Melissa McCarthy on her weight loss: ‘No trick, just super boring life’

Melissa McCarthy is promoting her new movie The Boss, which opens April 8. As I have mentioned, I am a big fan of Melissa since falling in love with her on Gilmore Girls. Of her movies, however, Spy is just about the only one I enjoyed. I am cautiously optimistic about The Boss though. If the trailers are to be believed, her character, Michelle Darnell, is a competent businessperson and the joke has nothing to do with weight. Her character Sookie’s weight on Gilmore Girls was never a joke; it wasn’t until she went mainstream Hollywood that her weight was brought front and center. Now that Melissa has lost 50 pounds (brava to her) her weight is an even bigger focus and everyone wants to know her secret. According to Melissa, the secret isn’t that sexy: Actress Melissa McCarthy channels a foul-mouthed, over-the-top Martha Stewart caricature in her new movie “The Boss,” but it is her personal transformation that has everyone talking. The 45-year-old actress looked incredible at a press junket for the film. She lost a reported 50 pounds, and revealed there is no big secret to her weight loss. She told “Extra’s” Charissa Thompson it is actually her lifestyle that contributed to the change. “No trick, nothing to tell, just super boring life. You bring it real down, you don’t do anything fun and you go to bed at 7:30 — that’s the trick.” She went on to say her husband, Ben Falcone, will ask, “Is it five and are you in jammies?” to which she responds, “I’m gonna call them loungewear.” [From Extra TV] Melissa is accepting compliments graciously but shies away from any real weight-loss discussion. I can appreciate her position as she has often emphasized that weight doesn’t really matter to her. She told Rolling Stone, in 2014, “I could eat healthier, I could drink less. I should be learning another language and working out more, but I’m just always saying, ‘Ah, I could get hit by a bus tomorrow.” I get the sense that she does not want to be another celebrity who loses weight and all of a sudden the only thing that matters is weight loss. Melissa is wearing her Seven7 clothing line during this press junket. I really liked a few pieces from her Holiday Line, but I think she does bottoms better than tops. The line is doing well, however, and Melissa continues to put emphasis on it being an all-inclusive line, joining the voices wishing to dismiss “plus-size” as a descriptor. We just saw photos from her royal-themed baby shower, which some of you thought was gauche and others found sweet. Chrissy’s photoshoot theme for Self was motocross, which was clever. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a motocross theme for a women’s magazine, fitness or otherwise, apart from the occasional motorcycle as prop. They seem to have done the shoot when she was early in her pregnancy and hadn’t popped yet, or they Photoshopped her, it’s likely a bit of both. In the piece they say that Chrissy won’t discuss her due date as she’s trying to throw off the paparazzi. (Which is bizarre to me as she seems to enjoy them, but I get that she wants to protect her newborn.) They also talk about her cookbook and cooking blog, her TV hosting gigs, how busy she is and how she seems to get in a lot of twitter fights. I know Chrissy isn’t everyone’s favorite celebrity, she grates a little, but she does know how to hustle I’ll give her that. Plus she and John Legend are genuinely in love and coupled up, you can tell. On her approach to social media If I’m passionate about something, I’ll say it and deal with the consequences later. On her difficulty conceiving and going through IVF The big question was why this wasn’t working for us when I was young and he was healthy. I thought, People get pregnant by accident all the time! How does this happen? Emotionally, it could be really hard. One of the things that saved us is that we never did that real fertility thing, where you’re looking at the ovulation clock and saying, ‘Honey, get home; we have to do it right now.’ John would say, ‘Let’s never be that couple that has to schedule sex, where we put it on the calendar and say, OK, this is our night.’ So before we did IVF, even if we went a few days or a week, our feeling was, it’s cool, who cares? On being photographed at the beach when she was going through IVF I looked horrible, totally not myself. Then to not be able to say what it was, it sucked. On being both a foodie and a model It always bothered me when someone would interview a model and say, ‘What do you do to stay in shape?’ and she would say, ‘I love to eat pizza; I love to indulge.’ I’ve always been the first one to say, ‘Bulls—! No you don’t.’ So I’ve been hyperaware of that, and I waited years to write a cookbook because I wanted people to know I really do love food.” [She eats what she wants but stays active] I like having that balance. She’s worried about their new arrival but John is laid back He’s been wonderful. He has a big family with nieces and nephews, and he actually knows more than I do about kids. It’s going to be very sexy to see this new side of him… I’ve truly never been alone with a kid. I don’t think I’ve changed a diaper! I’m like, how many times a day do they go?… I’m a worrier, and he’s very laid-back. I am the crazier one in the relationship, and he’s more relaxed, for sure. She wants four kids, one after the other I think I’ll probably be pregnant all through my 30s,. I’ve always pictured everyone around the table for the holidays and together once a week. It’ll be heartbreaking if it doesn’t end up happening, but hopefully it will. We’ve got some embryos on hold. Four [kids] is good, I think. And then, maybe a dog after. She reads comments on online recipes in her spare time and her love of cooking came from watching her Thai mom improvise recipes. As for her interview, I came away from it with a better understanding of her. Chrissy seems both Type A, which I can respect, and rather open and honest while seeking attention. It’s the last couple of things which make her a bit overexposed. Chrissy is in our face a lot, but she’s somehow just as well known as her pop star husband, and that’s a feat for a model. Oh and I love what she said about models claiming they love to indulge. They may, but their idea of indulging is not the same as the rest of us. There were several big pre-Oscar events in LA last night, and I really hope the low-turnout at these events is indicative of the turnout for the Oscars. The two biggest events were The Film is GREAT reception (which is for British films and British actors nominated this year) and the annual Women In Film pre-Oscar cocktail party. Alicia Vikander wore the same Erdem dress to the WIF event and The Film is GREAT reception. I was set to side-eye Alicia’s presence at a British-film gathering, but then I remembered that The Danish Girl is a British-financed film with a British director and British costars. So… okay. It’s worth noting that her hokey “posh British” accent is really, really distracting in The Danish Girl. Here’s Idris Elba at the Film is GREAT reception, then he went out partying in Hollywood. Idris will be attending the Spirit Awards later today, and…? He’s not on the Oscar presenter list, but maybe he’ll come out for some of the Oscar parties. If he does come out for the parties, he should rethink the hat. Here’s Jennifer Jason Leigh at the Women in Film event. I feel a little bit sad about JJL – in another year, with a different campaign, this might have been her moment to win. I don’t like her ensemble here, it looks cheap. Maria Bello at the WIF event – this ensemble is absolutely tragic. Michelle Monaghan in Erdem at the WIF event… the “sheer dickie” part of this needs to GO. And finally, here’s Cate Blanchett at her own separate event for SK-II #ChangeDestiny Forum. She’s the face of SK-II (a skincare company), so I assume this was just a pre-Oscar event the company set up to promote their product AND Cate. Sofia Vergara won’t complain about diversity: ‘I’ve been treated like a queen’

Some people are tired of Sofia Vergara. I’m not. I got a little bit tired of her a few years back, but I fell back in love with her during the drama last year with her ex, Nick Loeb, a drama which has no end in sight. Sofia covers the new issue of The Edit, and she talks about a lot of the same stuff: accepting who you are, her giant rack, her hair, her red carpet styling and more. But she has thoughts about other stuff too, like diversity in entertainment and playing a stereotype. You can read the full piece here. Some highlights: Stereotypes are not always bad: “I’m not afraid of them, and they don’t have to be bad, either. I mean, Gloria is an amazing character: a really good woman with this hilarious accent, so why criticize her for being a stereotype? Plus, all the Latinas I know are loud, they dress sexy and are really involved with their families: that’s Gloria!” She’s not Zen about aging: “Watching myself age on screen is awful! There is nothing more disturbing than watching an episode of Modern Family from the first season, then one from seven years later. It just makes me want to kill myself, but what can I do? I’ll be sad when the wolf whistles stop. I’m already sad that men have started calling me ‘Señora’. I get really pissed off: ‘What? It’s Señorita!’” How she’s changed in her 40s: “Back in my mum’s era, 40 was considered old, but now I don’t think it is. You have to accept that you can look beautiful, but in a different way. Nowadays I don’t do miniskirts and low-cut tops: it’s one or the other. I don’t do shorts or pink anymore, and I’ve softened my eye makeup. In Colombia, once women hit 40, they automatically cut their hair short. I used to think I would do that too, but when it came to it I thought, ‘Why should I f***ing cut my hair? It makes you look older!’” Motherhood: “I became a mother very young – at 20 – so I feel like I’ve been a mother my whole life, but I love that. Now that I’m 43 and my son is 23, it’s funny to see some of my girlfriends raising young kids. In the US, women postpone motherhood, but in Latin America most of my friends have kids my son’s age. I wouldn’t mind another child: my husband is younger than me and he wants kids so we’re trying to figure out what we’re going to do. The idea of doing it all again doesn’t scare me but, hey, it’s not like it’s going to happen naturally, is it?” Complaints about diversity: “I’m really not one to complain. I mean, seriously, how dare I! Here I am on prime-time television with this stupid accent, I can’t trash anyone. It would be so ungrateful of me because, trust me, I’ve been treated like a queen. Of course [the opportunities] can’t compare to an American or Caucasian woman’s, but things are changing. The problem is not the networks or directors: it’s that there aren’t enough writers creating things for Latinos. Once we have more Latinos writing, that’s when things may really start to change…” Her breasts: “My body has changed with age. People will often say that I wear the same thing on the red carpet, but I know my body: it’s very voluptuous and I’ve got the boobs of a stripper. They’re a 32DDD and because they’re real, they’re everywhere, so I need my dresses to have structure – and under armor. There is so much going on under my dresses that I bleed at the end of award ceremonies. In ten years I think it would be good to have a reduction. I don’t think it’s even going to be an option not to [have surgery], because I’m going to start having back pains. I wouldn’t make them too small – just enough that I don’t end up looking like an old stripper.” How she feels about being objectified: “I’ve never understood why women get so offended. I just don’t believe in all that drama, which is why I’ve made a whole joke out of it. I am secure enough not to take it all that seriously, and I like to laugh at myself.” [From The Edit] I wouldn’t hold it against her if she did complain about diversity, because she seriously toiled away, looking for a break for more than a decade. Once she had a hit, she leveraged that into her own empire through her own hard work. As for the other stuff… here are my Hot Takes: you don’t have to cut your hair when you hit 40, but I disagree that a short haircut makes everyone look older. I don’t think it’s bad idea to say breast reduction might be in the future for Sofia: it might happen. Also, if your dresses make you bleed, you should choose different dresses! Blac Chyna: ARRESTED For Public Intoxication, Booted Off Plane at the Airport!

Tyga’s baby mama and Rob Kardashian’s controversial girlfriend Blac Chyna was arrested at the airport earlier today in Austin, Texas. After allegedly getting drunk and becoming absolutely belligerent on a flight, the notorious stripper and Kardashian foe got popped in ATX. TMZ reports that she was in Austin-Bergstrom airport en route from LAX to London, and on her way to her connecting flight, she got loud. Then louder, and louder, and more obnoxious. It’s not clear why, but she stormed toward the gate and began screaming at an airline employee, calling her a “Nasty ass bitch.” Police were alerted to her shenanigans, followed her onto the plane, arrested her on the spot and dragged her drunk ass off. Witnesses say Blac was “heavily intoxicated” on the plane, “fighting” with a flight attendant and generally acting “like a drunken fool.” According to a passenger, she was screaming at one point, “Y’all got no respect for me. I gotta tie my shoes. Let me tie my Yeezys.” Somewhere, ‘Ye has to be smiling a little. Chyna, who has been ALL OVER the news this week thanks to her latest romance, was crying as she was handcuffed and escorted out. Interestingly, Blac was at LAX gushing about Rob and his sisters just a few hours prior. Free booze in first class gets you every time. Also today, knowing the lightning rod was headed out of town, Kris Jenner went to Chyna’s house to smack some sense into her only son. While Kardashian loves his new girl and swears this isn’t a “revenge romance” of sorts, Blac’s arrest is only going to boost Kris’ argument. The 27-year-old was booked for public intoxication following her disorderly conduct on what was a brief but memorable Texas layover. As of this post, Chyna was still detained in jail.
