Larry David thinks white people only pretend to like ‘Hamilton’ to be ‘hip’

FFN_KM_DumbDumberTo_Prem_110314_51575581

I’m going back and forth about whether I think these Larry David quotes are offensive. Larry David was doing an interview with the Mike Lupica Show this week, and he was asked about the smash Broadway musical Hamilton. Hamilton has been a phenomenon for more than a year, it’s pulled in tens of millions of dollars in ticket sales, and Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda has won a Pulitzer and a Peabody, plus the musical picked up no fewer than 16 Tony Award nominations. Basically, everyone thinks Hamilton is THE BEST. Full-stop. But no, says Larry David. Hamilton is popular because white people are just pretending to like it so they can be hip.

“Hamilton” may be making history on Broadway, but Larry David, for one, is curbing his enthusiasm. The comic actor took to the “Mike Lupica Show” podcast, which debuted Tuesday, to express his theory that a lot of the demand comes from white ticket-buyers trying to “solidify their liberal bona fides.”

“Yeah, ‘Hamilton’ — it was pretty amazing,” David told the Daily News columnist. “But I have a feeling there are a lot of white people who are saying they are completely blown away even though they didn’t really understand half of the things the people on stage were saying. They just want to solidify their liberal bona fides and how cool they are: ‘Yea, I love Hamilton. Yea I get it, I’m hip.’”

Lupica made a connection to the kind of voters who mislead political pollsters.

“I think some of them are. No but, the show is amazing,” said David. “No doubt about it, it’s an incredible show, but I do have this theory on a lot of the people that are seeing it.”

Madonna to Sean Penn: ‘I loved you from the moment that I laid eyes on you’

As we discussed on Sunday (you might have missed it), Madonna came out for Sean Penn’s now-annual pre-Globes fundraiser for his J/P Haitian Relief Organization. Last year’s fundraiser saw Sean walking the carpet with his then-live-in girlfriend Charlize Theron. And now he’s got his arm around his ex-wife Madonna and two of her kids (Mercy and David). Madonna was there to support Sean, of course, and to perform. She sang “La Vie En Rose” while strumming a ukulele, I sh-t you not. She also told the crowd, “I want to say Sean that I loved you from the moment that I laid eyes on you and I still love you just the same.” Oh, Madonna! Play hard to get a little bit. He’s nice to you a few times a year now and suddenly you’re back to making public declarations of love? SHADY.

As for Sean’s other shady mess, the interview he conducted with El Chapo for Rolling Stone is still making headlines here in America and around the world. Legit journalists are flabbergasted. Politicians are dumbstruck. Law enforcement professionals are investigating. You see, while law enforcement officials have said that Penn’s interview with El Chapo helped them track down El Chapo, they want it to be clear: Penn was actually trying to be sneaky and sly, but he was just a miserable failure at hiding his tracks.

Matt Damon mansplains diversity on Project Greenlight: problematic or fine?

Matt Damon Talks With NASA

Matt Damon, to date, has arguably yet to make a false move when it comes to his public image. (Yes there’s the Minnie Driver thing, which is ancient news.) This is of course in sharp contrast to his buddy Ben Affleck, who is going through a rather scandalous separation and most likely a divorce. All of that may have changed in the first episode of Damon and Affleck’s director-search reality series, Project Greenlight, which returned to HBO on Sunday after a ten year hiatus.

The context is that 13 young directors were chosen out of thousands of applicants to come to LA to shoot a short film, written by the Farrelly Brothers (Something About Mary, Dumb and Dumber). Their entries and subsequent interviews would enable a panel of nine Hollywood insiders, including the Farrelly Brothers, Damon, Affleck, and several producers, to pick a finalist to film a $3 million comedy for HBO. Unlike past seasons, this is more focused on the process of making the film, with the director selection occurring in the first episode.

As the panel, which consisted of seven white men and two women, discussed their final four selections, producer Effie Brown (Dear White People, But I’m a Cheerleader) brought up the fact that one directing duo was diverse. She had given voice over prior to this explaining why, as a woman of color growing up in the 70s, minority representation was important to her. She said “There weren’t a lot of positive representations of women and people of color [in film]… we were gangsters, prostitutes, drug addicts… this is an opportunity where I can change that.” Then, when Brown tried to advocate for the directorial team of her choice, a woman and a recent emigrant from Vietnam, Damon interrupted her and shot her down with a problematic argument – that casting could make up for a lack of minorities behind the scenes. It’s worth noting that Brown was the only panel member who voted for this directing team, but that doesn’t excuse Damon’s explanation. Also, the only black person in the film would be a prostitute (Harmony) with a white pimp, and everyone agreed that the script was questionable and would need to be changed.

Here’s that exchange in some context. If you watch the show it’s at about 30 minutes in, and there’s a shorter clip below:

Brown: I just want to bring out something. I want to urge people that whoever this director is, the way that they’re going to treat the character of Harmony, her being a prostitute, the only black person, her being a prostitute who gets hit by her pimp. You’re looking at this group right here and who you’re picking and the story that you’re doing and I want to make sure that we’re doing our best for the film.

Damon: I would say that only team that’s left with diversity is the team that announced that they liked this script the most as it is and that’s Leo and Kristen. Everyone else had major problems with it, with exactly the things you’re bringing up and exactly the things that we brought up to each other, so I…

Brown: Not necessarily true.

Damon: So I think on the surface they look like one thing but they might end up giving us something that we don’t want and we’re talking about diversity, you do it in the casting of the film, not in the casting of the show.

Brown: Whoo. Wow. Ok.

Damon: Do you want the best director?

Brown: Hold on, I’m not mad. With love in my heart, even Leo and Kristen talked about, and we can roll it back, he said it was good having her because she has a perspective that he hadn’t even thought about when talking about women. They did talk about it.

Damon: Right, that’s totally fair.

Jennifer Todd, President of Pearl Street Films: You know, I have a problem with Harmony.

Peter Farrelly: Everybody does. I have a big problem with it as written.

Todd: I don’t look to just them to fix that, to be honest, I think we also have work to do.

Matt Damon (in voiceover): I’m glad Effie flagged the issue of diversity for all of us because filmmaking should [be shown] through a broader net and it’s high time for that to change, but ultimately if suddenly you change the rules of this competition at the eleventh hour, it just seems like you would undermine, what the competition is supposed to be about, which is about giving somebody this job based entirely on merit and leaving all other factors out of it. It’s just strictly a filmmaking competition.

Matt Damon (back in room): I think the whole point of this thing is you go for the best director, period. This is what we have and this is what we have to chose. The only thing I can go by is the work that they’ve done.

[From Project Greenlight, aired 9-13-15]

Damon argued that they could change the way the character was treated (although Damon was not as emphatic about it as the others) and that this particular directorial team may have been diverse, but that it didn’t mean that they would deliver in creating a nuanced character of color. His argument, that it didn’t matter if there was diversity behind the scenes, was short-sighted and he should know better. This issue received so much press this awards season with the snub of Ava DuVernay for a best director nom and the revelation of how white and old the Oscar voters are. Less than 7% of the highest grossing film directors are female, not to mention the lack of minority representation in film both behind and in front of the camera. Both matter, and both affect each other.

Ultimately they picked the director they thought would do the best job, but it’s telling that there was just one minority member on their panel and that her argument was quickly dismissed. Damon may have been “right” in the context of the competition, but he could have acknowledged Brown’s argument instead of dismissing it out of hand. Even the most liberal producers and directors can be blind to the issue of lack of diversity in film. Also, Kaiser wanted me to point out that the “merit” argument is “what white people use to silence diverse voices again and again.”

Tori Spelling brags about sleeping with Dean McDermott the day they met

Tori Spelling

Tori Spelling had another medical emergency a few days ago. She was hospitalized at Cedars Sinai for pneumonia-like symptoms. The Mail said doctors suspected Enterovirus. TMZ went further and added that Tori was under an Ebola-like quarantine. I didn’t cover the story because I was afraid of saying something not-so-nice. Tori may actually be very ill, but you can bet she let the tv cameras film the whole ordeal.

The new season of True Tori rages forth. We last spoke of Tori having lunch with Dean McDermott’s ex, Mary Jo Eustace. The encounter only made Tori look like a flailing floozy compared to the composed, civilized Mary Jo. I wondered why Mary Jo would appear on the show. Radar reveals that she was paid $10,000 for her trouble. That’s funny. Tori’s only making $50,000 for the whole season, and Dean’s making nothing.

The latest promo for the show features Tori bragging about how she and Dean slept together the first night they met (on the set of a Lifetime movie). Tori previously said she instantly wanted to marry Dean: “Like a million blocks of hearts first fell on me.” The main problem is that Dean was married and adopting a child with Mary Jo. Tori was married too, but whatever. She describes their initial lovemaking as the best thing ever. They weren’t just hitting it. They were in looove.

In this video, Tori says “It wasn’t like, ‘oh, just get your rocks off, have sex with someone just to have sex,’ you know? It was a conscious decision, like, fell head over heels for you.” Sure it was. Here’s Tori’s latest heartfelt speech:

She’s so full of it. Tori thinks Dean cheated on her because it’s “karma.” No. Dean cheated because Dean is a cheater. Tori is also a cheater. That’s the only truth of this whole dumb show. I don’t even know if Dean really cheated on Tori, but Tori filmed herself looking at a photo of Emily Goodhand. Tori was upset because she didn’t think Emily was attractive. Then Tori whined about finances before bragging about the 16-day sexfest she and Dean enjoyed this summer. I bet they filmed that too. God, this is so gross.

Snoop Dogg was brutally mean to Iggy Azalea in the strangest feud

Snoop Dogg

I’ve reached the point where Snoop Dogg’s charming ways cannot resurrect any ounce of goodwill for him. The sad thing is that his behavior towards Iggy Azalea is what caused me to put down the Snoop pipe. He’s been acting weird for months though. His latest alter ego was a white guy named Todd, which wasn’t offensive but just dumb.

Snoop’s latest antics arrive after Iggy Azalea dared to walk outside without makeup last week. She looked very young and fresh even though her zipper-sweater was dreadful. Snoop decided to make fun of Iggy’s makeup-less face. Snoop mercilessly did so by Instagramming this photo. Pretty brutal, right? I don’t know what prompted Snoop to be so rude.

Iggy should have ignored Snoop’s trash talking. Instead, she fired back with a now-deleted photo of Snoop that described him as “when your drug addict aunt gets clean.” This was a childish response but nowhere as mean as Snoop’s first shot at her.

Snoop Dogg

Then things got super nasty. TMZ has a NSFW video of Snoop calling Iggy the c-word and the n-word; he said Iggy’s boyfriend, Nick Young, should “put her in check.” Nick had a response for Snoop:

Snoop wasn’t done. He Instagrammed this picture of Iggy photoshopped into a White Chicks 2 advertisement: “Ok last one n Imma leave the bitch alone!! Hahahahahah So says Todd.” Then came another photo: “Iggy was a man So says Todd. Hahahahahahah goodnight bitch !! Kangaroo yo pink punk a** bac to the land down unda !!

Ugh. This nonsense did not go over well. It was obvious that Snoop wasn’t going to stop on his own, so Iggy’s mentor, T.I. called Snoop on the phone. They exchanged words. Snoop posted an apology video yesterday afternoon.

Well. It’s nice that Snoop posted an apology video, but it’s sad that it took a call from T.I. to make him behave. Iggy tweeted in response, “I appreciate the apology @snoopdogg.” And this bizarre feud has come to an end. Maybe? Snoop was wayyy out of line here.

Oh, and Azealia Banks tried to jump into the feud too, but everyone ignored her.

Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes Haven’t Broken Up, Everyone!

tff beyond the pines 080912

Press pause on your DVD of The Notebook and scratch out those hearts you were drawing with “[Your Name] + Ryan Gosling = True Love 4 Eva” on your notebooks, because it turns out all those rumours of Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes deciding to call it quits are false! That is, at least according to a rep for Eva, who has everything to gain by trying to keep her ass in the spotlight for SOMETHING.

Ryan and Eva have been doing this dating song and dance for a while now, but they haven’t been seen together in public for a long ass time and it’s been claimed that they decided to split because they have very different views on Hollywood life – basically that Eva wants to get her swerve on in the limelight and Ryan isn’t all that bothered about that showbiz mumbo jumbo.

From E! Online:

Despite new reports which claim the couple, who were first romantically linked in September 2011, called it quits over the holidays, Eva’s rep tells E! News the latest breakup reports are just another round of rumors.

Sorry, not buying it – I wanna see the receipts! It’s easy to keep telling the press all is well to keep interest up in paparazzi following her around hoping for a sighting of the pair of them, etc. I mean, look – it’s no one’s business who’s dating whom or any of that bullshit, but don’t try to play dumb, just come clean with it!

Of course, I could be wrong here and they could be totally loved up and unable to get enough of each other… but my money’s on their single status.
