem is that Drew and Will are total opposites. He’s very organized and used to keeping a schedule, and Drew’s flighty, always late and is truly a wild child at heart,” the family insider tells In Touch. “Because she came from a broken family, Drew tried so hard to play the devoted wife role. She desperately wanted that sense of family and stability, and for a while she thought she found that in Will.” But in 2014, she returned to the big screen with the Adam Sandler dud Blended. “At that point, she wanted to ramp up her career again and Will didn’t want her to,” says the family insider. “They fought bitterly about it.” Adds a source close to Drew, “There was no infidelity, nothing dramatic like that. This has been going on for a long time. They’ve been working on their issues. In the end, they feel like, ‘This is a bummer. We tried.’” The couple remains on good terms. “They are still living together,” says the source close to Drew. “They have places in NYC and in LA. Both are in LA right now, living in the same house.” [From In Touch] That sounds about right, and we’ve heard it several times now – Drew was unhappy, she did some soul searching, they tried for a while and ultimately ended it. It’s sad but it happens to so many couples. They seem to be putting their kids first and focusing on what matters. E! also has an insider story about Drew, and it reinforces the narratives in US Magazine and People this week. Their insider says that “This was a slow burn. It was not a decision that they came to over night. They worked on things for a long time and have had time to adjust.” As I mentioned yesterday, this sounds so much like all the stories around the Garner-Affleck split and I don’t think that’s a coincidence. Drew’s longterm friend, Cameron Diaz, was on Andy Cohen’s XM show promoting her new book recently. Andy asked her if she’d reached out to Drew after hearing about her split and she responded in general terms, but it sounds like she has. She said “Everybody pulls the wagons around, you know, our friends, whoever needs us in whatever point in time. Even if it’s something that the public doesn’t know about. Internally we’re all going, like, ‘OK, who needs us now?’ And that really is, I think, a major part of the connectivity we need. We need to keep those things connected.” So it sounds like Cameron has known for some time that Drew is having relationship trouble. Drew just talked about Cameron in her Marie Claire interview so I don’t doubt that Cameron has been helping her. Plus she recently Instagrammed this: I am so proud of my dearest girlfriend. Gwen Stefani: divorce was ‘the worst thing that can happen to me besides death’

Gwen Stefani has a long, extensive interview with LGBT publication Pride Source promoting her new album. She’s asked a lot of questions about her relationship with the gay community, and about being a woman in the male-dominated music industry. To be fair to Stefani, when she talks about her “gay friends” or about one of her sons potentially coming out, she’s asked specifically about that by the journalist, in those words. She’s not bringing it up out without context. The quotes from Stefani which are getting the most press were when she said that she would be “blessed” if one of her sons came out. Again, she was asked what she would do in this instance. Writer Chris Azzopardi knows how to get a good quote. Stefani was extremely chatty too; she said several times that she’s horrible at keeping secrets. She didn’t exactly dish the dirt on her relationship ending, she only described how hurt she was. She did suggest that she was having problems in her relationship around 2013 and frames it around her own personal spiritual journey, which she credits with giving her the tools to survive her divorce. On embarrassing her kids and her divorce I can’t talk about them because they’re gonna be 15 and like, “Mom, why did you say that? You’re embarrassing me!” I have to think a little bit about that now. But I just think… I don’t know how else to be. Everybody knows what happened to me. I got a divorce. It’s the worst thing that can happen to me besides death. Her divorce was devastating My whole life all I wanted to do was be a mother and a wife… In February (2015), my family fell apart. It was devastating. I didn’t know what to do. It was a real big secret, but as I just explained, I’m not good with that. I tried everything to fix it. By June (2015), I went into the studio and started writing. I was praying. I had already started on a spiritual journey when I got pregnant with Apollo (in 2013) that was sort of like, “Wow, really? I’m gonna be blessed with a baby… now?” That was a miracle. It just started me on this spiritual journey and thank God it started then because I was prepared when I had the tragedy. I had that nest of spirituality in me. On criticism of letting her boys paint their nails and dye their hair Of course everyone’s gonna have their perspective and their opinion, and I know what’s real and what’s honest and true, and that’s really all that matters to me and all that’s important. So, it doesn’t really bother me. As long as my boys are protected and happy and I’m spending quality time with them, whether it’s doing sports or doing nails, it really doesn’t matter. Q: “What would you say to one of your boys if they came out to you one day?” I would be blessed with a gay son. You know that I would feel blessed about that. I just want my boys to be happy and healthy, and I just ask God to guide me every day to be a good mother because it is not an easy job. I’ve been lucky enough to have such a blessed life. I’ve been able to travel the world and meet so many different kinds of people. And it doesn’t really matter if you’re gay, straight, whatever. There are good and bad people, and I would be happy. I just want my kids to be happy, and whatever journey God gives them is their journey. On how it’s better now for gay people growing up, she calls “The Danish Girl” “The Dutch Girl” I do know that it’s gotta be difficult to be the alternative, to not be the mainstream, or to be different, if you want to call it that. I feel like it’s less and less (like that) these days, and it’s hard for me to understand because it doesn’t seem different or weird or anything anymore because it just seems so normal to me. I just saw that movie… what was it… “The Dutch Girl”? “The Danish Girl”…? Yeah, “The Danish Girl.” I think what was so incredible about that movie was just – that was so long ago. I mean, can you imagine back then? Whoa. Now it feels like nothing anymore. [From Pride Source] Her heart’s in the right place, even if she comes across as rather ditzy at times. The entire interview is long and well worth reading if you’re interested in her at all. Stefani references God and feeling “blessed” multiple times, as she’s done in past interviews. She peppers so many religious references into the conversation that she sounds like she’s from the south. It makes me wonder if that’s Blake Shelton’s influence, because Stefani was raised Catholic in California. I’m a former Catholic too and in my experience we don’t bring up God that much in everyday conversation. As for the end of her relationship with Gavin Rossdale, she describes it as a tragedy and like a death, which she’s said before. Stefani claims that she has a confessional nature but she seems to be hinting around the details behind her divorce, like she’s trying to keep some things from the public but is just dying to tell us. She may be doing that with the lyrics to her songs. “Red Flag” is about a one-sided relationship imploding “Big mistake, red flags fly… you know how to blow up” while “Naughty” definitely seems to be about Rossdale. Read these lyrics, “You did it, and then you hid it…The naughty, naughty things you do. I think there’s something that you might perhaps forgot to say. Locked in the closet but it never goes away.” That closet line sounds telling right? This is What The Truth Feels Like is currently number one on Billboard’s Hot 200 charts. LeAnn Rimes wore tiny shorts to her step-son’s game: inappropriate or fine?

We can go months without talking about LeAnn Rimes, and for that, I’m grateful. But spring is here and summer is on the way, which means LeAnn has emailed her step-sons’ Little League and soccer schedules to the paparazzi so they can get plenty of photos of her in short-shorts, posing as the Best Step-Mom Ever. These are photos from this weekend, where LeAnn and Eddie were attending one of the kids’ soccer games. Of course LeAnn wore shorty-shorts and a low-cut sweater. Everything is all about LeAnn, always! We haven’t really talked about LeAnn in more than a month, and even then, it wasn’t really because LeAnn was doing something new. In February, Dean Sheremet was promoting his cookbook, and he ended up talking about LeAnn a bit in interviews and the book. LeAnn’s lawyers sent Dean a threatening letter about it, but I don’t know if anything came out of it. I mean, Dean still promoted his book and we haven’t heard anything about LeAnn actually suing him, so maybe she dropped the issue. Which is so unlike her. What else? She’s still posting a lot of stuff on social media, but she’s been somewhat quiet and un-newsworthy lately. Beatrice Casiraghi wore Giambattista Valli to the Rose Ball: amazing or tragic?

The Grimaldis celebrated one of their biggest annual events over the weekend. Every year, Prince Albert hosts the Rose Ball, a huge fundraiser for the Princess Grace Foundation, one of the Grimaldis’ big charitable organizations. The Rose Ball is a huge deal. So is it weird that Princess Charlene didn’t come out for it? I’ve been saying that Charlene and Albert seem a lot stronger now that they’ve got an heir and a spare (Gabrielle and Jacques), but it also feels like Charlene skips out on a lot of stuff now that she’s got the babies as an excuse to not be around. So, at this year’s Rose Ball, Albert’s sister Princess Caroline acted as hostess, and her children came out. Andrea and his wife Tatiana were there, as were the rest of her kids: Pierre Casiraghi and his new wife Beatrice, Charlotte Casiraghi (who was also missing her partner, Gad), and Princess Alexandra of Hanover, who is Caroline’s youngest child, the only child Caroline had with Ernst August of Hanover. Caroline and Ernst are pretty much separated full time – I don’t think he’s ever in Monaco, and he seems to live with a succession of mistresses all around the world. Just FYI. As for the fashion, Caroline, Charlotte and Alexandra all wore Chanel. Karl Lagerfeld is particularly close to the Grimaldis, and he often dresses the royal women. I personally like that Charlotte went with a caped pantsuit, it looks daring and modern on her, although the silk satin is slightly budget for Chanel. The big show-stopped look came from Beatrice Casiraghi, who married Pierre last summer in a lavish, multi-nation extravaganza. Beatrice is Italian, so she chose to wear an Italian designer: Giambattista Valli. Her gown with big, frothy and red. I actually like the big-ball-gown look, and my only real qualm is that with all of that old-money and glamour, her wispy bangs still look kind of awful. Photos courtesy of Pacific Coast News.

Willow Smith, 15, is Chanel’s latest brand ambassador: great choice or meh?

Back in 2010, Jada and Will Smith seemed hellbent on forcing their kids to act like adults and have adult-sized careers. Willow began a music career, and Jaden began an acting career. While Jaden has continued with his public life, Willow has spent much of the past five years or so taking a step back. Reportedly, she was the one to tell her dad that she just “wanted to be a kid” for a while rather than a celebrity/singer/model/whatever. Well, now at the tender age of 15, Willow is re-entering public life. These photos are of Willow and Jada at the Chanel show during Paris Fashion Week this week. Willow and Jada were invited to sit front-row at the show because Willow is now the newest face of Chanel, as she has just been named the latest “brand ambassador” for 2016. Willow joins a long list of famous Chanel brand ambassadors, including at various times Blake Lively, Gig Hadid, Lily-Rose Depp, Kendal Jenner, Cara Delevingne, etc. I actually think it’s smart to start diversifying the ambassadors these days, so at least there’s that. The Chanel press release simply read: “Karl Lagerfeld has chosen Willow Smith as a new CHANEL ambassadress.” Personally, I don’t hate it (but I don’t love it either). It’s not as offensive to me as Jaden Smith being hired to front a campaign for Louis Vuitton womenswear, mostly because I am unclear as to whether Willow will actually be doing print ads for Chanel. I think brand-ambassadors just have to wear Chanel to big events and go to like two runway shows a year. But if Willow’s growth spurt tells us anything, it’s that she might make modeling her newest career. Incidentally, Willow is wearing a Chanel catsuit/wetsuit in these photos. The Cambridges ‘were just like a family on holiday but with loads of help’

Just thought you’d like to see the front page of The Sun! I love how The Sun doesn’t even care, they’re just calling him Work-Shy Will all the time now. The Daily Mail has been doing it too. Anyway, if you’re still reeling from how tone-deaf the Cambridges’ vacation was, you’re not alone. Obviously, a lot of people in the British media feel the same way. Which is why all the papers have been on the hunt for damaging details about the trip, or any unnamed-source willing to go on the record about how out of touch William and Kate are. HuffPo UK ran some coverage about how Piers Morgan claimed William “hates the press and this is a very deliberate and unacceptable attempt to shackle and control them.” To which HuffPo’s “source” said: A source told The Huffington Post UK that this was not the case and the Cambridges’ decision to holiday in relative privacy was borne out of a desire to shield their young children from a stressful exchange with the media. The source said: “The Duke and Duchess feel strongly that small children should not be paraded around the media and inviting a trusted photographer allowed pictures to be shared with the public in an less obtrusive way. There are no deals to be done around the privacy of the children, and they [the Duke and Duchess] are confident in the decisions they are making.” [From HuffPo UK] That’s their habit, whenever anyone questions the way Will and Kate operate, they deflect to their children. It’s all for their kids, and they are raising their kids their way. Except that The Telegraph points out the holiday was mostly a getaway for Will and Kate, and they brought lots of nannies and staff to handle the children. Details have begun to emerge of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s first family holiday as a family in D, which included arriving by private jet and dining in some of the resort’s finest restaurants. They took Prince George, two, and Princess Charlotte, 10 months, on a four-night secret jaunt to the French Alps, with Kensington Palace only releasing photographs following their return to the UK. Conditions were too dangerous on Wednesday to land at Courchevel’s altiport, which has a runway of just 537m and is considered to be one of the most dangerous airports in the world. With no lighting aids, landing in fog and low clouds is impossible. Instead, the royal family are believed to have flown by private jet with their close friend James Meade and his wife Lady Laura Marsham. The jet reportedly owned by the billionaire Duke of Westminster, to Chambery and travelled the remaining 60 miles by a chauffeur-driven private hire car. The royal family and their entourage of nannies and security guards stayed at a luxury chalet in Courchevel 1850, the most expensive district in Les Trois Vallees, hiring an English team of chalet staff from a local company. Lined with designer boutiques including Dior, Chanel and Prada, the resort is the highest in Courchevel and boasts five Michelin star restaurants. It has more expensive hotels than any city in France other than Paris, including three with the top “Palace” rating, 16 with five-star status. The lower resorts – Courchevel Le Praz (1300), Courchevel Moriond (1650) and Courchevel Village (1550) – are more modest and affordable. An employee at Le Pilatus restaurant, at the base of the slopes, said that the royal couple enjoyed a meal at the restaurant during their stay at the exclusive resort….The couple appeared to have just been skiing and were accompanied but two adult friends but no children, he added. The Duke and Duchess were also spotted lunching alone at La Soucoupe, a popular and expensive mountain restaurant above Courchevel that is run by its vivacious owner, Marta Pecchio. The restaurant on the piste, which is only accessible by skiing, has a roaring log fire and serves dishes such as tagliatelle with truffles, squid cooked in its own ink, or grilled lobster. A diner at the restaurant said: “They clearly seemed to be enjoying themselves. They were on their own without even a ski instructor, just like normal people. There was no obvious sign of any security guards.” Emily Taylor, 23, from London, saw William and Kate walking just outside a bar on Thursday lunchtime. “I think George had been in a ski lesson because someone was carrying really baby skis,” she told the Daily Mail. “They looked happy and were just walking and talking. A nanny was looking after Charlotte. They were just like a family on holiday but with loads of help.” [From The Telegraph] Of all the complaints that I have about the Cambridges, I have really never cared about the fact that they have child care. They have nannies… so what? A lot of people have nannies. What I do care about is A) when they lie about how much help they have and B) when they lie about how everything is for the children when clearly, Will and Kate just wanted to go on vacation. They brought along their kids so they could pose for photos with them and then William and Kate enjoyed the rest of their holiday without dealing with the kids. And they honestly believed that everyone would just be so grateful to see the kids that no one would question it further. We just saw photos from her royal-themed baby shower, which some of you thought was gauche and others found sweet. Chrissy’s photoshoot theme for Self was motocross, which was clever. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a motocross theme for a women’s magazine, fitness or otherwise, apart from the occasional motorcycle as prop. They seem to have done the shoot when she was early in her pregnancy and hadn’t popped yet, or they Photoshopped her, it’s likely a bit of both. In the piece they say that Chrissy won’t discuss her due date as she’s trying to throw off the paparazzi. (Which is bizarre to me as she seems to enjoy them, but I get that she wants to protect her newborn.) They also talk about her cookbook and cooking blog, her TV hosting gigs, how busy she is and how she seems to get in a lot of twitter fights. I know Chrissy isn’t everyone’s favorite celebrity, she grates a little, but she does know how to hustle I’ll give her that. Plus she and John Legend are genuinely in love and coupled up, you can tell. On her approach to social media If I’m passionate about something, I’ll say it and deal with the consequences later. On her difficulty conceiving and going through IVF The big question was why this wasn’t working for us when I was young and he was healthy. I thought, People get pregnant by accident all the time! How does this happen? Emotionally, it could be really hard. One of the things that saved us is that we never did that real fertility thing, where you’re looking at the ovulation clock and saying, ‘Honey, get home; we have to do it right now.’ John would say, ‘Let’s never be that couple that has to schedule sex, where we put it on the calendar and say, OK, this is our night.’ So before we did IVF, even if we went a few days or a week, our feeling was, it’s cool, who cares? On being photographed at the beach when she was going through IVF I looked horrible, totally not myself. Then to not be able to say what it was, it sucked. On being both a foodie and a model It always bothered me when someone would interview a model and say, ‘What do you do to stay in shape?’ and she would say, ‘I love to eat pizza; I love to indulge.’ I’ve always been the first one to say, ‘Bulls—! No you don’t.’ So I’ve been hyperaware of that, and I waited years to write a cookbook because I wanted people to know I really do love food.” [She eats what she wants but stays active] I like having that balance. She’s worried about their new arrival but John is laid back He’s been wonderful. He has a big family with nieces and nephews, and he actually knows more than I do about kids. It’s going to be very sexy to see this new side of him… I’ve truly never been alone with a kid. I don’t think I’ve changed a diaper! I’m like, how many times a day do they go?… I’m a worrier, and he’s very laid-back. I am the crazier one in the relationship, and he’s more relaxed, for sure. She wants four kids, one after the other I think I’ll probably be pregnant all through my 30s,. I’ve always pictured everyone around the table for the holidays and together once a week. It’ll be heartbreaking if it doesn’t end up happening, but hopefully it will. We’ve got some embryos on hold. Four [kids] is good, I think. And then, maybe a dog after. She reads comments on online recipes in her spare time and her love of cooking came from watching her Thai mom improvise recipes. As for her interview, I came away from it with a better understanding of her. Chrissy seems both Type A, which I can respect, and rather open and honest while seeking attention. It’s the last couple of things which make her a bit overexposed. Chrissy is in our face a lot, but she’s somehow just as well known as her pop star husband, and that’s a feat for a model. Oh and I love what she said about models claiming they love to indulge. They may, but their idea of indulging is not the same as the rest of us.
