Courtney Love: Taylor Swift ‘is not important…she’s not interesting as an artist’

Courtney Love is the white Azealia Banks – she always has a lot of derogatory sh-t to say about other women, always has tons of “advice” for more-successful women, but ultimately is nothing more than yet another critic who should examine their own sexism and prejudices. Courtney moved to London in 2019 and she’s currently promoting a new eight-part series for BBC Radio 6. The series is called Courtney Love’s Women, where she explores the women in music she actually likes or respects. She won’t include Taylor Swift, Beyonce or Lana del Rey by the sound of it. Love chatted with the Standard and the Swifties have already turned their wrath on her. Some highlights:

She wants to be known as a bitch: ‘People used to say that I was so difficult. They said I was disagreeable. Yes, I am completely disagreeable and I’m never going to apologise for that. I always wanted to be known as a bitch. Being liked was never my thing. Kurt wanted to be liked but not me. He was able to hide behind me, but then I got hated. Then Kurt died, and the hatred towards me reached a completely new level. I did not plan for that. I’m all for taking my wiener out on stage, like Jim Morrison did. If I had a wiener and I was drunk enough, I would have totally taken it out, just like Jim. I had a bitch capacity and I was cool with not being liked. I saw Bob Dylan in Don’t Look Back and he didn’t want to be liked and I thought, yeah, I want to be like that.’

Women are becoming cliched in music: ‘It’s great that there are so many successful women in the music industry, but lots of them are becoming a cliché. Now, every successful woman is cloned, so there is just too much music. They’re all the same. If you play something on Spotify, you get bombarded with a lot of stuff that’s exactly the same. I mean, I like the idea of Beyoncé doing a country record because it’s about Black women going into spaces where previously only white women have been allowed, not that I like it much. As a concept, I love it. I just don’t like her music.’

On Jann Wenner & the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame: ‘Five old white guys, right, who have apparently never heard of Kate Bush. I mean, really? Jann Wenner should be put out to pasture. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is a joke. You know, some guy takes a girl out and tries to kiss her and she doesn’t feel like it, and he gets his whole career ruined. But Jann Wenner is allowed to say that Black people and women weren’t intellectual enough to be included in his book of rock ’n’ roll masters? Eat me, you f***!’

The female artists she actually likes: She sings the praises of Patti Smith (whom she listened to in juvenile hall at the age of 11), Nina Simone, PJ Harvey (‘The first four albums, then I’m done’), Julie London and Joni Mitchell (‘The early albums, not the experimental s***’). She likes Deborah Harry, having listened to her when she was in a foster home. She had to quote scripture in order to get breakfast and she played Blondie’s ‘Call Me’ instead. ‘I wasn’t a superfan, but she was very beautiful.’

Taylor & Lana: Other women don’t come across so well, and she positively hates the idea of Taylor Swift. ‘Taylor is not important. She might be a safe space for girls, and she’s probably the Madonna of now, but she’s not interesting as an artist.’ And she’s even tiring a little of Lana Del Rey: ‘I haven’t liked Lana since she covered a John Denver song, and I think she should really take seven years off. Up until ‘Take Me Home Country Roads’ I thought she was great. When I was recording my new album, I had to stop listening to her as she was influencing me too much.’

On Madonna: ‘I don’t like her and she doesn’t like me. I loved Desperately Seeking Susan, but for the city of New York as much as her.’

[From The Evening Standard]

Here’s the thing – if I’m being generous, I would say that Love is an adequate music historian and she can talk about the brilliant female artists who created music pre-2000, let’s say. But what’s coming across here is not that Love is some credible truth-teller of modern music, it’s that she’s old and out of touch. People are like, well Courtney Love’s brand is straight-forward, she even says that she’s fine with being mean/bitchy. While that’s part of it, I think the bigger thing is that she doesn’t “get” it. She doesn’t “get” Beyonce, she doesn’t “get” Lana, she doesn’t “get” Taylor Swift. She’s trying to be an edgelord but she’s lost her edge.

Brad Pitt Courtney Love

Courtney Love doesn’t ‘like the way Brad Pitt does business or wields his power’

Last week, Courtney Love was interviewed by Marc Maron on the WTF Podcast. Her interview went viral because Courtney Love is… Courtney Love. But there was a particular moment which made headlines all over the place, which was Love’s story about dating Edward Norton in the late 1990s, and Norton getting Love cast as Marla in Fight Club. According to Love, Brad Pitt fought her casting because Love wouldn’t sign over the rights to Pitt to make a Kurt Cobain bio-pic. Love’s version of events is that Pitt got her fired and he harassed her for years about getting the rights to make a Cobain bio-pic. Well, Pitt’s people denied Love’s story and then she doubled down in a post-podcast statement:

According to Courtney Love, she got fired from “Fight Club” after rejecting Brad Pitt’s pitch for a Kurt Cobain movie. Love said she “went nuclear” on Pitt after he and director Gus Van Sant approached her about making a Kurt Cobain movie. Love and Cobain married in 1992 and they were together until his death in 1994 at age 27. Van Sant eventually made the Cobain-inspired drama “Last Days,” starring Michael Pitt, but Love said this wasn’t the project Pitt and the director wanted her approval on.

“I wouldn’t let Brad play Kurt,” Love said. “I went nuclear. I don’t do Faust. Who the f–k do you think are?” Love added that she told Pitt the following: “I don’t know if I trust you and I don’t know that your movies are for profit. They’re really good social justice movies, but…if you don’t get me, you kind of don’t get Kurt, and I don’t feel like you do, Brad.”

It was after rejecting Pitt’s Cobain movie that Love was then fired from “Fight Club,” she said. According to Love, Norton broke the news to her. The two were romantic partners at the time. “He starts sobbing,” Love told Maron. “And he was like, ‘I don’t have the power!’”

A source close to the film confirmed to Variety that Love did audition for the role in “Fight Club” but said she was not offered the part. “You cannot be fired for a job you didn’t get,” the source added. “It’s common knowledge that roles are not decided by other actors but by the director.”

In an Instagram post on Friday, Love stood by her comments on Maron’s podcast, writing that “every word” she said is “factual.”

“Brad pushed me a bridge too far. I don’t like the way he does business or wields his power. It’s a simple fact, and it started during the production of ‘Fight Club,’” Love wrote. “It’s a movie. Indeed, I passed on better roles than [sic] that. Who cares? The point is Brad kept on stalking me about Kurt.” Love went on to claim that she rejected Pitt’s pitch for a Cobain biopic again in 2020, and felt she “was not heard” and “ignored” during the meeting.

“I had no plans to bring it up with Marc Maron but up it came,” Love wrote. “I told the story because I felt Pitt would not stop pursuing Kurt — unless I said it in public…. I don’t want Brad to be pissed off at me and become his resentment. I want him to do better. I’m not into assault. Cmon brother Pitt. I wish you well, truly. If he’s mad at me, that’s his problem. I enjoy him as a movie star immensely. Not so much as a biopic producer.”

[From Variety]

I think it’s probably more than possible that Love is telling the truth about most – if not all – of this. It was well-documented at the time that Pitt was interested in doing a Cobain bio-pic. It’s true that Love got approached by many different actors, directors and producers over the years. It’s true that Love had/has a good radar for who’s full of sh-t in Hollywood (she was saying sh-t about Harvey Weinstein years and years before he was officially outed). Given what we know now about the sh-tty ways in which Brad Pitt does business, does anyone have an issue believing that Pitt tried to bully Love into giving him the rights? I don’t. I also think that there really has been some kind of shift in how Pitt is perceived and spoken about.

Courtney Love Olivia Rodrigo

Courtney Love accused Olivia Rodrigo of ‘copying’ Hole’s prom queen imagery

Olivia Rodrigo is the biggest thing to happen to the music industry since… Taylor Swift, probably. Or maybe Lorde or Billie Eilish. Olivia’s “Drivers License” became a huge hit, and people are obsessed with her full album, Sour (and the second single, “Deja Vu”). Olivia made a concert film called Sour Prom, and the promotional images for the concert film have Olivia dressed up like a sad prom queen, complete with messy, running eye makeup and a tiara. Well, Courtney Love believes that Olivia has copied the look from Hole’s album cover for Live Through This, which featured Courtney as a sad prom queen too. Courtney is demanding Olivia send her flowers and a note of apology for it.

Courtney Love has called out Olivia Rodrigo for allegedly “stealing an original idea” from her. The former Hole singer brought to light the similarities between the cover art of the band’s 1994 album, Live Through This, and Rodrigo’s new promotional photos for her upcoming Sour Prom Concert Film on social media.

“Spot the difference! #twinning! @oliviarodrigo,” Love, whose name was trending on Twitter throughout the day on Sunday (June 27), first quipped on Instagram on Thursday (June 24). She included a winking face and two queen emojis. Rodrigo left a single comment on Love’s post: “love u and live through this sooooo much.”

“Olivia – you’re welcome. My favorite florist is in Notting Hill, London! Dm me for deets! I look forward to reading your note!” Love replied to the “Drivers License” singer. Billboard reached out to representatives for both Love and Rodrigo for further comment on Sunday. Love’s mention of flowers and a note was in reference to thoughts she was simultaneously leaving on her official Facebook page, where she continued the conversation about Rodrigo over the weekend.

“it was rude of her , and geffen not to ask myself or Ellen von unwerth . It’s happened my whole career so I d c . But manners is manners !” Love said in reply to one follower on Facebook. Geffen Records is Rodrigo’s current record label, and Unwerth was the photographer behind the cover of Live Through This. In another Facebook comment, Love said, “Stealing an original idea and not asking permission is rude. There’s no way to be elegant about it . I’m not angry . It happens all the time to me.”

“But this was bad form,” she noted. “That’s not bullying or bomb throwing . This persons music has nothing to do with my life . Possibly never will . It was rude And I gave every right to stick up for my work . Don’t gatekeep me ! I’m honorable as f— to my fellow artists , and I expect the same .”

“It’s on GEFFEN,” Love added in another comment thread. “I’ve informed her I await her flowers snd note . I sure hope it’s long . Does Disney teach kids reading and writing ? God knows. Let’s see . Yes this is rude. Rage inducing ? Honey if I had a dollar for everyone this happens ? I’d be real rich !”

[From Billboard]

People were mad about this and they were arguing on Twitter over the weekend. Before this happened, Olivia had posted some “inspo” photos on her IG Stories and one of the inspos was the film version of Carrie, with Sissy Spacek as the bullied, telekinetic prom queen. Carrie was clearly one of the main inspirations for Courtney as well, and it’s not like Courtney “owns” the prom queen visual. That being said… while Courtney was rude, I actually think she has somewhat of a point? It’s clear that the Hole cover probably was one of Olivia’s inspirations too? It’s clear from Olivia’s comment on Love’s IG that Olivia is familiar with the album, so we can’t really argue “it was clearly way before Olivia’s time.” IDK. The Live Through This cover was iconic. Live Through This was released in 1994. Olivia was born in 2003. Just FYI.

18 Celebrities You Didn’t Know Were Convicted Felons

Who knew Christian Slater was a convicted felon? And what exactly did 50 Cent to to get himself in trouble with the law?

From felony drug charges, weapons charges, and even assault, here’s a surprising list of celebrities who are also convicted felons.

1. Christian Slater

Christian slater
It’s hard to believe, but Christian Slater got into a LOT of trouble back in the day, including drunk driving, trying to board a plan with a concealed weapon in his luggage, and assaulting a police officer.

2. Stephen Fry

Stephen fry
Stephen Fry actually once spent three months in prison for credit card fraud. Who knew? He was only 17 at the time, but he made the bad decision of going on a spending spree with a family friend’s card. Whoops.

3. 50 Cent

50 cent
50 Cent got into major trouble when he tried to sell drugs to an undercover police officer. That was one of two times he was charged with felony drug possession.

4. Yasmin Bleeth

Yasmin bleeth
It’s true. The Baywatch babe was charged with felony drug possession in 2001. She was put on probation and sentenced to 100 hours of community service.

5. Mark Wahlberg

Mark wahlberg
Also known as “Marky Mark,” Mark Wahlberg was put in prison on charges of assault and attempted murder when he was younger. That all seems hard to believe now, doesn’t it?

6. Chris Brown

Chris brown
Okay, so maybe you did know about this one, but we still needed to include it. Chris Brown was convicted of felony assault, but managed to get a plea deal to keep himself out of prison.

Rihanna topless

Rihanna got in trouble with Instagram for posting her nipple-exposing cover of French magazine Lui. Who cares about the boobies? What she really needs to be scolded for is that bucket hat.

Olivia Munn and Joel Kinnaman (my favourite celebrity couple that I kept forgetting existed) have split up.

-Damn. I usually hate giant diamond rings but George Clooney did Amal Alamuddin a solid with this emerald cut 7-carat sparkler.

Zac Efron opens up about joining AA and that fight on Skid Row in The Hollywood Reporters’ new cover story. Hmmm…

Ansel Elgort and Shailene Woodley are adorbs on the new EW cover. Practise pronouncing his name; that guy is going to be huge.

-In an upcoming episode of Late Night with Seth Meyers, Jennifer Lawrence reportedly reveals that she was so drunk at the Oscars that she puked on the stairs at Madonna’s after-party and Miley Cyrus chided her. It’s not a good sign when Miley is the sober one…

-Meanwhile, Miley‘s health crisis rages on, forcing her to reschedule another concert. At what point are we allowed to be legitimately concerned?

-Esquire wrote an article about why Anna Kendrick should take over the Late Late Show’s hosting gig, and she retweeted it and then commented on it. Does that mean she’s unofficially throwing her hat in the ring? ‘Cause she’d be awesome at it.

-I really liked this interview with Colin Hanks, especially the part where Method Man approaches him in the middle of it and he gets all flustered. “God, when Method Man says hello to you, everything goes right out the door. Sorry.”

Patton Oswalt and Billy Eichner play a game called “Does Shakira Know What This Is?,” which is as great as it sounds.

Andrew Garfield’s SNL promos are super promising and make me wish he’d do improv in the future.

Matt Bomer is coming to Toronto to premiere HBO’s The Normal Heart here. Time to dig out my stalking shoes…

Gwyneth Paltrow won’t be attending this year’s MET Gala — but because of scheduling issues, not because she totally slammed it last year.

Beyoncé sent 90 white roses to the family of one of her biggest fans in Australia, who died of leukemia at 15.

Naya Rivera‘s rep denied reports that she was fired from Glee over bad behavior and a feud with Lea Michele. Word has it her character is supposed to share a big number with Mercedes and Brittany in the May 13 finale, so we’ll soon see.

Baz Luhrmann is in talks to do an Elvis biopic, because duh.

James Franco, maybe this isn’t the best time to admit you made out with an underage Lindsay Lohan. Just sayin’.

-I’m actually really surprised that the 10-year anniversary of Mean Girls was such a big deal today. I mean, I love that movie, but wow. I also agree with this assessment that Lohan wasn’t as amazing in it as everyone lets on.

Diane Keaton proved on Fallon last night that she has no idea how to play beer pong – and it was adorable.

DL Hughley’s defense of Columbus Short is so very, very gross.

-When I saw this photo of Zoe Saldana I thought “who is that Jared Leto-meets-Jesus poser she’s with?” Turns out that’s her husband.

Lupita Nyong’o may not have made the Star Wars cut, but she’s doing ok. She’ll  be presenting at the CFDA Fashion Awards and attending the White House Correspondent’s Dinner. Now if only she could line up her next big role…

-I dig this article on why John Boyega should be the hero of the new Star Wars movie. I also like this one about whether or not a cool actor can survive the franchise with his cred in tact.

-Today, Seattle police released images of a note that Kurt Cobain kept in his wallet calling Courtney Love a “bitch with zits.”

Selena Gomez‘s camp wants you to know that she’s just friends with Orlando Bloom, ok?!

-Chuck alum Yvonne Strahovsky is taking over your TV set, one show at a time.

Louis CK swears he didn’t know that Letterman was actually going to retire when he made those episodes about it.

-These sketches of what Mad Men characters will look like in the ’80s are perfection. Also wonderful: someone wrote a song about every Mad Men final tracking shot.

Vincent Kartheiser says his friends call him Fruity Lavender, which is how we all should refer to him from now on.

Hugh Jackman is pretty sure he’s only got one more Wolverine movie in him.

-What new f**kery is this? The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has a post-credits sequence you can only watch on your phone.

Danny Strong will be making his directorial debut with a J.D. Salinger biopic. I’m so proud of our lil’ Jonathan!

-I never really understand how fans are willing to pay over $100 for “photo opps” with stars at conventions, but all the pics with the Being Human cast from last weekend’s Calgary Expo may be changing my mind. I love how they weren’t afraid to get uber-close to the fansor each other.

-Here’s the first trailer of Halle Berry as an astronaut in her CBS summer series.

Courtney Love: Miley Cyrus ‘has a crap stylist,” Katy Perry is ‘damaged goods,’ ‘sad’

Courtney Love

Here’s a photo of Courtney Love at an NYC event for Elton John’s AIDS foundation last week. As you can see, she looks like a perfectly unkempt mess. That’s how she almost always looks. I can literally count on one hand how many times I’ve seen Courtney knock it out of the park, style wise. Of course that doesn’t stop her from smack talking other people’s style. It also didn’t stop Saint Laurent from hiring her as one of their new “faces” in a huge “wtf” move.

Courtney is currently promoting her new memoir that is due out early next year. Rolling Stone says Courtney will trash everyone, including ex-lovers Kurt Cobain, Ed Norton, and Billy Corgan, in this book. There will probably be a bunch of made-up stuff about Gavin Rossdale too. I can’t find a link on Amazon for the book yet, but I’m sure it will be a righteous disaster. I wonder if her ghostwriter added a bunch of typos to make the story seem more authentic. Gahh, memories of Courtney on Twitter. At the moment, Courtney has chosen to trash both Miley Cyrus and Katy Perry. Buckle up:

On her own style: “I look at simple chic as what works best for my age, but I also want the prettiest gown, not the most boring, and the sharpest. I love Marchesa for this and I love Calvin Klein classics and [Michael] Kors, and Chanel gowns. The latter mixes my love of Edwardian and Victorian and flapper with chic. I’m not Daphne Guinness and I don’t have much to prove in rock and roll=that I have down pat. But for my newly committed career, acting again, I’m going to have to really pull off a chic and great look and never get it wrong with too many youthful details such as the ones that inspire me for my line. I love boho, but there’s an appropriate way to wear it. I like Jason Wu, Altuzarra, Valentino and Westwood, as well as Saint Laurent.”

On her fashion regrets: “Obviously Lycra and Spandex and rubber were all bad ideas, but I’m very open; I always try. It doesn’t mean I’m Kate Moss and always nail it. Kate and I went to a store in Notting Hill and purchased the same exact almost Victorian capelet; I wore mine first and got slammed for it and she wore hers the following week in an identical boho outfit and it was heralded; it’s all about context. Weight plays heavily into it, too, and facial beauty. No one could have worn that Givenchy couture gown that I tried on a few times three years ago except Ciara to the VMAs–a black girl with curves in the right places. On me, it looked like a belly dancer.”

On Miley Cyrus’ style: “She has a crap stylist; at least Katy Perry lives out her insane fantasies and kids love it. I liked Katy when she was in a black shag and the shy girl on Glen Ballard’s arm at events. She was damaged goods by the time she got to Capitol [Records]. She really worked for it: ‘It’ being a career I find so boring it’s sort of sad, but what she wears is cute and in her own universe. Miley provided me with endless laughs at the VMAs. The Harajuku Japansese girl little bear suit was cute.”

[From Fashionista]

This certainly isn’t the first time Courtney has trashed Katy Perry. I agree that Miley’s style is a lost cause in the style department. Oh well — one can always count on Courtney to speak her mind and tell the truth about how she feels, but I seriously doubt she remembers what her “truth” is from day to day. She’s so cray.

Lest we forget that Courtney herself is a sartorial disaster, here’s a sampling of her looks over the past five years. These aren’t even “street clothes.” This is the stuff she wears to fashion shows and red-carpet events.
