Maria Sharapova gets to keep her sponsorships with Nike, Evian & Head

As we discussed yesterday, Maria Sharapova received a two-year ban on professional tennis after she admitted (after she tested positive) to using a banned substance. Sharapova’s version of the verdict is that the ITF found that she did not intentionally use banned substances, that it was all some big misunderstanding. But if you read the full decision – you can see the PDF file of the decision here – you might realize that the ITF investigated Sharapova thoroughly and they had many good reasons for implementing the two-year ban. Still, most people aren’t going to delve that deeply into it, especially because Sharapova is going to appeal the decision and she’s still fronting like she really didn’t do anything wrong. What’s surprising is that so many of Sharapova’s sponsors aren’t delving too deeply into the ITF’s decision either. Many of the sponsors are sticking with her. Shock of shocks. Maria Sharapova has found support from sponsors after being given a two-year suspension for failing a drugs test at the Australian Open. Sharapova has vowed to fight the ban, announced by the International Tennis Federation on Wednesday, after she tested positive for prohibited substance meldonium and high-profile sponsors Nike, Head and Evian are standing by the Russian, with Nike lifting the suspension they imposed on their contract when news of her failed drugs test emerged in March. At the time of the failed test, the sportswear company said it was putting its eight-year, $70m deal on hold. But in a statement on Wednesday night, it said that it had decided to continue working with Sharapova. “The ITF Tribunal has found that Maria did not intentionally break its rules. Maria has always made her position clear, has apologised for her mistake and is now appealing the length of the ban,” read Nike’s statement. “Based on the decision of the ITF and their factual findings, we hope to see Maria back on court and will continue to partner with her.” Sharapova’s racket provider Head never wavered in its support of her, citing her as a “role model and woman of integrity” at the time of her failed test and proceeding to extend her deal. On Thursday, Evian said in a statement: “The ITF tribunal concluded that Maria Sharapova’s contravention was not intentional. Following this announcement, Evian has decided to maintain its long-lasting relationship with the champion.” Two of Sharapova’s other sponsors, watchmaker Tag Heuer and luxury car brand Porsche, have been less supportive. Porsche suspended activities with Sharapova following her failed test, and will now wait for the verdict to her appeal to the Court of Arbitration to Sport. The company said in a statement: “We have taken note of the recent International Tennis Federation ruling in the case of Maria Sharapova and are especially aware that it was decided that she was not accused of intentionally violating the World Anti-Doping Code. As Maria will appeal the decision, we will continue to keep all activities with her on hold until the final judgement has been reached.” Tag Heuer announced in March it had decided not to renew Sharapova’s contract, but has not ruled out working with her again in the future. Cosmetics brand Avon are also severing ties with Sharapova but insist that is not because of her doping ban. A spokesperson said: “Avon’s relationship with Maria Sharapova was a limited engagement that focused on one of our fragrances. The engagement is set to expire and we had not planned to extend this relationship regardless of the current situation.” [From The Guardian] The biggest deal was Nike, because that’s her most lucrative contract, and I’m absolutely shocked that they’re sticking with her. While Sharapova has always been more of a model than a professional tennis player, surely it’s bad business for an athleticswear company to continue spending tens of millions of dollars on an athlete banned from her sport following a thorough investigation? Surely it would just be easier for Nike to sever ties with Sharapova – for good cause, mind you – and start over with another player? And of course there’s a larger conversation to be had about privilege and what the reaction would have been if one of the Williams sisters had tested positive. The CFDAs were held last night in New York. I generally find the CFDAs kind of boring, fashion-wise. It’s not the Met Gala and it’s not the Oscars. Some ladies try to do something different, but most people just look vaguely nice and not particularly noteworthy. Take the Olsen sisters – we’ve seen Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen look like Victorian ghosts a million times before. The only difference is that at the CFDAs, they dressed their little sister Elizabeth in The Row and now she looks like a Victorian ghost now too. More photos… Stephanie Sokolinski (Soko!!) looking tired in Gucci. It really is about styling with this woman, and I really, really want to take away her pink-brown eye makeup. The dress is fine (and it suits her) but I think she would look better with different hair and makeup. Adriana Lima in Marc Jacobs. I like that she wore pants. This outfit is nice. Riley Keough in Proenza Schouler. I’m actually not a fan of Proenza Schouler, I think the clothes usually look overworked and fashion-student-y. But this was one of my favorite dresses at the event. Jessica Chastain in Prabal Gurung. Love the dress, hate the styling. Chastain was doing so well, and I really thought she had gotten some better hair and makeup people. But maybe not. Because she should never, ever do her hair like this. Jennifer Hudson in Prabal Gurung. Pretty dress, but it feels too big and heavy for this event. Blac Chyna is pregnant & pissed off at the Kardashians for leaking that info

Rob Kardashian and Blac Chyna got engaged back in April. At the time, it seemed like a sudden move. And while I would never dare suggest that this is just a reality-show version of a shotgun marriage, that’s exactly what it looks like. On Friday, Blac Chyna and Rob confirmed that they are expecting their first child together. The baby will be Rob’s first overall, and Chyna’s second – she’s also mom to son King Cairo, whose father is Tyga (Kylie Jenner’s boyfriend). Chyna’s rep confirmed the pregnancy far and wide, telling media outlets: “I can confirm she’s pregnant and of course she’s happy.” But of course there’s already drama. People Magazine also noted in a later post that Chyna and Rob were not expecting to announce the news on Friday – they wanted to do it today, Sunday, for Mother’s Day. Chyna’s rep once again went to People and said: “She would have preferred to have announced it on Mother’s Day herself, but her hand was forced.” Who was “forcing” her hand? The Kardashian clan. Apparently, someone (or multiple someones) leaked the pregnancy info to media outlets on Friday, just to get at Chyna… maybe. I find it interesting that her rep is going on the record to People Mag just to stir the sh-t. As it turns out, Chyna has been a Kardashian all along, you know? She fits right in with the K-klan. People Mag also ran several positive, exclusive stories about the pregnancy and how Rob is elated about becoming a father, especially considering he lost his own father at such a young age. There’s also some insidery info about how the Kardashian-Jenner clan reacted to the news – go here to read. Apparently, Kris Jenner is not thrilled, and the Kardashian sisters are just sort of shell-shocked. Sources also say that Kim is already coming around, basically because she doesn’t see the point in starting a war with Rob and Chyna. Interestingly enough, in this week’s Life & Style, sources note that Rob is getting a bigger paycheck for Keeping Up with the Kardashians this season. For several seasons now, Rob has been in the wind, barely making appearances and not really engaging with the various storylines of the show. But if you’ve been watching this new season (currently airing), you might have noticed that Rob’s storyline is really dominating the show. So let me ask you… was that the plan all along? ???? Elizabeth Olsen won’t buy a house in LA because the paparazzi are ‘crippling’

Elizabeth Olsen covers the latest issue of Elle Canada. I’m not loving the editorial, but that’s mostly because I don’t think Olsen was well-served by the magazine’s stylists. In my opinion, she looks better in very clean styles and more natural, barely-there makeup. Elle Canada overloaded her with boho clothes and pink lipstick. As for the interview, she comes across a bit better in this piece than she did in her recent Times Style magazine piece. But there’s still something that bugs me: it’s a feeling of “are you really as famous as you think you are?” The way she complains about the paparazzi and the lengths she goes to in maintaining her “privacy,” you’d think she was Angelina Jolie or, hell, Blake Lively. It just doesn’t seem to match up to Olsen’s actual level of fame. Although, to be fair to her, she’s been dealing with crazy Tom Hiddleston-fans for more than a year, so maybe she does need to be careful. You can read the full interview here. Some highlights: She wants to be low-key: “A lot of the time in my life, I try not to take up space—I just want to disappear into a wall. And then eventually, when I’m around people I feel confident with, I’ll take up more space.” Moving between Marvel films & indies: “The only thing I care about is if the team is great, the script is good and the character is someone I can connect to in my gut. After that, it’s just a fun f–king job. I don’t have any regrets—I was just so happy to be working—but I was forcing myself not to give power to ‘the system.’ But the system does have power, and I’ve learned how to use it. It’s smarter than to ignore it.” She doesn’t want a social media presence: “I just have an old-school mindset. Also, girls I look up to, like Jennifer Lawrence, Rooney Mara and Alicia Vikander, don’t have it, and it hasn’t affected their careers remotely. I’d rather live as private a life as I can. I’m not trying to be a mysterious person, but I’d rather be seen as an actor from job to job. I’ve never lived my life trying to be an influencer; I’m happy keeping my own opinions for fun dinner conversation.” She won’t discuss her love life: Olsen says it’s just something that is “in her bones” and influenced heavily by her notoriously private older sisters. “From an outside point of view, people have an interest in people they’ve seen grow up. But no one in my family has ever cared to feed into that or make it more interesting than it is because, really, it’s not.” She doesn’t like fan mail either: “When I’m filming on location, our production office is listed and people send stuff. It makes me uncomfortable. I don’t want people to know what I’m up to or where I am.” She rents a house in LA & she has a roommate: “The moment I own a house, it becomes public knowledge,” she says, going on to describe the “crippling” nature of paparazzi in L.A., where, after being spotted, she won’t go home for several hours in case they follow her. “It’s pretty violating. At night when you can’t see anything because the flashes blind you, that’s really disconcerting.” [From Elle Canada] I understand just wanting to be a jobbing actress. I understand wanting to withhold part of yourself from the media. I even understand what she says about learning how to play the game and work “the system” to her advantage. But I feel like I’m hallucinating a little bit when she goes on and on about how she can’t own a house because then they know where you live and she’ll get pap’d every day. Maybe she’s really, really good at hiding out already, but there are RARELY candid photos of Olsen in LA or anywhere else. She gets photographed at premieres, media events and fashion events. She got pap’d in London when she went on a date with Tom Hiddleston last year. And beyond that… nothing. So is she really good at hiding out, or is she just not as famous as she thinks she is? Julia Roberts on staying in shape: ‘Remain calm, drink your water & be joyful’

The Cannes Film Festival starts next week, and Team USA is going to be pretty well-represented on the red carpet. In addition to the premiere of Woody Allen’s new movie, Café Society, Jodie Foster will be premiering her new film, Money Monster. Which means we’ll see Julia Roberts, George Clooney and probably Amal Clooney on the carpet. I’m genuinely excited about that. Julia tells InStyle – she’s the cover girl for June – that she might be wearing Givenchy, in which case it’s going to be HUGE… a huge disaster, that is, because Riccardo Tisci can’t design to save his life. But it will be great to see what Amal wears. Anyway, here are some highlights from Julia’s InStyle interview. On Jodie Foster: “Well, in my mind, she’s so scary, but really she’s so sweet… she’s so talented, notoriously brilliant. And she’s such a great actor. And really, she is very no-nonsense. She doesn’t think that there has to be some incredible, painful struggle to accomplish your goals. I thought she was crazy to be helming me and George—it’s like trying to keep puppies in a box.” Whether she’ll ever be on social media: “I think it’s like—what’s a good analogy? Listen, I don’t have my head in the sand. I’m aware of the different outlets, however you label them. It’s like people talking about a TV show: I can be perfectly aware of the TV show and the story, but it doesn’t mean I watch it. I have other friends who watch it, and they tell me about it. I mean, we were talking about Instagram. Everyone has Instagram on their phone. And I just, yeah, [if I had it] I would be looking at it all the time.” What she learned from her mom: “One of the greatest things she ever did for me … I remember asking her—when I had three kids under 3 years old and just felt like I was running in a thousand directions at once—“How on earth did you raise all of us? You worked full-time, and you did all these things.” She could have said, “Well, you know, you just do your best.” But she said, “Darling, it’s called day care. I dropped you and your sisters off at 7:30 in the morning, and I would pick you up at 4 in the afternoon.” But it didn’t feel like that to me. I didn’t feel like I was a dropped-off person who didn’t see her mom all day. I just felt completely part of her life, and she was part of mine. And that’s the magic trick: to make people feel that they’re with you when they’re not.” Whether she ever just goes shopping: “I do from time to time. It just kind of strikes at moments. The thing I never understood about fashion is that you put something on and you look and feel great, and then you put it on again 10 days later and it’s terrible.” How she stays in shape: “I feel like if I knew all the things to do [in terms of exercise], I would probably look like I was put together with tape. I would just go crazy. So I think, better just to remain calm, drink your water, get your sleep and be joyful. We definitely try to eat mindfully. As I always say to my kids, ‘You have to eat the good stuff to get the good stuff.’” Her first time at Cannes: “I’ve kind of avoided it. I mean, the first time I ever went to Asia was for a movie, Eat, Pray, Love. I’m a late bloomer.” [From InStyle, People] I always think Julia Roberts and Jennifer Aniston have the same kind of reaction to the rise of social media: social media came after their heydays, and they don’t really want to bother engaging in it. Surprisingly, Gwyneth Paltrow was in the same kind of boat, but she embraced her online presence and now she’s built an entirely new career out of it. Now, unlike other social-media-shy celebrities, I don’t get the feeling that Julia looks down on it at all. Like, she’s not judging it. She’s just not engaging with it at all. Blac Chyna: ARRESTED For Public Intoxication, Booted Off Plane at the Airport!

Tyga’s baby mama and Rob Kardashian’s controversial girlfriend Blac Chyna was arrested at the airport earlier today in Austin, Texas. After allegedly getting drunk and becoming absolutely belligerent on a flight, the notorious stripper and Kardashian foe got popped in ATX. TMZ reports that she was in Austin-Bergstrom airport en route from LAX to London, and on her way to her connecting flight, she got loud. Then louder, and louder, and more obnoxious. It’s not clear why, but she stormed toward the gate and began screaming at an airline employee, calling her a “Nasty ass bitch.” Police were alerted to her shenanigans, followed her onto the plane, arrested her on the spot and dragged her drunk ass off. Witnesses say Blac was “heavily intoxicated” on the plane, “fighting” with a flight attendant and generally acting “like a drunken fool.” According to a passenger, she was screaming at one point, “Y’all got no respect for me. I gotta tie my shoes. Let me tie my Yeezys.” Somewhere, ‘Ye has to be smiling a little. Chyna, who has been ALL OVER the news this week thanks to her latest romance, was crying as she was handcuffed and escorted out. Interestingly, Blac was at LAX gushing about Rob and his sisters just a few hours prior. Free booze in first class gets you every time. Also today, knowing the lightning rod was headed out of town, Kris Jenner went to Chyna’s house to smack some sense into her only son. While Kardashian loves his new girl and swears this isn’t a “revenge romance” of sorts, Blac’s arrest is only going to boost Kris’ argument. The 27-year-old was booked for public intoxication following her disorderly conduct on what was a brief but memorable Texas layover. As of this post, Chyna was still detained in jail. Kylie Jenner is ‘livid, super betrayed’ about Blac Chyna & Rob Kardashian

One of my favorite things to come out of Kylie Jenner’s “transformation” over the past few years is that people started calling her White Chyna. That, to me, is hilarious. Tyga famously dumped his long-time girlfriend/fiancee/baby-mama Blac Chyna for Kylie when she was underage. That was around the time that Kylie began her transformation too, and by the way… she does seem to be “stealing” Blac Chyna’s look. I’m telling you, this whole thing is very Brandi Glanville/LeAnn Rimes. Especially when the jumpoff (Kylie) is single-white-female-ing the original (Blac Chyna). Thus, we get White Chyna. Anyway, as we discussed earlier, Rob Kardashian and Blac Chyna are sort of happening now. Blac Chyna posted a photo of Rob’s arm draped around her and the Twitterverse exploded. Blac Chyna is no longer tight with the Kardashians, but they were all friendly at one point, so Blac Chyna really knows what she’s doing here. And I still think it’s really funny/shady. So how does Kylie feel about this situation, with her half-brother hooking up with the ex-partner of her current boyfriend? Kylie Jenner and half-brother Rob Kardashian are on less than good terms following news he’s been romantically linked to Blac Chyna. “Kylie is livid,” a source tells PEOPLE. “She feels super betrayed and can’t understand why someone in her own family would stab her in the back like that.” Blac Chyna, whose birth name is Angela Renée White, is Tyga’s ex-fiancée, and together they have a son, King Cairo, 3. Jenner has been dating the 26-year-old rapper since late 2014, but the pair didn’t take their relationship public until last August when they went on a PDA-filled trip to celebrate her 18th birthday. And Blac Chyna’s bad blood with Jenner involves her famous sisters. The mother of one was once close friends with Kim Kardashian West, though the friendship appears no longer. In addition, Khloé Kardashian and Blac Chyna’s BFF Amber Rose have had many public feuds on Twitter regarding Jenner’s relationship with Tyga. Furthermore, Tyga and Blac Chyna aren’t the friendliest of exes – he lashed out at her on Instagram in September for allegedly spreading rumors that he couldn’t afford the Ferrari he bought Jenner for her 18th birthday in August. [From People] Ah, to be 18 years old and dumb as a rock. Of course Kylie is “livid” – that’s exactly how Blac Chyna wants her to feel. Blac Chyna manipulated this situation brilliantly if her aim was simply to get at Kylie (which it probably was). As for Rob… I don’t really understand how he doesn’t see that he’s being manipulated too. But maybe he’s okay with it because he has such a love-hate/passive-aggressive relationship with some members of his family. And you know he still lives with Khloe, right?
