Ryan Murphy claps back at Jack Schlossberg over Murphy’s ‘American Love Story’

Something really funny happened in June. Ryan Murphy revealed some “in character” photos of Sarah Pidgeon and Paul Kelly as Carolyn Bessette and John F. Kennedy Jr., all for Murphy’s American Love Story project. The “screen test” shots – or whatever we’re calling them – were widely mocked, ridiculed and trashed. Fashion historians ripped into Murphy for not taking Carolyn’s clothing seriously. The Birkin community was outraged. Carolyn’s old hair colorist wrote a whole Vogue article about how Murphy is going to get Carolyn’s blonde shade wrong. Murphy came out, at the time, to calm people down and announce that he would absolutely hire some historians with an eye for detail. Well, during the June fury, Jack Schlossberg also criticized Murphy’s American Love Story project. Schlossberg being JFK Jr’s nephew. Schlossberg said that Murphy should have sought the Kennedy family’s permission. I don’t agree with that, and neither does Murphy. He spoke out again this week.

Ryan Murphy thought it was “very strange” when John F. Kennedy Jr.’s nephew Jack Schlossberg called him out over his upcoming show American Love Story. The FX limited series dramatizes the marriage and deaths of JFK Jr. and Carolyn Bessette, and Schlossberg had previously shared his fears about the show “profiting off of it in a grotesque way.”

Sitting down with the governor of California on the This Is Gavin Newsom podcast, Murphy said he was shocked by Schlossberg’s comments about the project.

“I thought it was an odd choice to be mad about your relative that you really don’t remember,” said the Glee creator, noting that he was hurt by the criticism. Referencing Schlossberg’s remark that his family wasn’t consulted, Murphy pointed out that there have been 88 films and television shows about the Kennedys, none of which have been authorized by the family.

“I never even thought they wanted to do that,” Murphy said. “Ours is based on a book that’s very sympathetic to both people with Paul [Anthony Kelly] and Sarah [Pidgeon] playing their hearts out.”

In his past comments, Schlossberg expressed his desire for the show to “take seriously what [JFK Jr.] stood for in his life, all that he achieved in it, and that they donate some of the profits [from] what they’re making to the John F. Kennedy Library.”

Murphy said that the family has not read the script, but emphasized that it was “not a takedown.”

After Murphy shared a first look at the production, he received some backlash from fans about the wardrobe and hairstyling of his characters. The producer took the feedback seriously, including comments about actress Sarah Pidgeon’s hair, which was a wig, being far off from Bissette’s natural blonde locks. He said they made the decision to dye Pidgeon’s real hair, which was an improvement.

“We rolled up our sleeves and we listened to people and corrected it,” he said. “And I like doing that.”

Re: the styling… it doesn’t bode well that Murphy didn’t realize that he had to get it right from the word go. The fact that he put out those half-assed photos without understanding the backlash they would provoke doesn’t speak well of this entire project. As for his comments about Schlossberg… I find it unseemly, if that’s the right word, to argue “you barely even knew your uncle” to JFK Jr’s NEPHEW. Like, I don’t think Murphy needs permission from the Kennedy family either, but I also don’t think he needs to taunt them or be really rude about the death of a beloved member of their family? As in, the Kennedys have every right to say whatever they want about THEIR RELATIVES and portrayals of their relatives. Murphy needs to suck it up and just let it go – say something like “Jack has every right to his opinion, but this is how we’re doing it.”

Carolyn Bessette Ryan Murphy Sarah Pidgeon

Ryan Murphy is mad that everyone hates his version of JFK Jr & Carolyn Bessette

For years, Ryan Murphy has been talking about producing a miniseries on John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette Kennedy. He’s finally doing it as an extension of his “American” franchises, and this one will be “American Love Story.” A few months ago, he cast Paul Kelly and Sarah Pidgeon as John and Carolyn. Then one week ago, Murphy’s team published a “screen test” with the actors, and photos of the actors “in character.” The photos and video were torn to shreds by pretty much everyone. People loathed the fashion choices for faux-Carolyn, and a million “thinkpieces” have been written in the past week about everything Murphy’s team is doing wrong. Well, Murphy is speaking out.

Ryan Murphy wants the Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy fashion fandom to know that he won’t disappoint them. The television impresario faced fashionista backlash last week when he posted a first look of “American Love Story” stars Paul Kelly and Sarah Pidgeon in what appeared to be full wardrobe and makeup as John F. Kennedy Jr. and Bessette-Kennedy.

The Cut’s takedown of the images and videos blazed with the headline, “These Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy Costumes Don’t Fit the Bill.” The accompanying essay trashed the looks as appearing to be fast-fashion knockoffs of Bessette-Kennedy’s high designer style. “I feel like I’m looking at Mango and Zara,” The Cut’s fashion news writer Danya Issawi wrote in part. “There is no life, there is no story, there is no familiarity with these pieces.” Like many others, Issawi criticized the jeans, jacket and shoes Pidgeon was wearing as well as her accompanying Birkin. She also wrote that she reached out to the show for clarification.

Murphy admits he was taken aback by the negative and sometimes what he feels were sometimes unnecessarily mean-spirited comments. “Carolyn Bessette is cleary a religious figure and it’s a religion of her own,” he told me Wednesday during a phone interview from set. “It’s very interesting that people become so inflammatory.”

But here’s the runway rub about the images – Kelly and Pidgeon were not wearing anything they’ll be donning on the show. Murphy insists their outfits were thrown together for lighting and color tests but he released the photos — which he captioned on Instagram as “stills from our LOVE STORY camera test” — because he wanted to get ahead of the paparazzi who he was warned would be flocking to the series’ New York City street sets. Filming began earlier this week and is expected to run through late October or early fall.

“There were comments like, ‘I hate that coat, Carolyn would never have worn that,’” Murphy says. “That was just a coat we threw on for color. People were writing, ‘How dare you use the No. 35 Birkin bag? She wore a 40!’ Yes, we have a 40 but we just threw on a bag from another costume department because that was the sound stage we were on.”

In fact, Murphy says he has enlisted a 10-person “style advisory board” to help reference and source Carolyn’s wardrobe. The names of the board members will be released at a later date when all their contracts are signed. The production has actually bought some clothing that belonged to Bessette-Kennedy. A replica of the Narciso Rodriguez wedding dress she wore when she and JFK Jr. married in 1996 is being built from scratch. Murphy lists off some of costume designer Lou Eyrich’s ever-increasing inventory: “We have multiple pairs of Manolo black heels and sandals from 1992 to 1999. We have the Manolo boots she wore in black and brown. We have her Prada tall boots. We have her Prada bags. We have the Birkin No. 40 that we have taken to a specialist to scruff it up so it looks identical to the one she would wear half-open on the subway.”

Sadly, Murphy believes, scrutiny hurled at the show’s Carolyn is eerily similar in to how the media and public treated Bessette-Kennedy. “We’re writing a story about a person – an unknown person – who falls in love with the most famous man in the world and suddenly she can’t leave her house,” Ryan says. “She was constantly being photographed, being called a c–t by the paparazzi.” Her every move and fashion choice was dissected ad nauseum. “They’re doing to our Carolyn, what they did to the real-life Carolyn,” Murphy says. “It’s not fair.”

[From Variety]

Murphy also complained about a Vogue interview with hairstylist Brad Johns, who did Carolyn’s hair – Johns trashed Faux-Carolyn’s blonde, saying in part “why the f–k is she all ashed out with her hair only one color?” Murphy pointed out that Sarah Pidgeon was wearing a WIG in those photos. Anyway, well done, everyone. I think the fashion/hair/Birkin bag community has successfully bullied Ryan Murphy into taking this sh-t seriously and hiring more fashion historians who will (at the very least) get Carolyn’s clothes correct. Murphy is now aware that they need to get her blonde shade perfect too.

Acting Courtney B. Vance Ryan Murphy Travis Kelce

Donna Kelce’s comments about her son Travis’s acting career are pretty harsh

Travis Kelce has his hand in several different pots right now. He’s still playing football for the Kansas City Chiefs, he and his brother Jason Kelce just reportedly inked a $100 million deal with Wondery for their podcast, “New Heights,” he’s starring as the host of the upcoming first season of the rebooted Are You Smarter Than a Celebrity?, and he’s about to make his scripted acting debut on Ryan Murphy’s new series, Grotesquerie, starring Niecy Nash and Micaela Morgan. I respect that Travis works hard, hustles, and keeps busy. Some people just work best when they’re going non-stop, but that doesn’t mean it’s always going to be their best work.

All of that said, Travis and Jason’s mom, Donna Kelce, recently did an interview with Variety. During the interview, she noted that her younger son has the power to “manifest things” (100% agree). She also then had some pretty harsh words about her son’s acting career.

Donna Kelce, mother of Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce, spilled on the advice she gave her son ahead of his scripted TV debut on FX’s “Grotesquerie.” The football star, who has previously hosted “Saturday Night Live” and once appeared in the comedy series “Moonbase 8,” is set to make his major acting debut beginning in the third episode of the new Ryan Murphy horror series.

Donna Kelce, in an interview with Variety, said she knows her son wanted to do the show and that he can “manifest things.”

“He has no fear of trying things, and he has no fear of failure,” she said of her son, who is dating pop superstar Taylor Swift. “You know, sometimes parents want to fix things for their kids. But sometimes it’s better to just let them fail. You learn the most from things you don’t do well. Hopefully, if this is something he wants to do, he’ll get better at it.”

Donna Kelce showed support for her son as she dropped by the New York premiere of “Grotesquerie” on Monday.

The series sees Detective Lois Tryon (Niecy Nash) working with Sister Megan (Micaela Diamond) as the two look into “heinous crimes” where they “find themselves ensnared in a sinister web that only seems to raise more questions than answers,” according to an FX description of the show.

Travis Kelce plays a bed nurse in the series, according to Variety, in a casting decision that “Grotesquerie” co-star and executive producer Courtney B. Vance admits “just helps” the show.

“I mean it would be one thing if he wasn’t a nice guy,” Vance told Variety. “But really, he’s a nice guy. It helps everybody. Ryan [Murphy] is all about publicity, and he does it better than anyone.”

[From Huffington Post]

LMAO. Poor Travis! It’s so funny that not only does his mom recognizes that acting isn’t his thang, but also that Courtney B. Vance basically acknowledged that Travis was only cast because he’d bring some ratings. My motto is always to never be afraid to try new things, so, good for Travis for putting himself out there (even though that role could have gone to a day player who actually needed the money that they’d have made from that gig). That said, there’s also always value in knowing your limits. Like I noted earlier, Travis and Jason just got a $100 million podcast deal, which is absolutely nuts. This all feels like the Universe is telling Travis, hey, maybe just stick to making money off of being yourself.

Ryan Murphy is leaving Netflix for Disney, but will continue some series with Netflix

In interestingly timed news, Ryan Murphy is leaving Netflix for Disney at the end of his five-year deal. He joined Netflix for a $300 million deal in 2018. So, he’s leaving quite soon. He and Shonda Rhimes were both big gets for Netflix, both having signed around the same time. And with Netflix, Ryan produced hits like Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, The Politician, and Ratched. But like he left 20th Century Fox for Netflix’s greener pastures, now he’s leaving Netflix for Disney, for an unspecified sum.

Ryan Murphy will depart Netflix at the end of his five-year, nine-figure overall deal, and is set to make a new home at Disney.

The producer behind hits including Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, 911 and American Horror Story is expecting to reunite with Dana Walden, who worked closely with Murphy when she headed what was then 20th Century Fox TV and he had a deal there. Walden, who is also one Murphy’s closest friends and confidants, is now co-chairman of Disney Entertainment. The new, not yet completed pact — Murphy’s Netflix deal doesn’t expire until the end of the month, after all — will bring Murphy back in-house with FX’s John Landgraf, with whom he has long had a close creative relationship, as well. Sources say the move has been in the works since well before the Writers Guild of America went on strike in May.

Disney declined to comment.

Murphy famously left 20th in 2018 for a $300 million deal at Netflix, becoming — along with Shonda Rhimes — one of the biggest producers to sign with the streamer. Snagging a producer who had once declared he’d be buried on the Fox lot was seen as a major coup for Netflix and Ted Sarandos at the time. But Murphy’s early years at the streaming service proved rocky, with efforts like Hollywood, Halston and feature film The Prom failing to cut through. The past year has been the most fruitful of the deal, with Dahmer and The Watcher, both of which he co-created with longtime collaborator Ian Brennan, becoming breakout hits for the streamer.

During his tenure at Netflix — which also included The Politician, Ratched and The Boys in the Band — Murphy also continued to produce popular franchises for 20th that predated his departure. In addition to American Horror Story and 911, his output for 20th TV included FX’s ongoing American Crime Story anthology, Pose and Feud, which has a second season is in the works. The arrangement had long baffled many in town, particularly in the early days, when his Netflix projects weren’t hitting and the 20th fare were. According to multiple insiders, the summer 2021 announcement that Murphy would also be producing an American Sports Story and American Love Story via and for Disney entities did not sit well with Sarandos.

Now, in an ironic twist, Murphy will continue producing installments of Netflix hits Monster — another anthology, with season two focusing on the Menendez brothers — and Watcher for Sarandos, while calling Disney his creative home. Dealmaking terms are being kept under wraps, though the deal market has cooled considerably in five years.

[From The Hollywood Reporter]

There was an announcement in summer 2021 that Ryan would be working on a couple of series in his “American Story” franchise for Disney, that apparently didn’t go over well with Netflix brass. The THR article points out that he did struggle to find his footing with his early projects with Netflix, though eventually he hit his stride and his hits. But even with his deal with Disney, Ryan will continue to produce new seasons of his shows with Netflix as he did with his 20th shows during his Netflix deal. So fear not, fans of Ryan Murphy shows on Netflix. I am guessing the terms of the deal must be great, because otherwise I’m wondering why Disney. I haven’t seen every single Ryan Murphy show, but I have seen quite a few. And I wouldn’t have guessed Disney as a natural fit for his content. I think his stuff is a bit “edgier” and dare I say, more interesting, than typical Disney products. But sometimes unlikely collaborations yield the best results, so we’ll see.

Beyonce Responds to Solange/Jay Z Fight…Sorta

Beyonce Solange

Beyonce posted four photos of her sister on Instagram this morning. (Photo: instagram.com/beyonce)

Solange Knowles deleted almost all shots of Beyoncé from her Instagram, but Bey‘s taking a different approach. This morning she posted four images of her with her sister– as well as one of her at the MET Ball with Rihanna, whose party was allegedly the cause of the fight.

-Oh, and Beyoncé may have had her wedding tattoo removed. WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN?!?

-Meanwhile, TMZ has a story about Solange and Jay Z shopping for jewelry together at Mr. Flawless yesterday. They’re sticking to it, even though Mr. Flawless himself told Wendy Williams they weren’t in his shop.

-Whatever was the cause of the elevator fight, Wendy Williams is determined to get to the bottom of it! She has a pretty compelling theory that seems to combine Jay‘s history with Rachel Roy with a bunch of blind items.

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are letting their kids plan their wedding, which means it’s going to be either Disney or paintball-themed.

-The rumours continue to swirl that Brad Pitt might star in True Detective Season 2. He and Angelina keep talking about working together again. Could you imagine if they both signed on?! I would seriously need to stock up on smelling salts…

Justin Bieber is being investigated by the Los Angeles police for attempted robbery after allegedly snatching a cellphone on a mini golf course. Sigh.

-Where there’s Miranda Kerr, there’s drama. Her new boyfriend had a knock-down, drag-out fight with his best friend in the middle of the street.

-What feud? Ryan Murphy insists Naya Rivera and Lea Michele are both returning to Glee next season. Of course, who even knows what’s happening next season after last night’s dramatically low ratings. Even The Originals beat it!

-I’m so glad Rachel Bilson is wearing shorts on her Health cover. It’s her thing.

Miley Cyrus claims that her recent onstage rant  (“I’m gonna tell those motherf–kers that broke my heart, particularly one, to suck my fat d–k and to enjoy hearing this song for the rest of your life”) had nothing to do with Liam Hemsworth.

-Hallelujah! Two and a Half Men will be put out of its misery after next season.

Lily Allen says she turned down a role on Game of Thrones because she didn’t want to have any awkward scenes with her brother, who plays Theon.

-Meanwhile, this alternate ending to Tyrion‘s big courtroom speech is priceless.

Kristen Stewart is a music video director now.

-CBS announced their fall schedule and surprised everyone by passing on How I Met Your Dad.  CBS boss Nina Tassler told reporters there were “elements of the pilot … that didn’t work out” and she asked the creators to retool it, but they refused. Considering all the flack they got from the HIMYM finale, you’d think those guys would be open to some constructive criticism.

-Speaking of the fall TV season, here are the trailers for the new shows coming from TBS/TNT and ABC. Selfie looks particularly terribleJohn Cho and Karen Gillan both deserve so much better. And ABC continues to come up with the worst names for shows ever. Shonda Rhimes’ latest series starring Viola Davis looks like a winner, though.

Nicole Kidman‘s Grace of Monaco debuted at Cannes to scathing reviews.

-I feel like we’ve seen the Gucci gown Blake Lively wore at Cannes many times before.

-And now there’s going to be a James Franco documentary because of course.

Olivia Munn is reportedly dating NFL hunk Aaron Rodgers after splitting from Joel Kinnaman. I don’t even know who that is but I’m assuming it’s a downgrade because HOLDER!

-Meanwhile, here’s the Deliver Us From Evil trailer with Olivia Munn and Eric Bana.

-This is so sad: the director of Searching for SugarMan is dead at 36, possibly by suicide. That was my favourite documentary last year.

Prince William hosted a star-studded event last night. I’m obsessed with Emma Watson‘s lip colour!

-This roundtable with the cast and crew of The West Wing is awesome, especially when they start bitching about the long days. Says Bradley Whitford: “The hours on that show were so bad. I mean, just horrible. I remember… saying, ‘The invisible carnage of the unf**ked wives and the children not being read to is just wafting out.’ ”

Andy Samberg’s SNL promos are predictably goofy.

Chris Martin‘s rep is shooting down rumours that he’s dating Alexa Chung. And reps never, ever lie.

Tom Cruise is reportedly stepping up his pursuit of Jessica Chastain for Mission: Impossible 5.

-Meanwhile, the new Edge of Tomorrow trailer repeatedly kills Tom Cruise. Someone clearly knows what the people want!

Your Favourite TV Show Is Probably Cancelled

Community cancelled

-It was a TV network bloodbath this afternoon, with NBC and ABC cancelling a bunch of shows, including Crisis, Believe, Super Fun Night, Revolution (the third JJ Abrams show to be axed this week) and a couple I actually watch: Trophy Wife, Suburgatory and — most heartbreakingly of all — Community. Now we’ll never know who the Ass Bandit is!

-Just in case you thought we were now stuck in the darkest timeline, here’s a good article on why we were lucky to get five seasons of Community in the first place.

-In really surprising news, Hannibal survived (likely because of its international funding deal, proving ratings don’t always matter when it comes to renewals).

-There’s still no word on Parenthood’s fate, and fans are freaking out. (My bet is it’s coming back, especially since NBC just wiped out its entire slate of dramas. Pay cuts are reportedly on the table though, so it all depends on if the cast is willing to play ball.)

-In happier TV news, Elisha Cuthbert, Krysten Ritter, David Duchovny, Casey Wilson and Kate Walsh are all returning to TV.

Justin Bieber has passive-aggressively responded to Seth Rogen‘s repeated slamming of him. It hasn’t stopped Seth at all.

-Sad news: The View’s Sherri Shepherd is divorcing husband Lamar Sally.

James Franco told Letterman he shared that naked selfie on Instagram because “it’s what the people want.” What people? I’m gonna need names!

-Also, James Franco may play Tommy Wiseau in movie about the making of The Room…which actually makes a lot of sense.

-Uh oh. Is Hilary Duff a Scientologist?

Lupita Nyong’o‘s photos from inside the White House are so goddamn adorable!

Rebel Wilson has been cast as the lead in a Private Benjamin remake, which I don’t hate.

-I keep forgetting that Paul Wesley is dating his former Vampire Diaries costar, Phoebe Tonkin. I’ve been side-eyeing her ever since she had a hissy fit over the fact that people were saying mean things about her character on The Originals on Tumblr. Maybe stop Googling your name, lady.

-The Breaking Bad spin-off just added three new cast members. So this is really happening, huh?

Nicole Kidman has responded to the royal family’s outrage over her Grace Kelly biopic.

Conan O’Brien gently eviscerated Sharon Stone’s new movie to her face on his show last night.

-I have got nothing but love for Angelina Jolie‘s crow-print dress. It’s much better than the jumpsuit-y thing she wore earlier.

-Meanwhile, here’s a new clip from Maleficent.

Lea Michele and Glee creator Ryan Murphy are in talks to team up for a real Funny Girl Broadway revival.

Jason Priestley‘s book tour is the gift that keeps on giving. Now he’s telling stories about former roommate Brad Pitt and a penis pump.

Lady Gaga took a jab at Katy Perry for having green hair and riding a fake horse on tour.

Sofia Coppola‘s The Little Mermaid isn’t even out yet, and already FunnyorDie is spoofing it.

Miranda Lambert is laughing off the latest rumours of a divorce from Blake Shelton.

-Here’s a clip from Hilary Swank and Tommy Lee Jones‘ western The Homesman, which is heading to Cannes.

Mila Kunis talked about her pregnancy on Ellen.

Jon Hamm has a really, really big head.

Steve Carrell and Jennifer Garner play frazzled parents in the trailer for Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day.
