Barbie got a major makeover, she now comes in different body types & skin colors

Here is this week’s Time Magazine cover: THE NEW BARBIE. Or at least your choice of what kind of Barbie doll best represents your dreams and journeys. Yes, after decades of size-0, thin-thighed, blonde Barbies, Mattel has finally changed their doll in some fundamental ways. The new Barbie will be offered in seven different colors/races, with many different hair colors and three new body types: petite, tall and curvy. Mattel will still be selling OG Barbie, but now kids will have more options. You can choose dark-skinned and petite Barbie, or tall and brown-skinned Barbie or curvy, white and brunette Barbie. All in all, there are 33 different dolls which will come out in stages. I’ll call them Bootilicious Barbie, Realistic Thighs Barbie, Nerd Barbie, Blue-Haired Hipster Barbie, Jennifer Lawrence Barbie and Ariana-Grande-Proportioned Barbie. The different body types are getting the most attention, but I genuinely appreciate the fact that they’re making Barbies with different skin tones and the dolls still get to be called BARBIE. They’re not going to call the different Barbies different names, like one called Destiny or one called Kim or whatever. All Barbies, in all sizes, in all colors. The Time Magazine piece about Mattel’s Barbie Revolution is pretty interesting – go here to read. They’re not even really pretending that this change came from completely pure, representative intentions. You see, Mattel has seen steadily declining sales of Barbies, but from 2012-2014, sales fell off a cliff and Lego became the biggest toy company in the world, dethroning Mattel. Lego prioritized the “Lego Friends” line, which teaches girls to build and probably worked really well for parents who want to encourage their daughters to pursue STEM fields. Meanwhile, Barbie was still the same-old, same-old and that was a big problem. So the head of the Barbie brand, Evelyn Mazzocco, decided to rebrand Barbie for millennial moms. You can read about the strategy in Time Magazine here. So, is this too little, too late? I personally think that Barbie has lasted so long because of fashion, and as long as they keep making great clothes for all Barbie sizes, I imagine Barbie will last for another 50 years. I’ve read the treatises about why Barbie isn’t feminist or why she’s blah blah blah, but for me, it was about the fashion and it was about having a womanly-proportioned doll to dress up. Star: Jennifer Lawrence feels ‘threatened’ by Brie Larson’s awards success

There’s a long history with tabloids setting up Jennifer Lawrence to be some kind of massive Mean Girl, looking to take down her actress contemporaries with a single Doritos fart. Maybe I’m a J-Law Apologist, but I don’t think she’s that girl. Is she totally capable of being mean, judgy and rude? Of course she is. But I don’t think she operates like everything is zero-sum gain, like she can be the only successful woman in Hollywood because there can only be ONE. I think back to when J-Law was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for American Hustle, and she was up against Lupita Nyong’o. Just my opinion, but it always seemed like Jennifer actively did NOT want to win that year, and she really wanted Lupita to have her moment to shine. That’s what I was thinking about when I read this Star Magazine story about how J-Law is Mean Girling Brie Larson. Brie and Jennifer are both nominated for Best Actress this year, and most people believe Brie is the major frontrunner for the award. Again, I suspect that J-Law is fine with that. And to hear Brie tell it, they know each other and they’re friendly. Brie said as much in her recent THR profile, saying: “I met Jen seven years ago at a photo shoot. We bonded over the craft service table; we were the only ones eating the doughnuts.” Still, Star’s source says J-Law is trying to quietly destroy Brie! Jennifer Lawrence isn’t happy about having to share the It Girl limelight with critical darling Brie Larson. “Jen’s starting to feel the heat,” says a source close to Brie. “She’s made it clear to friends that she does not want Brie in her crew – she thinks Brie is her biggest competition and she’s probably right.” Although her reps deny a rift, sources say Jennifer is so threatened that she even ordered BFF Amy Schumer to avoid Brie at the Golden Globes, but her Mean Girl plan backfired. “Brie was in Amy’s movie ‘Trainwreck’ so they get along well. But Amy spent most of the night trying to keep Brie away from Jen!” And while Jen knows she can’t be Hollywood’s favorite forever, she refuses to pass the baton gracfully. “She’s be smarter to make Brie a friend, not an enemy,” says the source. [From Star Magazine, print edition] OK Magazine had a similar story about Brie and Jennifer’s “feud,” with sources claiming that “Jen just didn’t hit it off with Brie” and “Brie was a little uptight for her liking and that she couldn’t hang.” And for what it’s worth, Gossip Cop spoke to an unnamed source on Team J-Law and the source claimed that the alleged rift is bulls—t. Sure. Do I believe that Brie and Jennifer are not BFFs? Sure. Do I believe that J-Law is, like, actively trying to shun Brie? Of course not. Photos courtesy of WENN, Fame/Flynet.

Daily Beast: The Middletons ‘were always thought of as being incredibly boring’

By the looks of it, Pippa Middleton finally “caught” an eligible man who is “terribly rich” and “terribly into her.” The guy is James Matthews, and the rollout on this guy is very, very interesting and very telling. For the past five years or so, Pippa has dated men who don’t necessarily want to be seen with her, lest the press go over their lives with a fine-toothed comb. I thought Nico Jackson was the exception, but he high-tailed it to Switzerland more than a year ago, and their relationship fell apart after a long, drawn-out drama, one which involved Pippa spending the night at James Matthews’ home before the Nico split was announced. Word is, Pippa and James are moving pretty quickly. They’ve known each other for years and even dated briefly a few years ago, but sources claim they’re already living together. As I said, the rollout has been interesting. Over the weekend, the Daily Mail had a piece about James and his “toxic bachelor” brother – go here to read. The gist is that the Middletons are willing to overlook James’ reality star brother if it means marrying off Pippa. Further evidence that the Middletons approve? Carole Middleton chaperoned a dinner date between Pippa and James last week. Which led me to this amazing piece in the Daily Beast, all about how Carole is forever a Helicopter Mom. …It might seem rather odd that, like a Victorian chaperone, Pippa’s mum came along too. To Carole and Pippa, it probably seemed entirely normal. As James is no doubt finding out, you may think you are just dating one of the Middleton girls—actually, you are dating the whole damn clan. “The Middletons like to do things together; this is not a family to marry into if you don’t like party games,” says one acquaintance of the family, “Carole’s seal of approval is an important part of any relationship her children might be involved in.” It is not hard to see how the easy, comfortable closeness of the Middleton clan, dominated by Carole, must have seemed a far more attractive paradigm to the young Prince William than the brutal game of he-said she-said undertaken by Charles and Diana. William is said to jokingly call Kate and Pippa’s father Michael ‘dad’. Acquaintances say that growing up, Carole ruled the family with, if not a rod of iron, a clear sense of what was and was not acceptable. “They were always thought of as being incredibly boring,” says one acquaintance who knew the family when the children attended Marlborough school, who also suggests that Carole’s long had a reputation as something of a ‘helicopter mom’: “Carole always made sure they had the right books, and that their pencils were sharpened.” In a sign that the relationship may be moving on, Matthews, 40, has submitted plans for a first-floor extension to his London property, seeking to build a bathroom above the kitchen, with the blueprints showing a ‘vanity basin’ complete with his and hers sinks. Maybe he should think about adding a granny flat too. [From The Daily Beast] I understand the appeal of a close-knit family, I really do. And the Middletons’ closeness must feel so exotic to William after the toxic relationships within his own family. But the helicopter-mom act is just bizarre at this point, given that all of Carole’s children are over the age of 28. Kate still goes home to mummy whenever she can, and Carole moved in with Kate and William for months last year just to run the household. And the PR blitz around Pippa’s new boyfriend has the vibe of old-school Middleton PR shenanigans, and I suspect that Carole is trying to make sure that Pippa locks this one down. My point? The helicopter-mum routine has morphed into something that seems more controlling and Machiavellian. And dare I say? Kris Jenner-esque. Photos courtesy of WENN, Fame/Flynet and PCN.

Kylie Jenner is ‘livid, super betrayed’ about Blac Chyna & Rob Kardashian

One of my favorite things to come out of Kylie Jenner’s “transformation” over the past few years is that people started calling her White Chyna. That, to me, is hilarious. Tyga famously dumped his long-time girlfriend/fiancee/baby-mama Blac Chyna for Kylie when she was underage. That was around the time that Kylie began her transformation too, and by the way… she does seem to be “stealing” Blac Chyna’s look. I’m telling you, this whole thing is very Brandi Glanville/LeAnn Rimes. Especially when the jumpoff (Kylie) is single-white-female-ing the original (Blac Chyna). Thus, we get White Chyna. Anyway, as we discussed earlier, Rob Kardashian and Blac Chyna are sort of happening now. Blac Chyna posted a photo of Rob’s arm draped around her and the Twitterverse exploded. Blac Chyna is no longer tight with the Kardashians, but they were all friendly at one point, so Blac Chyna really knows what she’s doing here. And I still think it’s really funny/shady. So how does Kylie feel about this situation, with her half-brother hooking up with the ex-partner of her current boyfriend? Kylie Jenner and half-brother Rob Kardashian are on less than good terms following news he’s been romantically linked to Blac Chyna. “Kylie is livid,” a source tells PEOPLE. “She feels super betrayed and can’t understand why someone in her own family would stab her in the back like that.” Blac Chyna, whose birth name is Angela Renée White, is Tyga’s ex-fiancée, and together they have a son, King Cairo, 3. Jenner has been dating the 26-year-old rapper since late 2014, but the pair didn’t take their relationship public until last August when they went on a PDA-filled trip to celebrate her 18th birthday. And Blac Chyna’s bad blood with Jenner involves her famous sisters. The mother of one was once close friends with Kim Kardashian West, though the friendship appears no longer. In addition, Khloé Kardashian and Blac Chyna’s BFF Amber Rose have had many public feuds on Twitter regarding Jenner’s relationship with Tyga. Furthermore, Tyga and Blac Chyna aren’t the friendliest of exes – he lashed out at her on Instagram in September for allegedly spreading rumors that he couldn’t afford the Ferrari he bought Jenner for her 18th birthday in August. [From People] Ah, to be 18 years old and dumb as a rock. Of course Kylie is “livid” – that’s exactly how Blac Chyna wants her to feel. Blac Chyna manipulated this situation brilliantly if her aim was simply to get at Kylie (which it probably was). As for Rob… I don’t really understand how he doesn’t see that he’s being manipulated too. But maybe he’s okay with it because he has such a love-hate/passive-aggressive relationship with some members of his family. And you know he still lives with Khloe, right? This might mess up their relationship significantly. Photos courtesy of Kylie’s Instagram, WENN.

Charlotte Rampling: The #OscarsSoWhite debacle is ‘racist to whites’

Charlotte Rampling got a “surprise” Oscar nomination for her film 45 Years. I still haven’t seen it, although the reviews for Charlotte in particular are wonderful. Rampling was snubbed for nominations at many awards shows (including the BAFTAs), but the Academy showed her some love… at the same time they were actively snubbing artists of color. So when Charlotte was doing a French radio interview this week, she was asked about the growing controversy of #OscarsSoWhite. And Rampling showed off why she’s so popular with the over-60, overwhelmingly white Academy voters. Oscar nominee Charlotte Rampling has claimed the current campaign to boycott the 2016 Academy Awards over claims of a diversity deficit is racist to white people. Asked for her take on the current furore over all-white lists of nominees on French Radio network Europe 1 on Friday morning, the British actor did not mince her words. “It is racist to whites,” she said. “One can never really know, but perhaps the black actors did not deserve to make the final list,” added Rampling. Asked if the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences should introduce quotas, a proposal which no current advocate of increased diversity has mooted, she responded: “Why classify people? These days everyone is more or less accepted … People will always say: ‘Him, he’s less handsome’; ‘Him, he’s too black’; ‘He is too white’ … someone will always be saying ‘You are too’ [this or that] … But do we have to take from this that there should be lots of minorities everywhere?” When the interviewer explains that black members of the film industry feel like a minority, Rampling replies: “No comment.” [From The Guardian] We can all shake our heads and roll our eyes, but HAND TO GOD, this is honestly how many Academy voters feel. And I’d just like to point out how sad/hilarious/insensitive it is for an old white Englishwoman to claim that white people are the victims of racism. It would be like Winston Churchill claiming Indians were racist against him. When a group that has historically been the oppressor of other races suddenly claims to be the victim of racism? It’s almost magical. An angel just got his wings. Photos courtesy of WENN.

Brad Pitt’s ‘youthful’ new look is the result of diet, skin treatments & IV drips

Embed from Getty Images Brad Pitt has been looking oddly “youthful” for a few months now. I noticed it first at the premiere of The Big Short in November, but a lot of people commented on his “freshened” look at the Golden Globes. I think it’s probably a combination of factors, some of which are rather harmless. Like, Brad had facial hair on and off for years, but these days he’s rocking a clean-shaven look, so he automatically looks different. He’s also got a haircut (that looks like a ‘90s wiglet), which changes his appearance. But there is something else going on. Aggressive facial peels? Botox? A facelift? Life & Style says no – their sources claim Brad’s new look is the result of a new diet, skin care treatments and IV vitamin drips. Brad Pitt is turning back the clock! An insider close to Brad reveals in the new issue of Life & Style Weekly that for the past several months, Brad has been on an intense antiaging regimen that includes a new diet, expensive skin care treatments and even IV vitamin drips! “He’s been telling friends about his new antiaging plan,” an insider tells Life & Style. “He’s been doing it with the help of a nutritionist and a personal chef.” The insider reveals the details of his new diet to Life & Style, on newsstands now. It’s heavy on salmon, walnuts and chia seeds, which are high in omega-3 fatty acids to combat wrinkles, plus lean meats and eggs, which provide amino acids to help repair damaged skin cells, according to the insider. Other staples in Brad’s strict regimen are brown rice and beets, since they are high in phytoceramides, which many people take as supplements to keep skin hydrated and plump. “What you put in your mouth shows on your skin,” says Beverly Hills dermatologist Dr. Ava Shamban, who does not treat the father of five. “His diet will help Brad’s skin repair itself.” The insider tells Life & Style that he’s also been supplementing the diet with “collagen smoothies and antiaging IV vitamin drips,” as well as going to get regular facials. “Brad’s working hard to keep his youthful looks,” the insider says. “The transformation has been nothing short of amazing.” [From Life & Style] Here’s the thing: I believe Brad Pitt is vain, but do I believe he’s THIS vain? I don’t. I think he would go in for some facial peels and some Botox. I don’t believe he would completely change his diet and get IV drips full of anti-aging vitamins. I just don’t believe he cares THAT much. But he does care, and we can see it all over his (new) face. Photos courtesy of Getty, WENN.

The Oscars are ‘almost at a point of crisis,’ Oscar voters claim they’re not racists

Here are some photos of Michael B. Jordan at the Louis Vuitton Menswear show in Paris yesterday. Look at this young man’s smile. He’s lovely, isn’t he? He’s always thoughtful and professional and hard-working. And despite the fact that he’s shown over the course of four years that he’s just as much of a star as Ryan Gosling or Bradley Cooper, Michael has never been nominated for an Oscar. I still feel strongly about this: Michael gave a heartbreaking, star-making performance in Fruitvale Station, and it still upsets me that the Academy didn’t recognize it. When he reteamed with Ryan Coogler for Creed, once again people raved about his performance, how good he is, how talented and multifaceted as an actor. And once again, MBJ was ignored. This is part of the reason why #OscarsSoWhite is a thing. This is just one example of how the Academy has been ignoring great work from racially diverse artists. We’re now one week removed from the Oscar nominations announcement, and one of the most interesting things is that the #OscarsSoWhite discussion just keeps getting bigger and bigger. While I personally don’t think that a boycott will do much, I’m glad the boycott conversation is happening because it’s the vehicle by which we’re having this larger conversation about race, representation, diversity and equality in Hollywood. The Hollywood Reporter is using the boycott conversation for the same reason, and in this week’s issue, they’ve got several pieces about #OscarsSoWhite. Here’s a short column by Dawn Hudson, the CEO of the Academy: There’s not one part of the industry that doesn’t need to be addressed, and it’s been this way for 25 years. The needle has hardly moved. It’s cultural, it’s institutional, it’s our society at large, it’s our education system — all of it — before you get to an industry that’s supposed to reflect this beautiful world. And the industry has been building up over a very long time, starting with white men running the studios who hire other people who look like them. It just hasn’t changed that much, and it won’t until there’s a concerted effort on every single front: talent, the executives in the studios, the people we mentor. If you have a person of color directing a film, there’ll be more people of color on the crew and in the movie. You have to overindex now on every hiring opportunity you have. You have to look at women and people of color every time there’s an opening and really not stop until you’ve worked to find qualified candidates. That’s for directing, crewing up, filling a marketing position, finding interns, hiring your next assistant. If you did that, it would go a long way. At the Academy, the people we’ve hired in the past four years have been between 45 and 50 percent people of color. Our staff also has worked very closely with the executive committees in all the Academy branches to identify talented artists of color to make sure they’re being considered for membership. That has resulted in every class in the last four years being more diverse than the previous classes. We are stepping up our efforts in every area. You’ve already seen a change in membership and new members. You’ve seen a change in our staff. But I was devastated that the acting nominations were all white. There are a lot of artists of color who have put out really good work in more films than in other years. This feels like an inflection point, almost at a point of crisis. Everyone is talking about this. It’s not going to be overnight — just the pace can go faster. As [Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel] said, “Never let a good crisis go to waste.” [From THR] “Almost at a point of crisis”? Good. I say the conversations should keep happening. Let the pressure keep building and building until the Academy really does feel like there’s a genuine crisis. Because THR also published another story which included interviews with voting Academy members, including actress Penelope Ann Miller. Here’s what she said: “I voted for a number of black performers, and I was sorry they weren’t nominated. But to imply that this is because all of us are racists is extremely offensive. I don’t want to be lumped into a category of being a racist because I’m certainly not and because I support and benefit from the talent of black people in this business. It was just an incredibly competitive year. I loved Beasts of No Nation, and I loved Idris Elba in it — I just think not enough people saw it, and that’s sometimes what happens. Straight Outta Compton was a great film; I think it just lost some Academy members who are older. There were a lot of omissions of white people that I think were just as disappointing — I’m sure [Spotlight’s] Michael Keaton is bummed, you know? There were an incredible number of films in 2015 that were primarily about white people. Talk to the studios about changing that, not the Academy. There’s only so much we can do. I think when you make race the issue, it can divide people even further, and that’s what I worry about.” [From THR] She’s basically saying that sure, she voted for some black people so that means she’s not racist, but of course it’s no big deal that no actors of color were nominated because their performances just weren’t up it. And maybe Michael Keaton is bummed a little bit, but he was still nominated last year, an honor that was not bestowed on David Oyelowo for his extraordinary performance in Selma. And Keaton gave a great performance this year in a film that’s nominated for Best Picture, because of course it is – all of the Best Picture nominees this year are about white people. #KeatonIsBummed is the new #OscarsSoWhite.
