Julia Roberts on staying in shape: ‘Remain calm, drink your water & be joyful’

The Cannes Film Festival starts next week, and Team USA is going to be pretty well-represented on the red carpet. In addition to the premiere of Woody Allen’s new movie, Café Society, Jodie Foster will be premiering her new film, Money Monster. Which means we’ll see Julia Roberts, George Clooney and probably Amal Clooney on the carpet. I’m genuinely excited about that. Julia tells InStyle – she’s the cover girl for June – that she might be wearing Givenchy, in which case it’s going to be HUGE… a huge disaster, that is, because Riccardo Tisci can’t design to save his life. But it will be great to see what Amal wears. Anyway, here are some highlights from Julia’s InStyle interview. On Jodie Foster: “Well, in my mind, she’s so scary, but really she’s so sweet… she’s so talented, notoriously brilliant. And she’s such a great actor. And really, she is very no-nonsense. She doesn’t think that there has to be some incredible, painful struggle to accomplish your goals. I thought she was crazy to be helming me and George—it’s like trying to keep puppies in a box.” Whether she’ll ever be on social media: “I think it’s like—what’s a good analogy? Listen, I don’t have my head in the sand. I’m aware of the different outlets, however you label them. It’s like people talking about a TV show: I can be perfectly aware of the TV show and the story, but it doesn’t mean I watch it. I have other friends who watch it, and they tell me about it. I mean, we were talking about Instagram. Everyone has Instagram on their phone. And I just, yeah, [if I had it] I would be looking at it all the time.” What she learned from her mom: “One of the greatest things she ever did for me … I remember asking her—when I had three kids under 3 years old and just felt like I was running in a thousand directions at once—“How on earth did you raise all of us? You worked full-time, and you did all these things.” She could have said, “Well, you know, you just do your best.” But she said, “Darling, it’s called day care. I dropped you and your sisters off at 7:30 in the morning, and I would pick you up at 4 in the afternoon.” But it didn’t feel like that to me. I didn’t feel like I was a dropped-off person who didn’t see her mom all day. I just felt completely part of her life, and she was part of mine. And that’s the magic trick: to make people feel that they’re with you when they’re not.” Whether she ever just goes shopping: “I do from time to time. It just kind of strikes at moments. The thing I never understood about fashion is that you put something on and you look and feel great, and then you put it on again 10 days later and it’s terrible.” How she stays in shape: “I feel like if I knew all the things to do [in terms of exercise], I would probably look like I was put together with tape. I would just go crazy. So I think, better just to remain calm, drink your water, get your sleep and be joyful. We definitely try to eat mindfully. As I always say to my kids, ‘You have to eat the good stuff to get the good stuff.’” Her first time at Cannes: “I’ve kind of avoided it. I mean, the first time I ever went to Asia was for a movie, Eat, Pray, Love. I’m a late bloomer.” [From InStyle, People] I always think Julia Roberts and Jennifer Aniston have the same kind of reaction to the rise of social media: social media came after their heydays, and they don’t really want to bother engaging in it. Surprisingly, Gwyneth Paltrow was in the same kind of boat, but she embraced her online presence and now she’s built an entirely new career out of it. Now, unlike other social-media-shy celebrities, I don’t get the feeling that Julia looks down on it at all. Like, she’s not judging it. She’s just not engaging with it at all. Also: I like what she says about her mom dropping off the kids at day care. Photos courtesy of WENN, cover courtesy of InStyle.

Prince Harry covers People Mag: ‘I know I’ve got a lot of my mother in me’

While I always enjoy it when other media outlets join the #HonksForHarry revolution, I don’t think People Magazine did Harry’s hot/dirty ginger-snap sexiness justice with this cover. It’s too much of a close-up! Of course, maybe Harry didn’t want to look like a roguish ginger snap. After all, he’s talking to People about his mother and the Invictus Games. It’s serious! Do not think about dirty ginger snaps while reading this. Some highlights from what appears to be a far-ranging and substantive interview: His mother’s influence: “All I want to do is make my mother incredibly proud. That’s all I’ve ever wanted to do. When she died, there was a gaping hole, not just for us but also for a huge amount of people across the world. If I can try and fill a very small part of that, then job done. I will have to, in a good way, spend the rest of my life trying to fill that void as much as possible. And so will William.” But he’s not his mother: “I enjoy what I do. But I don’t do things because I feel as though my mother would want me to do them. I know I’ve got a lot of my mother in me. I am doing a lot of things that she would probably do.” Creating the Invictus Games: “You turn up and you think you’re invincible in a super-duper aircraft, but you’re helpless. Then I come back and I say, ‘How can I use my name and that spotlight to the best effect?’ ” Creating the Games, he notes, was “almost like a cure for that pain I had back then.” American kids never believe he’s a prince: “Every time I get to meet kids and they have been told a real-life prince is coming, the disappointment on their faces when they see me without a crown or a cape…I’m worried because the American kids, especially next to Disney World, are going to be thinking, ‘You ain’t no prince, you ain’t dressed like a prince, you’re having a laugh!’ So I am going to pack a crown and a cape this time and some funny pointy-toed shoes. I’m going to sign the crown out!” Doing the second Invictus Games in America: “It’s like trying to drop a second album. The second one is always harder! This is what America feels like for a lot of us who planned London. This is the big one.” [From People Magazine] Sweet ginger prince. I find it interesting that he acknowledges that “I know I’ve got a lot of my mother in me.” It’s true. Journalists talk about it all the time. Harry-fans talk about it all the time. People who knew Diana talk about it all the time. He’s the one – not William – who is most like his mother. And I will never stop being fascinated with how differently the brothers access their memories of Diana. Harry speaks about Diana when he’s working, when he’s helping people, when he’s reaching out in empathy. William uses memories of his mother as a cautionary tale, and as cudgel against the press and critics. People also asked Harry if he wants to be settled down with kids and he said yes, he does want that but there’s “no rush.” Sigh… Also: Harry met Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau earlier this week as Harry did advance work for the Invictus Games. Trudeau really looks like a fairy-tale prince to me. Alicia Vikander cast as the new, rebooted Lara Croft: great choice or meh?

The last time we heard anything about the reboot of the Lara Croft franchise, it was last month, when we learned that Daisy Ridley was in talks to play Lara. The reboot, we heard, would focus on Lara’s earlier years, her college-student years, before she became the buxom Tomb Raider played by Angelina Jolie. Daisy is 24 years old, and while petite, would have been able to handle the physicality of the role. But producers decided to go with someone else: 27-year-old Alicia Vikander, a Swede. Vikander is fresh off the awards season, and this is the first role she’s landed since winning the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for The Danish Girl. Vikander also landed a supporting role in Jason Bourne, which filmed late last year and early this year, but I don’t think her part was very physical? I’m just saying… Vikander is a veteran of costume dramas, not physical action work. But I guess she impressed producers. Alicia Vikander has been cast today as Lara Croft for MGM, Warner Bros and GK Films in Tomb Raider. The reboot will tell the story of a young and untested Lara Croft fighting to survive her first adventure. Roar Uthaug (The Wave) is directing. MGM and Warner Bros are co-producing the film with MGM overseeing production. They acquired film rights from GK Films, which had previously purchased film rights in 2011 from Square Enix LTD. Graham King is serving as producer. This is the latest plum role for Vikander, and arguably her highest-profile one yet. She next co-stars in Jason Bourne opposite Matt Damon. Her success continues to rise following a successful 2015 that saw her performance in Tom Hooper’s The Danish Girl win an Academy Award for best supporting actress as well as a memorable turn in Ex Machina as possibly the best-looking and ruthless robot in the history of cinema. She also has The Light Between Oceans opposite Michael Fassbender in the pipelines. That film has been generating awards-season buzz even though it will not be released before the end of the year. This was a role that every young actress was after with Daisy Ridley, Cara Delevigne, Emilia Clarke and Saoirse Ronan all rumored at some point. Vikander looks a strong choice for this potential franchise, given she has form with a perfect English accent. She is currently filming Submergence for Wim Wenders opposite James McAvoy. [From Deadline] “…Given she has form with a perfect English accent…” If you say so, Deadline. Given the shortlist, I do think Vikander was probably the strongest choice, side-by-side with Daisy Ridley. I kind of wonder if Daisy would have been a bigger contender for this role if only her schedule for Star Wars was a bit looser. Anyway… this Lara Croft reboot was never going to be for me. It’s for a new generation of fan-boys and fan-girls who want to see a different, less buxom version of Lara Croft. I wish them well and I hope the scripts are better than the Jolie-version scripts. Also… The Light Between Oceans got pushed back for a fall release? I wonder if a lot of people want TLBO to just disappear. Given the absolutely awful source book, the movie was never going to be good. Photos courtesy of WENN, Fame/Flynet.

US: Kelly Ripa may quit Live if she doesn’t get one of her friends to co-host

I saw Live with Michael and Kelly yesterday and while I haven’t watched this show enough to have a frame of reference it looked like things were back to normal. They came out holding hands, they were joking around about eyelash extensions and butt padding and they seemed to have a great rapport. At times Kelly looked uncomfortable but you had to be looking for it. If it wasn’t for all the stories you wouldn’t know that they were having issues and that Michael is leaving in just two weeks. They never brought it up. He’s leaving early though, whether that was due to Kelly throwing a fit or just an executive decision it’s hard to tell. Kelly’s issue seems to be more with the ABC executives who kept her out of the loop than with Michael, who was just following orders not to tell her. Kelly is said to still be playing hardball at ABC after staying away for five days. Us is reporting that she’s threatened to quit if she doesn’t get one of her friends, either Anderson Cooper or Andy Cohen, to cohost. A source exclusively reveals in the new issue of Us Weekly that Kelly Ripa “is talking about leaving” Live with Kelly and Michael after Michael Strahan announced his exit from the show for a permanent gig at Good Morning America. (Strahan was originally supposed to make the move in September, but the show announced this week that his last day on air will be May 13.) Although Ripa, 45, returned to the show after a four-episode hiatus Tuesday, April 26, the source says she still feels “blindsided” that producers and Strahan, 44, broke the news to her just moments before the April 19 public announcement: “She considers it a sign of disrespect.” Now, the 15-year Live vet will wait to see who producers seat beside her to help weigh her options for the future. They’re considering actor Jerry O’Connell, says the source, but Ripa “hopes Anderson Cooper or Andy Cohen gets the job.” Unfortunately, it’s not likely that one of Ripa’s pals will come aboard, due to their prior commitments (the CNN journalist is covering the election and the Watch What Happens Live host is under contract with Bravo), so the show may not go on for Ripa. Says the source, “Unless one of them can come on, she doesn’t really want to do it.” [From US Magazine] This is likely a negotiation tactic to make sure that Kelly has a say this time, because if she really means this it’s short-sighted for a couple of reason. One, just because she’s good friends with someone (she has known both Cooper and Cohen for years) does not mean they’re the best choice for a co-host. Working with a friend can bring up all sorts of problems you wouldn’t have with someone you only know in a professional capacity. And two, both of those guys are super busy with their own shows as US points out. This sounds like Kelly is just trying to get her way, but keep in mind that it could also be a planted story meant to make her look like a diva. We know the network is not above that, think of how TMZ got the news that Kelly’s finances are overextended. People reports that both Cooper and Cohen will come on as guest hosts following Strahan’s exit and that additional hosts will include Josh Groban and Seth Meyers. It’s unknown when a permanent host will be chosen and a source tells People “They’re prepared to keep cycling people through even if its not resolved by the fall.” E! Online has a think piece about this while debacle. (I really like their editorials lately, they seem to be going in a new direction.) They have quotes from a media expert who says that the way this has played out so far “it looks like Kelly won” against the network. Their source also gives ABC credit for letting Kelly say her piece at the beginning of her return show and not trying to censor or pre-tape her remarks. Also, Bellamy Young of “Scandal” was a guest on Tuesday’s show and she said that although there was tension backstage it all felt completely professional during her interview. Kathy Lee Gifford, who was replaced by Kelly on Live 15 years ago after she put in 15 years with Regis, has some advice for Kelly which sounds like delicious shade. She said “Be totally professional. I would keep anything that is going on between you private. It’s nobody’s business but yours. But always, always be professional at your job. That’s what you’re hired to do.” You know Kathy does not consider it professional to take a bunch of days off work and then insist that a friend be hired to work with you. Jennifer Aniston: Gloria Steinem ‘taught me about feminism, it’s just about equality’

Jennifer Aniston has never said anything stupid about feminism. Since questions about feminism have been popular with entertainment journalists for the past few years, Aniston has been asked about her feminism several times, and she always maintains that yes, she is a feminist and no, she has no problem identifying that way. There’s no word-game about “humanism.” There’s no “but I like boys, thus I can’t be a feminist!” Well, as part of her People Magazine “Most Beautiful” cover, Aniston answered a lot of questions about different things, including feminism. And she cites Gloria Steinem as the person who taught her about feminism. She also talks about skinny jeans! Jennifer’s biggest beauty icon is Gloria Steinem. “I’ve always thought Gloria is quite stunning for many, many reasons besides her exterior. She’s taught me about feminism. There was a time when I was like, ‘I’m not quite sure I understand what this is?’ And she’s like, ‘It’s very simple: it’s just about equality. That’s all it is.’ She’s just taught me – have you seen her HBO documentary? I’ve seen it like eight times. She’s just a very beautiful, strong woman.” What Justin Theroux likes to see her wear: “Well, let me tell you. I think I’m pretty much the same but he really enjoys me in a skinny jean, which I loathe. But I think I have more skinny jeans these days than normal.” How she influenced Justin’s wardrobe: “Color! Not just black. It’s quite adorable.” What she’s learned about love: “Oh it comes in all shapes and sizes. It’s something to be taken care of and cherished. And paid attention to. It’s a blessing.” [From People Magazine] First, the skinny jeans… I’m right there with her. This is the most I’ve ever agreed with Jennifer Aniston. I LOATHE skinny jeans. And she’s right to dislike them too: she looks much cuter in a straight-leg or even a boot-cut jean. But of course Justin likes the skinny jeans – he even loves to wear his own skinny jeans. As for the feminism stuff… I think Jennifer could do much better than Gloria Steinem when it comes to feminist role models, but this is fine. She and Steinem are friends in real life, and I appreciate how straight-forward Aniston is being with the feminism questions. Photos courtesy of People Magazine, WENN.
